While having other recalls fixed it was discovered that the steering box was leaking and making noise while turning. The repair shop stated that there was no recall and that there were no repair parts available. The steering could fail anytime. Chrysler /Dodge should be fixing this issue as I have found that it is a problem that they know about. Vehicle has 80,000. Miles on it.

2000 miles ago as I was driving down the freeway the truck began to pull to the right and handled as if there was some broken linkage or steering box was failing. After inspecting and not finding anything wrong, I continued my trek home and couldn't comfortably go above 30 mph, it almost felt like half of the front axle was locked in 4wd. Searched online and saw that seized rear brake calipers are not uncommon so I replaced the rotors, calipers, and pads. Made several short trips and thought it was resolved. During a 1 hour drive the problem returned and I was unable to control vehicle and stopped to inspect. The brakes were not hot but the rear axle was binding badly, I limped the truck home, afraid to drive it again. As I have been doing research on the problem, the internet forums revealed many peoples stories about Dodge ram axles "locking/seizing" while driving down the freeway causing accidents and roll-overs. Just thought you might want to look into it. Thanks, signed an immaculately cared for and broken Dodge ram :(.

The steering assembly has gone out twice on my truck, once at about 85,000 and once at 158000 miles. The first time the steering locked turning in both directions, the second time only turn to the left. Preceding these occurrences, while driving highway speeds and going over a bump the truck starts shaking violently (death shake), and to control the truck I had to break sharply. The third steering assembly that was just installed at a local Dodge dealership, within a couple of miles, the front end starts to shake at various speeds - two different vibration - one like the tires are out of balance, the other is a rapid vibration that you feel thru the steering column. This is very similar to the month preceding the steering failure. I had the balance of the tires checked, they were fine, but the vibration problems still exist. I looks like all three steering assemblies are bad - I have checked with a reputable mechanic, and they stated that the factory steering assemblies are no good for this truck. The Dodge dealership has provided no help or resolutions, and I have even requested that they contact the factory for resolutions, but have declined to help. The last conversation they said it was a balancing issue - this was found out not to be true.
I am seeing a lot of the same complaints with this recall. I am getting the same story that they are waiting on parts and cannot perform this recall now. The dealer does not know when parts are to come in. My concern is, its already been way more than a few months since I went into the dealer and had them verify my truck needed the recall. I don't drive my truck on a daily basis but when I am using it I am usually hauling my dump trailer. I don't want to be the cause of me or someone else getting injured when I know there is an issue with the truck like the steering may fail. I don't understand how there cannot be any parts to replace this yet.

No incident, just a question of concern. We have received several notices of a recall for our 2010 3/4 ton truck, but the dealerships (2! both glenwood springs and grand junction) state they cannot get the parts and have on us a waiting list. What the heck??!! it has been 7 months! if a recall about the steering is in place, why is there no preparation and way to resolve this? and we have had to have our steering worked on before, but not correcting this recall. So, now what happens if the steering fails and I am still on the list? who is responsible? I tried to do the right thing but apparently the shortage of parts is creating another hazard. I certainly don't want to be cruising down I-70 at 75 mph and the steering fails! one of the dealerships stated they get 2 repair kits a month and this may take 1-2 years to get thru the waiting list for the repair. This cannot be right!.

The contact owns a 2009 Dodge Ram 2500. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign numbers: 13v529000 (steering) and 15v313000 (air bags); however, the parts to do the repairs were unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. In addition, the contact stated that the front steering linkage failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. No further details on the failure were available. The failure mileage was unknown.
Car was brought in 5 times to have various front end recalls performed , two different dealers bedard brothers in cheshire mass. And beterra for stering recall (now n49/NHTSA 13v-529) previously same recall had two or three different numbers. They have never had the parts and could never perform the recall. Because they say that the steering may fail at any moment I have used the vehicle only when I absoluely have no other transoportation. Hence as of today the car has 17,200 miles only. The other problem is loss of coolant , the egr cooler has been leaking , I have had it at dealers three times and they have no clue how to repair . This is a common coplaint. Because this internal leak goes into the turbocharger. The turbocharger failed and on 7/08/13 had to be replaced at 16,150 miles . That was the symptom of the egr cooler leak, but the cause (leaking egr cooler was not addressed then or on two following trips to the dealers. On to bedard and one to berterra. The Chrysler case number may be 24954056 after dealers worked on car two trouble codes appeared p052 and p0700 I don't want to continue driving a car that the steering will fail at any moment or the engine may blow because of coolant loss.

I own a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup truck. Four wheel drive with a diesel engine. Vehicle has 30,000 miles. On 2 December 2005, while driving to work with out any warning the steering locked, rendering me helpless unable to steer the vehicle. After I was able to get the vehicle to a safe location I attempted to test the steering. The steering wheel would not steer to the right of center. It will steer to the left but seems to have a diminished power assist performance at first. While cycling the steering system several times the power assist to the left improves. However once the steering reaches the center point to the right the steering locks and would not go any further right of center. The vehicle is currently at dominion Dodge service rep 1259 e. Main street salem virginia, and they have determined that the steering gear box has failed. Although it is very possible that a component of this type could fail, in the 30 years as an automotive mechanic and a master in hydraulic systems technology I have yet seen or heard of a steering gear box failure that would render a vehicle completely incapable of controlling steering. Most of my experience in this field is usually worn component that cause poor performance in the steering capability. Usually this occurs at greater than 100,000 miles, not at 30,0000.

The contact owns a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500. While driving approximately 75 mph on normal road conditions; there was a sudden loss of steering control. Immediately, the driver stopped the vehicle and towed it to an authorized dealer. There were no prior warnings. The failure was contributed to the steering system. The contact was responsible for the repair cost of $1,933. 75. The contact stated that there were safety recalls for model years 2003 to 2009 on the identical model. There was concern of the safety risk involved. The failure mileage was 192,175 and the current mileage was 300,000. Updated 03/30/10 the consumer stated the steering failed as she was driving. The gear box, steering box and ball joints were replaced. Updated 08/18/10 updated 08/23/jb.
While driving at 15 mph, the intermediate steering shaft fell apart, the driver loss control of the vehicle. The cause of the steering shaft failure was due to the pinch bolt falling out. The consumer making a right turn towing a small trailer when the steering shaft separated and the vehicle veered into the ditch.
Although steering did not fail. It is horrible to keep control of vehicle. The steering has a constant binding you must overcome when turning in either direction. You end up over compensating and are in a constant zig-zag especially at highway speeds. This has been a problem with Ram 2500's so my dealer tells me. Chrysler says it is normal characteristic of this vehicle. I have never driven anything that steers as bad as this in my whole life.
