: the contact stated the check engine light illuminated and the vehicle stalled without warning, but restarted immediately. The dealership replaced the catalytic converter. The check engine light illuminated and the vehicle stalled 50000 miles later, but would not restart. The vehicle was towed to an independent repair shop, who determined the catalytic converter needed to be replaced.

Check engine light illuminated 9/04 and I took my 98 Ford Contour to my mechanic who diagnosed it as needing a new catalytic converter. I took it to Ford in 3/05 (because my mechanic said it could wait awhile) and they diagnosed a different code and replaced the manifold. After paying $600. 00 to Ford, the light came on again after 45 miles. Took the car to autozone and they diagnosed a catalytic code. I had told Ford that was the problem before I brought it in and now they want me to re-diagnosed with them out of pocket.

This car is only 6 years old. Has had catalytic converter failure in 2000. Extended warranty expired at 87,750 miles, 1,250 miles ago. Contacted Ford motor CO. And was told they would not stand behind this defect. I was hoping you could help.
My 1996 Ford Contour's (w/v6 2. 5l duratec motor) engine check light came on around Jan 2 of 2001. I scheduled an appointment to have it checked out at the closest Ford dealership in modesto, CA. As soon as possible. The next available appointment was on Friday Jan 05, 2001, later on that week. Once I took it in, they had diagnosed the problem as being my (3) catalytic converters and my throttle body. The service advisor then told me that he had to check with Ford because he believed that the work was covered under a Ford recall 97e61. The next day he responded to me and told me that Ford had said that it wasn't covered and that my bill would be $1,300. 00. I then asked him why it wasn't covered and he told me because my VIN# doesn't show it. He then asked me to take it up with Ford the actuall company. So I've been doing research on it myself and have come up with a little bit of info. Ford's customer service has told me that the reason my car is not covered is because it doesn't fall under the 97e61 criteria for recall. So I asked what actuall part does not fall undeer the criteria. They asked me to take it up with NHTSA and they can give me that info. What I have found is that cars that were built at 2 Ford plants, cautlin, and kansas city plants are the ones that are affected. Well my car was built at the kansas city plant. The other criteria I know about is if the car was built within March of 95 thru March of 96. Well my car was first sold in Feb. 96 and it's a 96 model so it would have to fall within that time frame. I am currently having my car fixed at a different Ford dealership but my cost is still over $1,100. 00. Plesae help me. Cesar garcia call me any time at 408-674-9315 to let me know you have received my letter. I would also like a copy e-mailed to me of what I have written so I have a record at cgarcia1974@aol. Com.
I believe all 1997 Ford Contours should be recalled, over the past 3 years I have replaced the clutch, waterpump, blower motor, both lower control arms, bushings, sway bars, wheel bearings, front & rear brakes and rotors(both twice!!!!), axle, 2 oxygen sensors, catalytic converter, egr valve, coil springs, battery, balljoints, door latch, almost all of the full front suspension!!!! there are more parts that I had replaced but I can't remember all the names of the parts there are too many!! my check engine light will not turn off, seat belt light will not turn off, short in the drivers side power window, the engine will (rev) up by itself when it's in gear and when it's not, short in the drivers side power seats, water leakage in the trunk, a/c leaks onto the passenger side floor, all doors squeak no matter what you do, carpet is falling out, horn will not work most of the time, same for the cruise control, windshield wiper sprayer does not work, knocking noise coming from the engine, ended up in very bad debt because of this and no one will take it, I still owe money on the piece of crap. Contacted Ford motor at one time regarding all the parts I replaced after the first year I had it, they say it's not there problem. Dealership who sold it to me says it was just fine, bull crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I believe that those are too many items for a 1997 to go wrong on.

My understanding is there is supposedly 4 catalytic converters on the 1998 Contour.
There is a fuel smell inside of vehicle. Dealer replaced catalytic converter sensor 4 times, and once coolant sensor. But, it did not remedy problem.
Coating inside catalytic converter will come off, causing failure of catalytic converter, oxygen sensor also causes severe stalling.
While vehicle is idling and moving, engine vibrates, then cuts off in traffic; nearly caused accident; possibly, defective catalytic converter.
The check engine light in the consumer's vehicle continued to illuminate. The mechanic determined that the catalytic converter needed to be changed. To date the catalytic converter has been changed 3 times.
