1 Steering Gear Box problem of the 1997 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 07/18/2005

I purchased this truck in a damaged condition after replacing parts that were necessary on front suspinion including track bar which was worn badly for a truck with only 65000 miles truck was taken in for an alignment even after this truck has tendency to wander on road I beleave this is caused by incorrect preload on steering sector which can be adjusted upon researching this on internet I find this tends to be a common problem on these trucks I called Chrysler to see if they would do any kind of policy adjustment on box they said no I feel that this is a safety issue and not a wear problem and sense truck was wreaked by previous owner I wonder if this might have been a contributing factor as the looseness in steering box is not connected to accident and with number of people complaining cannot be coinsidential.

6 Steering Gear Box problem of the 1999 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 01/01/2003

This has been an ongoing situation since about 35000 miles. Under extended warranty the dealer replaced all most all of the front end parts on my 99 Ram 1500 4wd. Most recently this truck failed the new your state inspection for wobble in the steering box output shaft. This steering box was replaced by the dealer about 9600 miles before. The truck had a lot of play in the steering and the wheel was at about 1:30 instead of 12:00. Three mechanics and myself saw the play. This garage told me to take it back to the dealer as it would be under warranty. I did this and had to leave the truck for them to check. I was told by the service manager that there was no play and no repairs were needed. The truck wheel was now at12: 00 and it was hard to steer with no return to center. I talked to the service manager and he said that there were no adjustments to the steering box and that the only adjustment to the allignment was toe in so he said that my truck had derveloped memory steering and that the steering was really tight and that I should not complain. Not satisfied as I had seen the play myself I replaced the steering box and lo and behold the steering was like new. Easy returns to center and the steering wheel is centered. What I found out about the deffective steering box was that the over center adjustment was 1 turn too tight and that the worm shaft preload was too tight and the pitman arm seals were replaced with new seals and they used chassis lube which was new and clean. All this while saying that there were no repairs needed or done. The pitman shaft bearing was worn between . 045 and. 057 the new seals took up the play. My question would be if nemer Dodge service does this kind of repair and says that they did nothing to keep from having to pay for warranty work what else are they doing. It should be noted that my son ,an inexperienced driver as he is just now getting his liscence, could not keep this truck on the road. He needed to use two lanes to drive.

We started to have problems with the van since it was purchased, we went back to the dealer rigth after we noticed a few problems with the van, such as car pulling to the rigth and a loud thump sound coming from the rigth rear side every time we pass those speed bumps. And when they inspected the van they (the dealer technicians), told me that a shock absorver needed to be replace and alignment was needed as well. After this two things were done, everything went down the hill. . . . When I drove home the van I noticed that van was pulling still to the rigth and a noise was coming from the left front suspension when braking, is more like a cracking noise, I'll mention that this was't happening all the time, but the pulling to the rigth was. We went back with them, they aligned again. . . But, this time the van was not pulling to the rigth but to the left instead, this happend when driving straigth or when braking as well, we went back to the same dealer, but after some attempsof fixing this problem and a very unpleasent experiences with their (customer representaives) at desplaines Dodge dealer, not to try again wih them, we contacted Chrysler representatives, and told them about the very dumb comment the customer representative of desplaines Dodge dealer, that they suggested to take the van to a 5 stars shop the comment the customer representative made was (that the van was pulling to the rigth because it was a safety feature build in the van to prevent people wander to the to the left in case the fell sleep, this was a very dumb thing to said. So finally we went to that 5 stars dealer, and a (big) inprovement was achieve, the van was pulling less but on this occasion instead of pulling to rigth it started to pull to the left and the steering wheel was not straight, it was croocked to the left and before was to the right. I noticed more play on the steering wheel. I'll mention that ever since we have this van in our possession the steering wheel never th.
