38 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2007 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 10/01/2013

2002 Ford Escape. Consumer writes in regards to abs recall notice. The consumer took his daughters vehicle to the dealer, after receiving a recall notice in the mail. The consumer informed the service advisor, the abs light had been coming on and going off for a while. Upon the return of the vehicle, the abs light was on continuously. The consumer returned to the service desk and reported the issue and he was informed he could leave the vehicle for diagnosis, but there would be a fee of $ 130. 00. The consumer refused and then took the vehicle to a local repair shop. The local repair shop informed the consumer, the problem they were encountering was an abs code b1676 which was a result of no electrical power to the abs module. The repair shop stated, because the light would no longer go out, that the current situation was caused by performing the work on the recall. They also explained, that the recall that was performed was to add power to the junction block to supply electricity to the abs module in such a way the vehicle would not catch fire, and that power was not being supplied to two of the wires at all. The repair shop discovered there were two incorrect splices performed at the dealer. Apparently, there were two splices that should have been made and the mechanic only put a heat-shrink tape on the connection and did not electrically connect the wires. After the repair of the two splices, the shop found that one of the two wires supplying power to the abs module still only had three volts at one of the connectors. The shop found additional recalls as well. After inspecting the harness per the recall notice, he found the insulation on some of the wires damaged and one of the wires was corroded internally causing the low voltage problem. He also noted that the inspection cover on the connector had been removed for inspection and the master cylinder cap looked newer and not the original. Additionally, when he removed the connector from the abs unit, there was no grease applied in the cavity like the recall instructed.

39 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2005 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 09/24/2013

Abs light suddenly came on and I had to press the brakes almost all the way to the floor to stop the car. I pulled over and turned the car off. When I started the car back up, there was no abs light or service engine indicator. Mechanic said that I need to replace the master cylinder and possibly the hcu. But they don't know if that will fix it.

40 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 04/23/2013

During lunch hour slowed to make a right hand turn and brakes seemed to lock and grind. Steering wheel vibrated and the abs and traction control light came on. Attempted to accelerate and the car seemed to be locked up for a few seconds. Vehicle behind me almost hit me due to vehicle failure. Lights would not go off for about 1 minute after accelerating to about 25 mph. While driving about 10 more minutes they illuminated several more times. During drive home the same thing happened 3 more times and always when slowing to make a turn and then attempting to accelerate again. Now abs light won't go off at all.

41 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2007 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 03/09/2013

First, the vehicle has been regularly maintained per the normal maintenance schedule. While driving on 03/09/13, noticed the abs dash light stayed lit. The 4wd dash light also started to blink intermittently. On 03/11/13 I called the local Ford dealer and scheduled an appointment to have the problems diagnosed. The vehicle was diagnosed with a broken tone ring along with marginal brake pads. Reportedly the abs and 4wd sensors are interconnected. Reportedly, the front rotors had to be replaced because they were too pitted to be turned. Questioned the service department about service bulletins or recalls, none were list on the Escape concerning this issue. According to one of the service managers, the problem with the tone ring is not a common issue. While waiting on he repairs, I checked the internet and found that this is a common problem with repeat failures of the part. I presented this info to the service department without any relief or recourse other that I would probably have to pay to have this done again. Another note, the repairs have a 12 month, 12,000 mile warranty. If the defective part has to be replaced, the warranty goes back to the original date of install. This appears to be a common problem with possible serious repercussions which is not being addressed by Ford.

43 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2001 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 09/06/2012

I own 3 Ford Escapes and all 3 have same safety issue. I learned on google that I am not alone. It is a very common problem. I am talking about abs tone ring which cracks and causes abs to malfunction. It becomes a serious issue when it happens while driving. Initial malfunction causes on-board computer to "be confused" and brakes don't perform as they should, causing extended braking distance. Once on-board computer "recognizes" the problem abs dashboard light will come on and the driver is aware of the issue. Broken abs tone ring will cause abs brakes to engage on dry surface even at the lowest speeds. This failure becomes serious issue at the moment of initial malfunction because the driver is caught by surprise. Please view comments by others at the link below. 44 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2005 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 08/01/2012

In Aug 2012 we were on our way back from a vacation and our abs light came on, along with a flashing 4x4 light. We had no idea what it was or what to do. The vehicle drove fine and stopped fine, except for a couple of times it felt as if the abs engaged on dry cement. We stopped to eat and shop for a few hours and the lights were off when we got back in the vehicle. They didn't come on again until a few days ago (Jan 2013). However, I had been complaining to my husband recently that the brakes didn't seem to work right. I hit ice and the abs didn't engage . . No light either. . But the grinding sound once in awhile was still there. So we took it in and put it on the computer to diagnose the problem. Came back with 2 codes u2023 and c1234. Which means the right front tone ring is bad. After searching the internet, I found this to be a very common problem. Also got under the truck and sure enough the tone ring is cracked and spinning around loosely. The safety issue here is the abs will lock up randomly on dry cement when you start to apply your brakes. Which then you can't completely control your vehicles direction and if you take your foot off the break to control your vehicle, then you may hit someone or something. I am thankful for all the info I have found so when it gets repaired they can't screw me over.

47 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2004 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 04/19/2012

Driving on a state highway approaching a red light, I applied brakes and felt a pulsing sensation in the brake pedal, it became very hard to stop and I had to pull to the shoulder of the road. This has happened several more times since, at various speeds and with no warning. The abs light on the dash does not come on and there are no obd codes. The vehicle becomes very hard to stop. I had the vehicle checked by my mechanic this week. He felt the problem once, but could not find any problems or obd codes, even after running diagnostic tests. At this point I am in a quandry; I need to use the vehicle, but feel it is unsafe to do so and will probably park it until someone can tell me what is happening and find a resolution. I have read of similar problems due to a defective 'tone ring' in the abs system, but mine is not defective.

49 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 03/24/2012

The abs light and tracking light comes on dashboard indicating a problem. When I go to stop there is this tracking resistance when apply brakes. Fords dealership tells me the right abs ring is cracked on the brakes. Got fixed, now this has happened 2 more times, once on left side and twice on right side. When I had to stop suddenly the brakes feel like they don't work and make this tracking noise as like when you are on ice. Very scary, my car now has 145,000 miles this last time. How long does it take Fords to make a recall on this part, my son says that the water gets up in it and causes it to rust and crack. I'm sure I am not the only Ford Escape 2008 with this problem.

50 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2002 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 03/01/2012

The contact owns a 2002 Ford Escape. The contact stated that the abs warning light remained illuminated and the abs motor continued running once the engine was turned off. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign id number: 12v005000 (service brakes, hydraulic: antilock: control unit/module) prior to the failure. The contact was unable to have the vehicle serviced under the recall within a reasonable time period and believed that the failure was caused by the lack of recall service. The manufacture was contacted and denied any assistance with repairs, stating that the hydraulic control unit was not associated with the recall campaign. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and the current mileage was 120,000.

51 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2002 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 01/16/2012

When I first start my vehicle and begin driving it, unless I reach 20 mph before needing to brake, the brakes make a grinding noise and at first the pedal resists, then it gives way in, causing the brake to need to pressed down completely before the vehicle will come to a stop. Once I reach the 20 mph or so, the abs light comes on, and after that, the brakes work fine. I took it to my Ford dealership, they reportedly did not find a problem with the brakes, but performed a recall on only the abs light itself. This did nothing for the grinding resistance and failure of the brake pedal upon initially needing to stop, and still the abs light pops on once I reach 20-25 mph.

52 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2003 Ford Escape

55 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2006 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 02/16/2011

I was driving home from work, going about 35 mph when I felt my car start to slid like it was on ice even though the pavement was dry. My abs light and my service 4wd light came on. I had a very hard time getting home because the brakes were failing. I came home googled it and realized that it was my tone ring and that it was a common problem. Sure enough next day took it to a Ford dealership and that's what it was. The problem dates back to 2000 Ford Escapes and as recent as 2010 Ford Escapes. The mechanic at the dealership advised me that the ring could snap just from turning a corner. I don't know why Ford isn't being required to fix this issue. Why are the being allowed to put this same product in the vehicle year after year knowing its inferior. When the ring breaks it makes it very hard to stop the car which is a huge safety hazard.

Sudden failure of abs system. Abs light not operating on dashboard indicator panel.

57 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2002 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/14/2010

In December 2010 took my Ford Escape into my service center to have the brakes looked at when the abs light came on and the brake pressure felt sluggish. They found and replaced a bad tone ring on the left front axle. Now six months later June 2011 the abs light comes on again with the brake pedal pulsating at times. I took it back to the service center again and they had to do the same thing on the right side front. I feel that this is a safety issue. If someone would stop short in front of me or cut me off and I would have to slam on my brakes, I feel that someone could be seriously hurt. I feel that Ford should recall the 2002 Escape for this reason.

60 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2007 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 08/13/2010

I have a 2007 Ford Escape. I took it to the car was and my abs lights and 4wd lights came on. I looked online and found several complaints of tone rings (abs rings) being cracked. Sure enough my front left tone ring is cracked. I believe it happen on the conveyor at the car was. Still this is a common problem, even Ford dealers (two of them) agree. Why isn't this a recall? Ford is fixing it for $300.

61 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2007 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 02/15/2010

For the second time in the last month I needed to bring my Ford Escape in to the service department. This time it was because my abs light came on and my 4wd drive light started flashing. The vehicle was running fine and was not making any sounds. This time the "abs sensing ring" had gone bad. I only have 22150 miles on the vehicle, drive moderate amounts, and make sure I go in for all my service visits. Thankfully this too was covered by warranty, but it is really becoming a hassle to visit the dealership so frequently. Additionally I had to have my brake pads replaced this visit.

62 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2002 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 02/04/2010

2002 Ford Escape parked in driveway. Last driven 5 hours earlier. The alarm sounded alerting my husband inside. He looked out of the window and saw smoke rolling from under the hood of the vehicle. He ran out with fire extinguisher and put out the flames. Hopefully, this immediate detection of the fire limited the amount of damage. We were more fortunate than several other complaints. The abs module appears to be where damage was sustained. This is a recall for several 2002 Escapes beginning in 2007, but when checking online with Ford, my VIN number states that there are no recalls on this particular vehicle. I didn't receive a recall notice from Ford, and have on other occasions for this vehicle. I investigated several complaints previously filed involving 2002 Escapes, and they are hauntingly the same scenario. Also, the VIN numbers on several of these are very similar to mine. Obviously, they have missed several of these dangerous components, or the website is incorrect. I was unable to phone Ford, as it is a weekend and will first thing Monday morning. My ecu on this vehicle was replaced and programmed at a Ford dealership in cottage grove, or in November of 2009. It was returned to me with the abs light still illuminated. The dealer made no mention to the light and I wrongly assumed that it wasn't a problem. I believe Ford must correct this situation financially and make sure that all 2002 Escapes are included in the recall. Many complaints I viewed were recent, so I conclude that the dangerous situation is not remedied.

65 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2007 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 10/25/2009

I started my car in the morning, and drove up my street as I normally do on dry, clear pavement, hitting no bumps or potholes. As I got to the stop sign and pressed my brake pedal, the abs light came on and my 4wd light began flashing. The brakes made a grinding sound, and the brakes locked up. I now know this as the abs system activating. This has been happening for 2 days now, every time I hit the brakes in my Ford Escape. I have been told that it is a cracked tone ring by my local Ford dealer and that it is a minimum of $400. 00 to fix. I do not have that kind of money. I have been looking online about this problem and I am amazed at how many other people have the same issue! and with low mileage and through no fault of their own. I am at 52,000 on my 2007 Ford Escape (with this being 90% highway miles) this is a serious safety issue and I am appalled that there has not been a recall on this yet!!!! please help us in allowing a recall for all the people who have been effected by this. I am a single mother and I have no idea how im going to afford to have this fixed. : ( thank you for any help you may be able to provide to me and my boys!.

66 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2001 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 08/07/2009

The abs warning light came on in my 2001 Ford Escape. I took it to the Ford service department. They ran some tests. They said the abs module was probably the cause but they did not have one in stock. They would order it and contact me to schedule installation. They did not indicate the vehicle was unsafe to operate. I drove the car back home and to work the next day. On the way home after work a fire started in the engine compartment left front side which is near the brake system components. I put the fire out and contacted my insurance company. The vehicle was no longer drivable. I had it towed to the Ford dealer the next day. Neither Ford or farmers insurance could pinpoint the origin of the fire but their was damage around the abs and its wiring. Ford has denied responsibility for the damage. I remembered a safety recall was done previously having to do with the abs. I rechecked and discovered that similar fires were the reason for the recall. Ford said they did perform the recall on my vehicle. I checked further on line and saw that a safety investigation was opened because the remedy by Ford has not eliminated vehicle abs wiring fires. I believe my Ford Escape is another case of this safety defect and Ford should take responsibility for the damage and related expenses I have incurred.

67 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2006 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 01/01/2009

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph, she heard a loud noise coming from the vehicle followed by the illumination of the abs warning light. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they advised that the o-rings failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The failure recurred twice within a week. The manufacturer was contacted and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was unknown. The current mileage was approximately 84,500.

68 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2006 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 09/01/2008

The 05-06 Ford Escapes have a major failure in their braking and axle system. I bought a new Escape in 2006 in less then two years the abs light came after replacing the front brake pads. I took the car to a mechanic and he stated that the front axle has "teeth" on it that easily break off and therefore disengaging the abs system. On a daily basis the breaks "thump" like they are not able to stop the vehicle, this happens at any speed, even while trying to pull into a parking spot. This has not caused any accidents but we never know if the brakes are going to work they are suppose to. My vehicle was past its warranty when this problem first occurred, and now I have to pay for the replacement of the entire front axle because a engineering malfunction. The mechanic stated that Ford is aware of the problem but they refuse to place a recall on the parts. I inquired about fixing the problem, he stated that the parts, which again is the entire front axle, is on back order for around 5 months and the cost is around $1500. 00. I have also talked to several people who own Ford Escapes and they have the same issue. If Ford is aware of the problem and they know there is a problem because of the lack of front axles why hasn't this constituted a recall or at least a safety investigation.

69 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2002 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 03/28/2008

I went out to crank my vehicle and it ran wide open. I turned it off and tried it twice more with the same results. The security officer at my workplace came over and raised the hood to see what was going on. Twice more I cranked it with the same results. Then he found the problem my speed control cable was no longer connected. He got it back on and advised me to go to my dealer. The following day they had me bring it in, they informed me that my particular vehicle was not on the recall list. They were going to order the part, and when I asked the chances of it happening again, they replaced the regular speed cable and disconnected the cruise control one until they could get one in, just in case. I didn't get to see any list, I just know there was a recall on my type of vehicle for this. Am I to just take their word for it? I thank the lord that I was sitting in a parking lot when it happened and not out on the road where it could have been a very bad situation. Also when they said I was ready they asked how long my abs light had been blinking--I told them it was blinking the day I test drove and the salesman was going to ask about it when we got back to the dealer. I never got an answer. If either of these are faulty and were never reported I'd like to know. Other people may experiencing the same thing. And if these cables have been replaced before and it's happened again, people need to know. I thank you for your help.
