1 Underhood Wiring problem of the 2003 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 12/26/2009

I was driving down the freeway when my Expedition made a noise, the inside dash lights flickered and the transmission started acting up. I pulled over at a hotel. I called a tow truck who came to pick it up a few days later. When he started it the wiring harness caught unfire. The entire wiring burned up on the lift side of the vehicle. The mechanic told us we were luck to have stopped. If we continued down the highway my family and I would have been in great danger. I believe the fire was the fault of bad wiring. I check the recall sites and my vehilce was not part of the faulty wiring recall.

9 Underhood Wiring problem of the 2002 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 06/21/2006

A fuse blew & the windows wouldn't go up. When I replaced it smoke started pouring out from under the hood of my Ford Expedition 2002, eddie bower which was parked in my garage. I took out the fuse & tried to back the Expedition out of the garage but I couldn't take it out of park. I put the fuse back in & flew out of the garage smoke again coming out from under the hood. I took out the fuse & open the hood. The smoke was coming from a senor on the master cylinder. I sprayed the fire extinguisher on it and unplugged it. I put it in the shop & they change the cruise control brake switch. The same part was recalled on my f150 XLT 2000 pick-up. My cruise control & horn won't work now & the shop doesn't know what is wrong to fix but I can put the fuse in & the windows go up & down, & we can drive it. The shop said that when this part goes out it lets a charge feed back to the ground side & can cause fires. It is the same part as was recalled on my pick-up!.

10 Underhood Wiring problem of the 2002 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 12/30/2005

I currently own a 2002 Ford Expedition. A recall was performed (at an authorized Ford dealer) to correct an issue with the cruise control switch possibly overheating and causing a vehicle fire. On December 30th 2005, my Expedition became engulfed in flames while parked. The vehicle was a total loss.

11 Underhood Wiring problem of the 1998 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 08/03/2005

My 98 Expedition was parked in my garage when my son came home and opened the garage a saw smoke coming out. I had been home about 80 mins. The smoke was coming from under the hood of my exp. I quickly started the vehicle to get it out of the garage area, but it would not go into reverse - the brake pressure fuse had blown due to the wire fire, so the car was stuck in park. Luckily the fire went out on it's own. Problem was the cruise control deactivation switch sparked (somehow) and started a small wire fire under the hood - near the brake fluid reservior. This could have burned my car and my house down !! north central Ford (richardson TX) would not fix the problem at no charge, because "only the 2000 models had a recall" !! they did acknowledge that the 1997 to 2001 models are currently being "investigated" by Ford engineers and the NHTSA for the same fire problem that I had. My mechanic (not a Ford dealer) disconnected the wire harness so now the fuse won't blow and I can drive the vehicle. I will have my mechanic fix the problem tomorrow.

12 Underhood Wiring problem of the 1999 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 07/27/2005

1) noticed in mid may that the cruise control on my 1999 Ford Expedition stopped working. No other performance issues were noticed and since it was not critical it was not repaired at that time. 2) on July 27, 2005 the 1999 Ford Expedition caught on fire and burned. The fire chief on site indicated that the fire started in the area of the master cylinder, where the speed control deactivation switch is located. 3) my insurance company, usaa is in the process of investigating the cause of the fire and I am awaiting information from them. I have not contacted Ford at this time.

14 Underhood Wiring problem of the 1999 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 07/22/2005

I have a '99 Ford Expedition and I developed a problem where I lost the brake and turn signal lights in my car. I replaced the fused and it immediately popped again. So I took it to my mechanic, and he looked at it. There was brake fluid up in the cruise control switch, all the way up in the cable harness (in the wires), and in the connector at the junction/fuse box. When he removed the cruise control switch, he discovered that the cruise control switch was the new switch and it sparked and it caught fire. Luckily the flame was contained to just the switch and the mechanic was able to cut the switch out of the car and blow it out before the fire spread. He told me the car had to go to Ford and he suggested that I not drive it, as it was a fire hazard. So it was towed. The Ford dealership got in and investigated and they determined that I needed a whole new cabling harness because of melted wires and brake fluid contamination and that the price was going to be $500 and a new cruise control switch and fuses. I instructed Ford to go ahead with the repairs and to save all of the old parts. Ford said that because the cruise control switch had already been replaced, this vehicle was not subject to the recall despite the entire list of other coincidental failures that could have led to a fire and possible loss of life. I have no doubt that had the old switch still been in place, there would have been a fire already. As things were, my mechanic joe taylor, at taylor's automotive said it was just a matter of time before this one would go up.

15 Underhood Wiring problem of the 1998 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 07/01/2005

1998 Ford Expedition. On July 1, 2005 cruise control deactivation switch burned and melted rendering vehicle inoperable (temporarily). Three children needed to be "evacuated" in tears as smoke billowed from under the hood. Altough a known issue to Ford, because their current recall is 2000 year only they offered no (yes no) assistance for repair (only asking that the defective part(s) be replaced - not any other subsequent damages. There were none other than the smoke). Thought you may like to here about it. Thanks, david.

21 Underhood Wiring problem of the 1998 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 03/11/2005

I have a 1998 Ford Expedition, and the cruise control stopped working, the anti-lock brakes stopped working, the brake lights stopped working, and I could not put the car in gear. I looked at the fuse box and found a fuse blown. When I replaced the fuse, the engine compartment in the car started smoking profusely. I pulled the fuse out right away, and had someone watch as I put it back in. The smoking started again, and it was coming from some type of brake switch on the front of the master cylinder. I took the car to airport Ford in florence, ky, and they said it was the same problem that the 2000 Fords were being recalled for. I asked them if it was covered under the re-call, and they said it was not the right year or VIN. They said they didn't know why because it was the exact same switch causing the exact same fire that others are experiencing. I had to pay $158. 14 plus $15. 00 "shop supplies" plus $10. 39 in taxes, totaling $183. 53 for a design and safety flaw - the same one that they say only affects the 2000 models. Ford is trying to keep from taking care of the problem for other models even though even their own dealership technicians say is the same exact problem.
