Dodge Ram 1500 owners have reported 11 problems related to software (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The contact owns a 2013 (na) Dodge Ram 1500. When the contact started the vehicle, the computer dialed 911, the fuel tank light illuminated, and the front headlights flashed off and on. The contact turned off and restarted the vehicle, but the failure recurred. The instrument panel lighting flashed off and on. The computer system turned on automatically. Also, the radio dial switched from fm to am signal. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed that the harness was burnt out and replaced. The dealer also changed the software. The failure recurred a week later but had not been diagnosed again. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 58,000.

The hvac system in the truck failed. Air will not flow through the dash face vents or defrost vents. Brought to dealer for repair. Dealer said that one or two "mode door actuators need to be replaced" they said the dash board needed to be removed and it could cost several thousand dollars. Upon researching the problem I found there was a recall issued for the mode door actuators and to reprogram the control head software (k17). My truck had the software update in 2012. The dealer refused to replace the mode door actuators under recall because they said the software update was performed. I called Chrysler customer service and asked about the k17 recall. They said they will not cover the repair because I refused further diagnostics. The only other diagnostics the dealer said needed to be done was to remove the dashboard to see if it was one or two bad actuators and the cost in labor to remove the dash would be several thousand dollars. They know what the problem is they just dont know how many actuators are defective. The cost of the parts is minimal but the labor is not. I feel that Dodge/Chrysler should make good on the recall repair as it is a hazard not being able to clear frost from the windshield due to the defective parts.

On 3/30/15 my ram truck exhibited the condition described in the k17 (reprogram hvac control head and inspect/replace actuators) recall. This recall was created to eliminate the possible malfunction of the hvac system to properly defrost/defog the windshield. It involves updating software and replacing mode door actuators. The plastic actuator gears can easily be broken when the control head sends the wrong signals to open and close the mode doors. At the moment, my defroster/heater is not working and when I first start the vehicle, there is a series of knocking sounds for several minutes as the malfunctioning system goes through its progressions. I took it in to my local Dodge dealer (gurnee) hoping that the recall would eliminate the condition. The mechanic replaced the actuators but could not get the system working properly. He said the control head is not working properly but the recall only covers the software update and not the replacement. From my research I have noticed that other ram owners have encountered this potentially dangerous condition. If it was just a matter of the control head wearing out and not working, I would be okay with replacing it at my own expense. In my opinion though, it is not a case of ¿¿wear and tear¿ but instead I believe it is a defective component. The faulty control head causes the breakage of the actuators and mode doors. People who encounter this problem in the winter are at risk of an accident due to the inability to clear their windshield. Drivers may even need to get their vehicles towed. I believe that Dodge should be responsible for repairing the system to its normal capabilities. That is what a recall is designed to do. This is simply a case of a previously recalled vehicle remedy not working as designed. I called Dodge customer support on 4/10 and talked to a rep that said the repairs would be my responsibility.
The 2014 Ram 1500 sport I bought has had repeated dash and interior lighting problems. The dash lights randomly flicker or don't turn on at all. On some occasions no interior lights at all would work. The truck has been back to the dealership three times but still hasn't been repaired. The dealership has done software updates, re-grounded the electrical system and replaced the body control module without fixing the problem. In addition the remote start sometimes does not start the truck it locks the doors instead, the dealership has been unable to find a solution. I feel that the dial used to select the drive gear is a potential safety hazard. The dial is a similar size and shape as the comfort and radio controls and placed right next to other dash knobs. I believe that a driver could intend to change the radio station or turn the fan down but inadvertently take the truck out of gear. Overall this truck has serious electrical flaws and the possibility of being knocked out of gear while driving. The vehicle is not safe in my opinion.

Center dash cluster reboots while driving. Vehicle keeps running while cluster recycles. It has occurred dozens of times since I purchased the vehicle. It occurs at multiple speeds and sometimes when I am sitting at a stop light. I have been reporting this problem to the dealer service departments since it first occurred. No one seems to have a clue as to the root cause. Multiple software updates have not fixed the problem.
At about 18000 miles on vehicle it suddenly stalled. Throttle body control light came on, rpm dropped to almost zero. Pumping gas pedal had no effect. Condition lasted about 15 to 25 seconds. Took truck to dealer and was informed it needed a throttle body software update. This was done. Also was performed again later. The stalling is intermittent some times not happening for weeks then again it will happen up to 3 times in a week. Bit once stalled on my lady as she was crossing an intersection . Vehicle now has 77000 miles on odometer . I thought this just a hassle until about three weeks ago. As I was merging on to the interstate at about 65 mph in front of a big truck the vehicle stalled for a long period. The big rig was within a very few feet of my vehicle before engine started running again. Needless to say this scared me big time. This was when I started to look for someone to be in my corner on this vehicle has been serviced by Dodge dealership regularly since new. Each time I have reported stalls and at one time had a case opened with Chrysler. I am told they find nothing and they only have my word this is happening. This from dealer and Chrysler.

Instrument cluster failure while driving. Instrument cluster shuts down while driving and instrument cluster fails while driving. Instrument cluster so far has rebooted and returned to working condition but so far cluster has failed around 20+ times while driving. Unknown if instrument cluster will resume functioning after failure until it does restart. Secondary condition to entertainment cluster multiple failure. Entertainment console cluster replaced due to multiple failure of touch screen system. This failed to resolve the instrument cluster problem despite dealership assurances that it would. Instrument cluster being replaced now on truck. Truck 10 months old - multiple entertainment console failures & instrument cluster failures. Dealer unable to diagnose problem with instrument cluster making vehicle unsafe to drive due to possible instrument cluster failure. Unknown if this is a hardware problem, software problem or electrical problem. Numerous trips to dealership and speaking with ram customer service has failed to resolve issue.
First incident-9/27/09. While driving down the street, engine died out and would not restart. Was out of town and had to tow to local dealer. Service department did code check and could not find anything wrong. They did reprogram the pcm software per TSB 18-038-08.
Vehicle code p2175, throttle actuator control (low air flow detected). Have taken to dealer and they don't have a clue what it is. They have many options but none have fixed it so far. The internet has many people with the same issue, and dealer can not fix their problem either.

The contact owns a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500. While driving 45mph the throttle stuck and the pedal extended to the floor. He was able put the vehicle in neutral; however, after starting the vehicle it accelerated without warning. The vehicle was towed and the dealer stated that the failure was due to a cracked battery. They also stated that there was a software problem with downloading the computer diagnosis to the vehicle. The insurance company stated that the vehicle shut off on 2 occasions when they attempted to start it. The insurance investigator stated that the failure was caused by acid leaking from the battery. They stated that the alternator could have caused the crack in the battery. The vehicle has been at the dealer for 2 months. They stated that the failure was electrical; however, the would need to remove as many components as possible to determine the failure. The cost for the repair was approximately $6,000. The dealer was unable to determine how long it would take to make the repair. The dealer stated that the repair was not covered under the warranty. The manufacturer stated that there was nothing they could do. The maintenance on the vehicle was up to date prior to the failure. The dealer replaced the throttle module, pcm unit, the electrical harness, the battery and the battery tray were replaced; however, the failure worseend. The current mileage was 53,235 and the failure mileage was 53,229.
