The contact owns a 2007 Dodge Ram 2500. The contact stated that the automatic transmission decelerated as he downshifted between fifth and four gear. While driving 42 mph, the transmission appeared to disengage when shifted into neutral and the vehicle coasted when he released the brake pedal. He stated that the transmission automatically re-engaged at 30 mph. When manually shifting from first to fifth gear, the transmission operates normally, however, it fails to function automatically. He took the vehicle to the dealer for it to be test driven. The dealer acknowledged the failure and advised him to call NHTSA. The current and failure mileages were 3,855. Updated 12-12-07. Truck has 52000 miles, 5. 9l gas engine, 4 speed auto tranny, and has been babied, never been off-road or pulled a trailer. On 8/17/2007 I made a couple of short trips and when got home I went to back into driveway and reverse gear did not engage. It worked fine earlier that day, then nothing. Put my obd-ii scanner on it and no code, checked linkage and it is in proper working order.

The contact owns a 1997 Dodge Ram 2500. While driving 60 mph, the transmission shifted into neutral on its own and nearly caused numerous crashes. The contact took the vehicle to a mechanic and was informed that a nut on the fifth gear was disengaged and caused the failure. Dodge stated that there was a remedy for the failure, but there was no recall. The current mileage was 57,400 and failure mileage was 57,000. Updated 01/02/08. Updated 12/12/07.

2006 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup has a so called "safety" feature where is the transmission is not fully engaged in park when the door is open the horn starts honking non-stop until either the door is closed of the transmission is fully engaged in park. This fix is completely unacceptable to people who pull trailers and need to open the door while in reverse to see where they are going. To me Dodge has only masked the problem by not fixing the transmission shift mechanism. I would think there should be a recall to install a proper transmission shift mechanism and remove the horn honk feature. The vehicle could still roll backwards just with the horn blowing! need to fix the mechanical aspect if you ask me.
Purchased Dodge Ram 2500 2004 4wd hemi brand new 2 weeks ago, 7/30/04. Put the truck in 4wd and drove for 1 mile. Took the truck out of 4wd, went to 2wd and the transmission would not engage. Left me stranded for 2 1/2 hours waiting for a tow truck when I was supposed to be on vacation. No rental car available because they would not give us one - new truck, under warranty, first time in 4wd. We were 3 hours from home in outer banks and closest dealer would not work on truck because he stated, "you should have bought your truck from me". We did not buy a truck from him because he only had a long bed. Had to argue with Chrysler 24 hour road side assistance to make them two the truck back to dealer in virginia beach and they finally consented to pay for the whole trip. Truck went back home without us. We were extremely lucky to break down at a gas station.

While driving my Dodge Ram 2500 pickup towing my horse trailer at highway speed, the overdrive 5th gear on the manual transmission disengaged and would not re-engage. I was lucky that this incident occurred when I was not in heavy traffic and could maneuver safely out of traffic to assess the situation. All other gears would engage and I had to complete my trip is 4th gear. After an inspection of transmission was completed, it was determined that the nut that holds the 5th gear in place on the transmission out-put shaft had backed off, causing 5th gear to slide rearward and disengage. Dodge has circulated a service bulletin concerning this problem (21-10-98a) and has developed a repair kit to fix the problem. Dodge failed to notify me of this potential problem. After reseaching complaints filed with NHTSA on this situation, I quickly found 10 complaints that relate to this problem. Also after talking with local transmission mechanics, I found that several similar repairs have been done locally on Dodge pickup 5-speed transmissions. This is a major safety issue and all owners of Dodges with this transmission should be made aware of the problem.
