The rear lift gate randomly opens on the vehicle. Dealership has said it is a defective wiring harness. The lift gate close with people standing at the rear bumper loading items in the back and will continue to fight to continue closing operations. It does the same with opening. Additionally it has opened while sitting in the drivers seat with the key in the car. The car has been stationary for all openings. This has happened on multiple occasions and.

Started the car to get heater going and warmed up and started buckling my kids up in their car seats. That's when I started to smell an electrical burning smell coming through the vents. I turned the heater off and the smell got stronger. I turned the heater back on and smelled it even worse. I immediately switched it to ac instead of heat and then I started to notice smoke coming through the air vents. I immediately turned the car off. The smoke continued to bello out of the air vents. As soon and the interior lights turned off I noticed a glow under the passenger dash down by the corner of the floorboard. When I went around to look to see what was glowing I noticed there was a fire down in that corner and it was already big enough that I couldn't blow it out no matter how hard I blew. I am thankful that I keep a fire extinguisher in my garage and was able to quickly put it out. I normally strap my kids in and turn on a movie for them while I go back in the house and spend around 3 to 5 minutes getting the kids waters, making sure the diaper bag is stocked, and basic stuff like that. Had that fire started after I walked back in the house I am sure that I would have lost my kids in a blaze, strapped in to car seats, that day. It was thanksgiving eve. I found out that the blower fan for the vents is what sparked up and caught fire. There are no recalls by Ford for this and I have found out that I am not the only one this has happened to. This is an enormous safety hazard and I am shocked that it has gone ignored by Ford. Does an actual death need to take place before they set it right? because I did just buy it; the dealership replaced the fan. But the floorboard in that corner is all burnt up and am now questioning what more serious damage is in that dash that I can't see. Like the airbag or other electronic wiring that may now be at risk.

When turning the car on the front air conditioner vents won't blow most of the time. If the wiring under the dash on the passenger side is tapped/bumped it will then start blowing. It stops blowing and starts blowing again when bumped. The wiring gets hot. There are multiple cases of this being described on the internet. There is someone who states their vehicle caught on fire and burned to a skelton within 5 minutes. This is not safe and seems to be a common problem. This happens at all times when the vehicle is running with the ac turned on. The vehicle can be either stationary or moving. I purchased the vehicle in July 2020 and it's been happening any time the ac is running.

On the evening of July 7th, 2015 at approximately 10:45 p. M. We heard a commotion outside our apartment complex and discovered my '02 Expedition fully on fire and being doused by the local fire department. It had just come back from repairs that afternoon - to the pigtail switch and re-wiring in the steering column due to loss of turn signals and radio. Not only was my car destroyed, but the cars on either side were damaged, as well as damage to the apartment complex. We retained an attorney and our initial report from the fire department stated the cause as "faulty wiring. " the private fire investigator we retained has advised our attorney that the fire is due to the flawed cruise control system that has been the cause of hundreds of other fires in Ford vehicles. We intend to pursue this matter legally and would sincerely appreciate any assistance or advise your office can provide.

I was traveling at 70 mph on the interstate. The car popped, sputtered and died. Has steadily gotten more and more frequent. Engine dies at idle, dies at slow speeds as well as faster speeds. Very dangerous! have replaced the pcm, wiring harness, and fuel pump. Is not repaired. Power mirrors readjust themselves when the keyless entry is used. Several warning lights stay on, door ajar, check fuel cap, advatrac will not turn on. Rear window will not work. Back up sensor will not work. Interior lights as well as exterior lighting will not power off when car is turned off. You must manually turn them off or the battery drains. Cd player will not eject cd's loud popping sound in the front end and grinding sound when stopping. I have had this in the shop since June of 2014 and they cannot find the problem. Have already spent $1000 trying to repair. This vehicle is dangerous and can very likely cause an accident. It is not safe to drive. Ford auto shop wants to charge me $100 an hour to diagnose the problem then they are not sure if they can find the problem, they are telling me it could cost between $500-$1000 just to find the problem. I have checked several web sites and see that there are many, many people with the same problems with the same type of vehicle. This should be looked into before someone is injured or killed in an accident caused from the car stalling!!!.

Open door sound indicator while engine is running--vehicle stopped to let passenger out. When any door is opened, the open-door high pitched steady-hum sound comes on, which is normal, however, the hum will not shut off. It continues loudly for 8-10 minutes and then reduces to a faint hum under the dash. The sound(s) continue even after the SUV is turned off, put in park, and the key is removed. We are the original owners of the 2003 eddie bauer Expedition and it's otherwise in excellent shape with just 57,000 miles. This problem has recently been verified by a local Ford/kia repair shop whose mechanic scratched his head in confusion; however, they want to charge us to tear the dash apart to attempt to figure out why this is happening. They can't turn the indicator speaker off altogether. We want to know what Ford knows about the problem; mainly, what is causing the problem. Can if be fixed via a simpler solution (maybe a simple fuse or wiring?), is this is a possible future fire danger, and have any others have experienced this unusual occurrence.
The air conditioning unit is leaking excessive amounts of water under the carpet and the water is pooling under the rug and flowing into the channel where the wiring harness is located. This wiring harness does not look to be protected from water and it is a mater of time before the insulation on this wire breaks down and shorts out to the frame.

About two weeks before my car wouldn't go into drive I had it towed to the dealers. They fixed the problem it was a brake swith and soliniod. That needed replacing $300. 00 later its fixed. During the weeked my cruise control light kept flashing. My mother, daughter and I were waiting for my son who was at track practice on Monday 4-25-2011. We were waiting in the car and listening to the radio. I started my car to make sure it was going to start. As I started it it was full of smoke so I open the hood and there was a little spark fire. I look into my car to find water and I returned to attend to the problem and it was in full flame. I called the fire department to report fire. The parking lot was full of parents and children also waiting for there children. There's serious fire damage under the hood wires and sensors. I have taken pictures as proof. Oil spills from the resovior. Thank god we were there to stop it from loosing the vechile and our lives. I wanted to find out information for myself. What I need to do? is this Fords fault for not informing me that there's been thousand of cases of mine. I bought my car less than a year ago. I was never notified of any recalls or faultly wiring let alone car fires??? my kids and I don't know if it's drivable. I haven't drove it since. I am going to Ford dealership tomorrow 4-29-11.
The contact owns a 2004 Ford Expedition. While driving approximately 60 mph, the traction control system, abs and air bag warning indicators illuminated spontaneously. In addition, the headlights became dimmer. The contact was able to continue driving with caution to the residence. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing where they detected two trouble codes related to the wiring harness and computer system. There was a technical service bulletin under NHTSA item number 10009329 (electrical system). The vehicle was in the process of being repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 81,700.
We bought this vehicle in February 2010 it ran perfectly until we got the first snow of the year and then we started having major electrical problems. It started out just the warning lights would blink, then the radio would shut off in drive but come back on in park. Then the wipers would no longer work or the headlights! so we parked it for about a month, the second day the radio and heater came on without the keys even being in the vehicle so we had to disconnect the battery! we let it sit with the battery disconnected for awhile then tried it again. The SUV ran great for about 8 weeks then it snowed again and it suddenly started trying to start itself and we do not have remote start!!! now it does it every time you shift, start it, or whenever it is parked it just starts cranking away!! I now have smoke coming from somewhere behind the fuse box! the fuses are all good and I can't see any problem with the wiring. . . I have talked to several people who have had these exact same issues with this model of Expedition and none of them have been able to figure out what the problem is even after spending thousands of dollars. . . And Ford is refusing to issue a recall. . . So what are we to do as consumers when we are assured the vehicles we buy are safe and they turn out to be the exact opposite!!!!.

The ac blower would work at times and other times it would not blow any cold air. I took it to the local Ford dealer and was told the original blower motor had defects and a new motor was produced. It also required new wiring and a new blower control cell would be required. Cost over $300. 00. With this type of problem I would think it should be a recall and repaired by Ford.

On June 19 2009, returning home from a short trip, thick smoke erupted with strong rubber smell from underneath the driver seat. I immediately turned off the ignition and exited the car. The following day I contacted Ford motor CO. And inform them of the safety issue, after going back and forth, Ford general consul office made decision that the issue is not safety hazards and will not repair the vehicle. Pat milliken Ford has the vehicle, and inspected the damage, which declared to be very extensive the repair cost may exceed $2000. 00. Ford general consul was informed of the damage and still will not consider it as safety issue because the vehicle did not burst on fire. My Smart and quick reaction to turn off the vehicle and cut the power off prevented a disaster to happen, and yet as a consumer im left with hefty repair bills for a possible manufacturing defect in the wiring.
While traveling at highway speeds, the engine would quit with no proceeding symptoms or indications. Shifting to neutral and trying to re-start would not work. Shifting to neutral, turning off the ignition and then turning the key to start did cause a re-start. This problem causes the "service engine soon" light on the dash to light, so a code is being generated. Ford is aware of this problem, since it has issued a notice (not a recall) to it's service departments. The repair is the replacement of the alternator wiring harness assembly and reprogramming of the processor. Ford has not issued a recall for this very unsafe problem, so the charge for the work is $ 342. 64.
The contact owns a 2004 Ford Expedition. While driving approximately 55 mph, the engine lost power. The wiring harness was replaced; however, the failure continued a week later. On January 21, 2008, the dealer confirmed that one of the harnesses was defective and caused the engine to lose power. The dealer also confirmed that the failure was not related to a previous crash that occurred. The manufacturer in the corporate division stated that the contact would be required to pay $2,700 to replace the harness, but later adjusted the price to $780. The contact's claim number with the manufacturer was 1386151017. The contact does not feel that he should have to replace a defective part at his own expense. He asked if the part was defective, but no one has given him a response. The contact attempted to drive at reduced speeds to prevent the engine from shutting off while driving approximately 35 mph. When he attempted to drive 55 mph, the engine lost power. The contact was aware of the safety risk involved and was requesting specifics regarding his year, make, model vehicle and 4. 6l engine. The dealer information was unavailable. The approximate current mileage was 66,000 and approximate failure mileage was 38,000.
Windshield leaks water on to gem module and fuse box. After rain or snow vehicle will try to start while already running wipers, radio, door locks, power windows, lights flashers will not work. Dummy lights on dash will come on that water level low, no oil pressure and low battery. Now it will not shift out of park. Filed a formal complaint three months ago with Ford motor compny and they have yet to acknowledge that I ever filed report.
I took my 2000 Ford Expedition XLT in to huntington beach Ford to be serviced due to r. P. M. Fluctuation and a service engine soon light. They conducted a diagnosis and stated I would need a I. A. C. Part. The new I. A. C. Did not fix the problem so I took it back to h. B. Ford and they stated I would need a d. P. F. E. Sensor. I had them replace that which did not fix the problem because the service engine light illuminated and the r. P. M. Fluctuation was still evident. I went back to h. B. Ford and they diagnosed a new throttle body. I gave them the o. K. To replace the throttle body. They called me a couple days later to inform me that that did not solve your problem so I will need to pay an extra $400 for a diagnostic fee so they can check all the wiring. The manager has stated they believe it is coming from the wiring system? why do I have to pay for everything else when they cannot pinpoint the problem?.
: the contact stated while driving 45 mph, the vehicle completely stalled without warning and there were no lights illuminated. Each time the vehicle was restarted, it stalled again. An independent mechanic was contacted, and determined the battery needed to be replaced. Because the alternator was not charging the battery, the alternator had to be replaced. After both replacements, and checking the fuses, the battery light illuminated indicating the problem was repaired. Not too long after, the problem recurred. The vehicle was taken to the service dealer, who determined that the wiring harness was corroded. The part was unavailable at the dealer therefore the vehicle was taken to another service dealer who installed a new wiring harness. The manufacturer was not notified.
2003 Ford Expedition lost all power and almost got rear ended. ***** the vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and was almost involved in a head on collision. The vehicle finally stopped and was able to be restarted and driven to the consumer's home. The next day the vehicle was taken to a dealer. The dealer was unable to duplicate the problem and returned the vehicle to the consumer. About a week later the vehicle stalled again without warning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer a left for a few days so they could try to duplicate the problem. Unfortunately they were unable to and the vehicle was again returned to the consumer. The primary driver of the vehicle no longer felt safe driving the car especially since she transported her children in it. The consumer read somewhere that the wiring harness was the caused of the problem. The consumer told the dealer of his findings but they were not interested. They told him that the could not fix it unless they found the problem.

I own a 2003 Ford Expedition that has been giving me problems since day one. I have had several electrical problems with the vehicle causing the lights to remain on at all times and my battery to run down twice. The doors all seem to lock and unlock only when they want to and the most recent of my complaints is the rear passenger door has begun opening on its own while being driven. My 10 month old daughter and I were out shopping at a local shopping center a few weeks ago and while making a turn and preparing to park in a space the rear passenger door flung completely open. I was stunned. My daughter luckily was safely belted in her car seat in the middle seat. I shudder to think what could have happened if my other two children had of been with me at the time and had been sitting by that door which my 5 year old usually does on a daily basis. I contacted Ford motor company and they told me to have it evaluated by a Ford dealership which I did and it was proven to be a faulty latch and switch. I was told that there was no more warranty on the vehicle and that no extended warranty would cover it. It is considered to be normal wear and tear. I have owned the vehicle less than 3 years and I don't understand how a faulty latch and switch could end up being my fault. I have authorized the dealership to repair needless to say it is not worth the safety of my children, but I am still unsure how a faulty part is deemed the responsibility of the consumer. I have had several switches fixed for two other doors while under warranty but the problem just seems to be continuing. The total amount of the repair will run me $257. 00.
Hi. I have a 99 Ford Expedition and read on cnn you are conducting an investigation. I have had so many issues with the leaking windshield, and spent over 2200 dollars with no resolution. In the end, I found you could drill holes in parts of the fuse box. The really frustrating thing is I went into many different Ford dealers with documentation in hand regarding others with the same issue, and they all acted like they had never heard of the problem before. It's very upsetting. Can you please tell me what else I need to do to ensure my complaints are considered as part of your investigation?.

Last month, my 2000 Ford Expedition caught on fire in my driveway after sitting for about 3 hours. The engine compartment burst into flames and melted every plastic and rubber component inside, including the driver-side front tire. With the help of the round rock fire dept. , the fire was put out before it consumed the entire vehicle. A fire investigation report was taken and concluded it started in the fuse box area due to an electrical short.
2002 Ford Expedition had an under hood fire that ignited in the wire bank near wiper motor. *** no answer required*** the consumer was told the fire had nothing to do with the recall notice that he received. The consumer was told the problem appeared to be in the wiring and not the bulbs or fuses. The complained that the directional light was not working. The consumer was then told the multi-function switch needed to be replaced.
Vehicle was parked in front of the residence. Two hours later, vehicle caught on fire. The fire department was called out to extinguish out the fire. Vehicle was towed and totaled by the insurance company.
While parked for approximately five hours vehicle caught on fire. The cause of this was undetermined.
On January 15th, 2005 my wife had returned from a short trip from the grocery store in our 1999 Ford Expedition around 9:30pm. She had been home about 45 minutes when I noticed the smell of smoke. I looked out the door to the garage and saw flames coming out from under the hood near the windshield. I quickly took the keys and tried to crank it to get it out of the garage and away from the house. Fortunately it did crank. After I attempted to put the fire out with a fire extinquisher the local fire department put out the fire. The car was declared a total loss by my insurance company a couple days later. I have no doubt that this fire was caused by a faulty cruise-control DE-selector switch. The cruise-control had stopped working about 4 or 5 months ago. After the fire I noticed a puddle of fluid on our garage floor. I now know that was brake fluid from the master cylinder. I called montgomery motors service department on Tuesday January 25th and they said they had never heard of this problem with Expeditions. Two days later Ford announces a recall on certain year model Expeditions (not 1999). I'm upset that Ford knew of this problem and did nothing about until there were over 63 fires (not counting this one). And now they are only recalling a few year models when it is obvious that this is a problem with 1997 thru 2002 models. I was very fortunate that my home and family was not burned up in this fire. Some other families may not be as lucky. Thank you in advance for your attention to this dangerous problem.
My 2000 Ford Expedition after not being driven for over 6 hours caught on fire. The fire started in the engine compartment and in a time span of 15 minutes was a total loss. The fire burned the front of my house melting the siding and the garage door.
Vehicle was parked while all of a sudden consumer heard a loud noise. The engine caught fire, eventually burning down the vehicle. The cause was undetermined.
The truck was parked inside the garage and the truck and garage caught on fire. No injuries reported. The fire department was called to extinguish the fire. Vehicle was towed and totaled by the insurance company. Prior to the fire. The vehicle leaked gas, the dealer stated a gas line was loose.
Vehicle was parked inside the garage. Four hours later the vehicle caught on fire. Vehicle was towed and totaled by the insurance company. Consumer states that Ford motor company would over night claim of loss form but it has not been received.
While the vehicle was parked a fire started in the engine compartment. Vehicle was towed to the dealership. However, dealership did not resolve the problem. The cause was not determined. Same as odi #10099927.
Consume rparked the vehicle an d 10 minutes later returned to vehicle and found it smoking. Smoke coming from passenger side of engine compartment. On the way in to work the radio was cutting in and out.
Vehicle caught on fire after being parked 5 to 10 minutes. Fire centered on driver's side near the firewall. The cruise control and rear windshield wiper failed within 2 months of the fire.
