Dodge Ram 2500 owners have reported 8 problems related to automatic transmission torque converter (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
There was no accident thankfully. I took my truck to a dealership because it was shifting hard. I took it in twice and both times the dealerships wouldn't even look at it. They pluged it in to their computers and told me it needed an update. Finally one day I raised cane about it and they kept it and found that the torque converter was bad. They replaced it and the pump in the transmission. That took two weeks. I drove it 5 days after that and the truck got stuck in first gear and then natural and would not move. I took it back and they replaced the pump again. They test drove it and it threw a bearing in the transmission. Now they have had it for a month and it is still not fixed and they refuse to put a new transmission in it. I only have 27000 mile on it now. It is a new 70,000$ truck with a half way rebuilt transmission. And I still do not have my truck.

There appears to be two possibly related issues with regard to the powertrain. The first issue is some sort of backlash in the drive train when accelerating to 30-35 mph and then letting off the gas. The system seems to shift gears before the torque converter unlocks. The second issue is that when accelerating from a stop there is a significant lag in response between the engine and the pedal both in accelerating and decelerating. This can cause an issue when pulling out into traffic. Both of these relate to the bcm and the electronic throttle control. Multiple visits to the dealership have not solved this issue.

The contact owns a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500. While idling at a stop light the rpms increase as if the vehicle would accelerate. He has to grip the steering wheel tightly to prevent vehicle movement. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection. He was advised that the torque converter in the transmission would fail. He has to pay to replace the transmission. The failure mileage was 114,000.

The contact owns a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500. While parked on an incline, the contact started the vehicle and placed his foot on the accelerator pedal. The vehicle then drifted backwards. He took his vehicle to the local dealer and they stated that this was a normal characteristic for the transmission torque converter to drain backwards. In order to reverse this failure, the vehicle must be placed in neutral for 2- 3 minutes before shifting into reverse. The contact stated there were no warnings or direction in traction. The current and failure mileages were 14,250. Updated 12/12/07.

Having transmission problems with a 1998 Dodge Ram 2500. Transmission overheats and "transtemp" light comes on after overdrive shuts of while doing highway driving. Truck has high miles but I believe the problem is attributed to a poorly designed torque converter malfunctioning and is not directly related to the age, miles or normal wear and tear of the vehicle. I have learned it is common to have the transmission rebuilt or repaired one or more times during the duration of the trucks life. If what I have learned is true then this is unacceptable business practice from Dodge and the consumer should not have to pay for a defect in manufacturing.
Transmission slips. Dealer contacted, put on computer and stated there was nothing wrong. Driving down a hill represents a big problem when pulling a trailer. It will not hold back. Consumer has to rely on brakes in order to come off of a hill. Dealer cannot duplicate the problem. Torque converter unlocks at any speed when decelerating, vehicle will not hold back even when in first gear, when towing a trailer and traveling downhill, the brakes have to be used, dealer states this is the way they are built.
