I have a 1999 Ford Contour I bought it and 6 months later the timing belt went out this cost me $800. 00 out of pocket after the warranty paid their part. Drove it another 3 months when it stalled out and started sputtering I replaced the plugs, wires, ignition control box, and fuel filter and found a hose that had a hole in it from being melted after replacing all of that found the transmission to be leaking and no way to get to it easily. Still ran crappy took it to a garage and was told they could not figure it out brought it home and it won't run anymore it still does not run not sure what else to do had to buy another vehicle to get to and from work while still paying on this one and can not use it anymore. This is my second Ford and I will not ever get another one. And with all this going on when the mechanic shut the back passenger the glass shattered and it was shut normally. Also the radio has issues.

Original start date 1-12-07. Timing belt shredded. Had shop fix the problem. 4-2-07 belt broke again replaced again. 10-18-07 timing belt broke again. Shop did not want to replace again said it is dealer problem. Dealer says shop problem. Shop says it will fix on 11-2-07. Shop finally fixes on 11-4-05. Car not running right take back to dealer on 11-5-07. Dealer says wasn't fixed properly. 11-8-07 pick up from dealer and they state we should have any more problems. If so bring back under warranty. 3-13-08 dealer now states belt broke and not covered and other major problems. Almost 1600 to fix. Still can't give me specific reason to why belt keeps shredding. Now what is one to do? I have put alot of money into this and can't get a real answer. Also in the past shop printed out other reports from NHTSA sight about the same problem with this same car in different states. But yet dealer says don't know of any other problem like this with this kind of car.
1999 Ford Contour, check engine" light came on, car jerking/stalling, took it to local mechanic who could not diagnose problem, then had to have car towed to local Ford delaership (key scales Ford, lessburg, florida), they kept car for 2 days, charged over $800 to replace the timing belt, attempted to charge an additional $165 to replece spark plugs (service declined, spark plugs replaced by local mechanic for $50), "check engine" light still on, car still jerking/stalling. Afraid to drive car out of immediate neighborhood. Local mechanic suggested possibly catalytic converter problem but said it could not even be tested because of the position of the converter is in the middle of the manifold and is inaccessible. Local Ford dealership has not replied to email requesting additional investigation.
The consumer believes that the rubber odor he smelled inside the passenger compartment of the vehicle came from the belts in the engine.
Timing belt idler pulley is broken after only 60,000 miles. It has shredded a bit of the lower timing belt cover and causes a whirring noise while the engine is on. This has happened even though the car has been maintained well and driven carefully.
Shreds timing chain belts every 40-100 miles, 8 replacements in 3 months. Pulleys, tensioner and belt all replaced repeatedly by Ford dealership and they are trying to say it's normal.
The contact owns a 1999 Ford Contour. The contact received a letter from the manufacturer stating that the dashboard needed to be replaced. After the replacement was made, the dashboard developed a gap next to the passenger side vent, which over time, caused the vent to sink behind the dashboard. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer (ken gordon Ford) and had it repaired. While driving approximately 55 mph under normal conditions, the vehicle overheated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the thermostat was repaired. A few days later the vehicle overheated again. The contact discovered that the timing belt and water pump needed to be replaced. The current and failure mileages were 100,000.

Also the timing belt is broken and there's nothing on owner's guide that tells you to change timing belt after 60,000 miles. Engine light on after one month of buying this car I call the dealer made appointments few times but the problem never went away, few times I had to pay for them to check on the way home the light is back on , I call them back and ask what's the problem , what's the purpose of me taking a day off to bring the car to be fix and the problem still exist. , their remark was there's 23 sensor and they could'nt tell which one it was. Now I'm stuck paying 1 1/2 yrs on a car that I don't have , still have to came up with money to get a new engine in which I don't have , bumping ride to and from work, cancel all my appts. And begging people for rides so I can pick up kids from school and food shopping, I can't take the kids to do anything because I have no car that's not fare. Thank-you for all your help ,thank-you again.
There seemed to be no warning regarding this problem, other than a slight high pitched whining noise in the am. , much like the sound of a serpentine belt. The transmission fluid level was appropriate when checked. The computer reading has stated several problems, including a bad clutch. It will cost $2000. 00 for a rebuilt transmission.
Intermittently under wet conditions vehicle will stall out and die. Dealer has inspected vehicle and adjusted belts. Please specify which belts, and provide additional information.

Took my car in for rattling when driving and steering. They ordered tack shield and bolts. Took it back in, they installed parts and said it didn't fix the problem. Had to order rack and pinion. Kept the car until that came in and installed it. A few days later it started squealing and smoking. Took it back in and they said it was leaking power steering fluid but they didn't know why. They kept it for a week, decided it was a defective part and installed another rack and pinion. Got it back and it was still rattling and now it has a low growl sound at an idle. Took it back. They had to replace the idler pulley and the right swade bar link. The growl is still there but they're saying that is now normal. It is not normal. It was not there until they started screwing around in there. This car is a piece of junk!.
Vehicle has knocking sound in the engine area because of timing belt loose. Yh.
Engine belt that dealer put on made the car have a whistling sound. Then belt popped and shredded like ribbon.
First day car was bought engine died, took to dealer, and they gave consumer another Contour. Currently, vehcile will shut off in middle of intersection. Dealer replaced transmission, and engine was acting up. When it rains alot serpentine belt skips and I lose steering power. The last time it happened I nearly struck a concrete wall. I called the dealer and the manager played dumb saying that he was not aware of a dealer notice. I checked your web page and there is a service bulletin. I am afraid if this were to happen at speed or on a curve that I or my children could be seriously injured if involved in a crash.
