1 Ignition Module problem of the 2000 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 01/02/2013

Vehicle sitting in driveway after 2 days of rain. Went to start up vehicle and battery dead. Took battery out to be tested and tested fine. Spent $165 on alternator replacement. Vehicle dead again next morning. Charged battery started vehicle up. Noticed water in floorboards and headliner. When key was removed from ignition, radio was still on and door would still ding as if key in ignition. Battery dead again several hours later. After doing research, was extremely frustrated to learn the issue is very well documented with improperly sealed windshields. Rather than Ford paying to reseal or inform consumers to fix out of their own pockets, they allowed consumers to experience dreadful electrical malfunctions with vehicle. Without going to mechanic, I removed both the gem module and fuse box. Put fax in vehicle to speed up the drying process. Allowed fuse box to sit inside for a week and ordered a gem module off the internet. Cleaned corrosion from fuse box/gem connectors and replaced gem module. Vehicle performs much better. Things that haven't worked in years (auto locks) now work. However, radio loses power intermittently which is frustrating. I own 2 Fords and am a very very disappointed consumer that something that could have been fixed for $100 have cost loyal consumers thousands.

2 Ignition Module problem of the 2000 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 12/18/2009

I own a 2000 Ford Expedition. I am have continuing electrical problems. Initially, about 1 month after purchasing my vehicle, whenever it rained my electrical system would go haywire. The 4x4 lights would blink on and several other warnings lights including a clicking noise. I would take my key out of the ignition and the blower motor would continue to blow without the key in. When driving the radio, odometer and clock would go on and off at random times. I was told the windshield was leaking into the gem module and fuse box and I had to have a new windshield put in as well as the gem module replaced. I did this and the truck was okay for a few months. More electrical problems involving the abs light on the dash, the 4x4 light, the battery light as well as the battery control showing low. The blower continues to turn on when the key is removed as well as the running board lights remaining on. I have had to disconnect and replace the battery several times. I am concerned this is a safety issue first and foremost because of the abs light as well as fire hazard. Ford has refused to address these continual electrical problems.

3 Ignition Module problem of the 1999 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 10/16/2009

1999 Ford Expedition. SUV has been random electrical anomalies over the past month from today. Gauges, interior fans, and lights would stay on when the ignition would bee in the off position and key removed. Upon inspection from a local Ford dealership service department, it has been noted from them that corrosion of the general electrical module and fuse box are the cause, most likely from a water leak from the front windshield. Improper information from dash consoles can lead to stalls on roadways or improper driving due to improper information received from the instrument panel. In my case, it is limited to battery drain, improper fuel readings, windshield wiper failure, and failure to start. In the end it is mainly a resemblance to odi complaint ea05-015.

4 Ignition Module problem of the 2000 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 01/02/2009

We recently had a snow storm in our area. After the storm our Expedition started having problems. The first problem to occur was the front blower motor for the climate control would turn on high when the ignition was turned to the off position. I started researching this problem and started finding many similar stories on the internet. The next day many other problems popped up several dash light were flashing on and off, when this was happening you could here relays under the dash clicking on and off. When the truck was having its episode of flashing lights I found that my window controls and windshield wipers also did not work. I parked the car and turned it off that day and it had one more surprise for me. When the light switch was turned to the automatic day time running lights and the key was off you could here relays under the dash opening and closing at a fast rate. I turned the switch to off and it stopped. I talked to my stepfather who is a mechanic. He told me that he has seen this before he said it probably was my gem module, he said that this type of vehicle is prone to these modules malfunctioning. I did more research on line and found that a investigation was done on this issue by NHTSA the action number was ea05015 it was conducted in 2005. From the looks of it this has been a problem for a long time that has affected many people but still no action has been taken. This is one of two problems I have had with this otherwise good vehicle which is making it an unreliable and unsafe vehicle. How can I feel safe letting my family drive around in this vehicle when it rains or snows which is for the most part all the time in washington? in conclusion I hope this is taken seriously and will have some kind of impact on getting this problem solved not just for me but for all the owners of this vehicle with the same problem.

5 Ignition Module problem of the 2003 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 01/06/2008

Outside mirror lights and interior lights would not go off after getting out of vehicle and pressing remote lock button. They eventually ran the battery down. This was after a hard rain. A few weeks later the same thing happened only this time, the radio would not turn off (key out of ignition and doors open) the chime kept going off and the battery went dead because I did not disconnect it. I researched online and found this is not uncommon because the windshield leaks, from the factory, and water drips down onto the computer module and fuse box. I checked my fuse box and I did have dripping water in it along with corroded connectors, inside the vehicle, indication long term intrusion of water. This causes all kinds of problems. Other owners have reported complete loss of power while driving. Upon inspecting my oem windshield I found it completely separated at the top and I could see light between the glass and seal. I now have to buy a new windshield along with fuse block and computer crap. The other problem is that the entire top of the windshield, as mentioned, is not sealed. I have been informed that the windshield integrity is a huge part of the strength of the vehicle and the windshield is used to support the passenger side air bag in case of deployment. I don't have that integrity on my vehicle. This is very unsafe condition and this should be something that Ford pays for.

6 Ignition Module problem of the 1999 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 12/31/2007

Car on board computer had to be replaced.

7 Ignition Module problem of the 2001 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 12/30/2007

I was coming home from church in heavy rain in 2001 Expedition when the windshield wipers and radio quit. I was forced to pull over due to not being able to see road ahead. I shifted into park and the radio and wipers came on. But as soon as I shifted back into drive they quit again. So I waited out the rain. When rain ceased I made it home with no wipers or radio. When I switched the ignition to off and removed the key the radio and wipers started to work again. The reading on the speed odometer was little dashes, and three warning light were own. Turn key back on and tried to crank SUV. It would only turn the engine over (not starting it). I disconnected the battery to keep from running battery down. If this had happen in heavy rain on a crowded highway there would have been a major accident and probably death. It seem that the 2001 Expedition has a history of windshield leaks letting the rain get on the fuse panel junction and gem module. What will it take to get Ford to fix this problem, death and property damage?.

8 Ignition Module problem of the 2001 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 10/11/2007

I have a 2001 Ford Expedition and 1 year ago the heater would stay on after I would remove the key from the ignition and the battery would be dead every morning. 4 months ago I was driving in the rain and when I put my car into park the radio would turn on and I would put it into drive and it would turn off. Two days ago I was at work and I had gone to my car to retrieve something and I could hear across the parking lot that my car was trying to start without my key in the ignition I was freaking out, how can a car start without a key. I opened my car and put my key in the ignition, not knowing what to do I tried to start it to turn it off and when it was off I closed the door and started to walk back into work and it all the sudden was trying to start itself again. I went into work to get a man to come and unplug my battery. After work I reconnected the battery and it started I picked up my children and on the way home my car started grinding making weird noises then the radio was going on and off. I pulled over and grabbed my children out of the car thinking it was going to start an electrical fire. I had to stand in the rain and wait for a ride to pick us up and take us home. This only seems to happen in the rain. I was so scared for my self and my children. I went home and called a friend who knows a lot about cars and he said that this is common in Ford Expeditions the windshield window leaks. He says I have to get a new windshield and a gem module and a fuse box and a junction box. How can this be such a problem and Ford has not recalled the leaky windshields. My husband is very ill and we do not have any money to fix this. I now have no way to get him back and forth to the hospital. We all pay so much money for our cars and we have to worry about possible fires and unwanted elecrical activity when the car is unattended. I really hope Ford can help me and many others out their.

9 Ignition Module problem of the 1997 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 01/13/2006

I have experienced a problem with my 97 Ford Expedition not starting after sitting for longer than two days for over a year now. I have had the local Ford dealership attempt to find the draw keeping the vehicle for over a month total. When it rained the problem seemed to be worse. Eventually I was left with having to have a battery booster in the back and jump the car as it needed with no solution from the dealer. Today I went out to the car almost a year later of dealing with this and the car wouldn't start after less than 24 hours of not driving it. The car was not completely dead as there was clicking noises upon turning the ignition but did not turn over. Removed the keys from ignition and got out of car to get battery booster from the back and heard popping and static noise from passenger front speaker very loud. Again, keys were not even in the ignition. Noise continued to come from the speaker for over 30 min until I jumped the car. When started the clock and radio would not work and noise continued to come from the speaker, also noticed water leaking down passenger side handle located by the windshield. Drove immediately to garage specializing in electrical and was told of water leaking from windshield seal failure very common in this vehicle and position of fuse and gem module allowing water to leak in and pool acting as a conductor resulting in components coming on and malfunctioning without vehicle on is very common. Resolution, replace windshield as seal needs to be corrected (approx. $280. 00) and replace fuse and gem module (approx. $600. 00). I left the garage and called the local dealer and was told the same and service manager said with our recent rain of 25 days running here in wa they were seeing a lot of this and is common but there is no recall for this. After doing research online this evening I am shocked how many similar complaints I have found for this and a couple of other problems I have noticed.

10 Ignition Module problem of the 2000 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 01/13/2006

When raining car electrical system comes on by itself-dash lights, heater fan, door entry sounds. Car ignition turns over but will not start. I have had the windshield taken out and replaced more than once, the gem module and fuse box replaced, numerous towing bills and major inconvenience. I have spent $1500 approx. To say nothing of the value of my time. The Ford dealer will not continue to correct the problem nor will he offer a refund for repairs. As the owner of almost twenty personal and business vehicles, I can't believe Ford will not get this issue resolved for myself and the many other Expedition owners with similar complaints. I will no longer be a Ford customer and will replace this and the other Ford vehicles in our fleet with another brand unless Ford does something to correct the problem quickly. Sb.

11 Ignition Module problem of the 2000 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 12/26/2004

Rolling up driver window-clicking noise/ticking in front end during slow turns-slowing down/engine vibration and roaring on acceleration/accelerator sticking while using cruise control/electrical problems(I. E-windows rolling up and down w/out prompting, door locks inoperable, running board lights flashing on and off or non-functioning, illuminated temp. And compass flashing or non-functioning, fan in a/c running for no reason w/vehicle off and keys out of ignition, indicator lights in dash flashing on and off, wipers operating w/out prompting, rear window wiper non-functioning, stereo only working in park and reverse or not at all, electrical clicking noise under the dash, left blinker faster than the right)/black foam substance coming from a/c vents/thumping noise right wiper when in use. The problems have been reported to Ford dealer and they stated it was a bad gem module and told us that it was getting wet. They stated to disconnect the battery when the vehicle is parked. These problems are worse when it rains. They also stated that this will happen if it is humid. We live in florida, I don't think that we should have to disconnect the battery everytime we park the vehicle. But if we don't, we have all of this going on when the vehicle is off and then the battery goes dead. I was driving on the highway and all of these things started happening at one time, it was raining. I almost lost control of the vehicle trying to get the wipers to function and get the vehicle off the road until all of this stopped. I bought the truck used from a local dealer back in November of last year. The problems began almost immediately. As the problems have gotten worse, I looked this up on the internet and found that Ford knew about the problem with the gem module, just as they knew about the cruise control problem and they are doing nothing to fix it. As I stated above, their answer to the problem which they knew existed, is to disconnect my battery everytime I park the vehicle.

13 Ignition Module problem of the 1998 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 10/19/2004

I just started experiencing about 2 years ago about the same problem described in the the associated press article on the cnbc financial web page. During extreme periods rain, dampness or high humidity, my truck would not run correctly. It started out with the speedometer not working (or the cruise control), but drove fine down the road. Then as time & months went on the symptoms seemed to get worse. Besides the speedometer not working or the cruise control when it rained, the transmission started not shifting at its normal ã‚shifting pointsã‚쳜 & the overdrive light on the gear shifter would flash on & off repeatedly. When it was dry out or if I used the floor heater when it rain, it would run ok. Then one day in the rain all the ã‚idiot cluster lightsã‚쳜 in the dash would all start flashing on & off with a ã‚clicking or switchingã‚쳜 sound from under the dash. It got to a point during a heavy rain that all of the above would happen at the same time over a 40 mile drive, & the rear window wiper would stop working in mid-wipe & the vehicle would start loosing power. At this point I took it to my local Ford dealer & told them the same things. Finally after the 2 visits & another hour to hour & a half to diagnose & troubleshoot the problem they told me that my windshield was leaking somewhere & was causing the problem. They said Ford had a ã‚tsbã‚쳜 technical service bulletin out. They found both the ã‚gem & cjbã‚쳜 modules (part #ã‚s f852-14b205-ka & f752-14ad68-ba) under the dash all ã‚wet & corrodedã‚쳜 & needed to be replaced at a cost of $589. 94 just for the parts plus $74. 95 hr. Labor & a $7. 50 hazardous waste for a repair order charge. I took my truck to a local glass shop to find the leak & replace the seal. They discover that the ã‚sealã‚쳜 for the windshield was leaking at the top near the rain cutters on the roof & running down the ã‚aã‚쳜 pillars & was also starting to rust that area near the support structure for the glass.

14 Ignition Module problem of the 2000 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 10/10/2004

6-12 months ago, 2000 Ford Expedition started having erratic electrical behavior. Windshield wipers quit working during rainstorm while away on vacation. Was very hazardous to have happen while driving down highway during a downpour! radio would go on and off while shifting the automatic transmission. Took to dealer (still under warranty at this time), they "tightened up some things", problem went away, until next rain storm! due to needing the vehicle, I could not get it back to dealer before factory warranty expired. I thought it would be ok though, because I had purchased a "premium" extended warranty. Took to dealer a second time, now truck tries to start itself with no key in ignition, wipers again fail while driving during rainstorm, heater blower motor remains running after exiting vehicle. This drains the battery if left overnight, and results in an inoperable vehicle. Truck four wheel drive indicators flash on and off at times while driving. Not a good feeling when traveling 70 mph on the freeway. After inspection, dealer informs me that water has intruded into the dash components due to a leaking windshield. They state the extended warranty wont cover it because they dont cover "water intrusions". Gem module, fusebox need replaced, windshield resealed to fix problem. Quote of about $1000. 00 I declined repairs at the time. Went home and researched the problem. Seems many, many people have had the same problem. I called Ford and after many phone calls, they declined to do anything about it. I am very disappointed with Ford. Have always bought their products because I believed they stood behind their reliability and workmanship. Here is a factory installed windshield that started leaking before their 3/36 warranty expired, their dealer "band-aided" the problem instead of fixing the cause of the problem while still under warranty. Now I have an inoperable vehicle in my driveway that frankly, seems to be a major safety risk to put my family of six in.

15 Ignition Module problem of the 1997 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 04/24/2004

When I drive through a puddle or it rains it leaks somewhere and the g. E. M. (gem) module gets wet and the speedometor, odometer, runningboard lights don't work and it doesn't shift correctly until you let it dry out.

17 Ignition Module problem of the 1998 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 04/13/2000

A spark plug that had not been properly torqued at the Ford factory loostened and destroyed the cylinder head. It took the Ford dealer 2 weeks to remove the engine from the vehicle, get the parts, and make the repair.

18 Ignition Module problem of the 1998 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 03/18/2000

As we pulled out of a toll booth on the g. S. Pkwy we heard a loud bang immediately followed by loss of acceleration power. Apparently a spark plug was blown from the engine. It remained attached to the wire but neither that plug or a new one could be replaced because the cylinder was stripped. The vehicle was towed to kaytes Ford. We're hoping Ford will incur the expense of repairing it since this should never had happened especially on a vehicle with 41,000 miles. Warranty was up at 36,000.

19 Ignition Module problem of the 1998 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 01/06/1999
