The contact stated the plastic dashboard delaminated from the foam. The dashboard laminate was pushing upward, thus hindering the contact's vision through the front window. He contacted the manufacturer, and they said it was under review, and that it was cosmetic. Also, he is also experienced fuel pump and water pump problems. Under hard acceleration the fuel pump shut off. The dealership stated the contact's vehicle needed a new fuel pump. The bearings on the water pump failed and the vehicle overheated. .

Driving on intersate 66 from manassas va into washington DC at 65mph when noticed cold air blowing out of heater vents. Car is severely overheated before safe exit from highway. Water pump's plastic impeller had shattered with 53k miles on the car. Ford replaced water pump for $527. After overheating the car also begins to leak oil from several locations. The oil pan gasket is replaced for $407 at 63k miles. The replacement water pump's gasket is discovered to be leaking at 66k miles while trying to locate the source of additional oil leaks - this time the oil pressure sending unit.

This car has been nothing but problems, springs, brakes last 4 months, water pumps went at 63,000, tires wear out in less than a year, temperature gauges do not read right. Engine races, solenoid went. . . . Very expensive to fix. I do not understand why everyone is having the same problems but no help?.
Suffered a water pump failure. The plastic/bakelite impeller shattered catastrophically, resulting in parts strewn throughout coolant system. Total repair cost: $470. Since part was replaced at an independent garage, Ford will not report the faulty part. Perhaps propylene glycol, the principle chemical found in coolant, causes the plastic part to become brittle and shatter, but no one at Ford will listen to that. Numerous complaints found on web regarding this same issue. Time for a recall - the toronto field office told me that there is no recall on this problem.
Engine light stays on; air conditioner will only work on high; will not work on low; relative has same car 2000 model - - having same problem.

I've had to replace the water pump 4 times on my 1998 Ford Contour. Dec. 28, 2001 - 1st incident: water pump failure, also had to replace sensor and thermostat because the radiator had zero water in it. March 26, 2002 - 2nd incident: water pump failure. May 24, 2002 - 3rd incident: water pump failure. October 24, 2002 - 4th incident: water pump failure, also had to have a belt on the pump replaced. I called norma at the Ford customer relationship center (1-800-392-3673) and she told me there is nothing that Ford can do since the parts warranty (12 month/12,000 miles) is over the mileage. I will have to pay for the replacement of a water pump and if there are future failures under the warranty once I've paid for the repairs it will be replaced at no charge. I informed norma that the dealership stated that they have other customers having the same problems with the water pump failure/defect and that Ford is aware of the problem. The dealership has graciously paid for a rental car for all 4 replacements and has given me a discount on labor for this 4th replacement. Also my check engine light continually stays on even after being "serviced" by the dealership. Dt.
Wiring to cooling system melted. Also, each time consumer takes vehicle to dealer she is told that nothing is wrong with vehicle.

Plastic impeller blades on water pump have reportedly failed on numerous Contours, resulting in engine overheating. Coolant from reservoir sprayed inside engine compartment. Upon lifting hood, boiling coolant was visible in reservoir. This presents an injury hazard from the hot coolant, as well as from possible engine failure during vehicle use.
While driving driver's side seat came loose and fell into the floor of vehicle, almost caused an accident, consumer stated the frame of the seat was crtacked. The recall (99b23) on the water pump expired because the dealer was booked up several times and the consumer was unable to leave the vehicle at the dealer.
The original water pump on this engine has a plastic impeller which is prone to failure. I have talked to several owners of this same car who experienced this identical problem. I believe the water pump design is defective.
Consumer was traveling on highway, and without prior warning water pump shut down, and transmission vibrated when applying brakes. Dealership was aware of problem.
No summary listed for above vehicle.
Water pump failure @ 78000 miles - report early failure.
Consumer states the water pump failed.
Consumer states the water pump failed.
Water pump impeller failure.
1998 Ford Contour se, 2. 5l v6 - water pump impeller shattered while driving on highway, causing loss of coolant flow. Engine overheated. Fortunately there was a Lincoln-Mercury dealer less than 1 mile away from the location where the part failed, so engine did not run in overheating condition for very long. Water pump was replaced by this local dealer ($371 total). The car is still my daily driver, and now appears to be operating normally with the new water pump.
Water pump assembly and timing belt were replaced.

Defroster will not work, will block the view and could cause an accident. Also the check engine light was on, coolant leaking, engine overheating, transmission was inoperative, and the water pump was leaking.
Many other Ford Contour owners experienced this problem as well. . Read more...
While driving engine overheated. Then, took vehicle to dealer. Dealer found out that problem was with water pump that malfuntioned, and caused overheating. The empellor fell apart causing the engine to over heat.
Asked dealership to perform recall 00v-367000 and they said Ford has no such recall.
Water pump stopped working while consumer was driving and caused engine to overheat and stop. Contacted dealer, and dealer wouldn't do anything.
The water pump and now the fuel pump. This has been a very bad experience with Ford the inconvience and the freedom of purchasing a new car has left me frustrated and afraid to trust the car.
While driving, engine overheated, dealer stated that vehicle is not covered under manufacturer's recall due to VIN, consumer feels this vehicle should be included.
Recall 99v243000/air bag sensor assembly:dealer:m&m Ford, muscatine, IA; phone 563-263-5324 refused to honor recall because vehicle had too much mileage. Manufacturer was notified. The water pump failed and was replaced. The consumer states there was a recall on warning light but the dealer did not fix the recall due to high mileage on the vehicle.
While traveling at 75mph the engine water pump goes out. Only thing heard or seen was a engine knock. The engine had to be replaced.
I believe all 1997 Ford Contours should be recalled, over the past 3 years I have replaced the clutch, waterpump, blower motor, both lower control arms, bushings, sway bars, wheel bearings, front & rear brakes and rotors(both twice!!!!), axle, 2 oxygen sensors, catalytic converter, egr valve, coil springs, battery, balljoints, door latch, almost all of the full front suspension!!!! there are more parts that I had replaced but I can't remember all the names of the parts there are too many!! my check engine light will not turn off, seat belt light will not turn off, short in the drivers side power window, the engine will (rev) up by itself when it's in gear and when it's not, short in the drivers side power seats, water leakage in the trunk, a/c leaks onto the passenger side floor, all doors squeak no matter what you do, carpet is falling out, horn will not work most of the time, same for the cruise control, windshield wiper sprayer does not work, knocking noise coming from the engine, ended up in very bad debt because of this and no one will take it, I still owe money on the piece of crap. Contacted Ford motor at one time regarding all the parts I replaced after the first year I had it, they say it's not there problem. Dealership who sold it to me says it was just fine, bull crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I believe that those are too many items for a 1997 to go wrong on.
Plastic impeller disinigrated inside water pump> no indication previously at weep hole> Ford charges $350 to replace after just being there 2 days earlier for timing belt replacement.
The water pump impeller failed. The impeller is made of plastic and it developed cracks. The result was overheating. A water pump failure at 42k miles is unacceptable. Other Contour owners had this problem and there should be a recall.
Vehicle was running hot the 1st time dealer kept it for 2 weeks & claimed it was fixed. Vehicle went to the dealer again this time for 47 days which a loaner vehicle was given & it was returned with no explanation what was wrong. It's still running hot.
Cooling system failed at low mileage for no reason. I was informed by a friend that he was told by a car dealership that there was a "silent recall" on the cooling system and head gasket, when I called they denied it. Water pump, timing belt, serpentine belt, thermostat, sw 5030 switch, dy719 switch, frr2 relay and pressure test cooling system and inspection where done. I had all parts replaced with new Ford parts at non-Ford repair station due to williams Ford bad service and reputation of not fixing cars properly and over charging. I feel that williams Ford should be investgated on how they run the matiance department, myself and people I have meet have had nothing but problems.
While driving back from chicago on i55, the water pump (which supposedly had a recall of which I was not notified) went out. Warning lights did not appear anywhere on the dashboard, and the only indication that anything might be wrong was a whining sound under the hood which stopped after a short interval. Within an hour, the entire car was destroyed. A new engine, water pump, electrical system, and radiator needed to be replaced. All of that is still being done, two weeks later. They have done the work without charge, and have given me a rental car to use in the meantime, however, with a new engine, they are only willing to give me a 9,000 mile warranty on the car repaired. Since this was not my fault, a fairly new car, and a lack of communication on the Ford manufacturer that this was a problem, I feel that a full warranty on the repairs is justified. Additionaly, at the time of this occurrence, I had four middle school students in my care. The thought that the car could have quit in the middle of a six land traffic pattern in chicago without warning, would have been a disastrous accident with all of us possibly being killed. I think that the Ford manufacturer needs to deal with this problem and immediately. Thank you. Ginger granger.
Water pump impeller broke into two pieces imeediately paralizing the entire engine cooling system. This defect, to the best of my knowledge is common for Ford Contours equipped with 2. 5l v6 duratec engines. Although not directly related to passenger safety in the traditional sense, this defect is potentially very dangerous. I think Ford should recall the part given the number of failures.
