Nhtsa website confirms 79 similar complaints of Ford's known manufacture defects in dashboard assembly is a safety hazard that compromises the occupant/pedestrian saftey: warped dash panel and sprung out front defrost grill obstructs driver's view; loose grill strikes windshield while car in motion and could break it; deflects proper airbag deployment; proper airflow of defrost is deflected; Ford knowingly manufactures and sells defective vehicles. Then immediately issues a "customer satisfaction program" notice (in this case cps # 01b78) that has an expiration date designed to preempt manifestation of the defects by the customer. On my 1999 Ford Contour se, the defroster grill has sprung out and juts out of alignment so that the airflow from defrost mechanism is obstructed. Dashboard warped and separated from windshield on the driver's side with the fissure spreading toward the passenger side. Ford customer service declined to do repairs/replacement at no charge, stating Ford is no longer liable because the customer service program expired August 2002. Instead, the Ford dealer service department offered me the loyal customer service deal of making the repair for cost of only $1638. 12. I purchased the vehicle new in February 1999 for $18077. 16 (financed price of $24318. 40)!!! my car loan has been paid in full February 2004 with no late payments. My vehicle's routine maintenance was done by the Ford dealer's service department. I am a second time Ford owner; my previous vehicle was a 1992 Ford tempo. However, lord willing, the 1999 Contour will be my last. These are just some of the additional expenses I incurred seldom used a/c repair $275 faulty engine light 02 sensors replace $500 dealer cut brake roters too low $800.

I bought it on 07/01/04. On 07/02/04 my on was driving it, and couple of times, whem he stopped on stop signed, the car wouldn't start. Eventually, in the evening, there was white thick smoke coming from under the hood and car was stopped. I called the dealership and they towed it to the mechanic shop. It happened that there was no oil and coolant and endine has gone bad. The dealer refused to pay completely for the repair, and we split it 20/80% where I'm to pay 80%. It's been 2 weeks and car is still in shop. I didn't buy it to sit in shop. Is there a way to correct the situation somehow?.

Ford motor corp is aware of a defective valve in it's Ford Contours with 6 cyl 2. 5l engines that causes an oil out and over-pressurized condition. My vehicle experienced this and my mechanic contacted a Ford service manager and was told that they are having a silent recall, and each case will be handled on a case by case basis. When I took the car to Ford and after keeping it for a week they determined that they would not rectify the problem because I had not received my oil change from them. I had previously taken my vehicle to Ford and spent so much money for all problems and I have well documented service records on my vehicle. I also have a college son that I purchased the same vehicle for and am afraid that his will experience the same problem while he is out on the highway. I have had to replace the engine because of this. The vehicle only has 38,000 miles and has always been well maintained. I think that this is a safety hazard to many consumers and that Ford should step up and service this problem for it's loyal customers and for the safety of so many individuals.
Vehicle's engine blew up. Vehicle was 14 miles out of warranty, however the vehicle was purchased with 28 miles on it.

Since the beginning of July, 2001 this car has experienced the same problem and has been in for dealer service 4 times for that problem. Dealer stated the problem was first the camshaft sensor switch (which was replaced twice, I was told), then stated that the actual problem was the cam shaft itself. That was replaced the fourth time the vehicle was taken in for service. I was told the dealer contacted the manufacturer and a manufacturer's rep consulted on the fourth repair, which took 6 weeks to complete. The problem has not been corrected and occurs at various speeds/unpredictable times. It has happened often when turning into an intersection, but also when traveling at 60+ mph on busy freeways. I consider this a serious problem likely to result in injury if not fixed. I don't believe the dealer can fix the problem since they have attempted to four times without success. Dealer has only charged for diagnostic test and has paid for rental car during two times when they had the car in for service. Regardless, this is a safety issue that I feel Ford motor company must address. After checking your database of consumer complaints, I found many entries that described the same type of problem. The Contour is no longer being manufactured by Ford, which to me indicates that they know this vehicle has serious engineering flaws.
Engine mount bracket bolt broke. Causing the engine to move.
This engine situation was intractable because the Ford bulletin advises that head gasket removal warrants replacement, therefore even Ford technicians have to ?!@#$% foot around to see if the problem is elsewhere rather than going right to the source. I borrowed $10,000 to finish school this year and much of that money was spent on this car. It destroyed my academic year and I barely graduated thanks to this major headache. The was only at 49,000 miles when it finally went caput. When the engine was disassembled it was totally warped and blown. I bought a Ford rebuilt engine because I couldn't afford the extra $700 for a jasper rebuilt engine. . . See they rebuild the same engine and make a 7 year 100,000 warranty on the rebuilt engine because they use a graphite head gasket and make other improvements that Ford doesn't make. Ford not only sells their weaker rebuilt engines but only put a 1 year 12,000 mile warranty on it. Well, I'm broke and it's totally Ford's fault.
While under warranty the engine light came on. Had it replaced. While under warranty had the rear main seal replaced. Just three weeks after that repair the oil light came on. I checked the oil level and found that it was at the proper level. I took it to the dealer who said I needed a new engine. Now I have appealed to Ford moter CO. To replace the engine at their cost. It seems to me that the failure began under warranty but only manifested itself 3 weeks after the warranty period.
When consumer steered to the left vehicle pulled more than intended. Dealer inspected the vehicle & found nothing wrong. The steering problem is caused by bad front end alignment. The transmission failed. Broken motor mount was found. The heater failed too.
Consumer was traveling about 65mph on expressway and warning light came on, vehicle was smoking. She pulled over to the shoulder, and put some water into vehicle to get home. She only could drive 10mph on the road and vehicle started losing oil. She took it to garage, and mechanic told her that cylinder block was cracked. Consumer contacted Ford.
