3 Horn Assembly problem of the 1997 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 05/05/2017

When examining my vehicle which supposedly had a recall on the cruise control sensor on brake master cylinder, found that Ford only added a fusable link to prevent fire as the sensor may not have been leaking at the time. It has since leaked and the added bit of wire with the blue tag has blown it's fuses but I believe the cruise control has now disabled my horn durring operation. I am requesting my vehicle be serviced properly as the recall was not done correctly to my understanding. I was looking online and just realized this so I looked at my vehicle and saw it is the old design.

7 Horn Assembly problem of the 2000 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 12/04/2010

Multiple instances following rain vehicle turns over but will not start. Removing the key any of the following will occur- heater fan blower comes on and will only go off with the key in and in the on position. Lights may or may not come on. Radio may or may not come on. All this with key out, vehicle empty and closed. Sometimes blower will come on in empty vehicle. If the car starts sometimes the wipers will not work, the horn will not work, radio will not work, lights will not work or blinkers go on. Any or all of this may occur. Sometimes and oder like burning or sour gas will occur. If the rain quits and the vehicle sits for minutes to hours all these symptoms go away. I have pulled the lower kicker panel on the drivers side and found evidence of water below the gem near the edge of the carpet. I believe this to be the problem reported by many as the water entering from the windshield and shorting at the gem fuse connection. I am contacting the dealer, if they will not take care of it I will have a windshield replacement company try to reseal and examine for leaks. This appears to be potenially dangerous if engine would die while driving, light go out or wipers stop working.

8 Horn Assembly problem of the 2005 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 09/08/2008

My wife was driving our 2005 Ford Expedition with 50,000 miles. She stated that the radio quit working and then the vehicle quit running. At that point the horn began to blow continuously until smoke started to come out of the right side of the dash. At this time she exited the vehicle with our boys and called the fire dept. By the time they arrived the vehicle was fully involved with fire. Needless to say the Expedition is totaled from the fire. The entire interior is burnt up and melted. I have found similar complaints on several forums.

10 Horn Assembly problem of the 2001 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 01/18/2008

After rain or heavy fog we experienced many electrical issues on our 01 Expedition incl. Horn not working normal, front & rear wipers not working or coming on by themselves, door locks locking/unlocking while driving, interior & exterior lights not working, alarm system going off while SUV was being driven, fan blower on after SUV was turned off, radio working intermittently, etc. The latest occurred 1/16/08 after heavy rains the prior night. SUV wouldn't start in the morning and had to be jumped. It was driven that day with only issue being interior lights coming on themselves. On 1/17/08 SUV wouldn't turn over and again was jumped. There was clicking noise from engine compartment that seemed to be coming from kelsey hayes black box. We immediately took SUV to dealership and asked for tech to witness issue. Tech confirmed noise coming from the k-h abs module, said problem was probably due to windshield leak into fuse box & gem module which was sending current to abs module and also causing interior lights to turn on/off by themselves. On 1/18/08 dealership said tech did pressure test on windshield and it leaked and needed to be resealed. Fuse box and gem module would also need replaced. Since problems were caused by water leak Ford ext. Warranty won't cover repairs. I spoke to srv mgr,who said he would call zone mgr. And get back to me. I called Ford customer relations (crc) to document issues. Called dealership on 1/21/08 and srv. Mgr. Said zone mgr. Said nothing could be done to resolve situation and we were responsible for repairs. Due to ongoing electric issues with SUV we fear other safety features may malfunction compromising our safety. Ford issued ssm 15773 on 4/05/02 to dealerships addressing unusual electrical issues after rain or snow resulting from a windshield water leak. The ssm included actions to be taken in that situation. Our vehicle was back to dealership many times after release of ssm for electrical issues and ssm work was never done.

Contact states the car takes a long time to start, it's like the battery is dead. When vehicle was inspected the contact was told that the battery was good. When hitting the alarm the horn will sound very low, sometimes it will not make a sound at all. The automatic locks will not engage until the vehicle is already down the road. They suppose to engage when taking foot off the brakes. When starting the car the gauges will flash on/off, and then go back to normal. Also, when starting the vehicle the headlights will flash on as if the alarm has sounded, then , they will go off. The light that indicates if the car is in overdrive or regular drive no longer works. The contact received a recall letter last month regarding the scds. He reports having no problems with the cruise control. He believes the aforementioned problems are related to the defective scds. Failure Date: 02/01/2004

In spring of 2004 the owner of a 2000 Ford Expedition VIN. No. 1fmru1560yla84938. Upon opening the hood of the vehicle, the componets surrounding the cruise control componet and several other componets including the abs module were so hot that that the driver of the vehicle received minor burns disconnecting the ruptured part of the abs system. The vehicle had been idle and turned off for approximately one (1) hour when the event occurred. Upon the vehicle being started the next day, the horn would not work, the abs system light was illuminated and the cruise control would not engage. In April 2004, the cruise control switch was replaced. In late may, the cruise control switch was still inoperative after replacement. On June 14,2005 the complaints called Ford with the additional information that the vehicle was continuing to short out in various ways including placing the vehicle in the drive position and a new problem of the radio system would malfunction. When placed back in park, the radio was re-activate. Vehicle was examined by parker Ford and they advised the horn circuit had been overloaded and a fuse blown in the horn module. They also advised the abs module and pump were in need of replacement. The complainant believes this vehicle represents a continuing fire hazard and and that the damaged componet failures, all of which occurred at the same time were directly related to the defective cruise control switch. Complainant believes that additional vehicles may be at risk due to similar overloads on the electrical systems. Vehicle has never been wrecked, submerged in water or altered in anyway from the original factory design. Complainant has 24 years prior law enforcement experience. Vehicle history is also well known to current kentucky state trooper. Request NHTSA in depth review of potential for continuing problems and collateral failures of other componets associated with speed control switch.

20 Horn Assembly problem of the 1999 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 01/31/2001

1999 Ford Expedition experiencing problems with the head gaskets. The consumer felt that the engine should be replaced at no cost. The passenger side head gasket leaked oil badly. Ford replaced the head gasket once while under the manufacturer 36k mile warranty. The head gasket was replaced again at the consumers expense because the leak resumed. The consumer was informed by three different Ford technicians that the oil passage in the block of the engine was so close to the edge of the block that a head gasket would have a problem preventing oil from leaking out and Ford developed 2 or 3 revised head gaskets to address the problem since 1999. After th second repair ofthe head gasket, one of the heads leaked anti-freeze. Other problems were: an inoperative horn, transmission shifting made a whining noise and the vehicle would not heat up when at zero.

23 Horn Assembly problem of the 1999 Ford Expedition

Only a very small area on steering wheel is designated for horn. Have been in several situatoins where I needed to honk the horn quickly and hit the steering wheel hard with palm of hand and the horn did not sound. You must look down and find the tiny horn symbols that are the same color as the steering wheel and press hard with one or two fingers. Not a very user-friendly design to say the least. The Ford dealer and Ford customer service refuse to acknowledge any issue with the horn design.
