3 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2001 Dodge RAM

Failure Date: 11/13/2001

I have a 2001 Dodge sport pickup 4x4 that caught fire. The point of origin was located on top of the fuel tank which caused the fuel tank to rupture and catch fire. This occurred while the vehicle was being driven. No mechanical problems prior to this incident. Fire was confined mainly to the underside of the bed. I have found where this identical thing occurred on the1998 models and a recall 98v182000 for that model truck on fuel line problems was issued. After examining my truck, the dealer says that they have never seen or heard of this before and that they are not trained to determine the cause of this fire. I need someone to investigate this problem. I have not contacted the manufacturer yet but have every intention on doing so.

The fire dept had to put out the fire and the truck was totalled. Plastic gas lines should not be permitted in vehicles. Any rodent or road debris can puncture a gas line causing a dangerous situation.

10 Fuel Delivery problem of the 1996 Dodge RAM

Failure Date: 09/10/1998

The truck smelled of fuel and gradually became difficult to start. Although the smell of diesel fuel is common with these trucks it was gradually covering the underside and the back of the truck with diesel mist. A very difficult inspection determined that the fuel return hose was leaking large amounts of fuel but a split or crack could not be found. When I inquired to the dealer, the mechanic knew right away what it was but suggested that I do the replacement myself since it was not difficult but very time consuming which would be very expensive. . A section of new hose was obtained and the old piece replaced. The original hose had totally come apart and in many places the reinforcing cord was easily visible. After the replacement the truck again started easily and the fuel leakage was eliminated. I believe I have retained the section of hose if needed. In talking with the dealer (oyster point Dodge in newport news, virginia) the problem is not uncommon with these Dodge trucks but since the owners are advised to do the replacement, the dealers are not required to report the problem.
