My 2016 f150 had a recall (22s11 in Mar 11,2022 which they replaced the master cylinder on my truck. This week 10/16/2025 I noticed my brakes are failing again, the pedal goes allmost to the floor. I will have to have them repaired again. Don't know if dealer will repair free of charge?.
Brake master cylinder failed. Sudden, complete loss of brake pressure with all the brake fluid leaking into brake booster. I had to replace the unit as the car was not drivable even after adding fluid. The unit has not been inspected. Brake fluid indicator came on when there was a sudden loss of fluid due to the master cylinder failure,.
The contact owns a Ford 2016 F-150. The contact stated while driving at 55mph, a warning light illuminated from the vehicle stating no brake fluid in brake cylinder. The contact pulled over to the side of the road and added brake fluid. The contact continued to drive and after a few minutes the warning light reappeared. The contact was able to continue to drive back to their residence. The contact had the vehicle towed to a local dealer who inspected the vehicle and diagnosed the failure as the master cylinder was leaking fluid into the brake booster. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 40,000.
No brakes. Took to Ford. Does not fall under current recall of NHTSA campaign number 20v-332. However my Ford dealer is charging me to replace the same exact parts under the recall. Brake booster pump and brake master cylinder. Exactly what happened. No brakes. Brake fluid low. Added more brake fluid, not leaking under truck. Emergency brake still works. Had it towed to Ford 2 weeks ago. They are not returning my call. They did tell me they had to order brake booster pump, brake master cylinder and flush the brake lines. $3000 repair. Odd that this is the same repair under the recall.
I have had no problems but ask to change DE brake master cylinder. . . But inhave had no leaks and nothing shows up in the dash. At the dealer they said they just carry the brake master cylinder. They dont have the brake booster. Am I safe? why asked to change a part when they dont have the othwr parte just in case?.
Brake master cylinder spontaneously developed a leak causing significantly reduced braking while the vehicle was in motion. The pedal became very soft and went almost to the floorboard. This is the very problem described in recall 20v-332, but my manufacturing date is 9 days past the cut-off window of August 1, 2016. There are probably more trucks out there like mine waiting to fail.
2016 f150, 3. 5l, manuf kansas city October 2016. Complete brake failure resulting in a collision of the f150 and its towed trailer. Over $4,000 damage to f150 and trailer, and $1,066 to replace master brake cylinder and brake booster. Gaylord Ford (bill marsh) 1928 otsego Ave, gaylord, mi 49735 (989) 732-4835 so#927036 diagnosed: master cylinder leaking into brake booster safety recall 20s31. Owner advised f150 VIN was manufactured oct 2016, 3 months after 20s31 cut-off August 1, 2016. June 8, 2020 Ford motor company recall 20s31 chronology page 2: “Ford proposed conducting a customer satisfaction campaign to repair master cylinders if and when they fail and to continue monitoring the population of non-recalled vehicles. Due to the severity of this case at high-speed and potential for fatal and life changing injuries, full brake failure and none of the warning scenarios described by Ford in 4 items below; reasonableness on any public safety business standard would ‘red flag’ this wurst case scenario for investigation and review. Chronology page 1, ¶4 - loss of brake fluid: none of the following were observed. In this case “brake” illuminated on dash and then not illuminated to normal. Total brake failure followed 20 minutes later without any of these 4 Ford described scenarios a driver is to expect. 1) “the driver will receive an audible chime, a full screen message center alert, and a red brake warning indicator in the instrument cluster; all indicating that brake system service is required. ” 2) “braking ability would still be unchanged at that time. ” 3) “if a vehicle continues to be operated and additional fluid is depleted, the driver may begin to experience a change in brake pedal travel and feel. ” 4) “if a loss of brake fluid is substantial enough to reduce brake function to the front wheels, full braking function would remain in the rear wheel circuit. Indisputable evidence the failure is grossly worsened beyond 20s31 cut-off now into oct 2020.
My brakes went out while I was driving it and I almost crashed into other cars because of it. . There is a recall for this issue 20s31 already. According to the Ford website, the problem is with the brake master cylinder and brake booster, this repair will be completed free of charge for material and labor. The dealership , pinnacle Ford , is trying to charge me 1200. 00 for the repair because it has not been determined what is covered in the recall. I have been trying to reach somebody at Ford to handle the situation for 3 days. I finally reached somebody on the phone and they said I needed to call back because the system was down. Nobody seems to want to be responsible for this problem.

The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the same failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 70,000. Jft.
My wife was driving our 2 girls to our nanny's home and the brakes completely failed on her while she was driving. Fortunately she did't get too far. And thank goodness we were not traveling our normal commute which is on a 75 mph highway. I love my truck, but now I feel unsafe driving it. It is sitting now until Ford fixes it. The more information I read and collaborate, the more disappointed I am in this vehicle and manufacturer. We already had one safety incident with this truck as the rear driver's side passenger seatbelt was installed backwards! now the brakes failing completely while driving is the last straw. What is shocking to me is that there was a recall for this as far back as 2015 however, some of the faulty parts (master brake cylinder) trickled into production. This recall had to do with the brake master cylinder and if the vehicle was equipped with the faulty part, it could lose all of it's braking capability. Again, I am thanking my lucky stars that all of my girls are ok, but this is unaccep as a vehicle should not lose 100% of braking while in use. What if this happened on the highway we travel every week? have a look at the attached photos. An empty brake fluid reservoir and zero brake fluid--anywhere.
Tl the contact owns a 2016 Ford F-150. While driving 60 mph, the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard when it was depressed. The emergency brake was used to slow the vehicle down and the low brake fluid indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to summerville Ford (843-873-3550, located at 9700 dorchester rd, summerville, SC 29485) where it was diagnosed that the master cylinder and brake booster needed to be replaced. The technician stated that there was no recall. The manufacturer was called, but the contact did not speak with anyone. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 31,000. The VIN was not provided.
Driving at 35 mph my truck gives me a brake fluid low error message. I keep driving on to the highway. As I exit the highway I press the brakes and nothing happens. The brakes aren't engaging. I coast to a stop since there's no traffic and pull over. Towed truck to Ford dealership and they tell me master cylinder and brake booster have malfunctioned. Cost of repairs are $2100.
Bought the truck a year and a half ago the engine has blown and now the brake master cylinder is went out probably be the brake booster next they should be reliable for this I'm 100 miles over my warranty and they were still on fix it.
Driving in residential type area, down hill. Break warning came on (40mph). Tried to stop but pedal went to floor. I said to my family to hold on we have no breaks and we're approaching a stoped car making a left. As they were screaming in fear I stepped on the emergency break and down shifted to first. We are lucky I knew what to do. Another family may not be so lucky. The Ford dealer said the master cylinder is leaking through. 2016 Ford F-150 3. 5 ecoboost.
Tl the contact owns a 2016 Ford F-150. While driving on the interstate, the brake warning indicator illuminated. While depressing the brake pedal, the vehicle failed to stop. The contact had to apply the camper brake to reach the next exit. The contact took the vehicle to murdo Ford (219 main st, murdo, sd 57559, (605) 669-2391) where it was diagnosed that the vacuum booster sucked the seal out of the master cylinder and all the fluid went to the booster. The technician added fluid to the brake master cylinder and disconnected the booster. The contact was able to drive the vehicle and later took it to thunder basin Ford (1100 w 2nd st, gillette, wy 82716, (307) 682-4735), but was not diagnosed or repaired due to the length of time it would take for the repair. The vehicle was also taken to jackson Ford of decatur (455 e pershing rd, decatur, IL 62526, (844) 846-7281) where a repair appointment was scheduled. The contact also took the vehicle to rick ridings Ford (1817 ridings dr, monticello, IL 61856, (217) 762-2521) and was informed that there were no recalls. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 32,000.
On July 18, 2019 vehicle (2016 Ford f150 with 51,721 miles) driven under highway conditions experience a 'low brake fluid' warning followed afterwards with complete loss of brakes when attempting to secure the vehicle to a safe condition. Fortunately the driving situation allowed the vehicle to be secured safely. Upon inspecting the vehicle there were no indication of brake fluid loss through broken brake lines or system leakage. Subsequently transported the vehicle to the vehicle our originating Ford dealership, the shop diagnostic result was the 'failure of the master brake cylinder rear cup seal'. Additional damage included the booster pump due to brake fluid contamination. Issues: this is the same failure to which Ford motor previously recalled 2013 - 2014 f150's. At 51k miles, the failure of a master cylinder is premature. During routine maintenance, inspection of the master cylinder does not readily lead to indication of potential failure or need for replacement. This failure could be catastrophic under the right conditions if proper operator control is not followed - lower speed by reducing gearing and using the emergency brakes. The replacements are oem factory parts; possibly the same manufacture as that replaced which could be potential for future failure (this could not be clarified by the Ford shop at the time of the work)! the primary concern of course potential for relapse of the same event. Secondarily is the premature expense of master brake cylinder and booster pump replacement.
Vehicle operating normally until problem noted 7/13/2016. Vehicle purchased used from certified Ford dealership on 5/16/2018. Currently has approximately 44,800 miles on odometer. Vehicle has been parked overnight and upon am startup and backing up suffered complete loss of braking ability when brakes were applied. Low brake reservoir indicator light on. Visual check revealed reservoir level well below minimum mark and level with inlets for the brake lines. Refilled, pumped brakes and able to obtain moderately firm pedal. Started vehicle, let idle few moments, tested brake pedal but found soft pedal again sinks immediately to floor and reservoir light on again. Visual check shows fluid again has emptied as described above. Vehicle had not been moved. A visual trace of all brake lines shows no external leakage along length of the lines nor at any brake component. Fluid is obviously being drawn into the vacuum boost reservoir. Vehicle has not been altered in any way from date of purchase. This is an extreme safety issue with a high probability of loss or life and/or severe injury to passengers and/or collision with other vehicles or objects due to this sudden, total brake failure. This is a catastrophic failure of the master cylinder system that produces a failure of the redundant braking arrangement (I. E. Separate front and rear brake systems). This appears from a quick google search of other complaints to becoming a known problem. Prompt action is urged by NHTSA to initiate a recall to correct these problem for obvious safety reasons.
While slowly pulling out of a drive way the driver applied the brakes but the pedal went to the floor. A mechanic's inspection determined the booster failed causing brake fluid to flow into the master cylinder. With no fluid in the lines there is no stopping ability.
3 miles into my trip with several starts and stops. Low break fluid warning light. Pulled over with working breaks but reservoir was almost empty. Loss of breaks after a couple more stops. Topped off break fluid reservoir. Ran motor 5 min before low fluid warning light, no sign of external leak. Leaking appears to be from master cylinder to vacuum buster. Pulled vacuum line from vacuum buster eliminated the loss of fluid. And was able to limp home with manual breaks.
Master cylinder failed @ 67,675 miles. Filled brake booster with brake fluid. Started vehicle and warning message for low brake fluid appeared on the dash. Had exactly 3 more brake applications before brake pedal went to floor - no brakes.
Tl the contact owns a 2016 Ford F-150. While driving approximately 30 mph, the brakes failed to stop the vehicle when the brake pedal was depressed. Also, low fluid displayed and the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard. The vehicle was cautiously driven to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the brake booster and master cylinder were faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The local dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 68,767.
Complete brake failure. Parked truck and brakes worked normally. 15 minutes later started engine and brake pedal went to the floor. Brake fluid reservoir was empty. No leakage at wheel cylinders or master cylinder. 36,000 miles. No prior warning of low fluid until the failure happened. Towed to local Ford dealer.
Brakes failed and it is related to the brake booster and master cylinder. Have to replace both at a cost of $1500. My understanding is Ford is aware of this issue but has not fixed the problem.
Brakes have failed on my 2016 f150. The master cylinder reservoir has been very low twice in the past 2 weeks. I filled it completely, to full line, twice.
I drove my truck to my farm without incident. After being parked for a while, my son-in-law got in to drive to a work area and immediately reported the brake pedal went to the floor. We checked the brake fluid level and it was almost empty, even though I had recently had the level checked as "full" at a change of oil and filter. It took two large bottles of brake fluid (at over $8. 00 each, just to get it home (about 50 miles). I had to pump the brakes during this trip to get braking action and drive very carefully and slowly. The day before this happened I had towed a single axle trailer with an agricultural disc on it. Had this quick loss of brakes occurred at that time, it likely would have resulted in serious injury, property damage, and even death. The shop where I took it replaced the master cylinder, the power booster, which had filled with fluid, and an O2 sensor, which had been damaged. The total cost was $1194. 34. Since all the parts were replaced with new Ford brand parts, there is a likelihood that it will happen again. This is a real safety issue and merits a recall, as well as reimbursement to me of my expenses.
While on the freeway, a warning message illuminated on the cluster "brake fluid low". Concerned, I checked the braking function a few times slowing from my cruising speed of 78 mph to around 55 mph to test the braking function, and all seemed well. I decided to continue the remaining 15 minutes of my trip since the brakes seemed to be functioning correctly and there was no traffic, as it was 4:30am on a Sunday morning, but I proceeded with caution. When exiting the freeway, I decided to brake early in the event there was a problem, but again the braking felt absolutely normal, not even the slightest hint of any brake loss. I then traveled about 11 miles with the cruise control set to 65 mph, there was no need for stopping or slowing at any point during this stretch. Nearing my turn, I again decided it would be best to remain cautious and brake early. It was at this point that I could tell something was wrong, as the brake pedal had very little stopping power as I pressed the brake pedal completely to the floor, only slowing from 65 mph to about 25 mph over a distance approaching a quarter mile. After this, the brakes were completely out at this point. I have experience with moving trucks with no brakes, using only the emergency brake, so I felt confident continuing the short distance to my home using slow speeds (>15 mph), manually shifting the transmission for engine braking and using the emergency brake. I was able to get the vehicle home with no incident. Inspected brake fluid reservoir, found it was empty but found no sign of a leak. I figured the master cylinder leaked internally, which the dealer confirmed. Both parts needed for repair were on a national back-order, unavailable from Ford. A little search on google reveals this failure is common on 2013-16 F-150. Dealer located parts from other dealers stock, but vehicle was out of service 10 days.
On 7/16/18 at approximately 0400, while on rt 95 s driving at approximately 68 mph, in stamford CT, I applied brakes and brakes failed. Using downshift and e brake I successfully slowed down and took the nearest exit ramp. Brought the vehicle to the nearest Ford dealer. Its reported that the master cylinder failed. Looking on-line there is an apparent issue the 2015, 2016 v6 eco boost models where this failure has occurred. Ford is currently evaluating whether to cover the repairs. This notification is for record purposes as on-line it appears that NHTSA is investigating these failures.
This morning 5/16/2018 at 7:30 am cdt, while taking my 6 year old son to school, my 2016 Ford F-150 produced a "brake fluid low" warning light. The braking system was severely compromised and the pedal had to be depressed to the floor to stop the vehicle. I added 54 oz of brake fluid to get it to a dealership and the warning light continued to appear. As I was driving I had to go into manual mode to downshift to slow the car down so I could brake vehicle to a stop. Full speed braking was impossible. Was able to get to a Ford dealer - they determined that the master cylinder was leaking and that the master cylinder and brake booster have to be replaced. This is consistent with prior model year recalls for this truck and engine type (3. 5l v6 ecoboost). Vehicle has 45k miles and out of warranty for this issue, so out of pocket costs are roughly $1100. Service records will become available tomorrow when the work is complete. I can upload them at that time.
I experienced 100% brake failure on my 2016 Ford f150 3. 5l v6. I started my vehicle apprx 530am on 4/30/18 to drive to work. Upon starting the vehicle a "low brake fluid level" message appeared. I was not immediately sure what to think. I placed the truck in drive and as I rolled down my sloped driveway and pressed on the brake pedal - the brakes went to the floor without any stopping capability. I coasted to a stop without incident. I checked the brake fluid level and it was very low, well below the minimum mark on the reservoir. I had the truck towed to the Ford dealer. Upon research it sounds like this same model truck has been reported to have brake fluid draining to the master cylinder. I do not know for certain what my issue is. I should find out tomorrow when the Ford mechanics can look over the truck.
