Ford Escape owners have reported 1,782 problems related to other fuel system (under the other fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Ford Escape based on all problems reported for the Escape.
Ford should act quicker than they are doing. The said vehicle could catch on fire anytime and Ford does not see an emergency here to get parts and take care of problem, they will wait until a life has been taken or someone is badly burned. We are talking of a fire risk here, like the Ford pinto which could catch on fire anytime possible if hit on the back of car. This could be the same problem that Ford needs to address.

My 2019 Ford Escape engine has recently taken a big decline due to coolant leaking into the cylinders of the car. I was told this is a common occurrence with 2019 Escapes, so why has it not been situated? it is unsafe and over all inconvenient for the ones who are with out a car now. My car decided in the middle of traveling that it was no longer going to move no matter how hard the gas was pushed, unsafe. The engine is now loud, shaky, and over heats, while idling and driving. I have had this car for a year and a half and every time the check engine light came on and I took it to be diagnosed I was met with another issue that I paid to fix, and still no place fixed the engine. It was not until the car is no longer drivable that I finally got an answer on what has happened to my engine. This car was regularly maintained. My vehicle was inspected by a Ford specialist who said this problem caused my car to now be valued at $500. If this is a known problem with this car why are they still being sold on the market?.

It has a recall 25s76 that Ford says has no solution. I called Ford, and they said it did have one, and that I should take it in. Supposedly, what they did was a software update on 05/01/2025, but nothing worked. The gasoline smell inside the car persists, with a risk of fire.

While driving at a constant speed on the highway, the transmission shifted down a gear and revved into very high rpms. I was dramatically slowing down despite pressing on the gas pedal. The car didn't provide any power and just revved while I had cars next to me going at highway speeds. Managed to get off the highway, a transmission fault indicator popped up on the dash. The car no longer was able to move. I had the car towed to the Ford dealership. This car has a bad transmission at ~97,000 miles. Prior to this, I felt like the car's transmission maybe wasn't shifting on time but didn't make much of it. This could have easily resulted in a crash. Turns out this is a very well known problem with the Ford Escape. My friend has a 2016 Ford Escape who recently paid 8000$ for a new transmission. This is clearly unsafe and the failure is definitely premature.

Engine light is now on and when I fill my car up with gas it has a stall and takes 3-4 times to turn on. My safety is at risk if this recall is not repaired and my car catches fire. Started a month ago and it's challenging to schedule with Ford.

The suspected malfunctioning component is the fuel injector(s), part of the fuel system(gasoline). The vehicle is currently in my possession and is available for inspection upon request. An independent mechanic believes the issue is injector-related and consistent with a known injector defect. The vehicle is subject to a fuel injector recall that wards of fuel accumulation on top of the engine, creating a risk of under-hood fire. In addition the vehicle experiences intermittent stall-on-start and engine shaking/misfiring during startup, which could leave the vehicle inoperable or unreliable, particularly in traffic or emergency situations. Yes. An independent mechanic has evaluated the vehicle and believes the symptoms are consistent with a fuel injector failure or fuel pressure bleed-down. The issue is intermittent and does not always reproduce on demand, which has made consistent replication difficult. The vehicle has not yet been physically inspected by the manufacturer. However, Ford motor company has an open case on this vehicle, and the VIN is listed under an injector-related recall/customer satisfaction program. No police or insurance inspections have occurred. No warning lights or messages have appeared. Symptoms include delayed starting, engine shaking/misfiring during startup, and stalling on the first start attempt, followed by normal starting on a second attempt. These symptoms began intermittently and have become more noticeable over time.
While driving and idling, strong exhaust fumes enter the cabin, especially when the vehicle is in park or stopped at a traffic light. Air recirculation shuts off by itself and the airflow is very weak even on high settings. Remote start caused the cabin to fill with fumes before entering the vehicle, leading to headache and difficulty breathing within minutes. Symptoms are consistent with carbon monoxide exposure. Cabin and engine air filter is brand new. Just replaced 12/13/2025. Fumes are significantly worse at idle, suggesting an exhaust manifold crack or turbo exhaust leak. This is a serious safety hazard, and I am concerned about carbon monoxide poisoning and risk of losing consciousness while driving. It was so bad I had to have all windows open and the heat off in 30 or below temperature just to breathe. I have a very small child with heart problems and I'm concerned my vehicle is no longer safe to drive.
A car started jerking erratically. I put it in, drive or reverse. And the light on the transmission selector would just blink on and off and it would not go in gear when it did finally go in gear. It would not shift out of fourth gear. We'll erratic transmission would not shift cars behind me had to hit their brakes. Because my vehicle would not move very dangerous. I took the vehicle in the Ford. They said it needs a transmission. I've got 65000 miles on this vehicle. It's 5000 miles past a warranty. Warning light did come on. My vehicle is now at an independent transmission shop and they say, I need a new transmission. I don't have the money to fix this. And Ford is wrong if we're not correcting it I will have the documents today. We're Ford, it would only give me a small $7000 trade in allowance. Because it needed a transmission. I will be receiving the paperwork from Ford and the paperwork from the transmission shop that has my vehicle. Thank you.
There’s an open recall for the fuel injectors for my vehicle. I am currently unable to drive my vehicle because I can not fuel my vehicle. Each time it is fuel the engine light comes on and the vehicle either doesn’t drive or shakes violently and refuses to go. The vehicle isn’t able to pass state inspection as well. My safety is impacted by the vehicle randomly not going/stalling and not able to keep fueled.
Cabin fills with gasoline fumes when on. Took it to local dealership to have manufacturer recall number25s76, NHTSA recall number25v467 repaired. Dealership can reproduce the issue of gasoline fumes filling the cabin, but says they can't repair the vehicle until parts become available. I contacted Ford headquarters in dearborn, michigan. Ford headquarters tell me the parts aren't yet available for the recall and they will not be able to assist. The case number for my call with Ford headquarters is cxh06494307. The safety of myself and my children is at risk because liquid fuel and or fuel vapor that accumulates near a hot surface, such as hot engine or exhaust components may ignite resulting in an under-hood fire, increasing the risk of injury according to the recall. Please help.
I’ve always had electrical problems and now when I try to drive it, it smells like it’s going to catch on fire. And I’ve had to fix something within the fuel system 3 times.

There is no low fuel light on the dash. I just found this out because it is the first time I ran the gas that low. Brakes- when braking the transmission jumps. It makes the car hop. These are both safety concerns because you won’t know you have low fuel unless you shut the car off and turn it back on. With the brakes, no component should be making a car jump when you hit the brakes.

Upon exiting a shopping center parking lot, I turned right onto a street which led up to a 1-lane construction site. I was travelling approximately 15 miles per hour, and drove approximately 50 feet when the car suddenly stalled. No fuel response to gas pedal. It still had momentum, and I was able to steer into a safe side spot. I sat there stunned. The car was still in drive gear. I put it into park and turned the car off. After another 1 or 2 minutes, I turned the car on again, and was able to drive it home another 2 miles. I did not have to drive through the construction zone. Had I been in the one lane construction, I could have been rear-ended because a stopped car would not have been expected by drivers behind me. It could have caused severe injury or even death to myself and/or driver coming behind me. This happened on Monday, Nov. 24, 2025, at about 2:30 pm. Btw, this is a hybrid vehicle. That option was not given when starting this account.
My 2023 Ford Escape plug-in hybrid has experienced repeated high-voltage battery safety issues and prolonged loss of intended function. In February 2025, Ford notified me under recall 24s79 that I must immediately stop charging the vehicle due to the risk of internal battery cell short, potential battery thermal venting, and fire. That “do not charge” instruction lasted approximately six months, eliminating the core plug-in hybrid functionality of the vehicle. Ford originally stated the remedy would be available in q2 2025, but the repair was not completed until late August 2025. The recall documentation stated that an internal battery cell short could cause the “stop safely now” warning and sudden loss of motive power, which presents a serious safety risk while driving, especially when transporting my family. During the “do not charge” period the vehicle’s plug-in hybrid capability was unusable, and Ford acknowledged the risk of fire and loss of power. In November 2025, I received a new high-voltage battery recall 25sc4 (NHTSA 25v789) for the same general hazard category (internal short, potential fire, loss of motive power). The new recall states that no remedy is available at this time. This means the vehicle is again subject to a serious unresolved safety defect involving the same critical system. The repeated battery failures and the absence of a current fix create an ongoing safety concern, and the vehicle cannot be reliably used or sold during this open recall with no remedy. I am requesting NHTSA review the repeated hv battery defects, extended loss of plug-in hybrid functionality, delayed first recall remedy, and the current “no remedy available” condition, and assess whether further investigation or corrective action is needed for these vehicles.

Summary of problem: following the mandatory software update for NHTSA recall 22v859 (Ford 22s73) on my 2020 Ford Escape 1. 5l, the vehicle experienced a catastrophic electrical failure. The vehicle is now subject to the expanded NHTSA recall 25v467 (Ford 25s76) with a status of 'remedy not available'. Safety failures: continuous overcharging: a multimeter test confirms the alternator is overcharging at 15. 5v or higher, posing a severe risk of battery explosion or vehicle fire. Safety system collapse: the overvoltage has forced multiple safety modules into 'fail-safe' mode, disabling the anti-lock braking system (abs), traction control, and awd powertrain. Network communication failure: diagnostic reports confirm a u3000 critical control module fault and 'lost communication' with the battery energy control module, indicating a software-induced network collapse. Undriveable status: the vehicle has been unusable for over 30 days and cannot pass NY state inspection due to persistent evap and module communication codes triggered by the recall update. Dealer negligence: [xxx] (dealer #xxx) confirmed that all physical communication lines are functional but refused a free recall-related diagnosis, demanding a $600 fee instead of honoring the federal safety recall mandate. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Recall has been issued since 7/16/25 and a serious safety risk issue has not been resolve. It is mentally draining and scary that whenever we drive our car there is always a risk of safety like car catching on fire. We have been patiently waiting for a long time now. Consumer safety should always be a priority specially we have 2 kids inside the car.
Coolant intrusion into cylinders at 81,000 miles has damaged engine and transmission pump, requiring replacement of both. Appears this is a known issue with both 2. 0l and 1. 5l engines.
Nhtsa recall 25v467 was issued in July 2025. It has been over 3 months of constant fear for under-hood fire from possible fuel injector crack. My family's safety has been at risk long enough, this needs a permanent fix please!.
My vehicle stalls while driving or after pumping fuel and I frequently have to "fart" it is the only thing I can describe it as. The opening to the fuel tank will start vibrating and making noises. If I do not pull over, the minute I let off the gas, it stalls out. In addition, when I pump gas, it takes 4-5 times to start it. It dies 3 or 4 times before it will turn over and I have to press the gas pedal and take off as soon as it starts so it doesn't die. I have been able to get it to stay running, but barely, when adding a small amount of fuel. It chugs and rpms go up while I'm pumping like it's about to die. If I put more than 10 dollars in, it dies while fueling and I get stranded. It's getting worse. I'm listing the date as today, but this started in 2023 or so and I bought the vehicle in 2017.
Catalyst converter just brock while driving. The muffler shop repair said that a lot of other car owner have the same problem, even the dealer salesperson tolls me that they can't keep up with part in stock.
Coolant leak into the engine causing engine failure. This is a known problem with the 1. 5 turbo engine in this model vehicle. Automobile is now undriveable and entire engine must be replaced.

Code for camshaft timing and cylinder 2 misfire. Scoped coils and performed relative compression test. Dead cylinder on number 2. Recommend manual compression test and cylinder leak down test to identify cause of low compression performed manual compression test and confirmed cylinder has 0 compression. Performed cylinder leak down test. Air coming from crankcase. This indicates an issue with rings, cylinder wall, or piston. Engine will need to be replaced. The coolant leaked into the cylinders, which lead to engine failure.
Cel is on -- hard time getting vehicle to start up after getting gas - once is running has a "shake to it" for a few seconds then stables would this be a potential cover? March 30, 2018 NHTSA campaign number: 10137114 component: fuel system, gasoline NHTSA id number: 10137114 manufacturer communication number: ssm 47203 components: fuel system, gasoline.
Coolant loss with no visible external leak, a sweet smell from the exhaust, and bubbling or gurgling in the coolant reservoir after startup. There is a known issue ongoing regarding customer satisfaction program 21n12.
My fuel lid will not close causing a check engine light. My vehicle has less than 25k miles but outside of the 3 year limit for the warranty.
My Ford Escape 2017 at 77,000 was diagnosed with coolant intrusion, causing catastrophic damage to the engine & requiring a total engine rebuild. This is a known issue identified by Ford in csp 21n12 by Ford and tb 22-2134, but Ford has refused to subsidize any repairs because the car warranty is over 7 years old (it is currently an 8. 5 year-old car). This issue can cause overheating, engine failure, and fires & has been known by Ford since at least June 2022, but they failed to notify me via mail or otherwise & have refused all requests to grant an extension or partial coverage for the necessary engine repairs.
There is oil leak that cannot be found. I have taken that truck to 3 different mechanics, conducted 3 different diagnostics using the dye and everything and the source of this leak cannot be found and is causing me problems.

Ford design flaw in 1. 5 ecoboost engine in a 2018 Escape with 91k miles causing water intrusion into cylinder which causes engine to run dangerously bad. Ford knew of design flaw but neglected issue recall but did issue csp 21n12 Ford will not assist because of ending program in late 2022.
While driving the car- the front end started to shake and the check engine light came on. Took it to our local Ford dealership and the advised that it was a cylinder 2 misfire when they diagnosed. They advised that the engine block is porous and the coolant slowly leaks into the engine which is causing the misfire. Called Ford's customer assistance line and since the car is out of warranty- and there are no open recalls, that they will not cover the $9100. 00 new engine repair. Our car is a 2017 Ford Escape titanium- with approx 82k miles. We purchased the car as a certified pre-owned in 2021- and have had no prior issues. We did not purchase any extended warranty. We were advised that the car isn't safe to drive due to the engine misfire.
Powertrain control module failure causing vehicle to lose power and engine to run at 5 to 6 rpms. And transmission not shifting properly. Vehicle is going into limp mode and will also shut down while driving but the engine stays running and the cruise does not shut off. There is not remedy for the recall that I believe is causing these issues. This has been going on for 6 month. This vehicle has been nothing but a problem.
I am writing to formally demand immediate action regarding my 2022 Ford Escape, VIN [xxx] a 0% financing plan and Ford’s new vehicle limited warranty. Since purchase, the Escape has suffered serious safety defects, including gasoline fumes inside the cabin, burning odors, and repeated performance failures tied to the fuel system. On [xxx] and again on [xxx], the vehicle flamed up while being driven, requiring emergency intervention to extinguish. In August 2025, Ford issued safety recall 25s76, admitting that these vehicles may suffer fuel injector cracking, fuel leaks, and under-hood fires while being driven. Ford further admitted that no permanent repair remedy exists. The interim software update provided does not correct the defect. As a retired u. S. Army combat medic and purple heart recipient, I live with ptsd triggered by vehicle fires and explosions. The Escape’s condition has placed me in a state of medical crisis, making it impossible for me to safely operate the vehicle. Ford has discontinued the line. I want a replacement car or I want to be compensated for the risk of loss of life if I drive the car. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. My car togs a lot. My tire sensors keep going out. I've smelt gas before while driving. It's very slow going up hill. I hear grinding sounds intermittently.
My car hesitates when driving forward from a stop and the rpm's jump up and down. It almost stalls when going up a steep hill. I have to leave it running when filling it up or it is very hard to start and sometimes will stall after starting. Check engine light is on and tire sensor light is on. The sound system doesn't work. Have read online about a lot of people having the same problems with their car.
Vehicle has active alerts for powertrain control module, and low boost pressure with the turbocharge along with emissions codes p0299, p0496 and p0456. The vehicle is constantly going into deep sleep mode. While driving the vehicle started to enter safe mode. And displayed an alert that said please turn ignition on. The dash and screen went black like vehicle was off but it was still running. This happened multiple times. My vehicle also will not start after pumping gas so I have to leave vehicle running every time I pump gas. My vehicle will not pass NY state inspection because of the recalls.
