36 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 11/18/2019

Current issue is head gasket overheated and blew. Coolant is internally leaking into the engine. Car blows out a ton of exhaust while driving and has the smell of coolant in it. I can't even drive on the highway anymore because the car overheats and limits my speed to 45 mph. Sometimes I have to pull over just to let it cool down. Every time the car starts up it vibrates so much that its quite annoying. Sometimes the car shuts off right after I start it in the morning, right after a crazy burst of vibration. A little over a month ago I started my car and it vibrated so much and then so much oil leaked from my car, exhaust blew out dark black smog and smoke was coming from my hood. Car is really loud on idle, never been in a car so loud with so much vibration all throughout the car. Car constantly overheats and has no power when driving. Car vibrates insanely when I'm idle at a red light. Check engine light goes on and off every other day. My mechanic has done research on the car and says to get rid of it, it's not even worth fixing; he says you'll end up spending just as much money fixing this in the long run than just buying a new car. My mechanic said fixing the head gasket wont solve your problem, you need an entire new engine and cylinder block. We've been doing a lot of research on this car/model and everyone's having the same issues and can't really get down to the bottom line on what's wrong with the vehicle. I'm curious if everyone has the same problem with this car/model that there's no major recall on it. Instead people are driving around with a loud car that constantly vibrates, leaks coolant into the engine and having to constantly take it to the shop.

37 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 10/09/2019

My 2014 Ford Escape with close to 69k miles on it started running rough, felt and sounded like it had to do with timing is the vehicle. Check engine light came on days later and around the same time noticed low coolant alerts. Topped off coolant but also noticed coolant would be returned to reservoir when removing the cap to refill. Car continues to run rough so I take it in to my local mechanic. Code comes back saying it's a coil package. Repairs are made, car runs great and check engine light is off. A day later the light comes back on and so does the low coolant warning. Top off coolant and decide to take it into a dealer. I do my research online and find this is is quite a common problem with these vehicles. Dealer tells me I have a coolant leak in cylinder 3 much like other reports I read. They claim it's a different issue from the coolant recall Ford issued. I have a hard time believing this is the case and am mindblown Ford doesn't have a remedy for this issue.

38 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2019

Coolant leaking in #3 cyl, looks to be a bad casting in the block from factory, overheats and uses coolant.

39 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 09/03/2019

Tl-the contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 35 mph, the low coolant warning light illuminated continuously. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where they informed the contact that there was coolant in the vehicle. The contact was able to drive away with the vehicle however, the failure persisted and the vehicle was reading overheating causing the vehicle to stall. The vehicle was unable to restart. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that there was air in the coolant line. The vehicle was repaired but the failure persisted a week later. The vehicle was taken back to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the coolant was low in the vehicle and was burning eternally but there was no leak and informed the contact to take the vehicle to a Ford dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was taken to specialize independent mechanic where they informed the contact that her vehicle was having issue as of a recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 17v209000 ( engine and engine cooling). The approximate failure mileage was 94,000. Ak.

40 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 08/22/2019

Coolant constantly leaking and engine getting very hot, currently putting coolant in daily.

41 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 08/14/2019

My car coolant is always leaking have to fill out and fix most of the time. The transmission was suddenly failed even only 80000k mileage and service center for replacement cost is $6000. That's really ridiculous.

42 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 08/13/2019

Tl- the contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated that white smoke would emit from the engine upon start of the vehicle. The contact also stated that he had noticed that both oil and coolant had leaked from his vehicle as the low coolant warning message had illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact had not spoken to a dealer in regards to his failure. Upon investigation, the contact linked his failure to NHTSA campaign number: 17v209000(engine and engine cooling); however, his vehicle had not been included in the recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to NHTSA, they offered no further assistance. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure millage was approximately 50,000. Jo.

43 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2019

Vehicle needs "new engine" as diagnosed by tapper Ford dealership, paw paw mi. Was told the "block" was bad after "coolant leaked into engine" from head gasket cracked. This vehicle has a recall stating "localized overheating of the engine cylinder head may cause the cylinder head to crack". This vehicle was at stand still in traffic jam on highway7/25/19 warning sounds and message appeared on dashboard of vehicle stating to pull over due to engine overheating. Vehicle was driven 1 more mile to highway exit, pulled into gas station at exit, hood opened to show no coolant present in tank. Vehicle allowed to cool for 30min, placed appropriate amount of orange coolant in tank as instructed to by manual and drove care another hour without issue. Next morning coolant tank checked and noted no coolant present, again placed appropriate amount in tank as manual states, drove vehicle another hour. Coolant level checked for next few days and had no issue. Coolant level check prior to driving vehicle home from northern michigan, again none present in tank, again added appropriate amount of coolant, drove home approx. 350miles without issue. Next morning (Sunday, August 4th, 2019) started SUV, entire vehicle was shaking, large amount of white thick exhaust present, sweet smelling. Vehicle brought to local mechanic, stated head gasket needed replaced and stated a recall was out for an issue with a sensor that could malfunction and cause this damage. Vehicle was towed to tapper Ford dealership in paw, paw mi for further evaluation. This dealership told us that an entire new engine was needed and would not be covered by Ford. The problems with the engine of this vehicle is due to the recall stated above. How can Ford refuse to fix this problem at a cost to them? was given a phone quote of "$8,000. 00" for the new engine. I do have a video of the white thick exhaust.

44 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2019

My car is throwing p0303 code cylinder 3 misfire and also loosing engine coolant. Car has gone into limp mode. There was a recall but it didn't fix the issue. There are several forums with many people having the same problem with mechanics telling them that its a head gasket issue and they need a new engine. My car has 109,000 miles. We replaced the spark plugs and switched the coils to see if the misfire would switch and it hasn't. We have drained and refilled the coolant and it is still loosing but no visible leaks. Car sometimes starts rough.

45 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2019

Vehicle will stop running while in motion without warning. Also gives off heavy exhaust smell. There is only 100k miles on it. It is due to a coolant leak into the cylinder 3 causing a gasket to blow (see attachment for invoice and details). We were told by the car shop that this has happened to at least 5 other Ford Escape owners (we aren't in a heavily populated area, so this is significant). Car is not safe to drive due to high risk of becoming stranded, which is not safe due to traffic, children on board, hot weather, and so on.

46 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 06/24/2019

Vehicle is overheating. Coolant level stays low even after refilling. No visible leaks.

47 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 06/11/2019

The car began to overheat one morning while it was being driven on a city street about 45-50 mph. The car had been parked overnight for 8-10 hours before being driven. There were no visible signs of leaking coolant where the car had been parked. When coolant was added after the car had cooled off it poured out the bottom of the car. It was taken to a mechanic and there was a leak/hole in the coolant tank.

48 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 06/07/2019

On may 13, 2019 took my car to world Ford to fix door recall, as I was there was told I needed brake and transmission fluid replaced. After I got my car back I was sitting idle and my temp gauge when to high turn off engine safely. I checked the coolant level it was low added water. I didn't have to do this every day. On may 31st, check engine light came on, my husband checked the dip stick which had no oil on it. I had the car towed to world Ford, who stated I needed a new engine because I had metal shavings in my engine and oil all over my car from an oil leak. They told me it was the people who change my oil last, I spoke with that company and have had both the owners go to world Ford, who has yet to return either of their phone calls. I have pictures of oil underneath my car, which in turn has all stemmed from my coolant being low and overheating my engine that has caused an oil leak. I called Ford and was told they have no resources to fix my car and I can pay for it and if they do come up with a program I might be able to be reimbursed. World Ford called me on June 14th and said they fixed the coolant recall, but no one is fixing my engine so I can come get the car. This is absolutely ridiculous that because of their faulty engineering I have been without a car for 3 weeks.

49 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 06/07/2019

This vehicle should have been included in a 2017 safety recall related to overheating and coolant leaks, but it was not. In February 2019, it overheated with little warning on the freeway, blowing a hole in the motor (at 62k miles). Ford rejected request for assistance, so repair was done by independent mechanic (motor replaced). Three months later, during freeway drive, message appeared several times stating power was being cut to keep engine from overheating (no indication engine actually was overheating). Ultimately, message appeared warning to pull off the road immediately. Overheated engine completely melted a bracket. Mechanic identified a burnt-out sensor but could not say why it happened. I secured two dealership diagnostics. First conducted comprehensive diagnostic and concluded a waste gate was stuck open; no mention of damaged sensor. Second said the degas bottle was cracked and declined to perform pressure test; no mention of damaged sensor or waste gate issue. I cannot afford all these random repairs and in any case, do not feel this car can be put into a safe condition for driving.

50 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 05/25/2019

My 2014 Ford Escape was effected by a recall issue in November 2018, the engine overheats causing the coolant container to crack and leak. I paid $175 to replace the coolant container in June 2018. However in November 2018 my car completely turned off while driving on busy city street at stop light and smoke started coming in through the vents and the engine caught on fire. We never received notice of a recall until after this incident occured. After 30 days Ford finally accepted responsibility and paid $9500 to replace the damage. The vehicle probably should have been totalled. The day I got it back from the dealership I had noticed a change in the transmission. I made the dealership aware but they said they didn't notice a difference. My transmission completely died 4 months later while driving and I have been trying to get ahold of someone from Ford corporation since, it has been waiting at a different Ford dealership for a month and a half ago. Today we finally received a call from the Ford goodwill department offering $1200 off the total cost of over $5200. Unfortunately we cannot afford the $4000 and they will not pay anything of we decide to had a used transmission put in. They will not give us a phone number or email to Ford legal just a fax. Someone did tell us on Friday they were transferring our case to legal and would call the dealership and us on Monday but they did not and the person I talked to today says there is no record of us speaking to anyone Friday or anything being transferred to legal. It has been impossible to get any information from anyone and we are unsure what we should do. I have a warranty from the work done in November regarding the recall issue but Ford is saying this is unrelated and will not be covered, but also will not tear apart the transmission to determine the actual cause due to the labor cost unless we pay for that as well.

51 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 05/22/2019

While driving about 45 mph on a city street, the car began to flash warning signals stating to pull over immediately. When I looked at the temperature gauge it was all the way on hot, but had not started smoking yet. The dealership stated that the head gasket failed which resulted in the overheating. The car was bought certified pre-owned from a Ford dealership in 2017, and I have already had to replace the transmission, a coolant leakage problem, brand new brakes, new tires due to "wear and tear," and now this. My commute home from work takes about an hour on a highway then city street, and while on the highway the car gave no signal to the rising temperature. While on the city street I was at a red light, and once I started to drive again the car then flashed to pull over and the engine light came on. Looking at the problems other Ford Escape 2014 car owners have had, and the recalls that occurred before my car, it seems that this engine problem is being experienced amongst others, and could be due to the coolant recall that occurred in April of 2017. Personally, I bought my car in September of 2017 and was unaware of such recall.

52 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 05/09/2019

I began losing coolant after taking my car in for coolant level sensor recall. I added water a few times before I decided not to drive it anymore. Couldn't figure out what was happening to my 5 year old less than 50,ooo mile car. Couldn't see any leak on the ground, decided to check oil, dip stick came back with water in the oil. Had it towed to Ford and my engine is blown, water all in th engine.

53 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 04/23/2019

My car was serviced for the coolant related recall. Less than a month later the low coolant light came on and I brought the vehicle back in for service. They didn't see a leak and believed there must have been an air bubble in the system that worked itself out and added more coolant. Less than a month after that the low coolant light came back on again and I brought the vehicle in to be serviced. They determined that there's an internal leak and coolant had been leaking into the engine. They have recommended replacing the engine and say that this issue is different than the coolant related recall that my car had been originally serviced for. This car is a 2014 with less than 100k miles on it. It should not need a new engine.

54 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 03/23/2019

Low coolant light appeared. Had oil changed/fluids topped. A week later, coolant light appeared and check engine light came on. Took it back to place that changed my oil. Coolant was not low. They used a diagnostic code reader that indicated cylinder 2 had misfired 3 times (I was unaware). A few days later, took it to have checked (firestone). They used a diagnostic code that said the same thing but one of the mechanics related he had just fixed a Ford Escape having the same issue and that they had then figured out there was a recall for the problem. Ford says my VIN is not included in the recall. There has been no leak noted this entire time. The engine light went off. I drove it approximately 25 minutes, went in to a business for 2 hours, came back out and started the car, pulled out of the parking lot and saw the check engine light and a message that the engine was overheating and pull over safely (which I did immediately). There was no obvious sign that the engine was overheating (steam, odor, leaking, etc). The vehicle would only start, but would not accelerate at all. Had it towed to johnson city Ford which told me that they would have to drop the engine to determine the cause ($1700) and that the total repair job would cost between $3500-$7000+ depending on the cause and damage (may have to have a new motor!). He then told me it would be about 3 +weeks before they could repair it since there are 5 just like it waiting to be serviced! I questioned him about this. He related that there were 5 Ford Escapes with a coolant low/overheating issue currently in their shop. My vehicle was bought brand new. It is garage kept and serviced regularly. I do not understand how a vehicle that is well-kept and has under 90,000 miles can suddenly, without warning or reason, have this kind of issue? why hasn't there been a recall on this issue?.

55 Coolant Leaking problem

56 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 03/06/2019

Manufacturer name : Ford motor company NHTSA recall no. / mfr recall no. : 17v-209 / 17s09 recall subject : engine cylinder head may leak oil when sitting at a stop light, a message came up on my message board "service engine now". The vehicle started to shudder and then smoke came out from under my hood. I turned the vehicle off immediately, while still sitting at the light, and got out. The vehicle was inspected by a Ford dealership and stated the head needed to be replaced due to a cracked cylinder head with an estimated of $3500. 00. I did not receive notice of the recall referenced above. My vehicle has been "losing" coolant, which I had been refilling quite often with no visible leaks or puddles. If I had known of the recall this could have been prevented. Due to an issue by the manufacturer, I am now somehow responsible to fix their problem. This has happened on many other vehicles and should be corrected by the company. I am thankful I did not have my young daughter with me at the time.

57 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 02/19/2019

Tl- the contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated the vehicle the contact stated that while driving at 40 mph in 2017, the vehicle lost leaked coolant and lost power. The check engine light illuminated. The vehicle was pulled over and the contact noticed fire from the engine. The contact went to look for fire extinguisher and when he came back, the fire extinguished by itself. The vehicle was towed the trophy Ford dealer, located at 288 harold g clarke pkwy, forsyth, GA 31029 where it was diagnosed that the vehicle was out of coolant. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and sent investigators to evaluate the vehicle. The engine was replaced. The contact later received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 17v209000 (engine and engine cooling) the vehicle was taken to the five star Ford Lincoln of warner robins dealer, located at 900 russell pwky, warner robins, GA 31088 where the recall was repaired. The contact stated that when the vehicle was started, the vehicle shook and was taken back the dealer who performed the recall. The technician diagnosed a catastrophic engine failure and topped the coolant. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and the contact was not called back. The failure mileage was approximately 58,000. Fe.

58 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 01/30/2019

Recall performed (17s09) coolant sensor upgrade. The new sensor but the vehicle in (limp mode) can not drive it even though the coolant level was in the normal operating level. The mechanic indicated that a leak in the top hose was the issue and that there was a redesign of a known issue. Lucky the vehicle was parked and had to be towed back to the dealership.

59 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2019

My car kept shutting off on me and I took it to my dealer and they said the coolant was leaking into my cylinder head and I needed a new engine. I see on here that there are multiple recalls for this model dealing with the coolant leaking. However, the dealer called Ford and was told it was not covered. My car is only 4 years old and I need a complete new engine for $9,000 dollars. I'm not sure who to complain to or how to get this handled but I don't have $9k laying around. I work two jobs as it is and I can't afford it.

60 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 12/19/2018

My 2014 Ford Escape, with a 1. 6l gtdi ecoboost engine, built in louisville, ky in March 2014 leaks engine coolant. I purchased this vehicle on June 6, 2014. I have put my VIN into the NHTSA national recall site and it says my car is not recalled. However, Ford safety recall 17s09 supplemental #1, dated December 13, 2017, and NHTSA campaign number 17v209, affecting 230,000 2014 Escapes clearly states that my vehicle, manufactured in March 2014, should be in the recall since it was built in louisville between Feb 13, 2013 and sept 2, 2014, the recall timeline. My car, leaking engine coolant, is exactly that described in Ford safety recall 17s09. In the past 10 weeks or so I have noticed coolant on my garage floor and have filled the coolant reservoir at least 8 times. At one time the heater did not work and the reservoir was nearly empty. I am concerned about the possibility of an overheated engine causing the cylinder to crack and spew oil resulting in a possible engine fire. I currently have approximately 39,000 miles on this vehicle. If this vehicle VIN is not recalled, I certainly would like a detailed answer why it is not since it meets all the parameters of safety recall 17s09 supplemental #1 and NHTSA campaign number 17v209. Thank you.

61 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 12/03/2018

Coolant leak. No sensor warning light. No recall notice. Message stated car was overheating while idling in a drive-thru. Added coolant. Several months later, same situation, different drive-thru. Coolant added.

62 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 11/20/2018

Engine stalled during highway cruise(70 mph), lost all throttle response. Lighting, brake, steering worked fine. Coolant leakage was observed under the hood after parking. After the vehicle was towed to a Ford dealer, service people reported engine wirings were burned out due to fire.

63 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 11/13/2018

Engine light came on one day then went off the next day. A week later went to get routine oil change and was notified of oil in coolant and possible head gasket cracked as well. They recommended take it to mechanic next door. Apparently the engine cylinder head overheated and cracked. Oil leaked into other systems in engine contaminated valves, intakes, spark plugs etc. Could have combusted causing fire at any moment. Mechanic told us to have it towed to Ford not safe to drive 3 miles. Got car fixed at Ford dealership for $3551. 09. The following week we received a recall notice for our other 2014 Ford Escape built in same louisville factory a few weeks earlier than the just repaired Escape. Got the recall addressed on that vehicle but Ford says the VIN for the one I just paid for has not been identified for the recall! really???.

64 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 11/09/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated that the instrument panel indicators illuminated and smoke appeared under the hood. The vehicle was pulled over and the contact discovered that coolant was leaking. The contact let the vehicle cool off and added more coolant. The vehicle was towed to coconut point Ford (22400 s tamiami trail, estero, FL 33928, (888) 859-1976) where it was diagnosed that coolant leaked out from a defective unknown part that was not covered under the extended warranty. The manufacturer stated that there was no recall on the vehicle and would open a case to see if they could provide assistance towards the repair costs since the warranty had just expired. The failure mileage was 67,000.

65 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 11/09/2018

High engine temp, pull over safely message flashes on display and engine light comes on. Car started running rough. Fortunately was just pulling out of my driveway and didn't get over 5 mph. I backed up into garage, turned off car. Started it again and when I got to same spot (approximately 1/8 mile) the same warnings popped up. Towed to dealer upon their advise. Now they are telling me, after having the car for 6 days, that it's either the head gasket or block cracked due to coolant being low. They tested coolant and confirmed it is leaking internally. Note - I did have the recall related to the issue performed in February 2018. Now, with only 1 month left on original warranty but at 61,500 miles (so over by a smidge), Ford will not repair car. If the recall was performed but the car exhibited the problem anyways, no matter how far it was driven since then, that tells me that the recall solution did not work.

66 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 10/13/2018

I previously filed a report due to the engine coolant low light coming on. Took car to the dealer where they ran test and discovered coolant had leaked into the engine and oil and that the engine would have to be replaced. Quoted a price of $6,400+/- when they pulled the engine they removed the turbo for re-use. Upon removal of the turbo, bearings and shrouds of metal feel out. I was told that there was catastrophic failure and that the bearings and metal had exploded into the aluminum engine block causing a crack and allowing coolant into the engine and oil. I'm still waiting on the repair to be completed, and know the cost appears to be around $7,500+/-. Still haven't heard back from Ford. This could have been bad of the engine shut down while driving.

67 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2018

Coolant overflow tank is leaking resulting in low levels of coolant. Coolant was noticed under the car at 3 separate occasions. Noticed a recall including 2014 Ford Escapes with 1. 6 liter turbocharged 4 cylinder engine however my VIN was not included and I feel it should have been included. Recall states that low levels of coolant can cause the head to crack leading to an engine fire.

68 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 09/24/2018

My car with only 34,000 miles overheated driving on the highway. I take my car for for oil changes and service regularly. There was no indication of a problem until this happened. My mechanic said I was low on coolant and after further testing said I had a leak. He then told me that there was a recall on 2014 Ford Escapes for this exact problem. Ford's number for this recall is 17s09. I called my Ford dealer and was told that even tough my car was having the same issue my particular car was not part of the recall and I would have to pay to have the car fixed. Thinking this was outrageous I called Ford directly. They as well told me the same thing. After further research I see that I am not the only 2014 Ford Escape owner that has been told that although they have this same safety issue our vehicle is not included in the recall. I believe further investigation needs to be done and more cars included in this recall.

69 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2018

2014 Escape recalled to fix coolant leak. 6 months later the coolant is leaking and warped the head gasket. Had the vehicle towed to Ford, they are trying to deny responsibility, despite the service department directly stating on my invoice "engine coolant leak caused head gasket to warp. " my car has been at the dealership for 15 days and they still have not worked on it because they are arguing who is responsible with my warranty company. It seems like a lot of people are experiencing the same poor workmanship. I am now contacting an attorney, with all these cases we may have a class action suit against Ford.

70 Coolant Leaking problem

Failure Date: 09/07/2018

Vehicle erratically displays overheating visual and audible alarm during motion or stationary. After vehicle is turned off for a few seconds, alarms go off and temperature gage returns to normal operating temperature. Check engine light on for a while, then off, then back on. Drove to Ford dealer for service (didn't notice any performance issues), and they state that the engine needs to be replaced, because of a crack in the coolant resevoir, and coolant is getting into cylinder #3. I don't know how these are related. I have never noticed a coolant leak or steam/smoke in the exhaust.
