The instrument cluster started by flashing all lights to staying on. Then the speed controls, speedometer, rpm gauge, and heat sensor would not work. On top of all this. The brakes began to make a clicking noise when this issue would happen and the brakes would act rough. No mechanic could figure out the problem until it was to late. This needs to be better known and better managed.

On 1/9/20 the car had its last dangerous malfunction of so many sense I purchased the vehicle from a dealership 10/18. The car was parked in a beach parking lot. As my son was getting ready to leave the parking lot he turned car on put car in drive slightly stepped on gas to begin pulling out and the car surged and accelerated full speed by itself. He lost all steering and had no breaks. He had absolutely no control of the vehicle. It went full speed into a parked car about 15 ft away! both cars were totaled. All 3 people involved were injured. There was 2 people in parked car and my son who was burrowing my car. Previous to this accident the Escape has had so many dangerous malfunctions. Some being total steering loss while I was driving 45mph . Car was towed and fixed covered by factory recall. Another shock snapped and punctured my fuel tank. My mechanic said I dodged death by driving . He said car was a ticking bomb. Ive replaced 2 abs sensors at different times because they failed and caused break pedel to vibrate and made it very hard to stop. Another wheel bearing and wheel compartment due to total rust and corrosion of under body. All these things happened in only a little over a year sense purchasing this vehicle from mid cape moters for 6000$ in October.

Tl- the contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape. The contact stated that there was a loss of eps which had caused the contact to have to maneuver the steering wheel with extreme difficulty. The eps warning light flashed when the failure happened. An independent repair facility mechanic checked the dtc which had showed that the steering shaft torque sensor needed to be replaced and reprogram the abs control module. The dealer dick masheter Ford, 1090 s hamilton rd, columbus, OH 43227, (614) 861-7150 and the manufacturer indicated that the vehicle had received a software update in 2014 for NHTSA campaign number: 14v284000 (steering) however, the remedy failed to provide a permanent fix. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA action number: dp15001 (steering) but the failure was related. The manufacturer provided no assistance other than the dealer replacing the part. The approximate failure mileage was 139,000. Dyd.
Both left and right rear brake sensors (abs) went out within 2 months of each other, after only 58,000 miles.

Tl the contact owns a 2011 Ford Escape. While the contact's son was driving approximately 35 mph, the steering wheel seized and the abs and stability warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was driven home. The following day, the vehicle was taken to andy shaw Ford (1231 e main st, sylva, nc 28779, (828) 586-0900) where it was diagnosed that the steering sensor and column needed replacement. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 41,349.
The contact owns a 2009 Ford Escape. While driving, the vehicle experienced a loss of power steering. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the power steering sensor and steering column had to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the onboard diagnostic warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle experienced a loss of power. The dealer stated that the mass air index was defective and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. In addition, the maintenance warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle experienced a loss of power. The vehicle was repaired, but the abs, low tire pressure, traction control, and parking warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed or repaired again. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The failure mileage was 169,000.

The contact owns a 2002 Ford Escape. The vehicle was repaired under NHTSA campaign number: 12v005000 (service brakes, hydraulic). While the vehicle was stopped at a red light, the brake pedal was depressed to the floor and the contact had to use the emergency brake to stop the vehicle. While driving my front wheel drive Ford Escape on a trip the abs and stability control lights both came on. This did not initially cause any problems with normal braking while driving in dry conditions. At the end of the trip the abs system activated on every stop, significantly reducing stopping distance on dry ground. My investigation found the following: rusting of the driveshaft surface apparently caused outward pressure on the inside of the front right abs tone ring resulting in it separating in one spot. This probably created a error in the monitoring by that abs sensor resulting in the lights coming on. The ring may have held fast to the rust under the remainder of the ring during most of my trip causing no other problems. Near the end of my trip the cracked ring appears to have shaken free, slipping on the rotating driveshaft surface. This may have made the sensor think the wheel was not turning and applied the abs to that wheel each time the brakes were applied. The danger then became increased stopping distance on dry ground and unknown performance on slippery surfaces. In checking around, this appears to be a common problem and the other ring will crack eventually due to similar rusting. Repairing this requires the ring to be replaced and possibly the driveshaft section it is mounted on.

2004 Ford Escape - a b s rings on axel cracked and allowed them to move . Result in brake failing -have to let off the brake so it can grab again and a sensor make it pulse the brakes. Using gasket repair to hold the rings in place. . . Both sides have this problem. We know of three Escapes different years that have now the same problem.

The abs sensor rings on my front brakes keep getting cracks in them. This is disabling the abs on my vehicle. I get it fixed and then a year and 2 months later it cracks again.
Brakes and steering failed once while driving down a curvy mountain road, speed approx. 25 mph, second failure at approx 45 mph on a straight and level city road. Both times two feet had to be used on the brake pedal and with heavy steering and the vehicle was just stopped before crashing into obstacles. No warning preceeded the incidents. Three dash warning lights came on after. The dealer took the vehicle back to the dealership both times and the first time said perhaps we had more than one key on the key ring in the ignition key hole. This was noted as a potential cause of turning off the engine. This was not the case in either incident, only the ignition key was on the ring. First incident they said Ford noted the heavy key posibility and Ford engineering also recommended reprogramming the computer and a new mass air flow sensor was installed. This did not help as a few days later the same failure occurred again, almost resulting in a crash. Currently (Feb. 23, 2002) the Escape is at the dealer now after the second near crash incident as we will not drive it anymore. They say they are asking their engineering staff again what to do. This is the same source that originally said to tell us we probably had too many keys hanging from the ignition key. None has any firm answer and sources on the internet confirm this problem and Ford has no solution at this time. We would like to terminate the purchase which was done about a month ago as the vehicle is not save to drive. Both my wife, first incident, and daughter, second incident will not drive the vehicle they were so frightened and barely were able to avoid crashes. Date Feb. 23, 2002 signed eugene lally.
