Emission Control Problems of Ford Contour

Check engine light comes on three times for different oxygen sensors. These greatly effect the gas mileage and timing of engine resulting in more expensive repairs. The mechanic stated he has seen a lot of Ford Contours in with this specific problem. Cost is minimum $250-$450 to replace.

Consumer request help to fix a 1996 Contour. The consumer took the vehicle to be inspected and it failed. The consumer was told by the dept of motor vehicle that the vehicle had been subject to an emission recall as reported by the epa the dealer informed the consumer that the vehicle was no longer under warranty. The original owner received a recall notice in 1997 but the consumer never received a recall notice.

1999 v6 Contour se. Rh rear spring made by visteon broke from corrosion @ 87k miles. Lh rear spring covered with rust visteon is also maker of front springs that had recall on 95-97my front springs. Poor spring coating design incl. Iron phosphate. Ignition switch failure at 75k miles. Had to be replaced. Top of dashboard was recalled with a kit. Kit did not fix problem -- excessive rattles still exist. I understand that was the intent of recall & Ford has no additional kits or plans to replace faulty recall. Kit was replaced around 60k miles. Faulty dpfe sensor on this duratec engine. Dealer told me replacement sensors had a re-design that did not have exposed area that constantly triggers check engine light. Original sensors get contamination and will trigger the check light continuously. Ford did not recall and only replaced if complaints under warranty. I noticed problem around 60000 miles.

Dealer told me electrical system had a short. O2 sensor & computer in car. The car has had to have the O2 sensor replaced 3 times ($1200. 00 charged by to me by dealer each time) and the computer reset. My complaint is that I should not have to pay to have the electrical fixed and the O2 censor replaced again (4 time!!). . . The turn signals work and than do not . . I have been told a short is in the car but Ford will not find for free. . I am tired of fixing this car please please help.

Vehicles shuts off frequently. Vehicle won't pass emissions test. It won't start, and has to be towed to the dealer.

The wiring harness of my 1996 Ford Contour caught fire. I had prior problems with the vehicle in the past such as tail light going out constantly and also headlights, as well as problems with the O2 sensor. I have put more that$2000 dollars alone on this car just getting it repaired.

Our 98 Contour check engine light comes on and stays on when this happens the car stalls at about 40 mph or less. Took to dealership they ran a diagnostic on vehicle said it was the oxygen sensor . Engine light goes off and vehicle seems to run alright for awhile then engine comes back on and the stalling of the engines starts up again. Sister has the same car it is a 1996 Ford Contour her vehicle does the same thing she took hers in they told her the same thing that it is the oxgen sensor. Also have talked to several other people who have the Contour they have had the same problem. This seems to be a very common occurence with this vehicle. When it stalls you lose all power can be dangerous if turning a corner or curve in road. My car finally stalled again and now it will not start stalled at about 40mph was onexiting highway had no break power or power steering. This could end up being potentially dangerous problem and have complained to Ford motor company they seem to be unresponsive.

A faulty oxygen sensor needed to be replaced. Dealer notified. Feel free to provide any further information.

Check engine light stays on, replaced O2 sensor with light returning on.

Consumer received notification that vehicle was affected by recall 01v230000. Dealership examined vehicle, but performed no repairs in accordance with description of corrective action. Engine light illuminated due to faulty O2 sensor.

Consumer sped up to pass another vehicle, and when slowing down vehicle started to vibrate. Also, vehicle was racing up to 2000 rpm/, stalling, and making a rumbling sound. Dealer stated oxygen sensor had gone bad. It controls amount of air and gas mixture.

Air flow sensors failed.

I believe all 1997 Ford Contours should be recalled, over the past 3 years I have replaced the clutch, waterpump, blower motor, both lower control arms, bushings, sway bars, wheel bearings, front & rear brakes and rotors(both twice!!!!), axle, 2 oxygen sensors, catalytic converter, egr valve, coil springs, battery, balljoints, door latch, almost all of the full front suspension!!!! there are more parts that I had replaced but I can't remember all the names of the parts there are too many!! my check engine light will not turn off, seat belt light will not turn off, short in the drivers side power window, the engine will (rev) up by itself when it's in gear and when it's not, short in the drivers side power seats, water leakage in the trunk, a/c leaks onto the passenger side floor, all doors squeak no matter what you do, carpet is falling out, horn will not work most of the time, same for the cruise control, windshield wiper sprayer does not work, knocking noise coming from the engine, ended up in very bad debt because of this and no one will take it, I still owe money on the piece of crap. Contacted Ford motor at one time regarding all the parts I replaced after the first year I had it, they say it's not there problem. Dealership who sold it to me says it was just fine, bull crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I believe that those are too many items for a 1997 to go wrong on.

My car was in the shop 5 times in one month - all electrical problems. Alternator, battery, starter, wiring harness, speed sensor and oxygen sensor were all changed. The Ford dealership does not understand why I am having all these problems. It was also in a garage fire at the dealership in this time and I had smoke damage to my car on top of the engine problems. Needless to say, I loss money on the trade in. This is the worse car I have ever owned and will never own another Ford car or truck again.

Flexible vent hose is deteriorated and cracked. It leaks gasoline when the tank is filled and when the car is driven. It appears to me , that the wrong type of hose is being used in this assembly. If this is happening so prematurely, it must be happening to alot of other Contour owners.

Valve sticks shut, causing fuel to backup and spill when filling tank. Was replaced, now replacement part also sticking.

After noticing a whining sound at approximately 30 mph in second gear and an increase in vibration when the air conditioner was on, the transmission was rebuilt on 10/10/98, on 8/3/2000 the transmission was replaced because of sudden and violent slipping, on 8/28/00 check engine light came on because oxygen sensor had been disconnected while transmission was replaced, sensor reconnected/replaced. Cj.

Oxygen sensor failed 4 times.
