7 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 1999 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 05/04/2015

After picking up my laundry, I headed to staples while driving 45 mph I heard a loud boom and very strong smell of gas so I pulled over turned off truck. I started again and it was a loud popping sound. I got home checked truck engine. I noticed my coil pack out and spark plug attached to it. I tried to put spark plug but the threads were all striped. I checked the inside of cylinder head could not see tried to put in a new spark plug but I can turn and turn and the spark plug would not screw in. This is dangerous because when spark plug blows out you have all the odor of gas coming out and that one spark can cause engine to blow up. I contacted Ford all they took was my VIN number and name never heard from them again.

8 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 1999 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 05/04/2015

After picking up laundry, on my way to staples all of the sudden I heard a loud pop, then a strong smell of gas. I pulled over, turned off truck. Turned it back on then heard a loud popping sound. Got the truck home opened the hood and noticed spark plug out of engine attached to a damaged coil. I tried to put in new spark plug but it would not screw in, the threads in cylinder head were stripped. Found out it would cost a lot of money to get cylinder head rethreaded. Wrote to Ford corporate they asked me for VIN name and basic info. I found out that this is common in triton engines. It is a designer flaw in Ford. Ford knew about it for years now. Spark plug blows out for no reason. After spark plug pops out a strong smell of gas comes out. This could cause engine to explode. This happens in Ford triton engines. This is unsafe.

10 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 1999 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 11/03/2014

My Expedition started acting like it was starving for fuel misfiring loss of power and there's a ticking sound coning from under the dash board the door lock unlock the lights flicker and horn beeps by its self I parked it and a couple days later it wouldnt it trying to crank but its sound I dont believe battery is dead if it was then lights wouldn't come on now and again also when I use my key ring lock to lock the door there's a clunk cluck sound I've spent a lot of money trying to find out what's wrong with lamont that's my Expeditions name and nobody knows last repair shop had it 9 days total on the 7th day I called them they said they had no idea and on the 9th I went in and they said I needed a new motor costing 2600 and charging me 220 to tell me that. The shop before that cost me 350 saying the truck itself were the plugs go in was stripped and they needed a special tool. Any how I believe it would be a matter of time before the vehicle will catch on fire. The vehicle is very unpredictable and you dont know what it will do next it also dies while driving it . .

11 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2003 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 06/20/2014

I was traveling at 70 mph on the interstate. The car popped, sputtered and died. Has steadily gotten more and more frequent. Engine dies at idle, dies at slow speeds as well as faster speeds. Very dangerous! have replaced the pcm, wiring harness, and fuel pump. Is not repaired. Power mirrors readjust themselves when the keyless entry is used. Several warning lights stay on, door ajar, check fuel cap, advatrac will not turn on. Rear window will not work. Back up sensor will not work. Interior lights as well as exterior lighting will not power off when car is turned off. You must manually turn them off or the battery drains. Cd player will not eject cd's loud popping sound in the front end and grinding sound when stopping. I have had this in the shop since June of 2014 and they cannot find the problem. Have already spent $1000 trying to repair. This vehicle is dangerous and can very likely cause an accident. It is not safe to drive. Ford auto shop wants to charge me $100 an hour to diagnose the problem then they are not sure if they can find the problem, they are telling me it could cost between $500-$1000 just to find the problem. I have checked several web sites and see that there are many, many people with the same problems with the same type of vehicle. This should be looked into before someone is injured or killed in an accident caused from the car stalling!!!.

14 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2000 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 02/23/2013

I was returning home from a family trip going the posted interstate speed limit of 65 mph when I heard a loud popping noise that sounded like a major leak had just occurred. When I pulled over to check out the problem I discovered the rear spark plug on the passenger side had ejected itself destroying the threads that hold it in the cylinder head and also destroying the heli coil pack that sits on top of the spark plug. I have never filed a complaint or safety report on any vehicle I have owned. This time the only reason I am filing a report is due to the frequency this problem seems to have on Ford triton motors. It seems excessive and upon very little investigating on my part I have found that every person I have talked to about it either owns a vehicle with the said motors in them and have experienced this problem on multiple occasions, or is someone who knows a person who has experienced this issue. I am a dedicated and loyal Ford owner and always will be, however I also believe that when a problem occurs with such frequency that they should be required to step up and make good on issues that clearly have been going on for well over a decade at this point in time.

15 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2001 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 12/01/2012

Tl-the contact owns a 2001 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that the vehicle made a popping noise while driving, jerked, and caused the vehicle to lose acceleration. The ignition coil was ripped from its bolt and the spark plug was ejected. The fire department was called to extinguish the flames. Thank goodness I was not driving it with my three kids or we could have been seriously injured. All across the u. S this is happening, does someone have to die before measures are taken?.

17 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2001 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 03/29/2012

After dropping off my children at daycare I stopped at the store. When I got back into my car and started it, it made a loud pop like something had came off. So I proceeded to turn the ignition on and then smoke came out of the top vents and the truck began making a loud popping noise and the engine was shaking. I was scared as hell and I thought the truck was about to blow up from the sound of it. So I calmed down and drove to the auto shop thankfully down the street. Well my spark plug had blew out the head and that's where the smoke was coming from. I had just replaced the #5 coil and plug with Ford on February 23, 2012 and that was $340. 61. I am barely making it financially and to read all of these problems with this truck and Ford not taking responsibility of the situation is disheartening. I am a single mother of three children and live in an area with no public transportation so I am now without a vehicle and no way to get to work and support my family, now what do I do? its amazing how this dealership can swoop you in and take your money and require you to make your payments on time but won't provide you with a safe vehicle. I now have to get a cab to pick my kids up from daycare because I can't drive my truck, not to mention when you get inside it smells like pure smoke which makes it scary to even wanna turn the thing on. Very frustrated and disappointed.

18 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 1999 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 06/25/2011

While moving accross country my 1999 Ford Expedition ejected the number 3 spark plug. This situation placed my family in harm's way as it occured on the interstate and was quite startling. The service rep was able to tell me what was wrong with my vehicle as soon as told him the make and model. The repair cost is significant, but the potential for an under hood fire caused by the fuel vapors being ignited by the ejected plug is of grave concern. Ford is keenly aware of the problem and has designed a replacement head for the vehicle, but refuses to do the honorable thing and replace it at their expense. They instead choose to profit from their customers by charging them for the repair or replacement of the cylinder heads. I find it predatorial that a car company would make a faulty product and then profit from the repair of said product. This could start a new precident by signaling to other car companies that if you sell a defective vehicle, you can make money on the backside by charging for the repair or replacement of that part. The safety concerns that are associated with this failure are related to the loud and sudden popping sound when the plug ejects, this could easily distract a driver and could potentially lead to a fatal accident. The fuel vapors could be ignited shortly after the plug ejects and could also cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle. Considering the Expedition carries up to 9 people the risk of a trafic fatality is increased greatly. Please hold Ford accountable for their error and lets hope no one gets hurt or killed until then.

21 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2001 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 02/26/2011

My vehicle suffered spark plug ejection. Upon pulling away from a stop light, the vehicle made a loud pop or bang and began to lose power immediately. Upon inspection, the coil-over-plug on the number 3 cylinder was broken from the bracket and a loud clanking noise came from the engine in that spot. After unsuccessfully trying to replace the coil, the spark plug came out of the socket without and force or tools. The spark plug came out with the coil. The area had to be rethreaded and repaired but was out of service for close to three months.

23 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2007 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 12/27/2010

The 5. 4l engine has a tapping noise coming from the top half of the motor on the passenger side. It occurs when the engine is idling at a stand still. It happens randomly. Have been speaking with Ford warranty and dealers trying to get fixed and because it is intermittant they do not want to work on. We have taken to 2 dealers a total of 3 times and spoken with Ford warranty and they refuse to pay to have the motor opened up and looked at.

24 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2003 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 04/13/2010

I own a 2003 5. 4l Ford Expedition ed bauer with 63,000 miles. My 2003 Ford Expedition very recently blew the #3 spark plug in may 2010. I purchased the Expedition in 2006 with only 14,000 miles. The spark plugs on the vehicle are the original spark plugs from the factory and have not been replaced. The Expedition started making a knocking sound. On may way home from work, as I tuned into the freeway entrance, the engine made a loud popping sound followed by a rattling soung. I continued to operate the vehicle for approximately 3 miles and then exit the freeway. There was also a smell of gasoline coming from the engine. Since I was not far from the Ford service center (galpin Ford in north hills, CA. ), I continued to operate the vehicle to the service center for repair. A day later I received a call from the service technician indicating that the #3 spark plug blew out of the head. The technician mentioned that the enginene needed a new head since they could not repair the problem. Total parts and labor. . . $3834. 00. After reading comments from this website, this is clearly a manufacturer defect that should not continue to be overlooked by Ford.

25 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 1997 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 04/02/2010

I have a 1997 Ford Expedition, my 15 year daughter and I was driving on 10 freeway going eastbound towards san beradino, when my check engine light started flashing a then I heard a loud pop under my hood as my truck started to lose power and make loud popping sounds. I was terrified cause this happen as I was going between 65 and 70 miles per hour on free way. Once I coasted safely to side of freeway and examined under my hood I see my spark plug wire laying to the side and spark plug laying on axle I was in disbelief until I tried to pick up spark plug and it was too hot, to hold in my hand yes this was my spark plug! it had been spit out of the engine. This is very dangerous once this happens your truck lose power and slows down tremendously, I had my truck towed to shop. I knew I would have a hard time explaining this to mechanic, because I'm a woman and mechanic was not going to believe me, but he stated that it was common in Ford trucks, the same thing happen to him and when he contacted dealer they did not acknowledge that there is an issue with they're spark plugs. My question is does some have to be killed before you guys do something it cost me $400 dollars to repair this and it could have cost me my life mechanic stated that it could happen again and maybe I should get rid of it as he sold his navigator after his incident. Would not feel right putting someone else thru this. As I research this issue I see I'm not the only one and this is not an isolated incident. This has happened enough times to enough people for Ford to be held accountable.

26 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2002 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 03/17/2010

March 17, 2010 I was stopped at a traffic light on leland and loveridge with my 4 small children in the vehicle. The light turned green, I stepped on the gas and heard a pop. Then a continous extremely loud popping noise. I turned into the arco and had the vehicle towed. The car was taken to rivera auto repair inc. On March 22, 2010. The #3 spark plugged had popped out. They had to do a sleeve and replaced the spark plugs along with the ignition coil on the plug. After my research, this is very common in the 2002 Expeditions because of a defect in the engine. At the time of incident, I had 81909 miles on the vehicle. I do have the old parts. It seems that Ford is aware of this problem but refuses to do anything about it. I am glad I was not on a freway. They must be waiting for someone to get killed from this defect. Here is a website with several complaints like mines, spark plugs popping out on their own. Including # 3 like mines. . Read more...

27 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2004 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 01/25/2010

A popping noise from the engine and the smell of gas while driving 25mph in town. I took it to the mechanic and he said it was a spark plug ejection from the engine & would cost $1200+ to repair.

28 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2003 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 01/06/2010

My 2003 Ford expediton was making a slight tapping noise all day as I drove around town. When I hit my home town I was a . 10 of a mile from my house and a huge banging noise occured. The vehicle lost power and I could smell gasoline vapors. From inspection under the hood I noticed the coil assembly above in the right rear cylinder was broken and the spark plug was laying on the motor. It had blown a spark plug. I had purchased an extended warranty when I purchased the vehicle. I had the car towed and was told they would inspect for repairs. The car was sub-letted out to a Ford dealer. The Ford dealer said that a helicoil repair was what was once accepted but their dealership no longer performed that procedure because it was only a temporary fix. Ford put out a service bulletin that said the best repair is to replace the head but a helicoil type repair would suffice. Because of this temporary fix announcement and Ford's inablilty to admit there is something wrong with the triton motor built between 1997 and 2008 my extendede warranty company will not make the best recommended fix. Ford needs to be held accoutable. I do not want to put my family of five at risk of breaking down and possible engine fire because of this defect.

31 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 1999 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 05/26/2008

Two weeks prior to this failure, there was a distinct ticking noise that changed with rpm. Sounded like a collapsed lifter. While returning home on memorial day 2008, experienced a loud popping noise, followed by continued whoosing noise and poor engine performance. After inspecting engine, noticed #7 spark plug had come out and broken the coil-on-plug coil unit. Failure occurred 2 blocks from my home, so I limped it home. Have not had it repaired yet.

32 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 1997 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 03/24/2008

While driving my 1997 Ford Expedition XLT 5. 4l v8 truck a spark plug blew out of the head of the engine. This is the second time that is happened, the first being in August, 2007. This same problem occurred on 2 different spark plugs. Each time, the plug blew out and the engine made a popping sounds like a badly tuned lawnmower. I was able to get to a dealer the second time, the first time I had to be towed. Throughout the time I had to drive the car this way, gas vapors were coming out of the cylinder at each turn of the piston. This sounds to be a common problem with the 5. 4l engines from Ford.
