Failure Date: 03/28/2021

3/28/2021 mileage 138141, 1 day after filling tank noticed strong order of gasoline coming from under car and gasoline leaking out of top of tank while parked in driveway. Tracked source of leak to a 1 inch crack in top of tank about 2 inches forward and to the left of the fuel pump where the tank height changes and gets taller, appears to be stress crack. No check engine light or codes present. This year is equipped with a steel tank not plastic. Replacement tank discontinued by Ford, sourced aftermarket replacement.

2 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2017 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 03/25/2021

After filling my gas tank and stopping fueling when the gas pump stops, the car begins to act like it is going to stall when I start driving. The rpms will drop down from 1250 to around 300-400 and shoot back up. This will only last for about a mile or two of driving and go away. It is happening consistently and other internet users appear to have issues with completely stalling. It appears to be caused by a faulty "vapor canister purge valve. ".

4 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2012 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 07/13/2019

After having the recall 16s41 fuel delivery module flange replacement service, my vehicle would occasionally not successfully start but would continue to try. I called the dealership where it was serviced and they took a look, but found nothing. Less than two months have passed and I notice new issues; vehicle chugs down the highway almost boggy-like; when filling with gasoline the pump stops at 3/4 tank and not full; spits gasoline back out; overall sounds significantly different running.

5 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2012 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 06/05/2019

On approximately may 25, 2019, I was at a local gas station to fill up my vehicle, a 2012 Ford Escape XLT, with gas. While filling the gas tank to full, the automatic shut off failed causing gas to forcefully splash back out of the gas tank, onto me and the ground next to the gas pump. The attendant at the gas station followed their protocol for a gas spill. I filled up the gas take at other local gas stations and the problem continued. On June 5, 2019 I scheduled a repair at my local Ford dealership. I paid for a faulty vent valve and a solenoid asy to be replaced for $ 463. 08. They stated on my receipt that they added 6 gallons of gas to confirm the repair. A week later I refueled my vehicle in another city, and the problem with the gas overflowing continued. I took the vehicle back to the Ford dealership July 5, 2019, and explained the problem was not resolved. They told me they dropped the gas tank and tested the components and told me it was a faulty valve. They informed me "they talked to detroit" and I would need to replace the "gas tank assembly" and I would be given a "discount" on the repair since I had paid almost $500 for the first repair. The estimate for the second repair was $1,000. I asked of there was a warranty on the repair that was done previously, and was told no. I did not get the repair done this time because the problem was supposed to be corrected and wasn't. There apparently is not warranty on the repair that was done. I am shocked that it will cost an estimated $1,000 more to repair a problem that they said was fixed, and possibly no guarantee on the repairs. After contacting the Ford motor company in michigan, I was told the individual dealerships are in charge of their customer service and that Ford corporate couldn't help with my problem. I contacted this agency and was given this case number-11234836.

6 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2013 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 04/06/2019

At every fill up the car stalls. Now I have to hold the gaz to a certain level to avoid stalling after every fill up. If I ever let the pump to automatically fill the tank and stop itself I get in a lot of troubles for day. The idéale is bad and the car stalls now in stead of filling my tank to 12 or 13 gallons I have to stop the pump at 10 or 11 gallons to avoid the inconvenience of having car idling hard and even stalling.

10 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2013 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 09/03/2017

Vehicle was going up hill at approximately 50 mph (temperature gauge normal) when, without warning, an alert stated the coolant level was low. Immediately after, a second warning came on saying that the engine was overheating and to pull off the road safely (no longer able to accelerate). The coolant level was low, but had been filled less than 3 months prior. There are no visible leaks or cracks in the coolant reservoir, tubes, etc. After waiting for 30 minutes, we proceeded to coast down the hill in neutral (after filling the coolant tank with water). We then bought coolant at a local store and proceeded to go back up the hill. The car gave us the same warnings (coolant low and engine overheating). We were unable to pull off to the side of the road. Thankfully a police officer was right behind us, so we did not get hit. He offered to use the battering ram on the front his car to push us to safety. However, the car was able to go the extra 5 feet when restarted, prior to it overheating and locking up again. After an additional 30 minutes we again went down the hill in neutral. At this point we decided to give the car a break and ate dinner at a local restaurant (approximately one hour). We then proceeded to drive home. About an hour into the trip (while going 65 mph on the highway the car again gave us the 2 alerts (low coolant and car overheating). We barley were able to get to the side of the highway safely. Coolant level normal. This is a serious issue and need to be addressed. I will be contacting Ford tomorrow to determine if our 2013 Ford Escape was included in the initial recall (and already had the work completed), as there are no open recalls on the vehicle at this time. I am hesitant to bring the car to a dealer as it appears many people have gotten the runaround and no clear solution has been identified. Ford needs to take responsibility for this issue.

11 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2011 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/01/2016

Since I purchased my vehicle (original owner) in February, 2005 I would smell gas fumes when I filled my tank with fuel. Started not filling tank all the way to avoid fuel odor in my vehicle. Received safety recall notice 6s41/NHTSA recall 16v-777 in December, 2016 for fuel delivery module. Contacted autonation Ford dealership in frisco, TX and was told part was not available. Contacted them again in April and then June, 2017. Was told, "part not available". I explained I smell a fuel odor in my vehicle & the recall letter from Ford states if your car exhibits symptoms of fuel odor then immediately contact dealership for a service appointment for diagnosis and repair relating to this safety recall. Was told, "part not available". Nothing dealership can do. I contacted Ford customer relations (866) 436-7332 on 6/16/17 and was given case # 12533821 by ralph. Once again contacted autonation in frisco & was told they do not have the part, therefore, nothing can be done. Called Ford customer relations again and then jennifer said, "nothing can be done at this time". Fuel odor is still there if I fill up my fuel tank. Very concernedi have a leak but have not noticed anything under my car on ground.

12 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/01/2013

About 3 years ago, we started having problems with the component within in the fuel take that shuts after you put gas in the vehicle. We kept getting an error notice that it was not shutting. We took it in to the Ford dealer, where they claimed to have fixed it. About 2 weeks later, we the code came up again. We took it back to the Ford dealer and this time, the neck of the fuel tank had to be replaced. This seemed to take care of the issue for some time, but within the last 6 months, we've been getting really bad gas mileage. We maintain our vehicle very well, so this was concerning. We put new tires, did a completed tune-up, etc. , but this didn't help. About 4 months ago, our check engine light came on & the code said there was a part that needed replacing; the vent valve. We did that, and then 2 weeks later, the check engine light came on again for the same thing. And then, as we're pumping gas, the gas keep shutting off, as if we are topping it off, when it's actually empty. We were having a hard time just filling up our tank. We finally took the vehicle in to our local repair shop (whom we trust). The vent valve that was replaced was full of fuel. They are having to replace the canister. We are hoping this will fix the problem. If not, they said we'll need to replace the fuel tank, which is currently on a national back order. But I checked my VIN# & was told my particular vehicle isn't part of that recall. I love my little Escape, but we've had problem after problem with the fuel system for some reason, for the last 4 years. It's very frustrating & Ford just shrugs their shoulders at us now.

13 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2005 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 10/23/2013

Several months ago I purchased this vehicle used. It had only about 70,000 miles on it. I am the second owner have filled it with gas several times and have noticed that we cannot keep the nozzle on full because the gas backs up in the filler tube and the fuel nozzle shuts-off. Sometimes we can't even put it on the automatic low. We must sit there and keep squeezing the nozzle until it shuts off, and then squeeze the handle again, and again, and again. I did some research and found a technical service bulletin (TSB) on this problem. The problem is that Ford incorrectly designed the filler tube. Apparently it is too narrow. So now they have a redesigned tube that is larger in diameter. But since this car is not under warranty, Ford won't fix it, and this ain't some easy inexpensive fix. . . It costs over $800 to do it. You got to drop the tank. The new correct part costs $300, and the labor is about $500. What you NHTSA folks don't seem to realize is that is potentially serious problem that could allow consumers to be splashed with gasoline if the fuel nozzle shut-off system fails, because fuel shut-off system fails all the time. I have personally witnessed this several times. . . With gas overflowing other peoples cars. This is why people must remain at the car while filling it. . . These automatic nozzles fail all the time. This fuel filling system issue is a potentially serious safety problem, consumers must not be required to rely on other safety systems, because those systems will fail. Ford designed a defective fuel filler system, and NHTSA must make Ford fix them, at Ford's expense' if NHTSA is unwilling to protect the public from unreasonable risk. . . Then what good are they? anything that potentially involves consumers getting splashed with gasoline is a serious safety hazard period.

14 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2013 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 08/01/2013

Filling vehicle up with gas pump on automatic. After gas pump clicked off, removed nozzle from vehicle and gas shot out of gas tank filler neck all over me. Happened twice at 2 different gas stations.

15 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2002 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 07/28/2011

Metal straps holding up the gas tank rusted and broke on July 28, 2011 while filling the gas tank. Had to have it towed to dealership where they replaced the two metal straps on August 1, 2011. On August 2, 2011 a recall was issued for the same problem on similar Ford vehicles that were manufactured during the same year. Dealership confirmed it was the same problem that was cited in the recall and stated that I was very lucky that I was not driving the vehicle at the time this occurred.
