Dodge Ram 2500 owners have reported 18 problems related to steering column (under the steering category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I had taken my truck into the dealer while still under warranty to fix a steering shake/wobble. The dealer inspected it and informed me of a defective bearing in the steering column. I was informed that the part was no longer available even though my truck was still under warranty and I would notbe able to have the part repaired or replaced. They even tried to look for a used part from a salvage yard. I was told there was nothing they could do and was given an option to have my extended warranty for another year longer for free in exchange. I am still driving my truck with the defective bearing and shaky steering column. It was never repaired while under warranty due to no parts available. I was told it was due to the money trouble Chrysler was having and the venders were not getting paid and parts were not being manufactured. This was all done at cerritos Dodge in California.

I was on the highway doing around 75 and hit a small bump and all 4 tires locked up, the steering wheel and column shook violently, the dashboard and everything shook really hard. I started to hit the brakes and did not let go of the steering wheel even if it was shaking hard. My truck started to go onto the shoulder then went into the grass on the right and came to a stop. It was still running and I got out to look at the tires and underneath but nothing was wrong. I took it to a different dealer and told them I experienced this before and not to try to duplicate the complaint because it will go out of control. Today they called me to say they replaced the ball joint (under warranty) but I have to pay for an alignment. I told them that I looked the symptoms up on the internet and saw this is a real problem that cant be fixed and I don't want this to happen to me again, they can keep it. Why do I have to pay 700. 00/month payments and also pay with my life or someone else's life too? I will not pick this 'fixed' truck up from the dealer. On the internet and you-tube its called, the death wobble and is what happened to me, only worse and twice! so, today I went to NHTSA and filed both complaints. Believe me, I may not have it on video but its very violent and you cant steer! the steering shakes so bad that you can barely hang onto it and I think all the tires quit turning because you literally are bouncing down the highway.

Event:
pullled up in front of barn to get a load of hay. Moved gear selector lever to reverse to back up to building, but when accelerator was pressed, vehicle moved forward. Failure:
internal parts in steering column had become disconnected from each other, the result being that movement of the gear selector lever did not affect the lever at the end of the steering column that is connected to the transmission control rod. The only way that the vehicle could be placed in park, started, or put into a gear position was to raise the hood and move the transmission control rod by hand. Solution:
since the steering column is a welded assembly and is not servicable, it was replaced. The old assembly is available for inspection. The assembly part number is p55351175
related complaint:
similar to complaint odi id 892310 which was entered as a problem with component : powertrain: automatic transmission: p/n start switch. My problem would have manifested itself in the same way if I had placed the shift lever into park position and had gotten out of the vehicle without setting the brake.

After turning a corner on a black top road, the steering went completely out and the wheel would spin 360 with no control. Luckily there were no other vehicles involved. I was able to get the vehicle off the road and partially into the ditch. It was determined that a bolt was either missing or fell out of the steering column.

The contact owns a 2008 Dodge Ram 2500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 5 mph, the steering wheel seized and became stiff, making it difficult to steer and maneuver the vehicle. In addition, the contact noticed a clunking noise and a vibration in the steering column. After pulling the steering wheel and depressing the brake pedal, the steering began to function as normal. The failure occurred intermittently while driving at various speeds. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostics, where the mechanic stated that the outer ball joints were wearing abnormally and the steering shaft and linkages were loose. The dealer was made aware of the failure, but stated that the part was on a national back order and not available. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 38,000.

Steering column has clicking noise. Dodge said it needs to be replaced. The truck only has 47k miles. (already had to replace computer because truck would shut off while going down the highway). I'm concerned I will just lose steering. This truck has been nothing but trouble.
The steering column on this truck has gotten very hot under the ignition switch area. So hot in fact that the wires and plastic column cover have smoked and melted through. I feel there may be a fire soon. The dealership says nothing is wrong with my model year but the melted hole in my steering column says otherwise I've read there was a recall of this nature but was told in no uncertain terms that they would not be helping me. Help. . .

The contact owns a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500. The contact stated that his vehicle would not start and the fans for the air conditioner were not working. After he adjusted the steering column, the air conditioner worked. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic and they were unable to duplicate the failure. The failure remained and the contact had the vehicle towed to a local dealer. The dealer stated that the wiring circuits were burned, but they could not determine when the fire occurred. They refused to repair the vehicle for free because it exceeded the warranty. A complaint was filed with the manufacturer. The failure mileage was 69,000 and current mileage was 71,000. The consumer stated cuevas informed him the air/heat controls did not work in all positions. Updated 12/13/07.

Excessive movement in poor quality oem ball joints, along with road feed back through a multi piece, and movable steering shaft and steering column. Make this series of truck unsafe, a hazard, and a liability on the road.

Cracked dashboard leading to defective wiring and steering column problems.
The steering column was no longer operative.
I have recently exerienced what I would describe as a "wandering front end" on my '98 ram. I had a local dealer look at the problem. They spent 0. 60 hrs diagnosing a "slightly worn lower column shaft". They were quick to point out that this may not fix the problem and that perhaps I should continue driving the vehicle in hope that the symptoms would become more evident. I declined any repair. I later went "on-line" and was surprised to find a technical service bulletin on the subject. (TSB 19-10-97 - "steering wander") in addition, I found an entire web site dedicated to this phenomena. (key search, Dodge ram) the stories are very similar to what I am experiencing and some are much worse - scary! I e-mailed daimler Chrysler and asked if they were considering any sort of corrective action. Their answer was no. Ts.
Vehicle idles and does not accelerate when the gas pedal is stepped on. Also, vehicle tends to decelerate often when it is traveling at various speeds on the road. Taken to the dealer for a total of 10 times, but the cause was still undetermined. The vehicle never ran right after the wiring on the steering was replaced. Cruise control or gas pedal does not work. Truck caught fire in the steering column. The vehicle engine shut off by itself and started back up by itself twice.
