3 Ignition problem of the 2005 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 06/15/2011

Our vehicle is a 2005 Ford Expedition limited. On two occasions this vehicle has unexpedtedly lost all power with the message "check electronic throttle" appearing. On one occassion we were making a left turn on a busy road. When the vehicle lost power we were stuck in the middle of the road with oncoming traffic having to stop suddenly to keep from hitting us broadside. Turning off the ignition and restarting the car made the problem go away. Last week my wife and son were in the vehicle coming to a stop at an intersection. When applying the brake the vehicle suddenly accelerated. My wife had to break hard and narrowly missed hitting the car in front of her. The vehicle was brought to the dealership where I was informed that they will need to replace the throttle body. After resaearching this issue on the internet it appears that both these problems are common with the 2005 Expedition. If this vehicle has not seriously injured or killed someone yet it is amazing and just a matter of time before it happens. I do not understand why this problem is being ignored by Ford!.

4 Ignition problem of the 2006 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 01/06/2011

My wife was driving her 2006 Ford Expedition down a busy road at a speed of about 40 mph. She was driving with another friend and our 2 children (18 months and 1 week!) a wrench symbol warning light came on and the vehicle shut down. She put on her hazards and was able to safely come to a stop. She turned the ignition key to the off position and then was able to start the engine again. After talking to a mechanic and doing internet research I found this is a very common problem which consists of the electronic control of the throttle. The fix is upwards of $500; so a recall of something that expensive can easily be brushed under the table by Ford. This problem needs to be addressed by Ford. If more vehicles keep shutting down on their own someone will soon be injured or killed.

6 Ignition problem of the 2000 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 08/13/2009

I have a 2000 Ford Expedition. After a really bad rainstorm today my SUV started acting possessed. It has been working fine and now all of the sudden the headlights turn themselves off and on, when they car is off the key is not in the ignition. The fan/ac in the SUV runs while the vehicle is off and the key is not in the Expedition. The whole electrical system is acting crazy, the SUV does things on its on even when the vehicle is off and the key is not in the ignition. I had been left stranded with my vehicle in the walmart parking lot with the light, gauges, and air turning itself on and off. I am a single mother and I am so scared to drive it when it drives because I am worried the electrical system could catch fire or I could get into an accident with my daughter in the vehicle.

7 Ignition problem of the 2000 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 04/15/2009

I was driving on the pennsylvania turnpike in a hard rain and the windshield wipers stopped working. I could not see and was forced to quickly brake and pull off of the road. This caused a car behind me to swerve out of control. Fortunately, there was not any physical accident. I am very concerned about the safety of this vehicle and feel like I can't drive the vehicle safely in the rain. Symptoms in the rain only: windshield wipers stop working. Radio, fan lights work intermittently. Clicking noises and fan running when vehicle is off and key is not in ignition. Very well documented issue on the internet. Due to leaky windshield which damages electrical system but Ford has no recall since it is "not a safety issue". Case number from Ford customer service - 0382221079.

8 Ignition problem of the 1999 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 02/18/2009

Water leaks in the windshield causing blower motor to stay on after ignition is on, randomly tries to start when key is not even in ignition, lights blink, could cause fire.

9 Ignition problem of the 2005 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 01/20/2009

While traveling at approximately 60 mph in morning rush hour on a major highway a message appeared on the display board stating check electronic throttle sensor vehicle then immediately died and I was unable to accelerate. I was able to coast to the shoulder attempting to avoid any collisions. Once I came to a stop I placed the vehicle in park and turned the ignition off. After a few minutes I restarted the car without any problems. The message on the display screen was no longer there but the check engine was on. For the remainder of the day I had no further issues. The following day after work it happened again in 5:00 traffic. Once returning home I began to do some research on this issue. To my surprise I am not the only one having this issue. There are 100's of post on line in multiple places inquiring about this issue. My concern is the safety of my family and others that may be on the highway when this issue occurs. When this occurs you are unable to accelerate. This could cause severe accidents as well as deaths if this issue is not addressed.

Electric throttle control went out while driving ast 60 mph also ignition fuse went out so car was dead leaving me stranded in the middle of no where with 4 girls in the car. The engine literally stopped while I was driving at 60 mph. Could have been very dangerous if on a crowded interstate.

15 Ignition problem of the 2000 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 10/15/2007

We recently had a specialist inspect the 2000 eddie bauer Ford Expedition because of repeated electrical problems. He found a technical service bulletin for Ford on the failure of windshield seals. He further advises that the repairs will be in excess of $1000. We have experienced failure of the vehicles electric system as outlined on at least 5 separate occasions. All times were preceded by moisture. The interior lights malfunctioned, the windshield wipers stopped, the blower motor was on high with ignition off, the radio shuts off, the interior dash lights remained on, etc. I have had my mechanic replace several items including the fuses and relays for the electronics.

16 Ignition problem of the 2000 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 10/08/2007

Our 2000 Ford Expedition has an electrical problem that was described in Ford special notice 15773. When it rains, water leaks into the gem/cjb and causes the electrical system to short out. This results in blowers running while the key is not in the ignition, the car to stall out while in use, and the car to not start at all at sometimes. Since it is an electrical problem, it may also lead to vehicle fire. This occurs every time there is rain/snow. The dealership has looked at the problem before, but has not been able to find the problem. I discovered the problem searching on the internet and finding many other owners with the same problems. Finally, one post referenced Ford special notice 15773 which describes exactly what is happening to our vehicle. This needs to be recalled before fires and worse occur.

17 Ignition problem of the 1999 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 09/14/2007

Started my vehicle and heard a loud noise followed by a steady popping noise. I opened the hood and found the rear spark plug on the passenger side had been blown out of the engine. I have since read hundreds of other complaints of this occurring, some causing fires.

18 Ignition problem of the 2000 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 01/16/2007

On January 16, 2007 my wife drove our 2000 eddie bauer Expedition to work as usual parked n a covered parking garage and went to work. At the end of the day she attempted to start her car and it was totally dead and would not start. She therefore had to get jump started in order to get home. On 1-17-07 I took the vehicle to a certified Ford service department and had them evaluate and diagnose the problem. Seems that the gem and cjb were water damaged and creating significant electrical shorts throughout the vehicles operating system. When the car was turned off the fan motor would actually continue to blow even with the keys out of the ignition. Also the car at times would not turn off with the key. You can take the key out of the ignition and the car would still run. Anyway, the dealer indicates that the windshield would have to be replaced and sealed as this was the source of the water damage. I questioned the validity of the diagnosis and the service advisor indicated that they were working on 2 more trucks with the same problem. The total cost of the repair is going to be $1150 to replace the windshield the gem and cjb. I have been reading up on this problem and fine that this problem is pretty wide spread in Ford Expeditions and want to make my particular situation a matter of record with the NHTSA in an effort to add to the number of consumers experiencing this problem. My vehicle has a long history of electrical problems which were corrected under a extended warranty. I am certain that this windshield leak problem is the source of my long standing problems.
