Ford F-150 owners have reported 10 problems related to diesel engine (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Ford F-150 based on all problems reported for the F-150.
2018 F-150 with 5. 0 litre v-8 engine has loud and concerning knocking when accelerating. This is especially noticeable when the transmission has recently shifted into a new gear and before engine rpms have climbed back up. When I pulled our boat out of the lake a month or so ago, my gasoline engine sounded like an old diesel engine due to the knock. I have had the vehicle in the shop three times for this issue, and the technicians have confirmed the knock. On the second visit, Ford engineers had the technicians take apart the engine and replace some vct valves. This did not solve the problem. The last time it was in, the Ford engineers had the technicians drive a like model truck (2018 F-150 with 5. 0 litre v-8), and that truck made the same knocking noises. Following that, Ford concluded that this is just "normal operation" of this engine, and there is no concern. I have owned many vehicles, and this is certainly not "normal operation". I contacted Ford coorperate customer care, and they informed me that there is nothing further to be done, and they now consider this issue closed. In addition, a quick search on google shows pages of complaints of this engine knock issue. It's interesting that no previous year models of this 5. 0l v-8 had this problem, but, Ford now considers it normal. Thank you for your time with this issue.

Within a few weeks of purchasing my vehicle in February after pulling into a parking lot the check engine light came on. I also noticed it was making a ticking noise like a diesel engine but it's not a diesel. I went to get the codes and found it was a retarded variable valve timing issue code p0022. I looked online and went to multiple shops and mechanics to figure out the problem. After paying to replace the vct solenoids it was apparent that that was not the issue causing the timing problem. For weeks I noticed the truck shaking and at one point it actually stalled as I was pulling out of a parking lot into a busy road and it stalled as I was going into the road which caused the on coming traffic to slow and stop to avoid hitting me in the middle of the road. After spending weeks in the dealership service shop and a large sum of money they found they needed to replace the engine entirely. I have witnessed this issue happening to many many others online and in person who have the same year range with the 5. 4l 3 valve triton engines. This is absolutely unacceptable for so many vehicle to have the same issue especially when it has under 100,000 miles. It is not only very poor quality for such a large price but also a safety hazard to the owner and others around these vehicles.

The contact owns a 2005 Ford F-150. The contact stated that the vehicle would sound as if it was equipped with a diesel engine. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician diagnosed that the spark plugs, coils, pulley and serpentine belt needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, the remedy failed to correct the failure. The dealer then stated that the camshaft phaser was defective and as a result, the engine would possibly need to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 120,000. Updated 02/11/lj.

The contact owns a 2007 Ford f150. The contact was driving 35 mph and decelerating in an attempt to make a left turn when the vehicle stalled and the brakes became unresponsive. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who performed a diagnostic that located the failure at the cam-shaft position sensor, the crank sensor, the timing solenoids and the valve gasket. The parts were replaced but the repair did not correct failure and the vehicle continued to stall sporadically. In addition, the contact stated that the engine was extremely loud as if it were a diesel engine. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer for further diagnosis. The VIN was not available. The failure and current mileage was 78,000.

2004 f150 5. 4 triton sounds like a diesel engine took to dealer for diagnosis at aprox. 30,000 miles. Dealer stated that this is normal. Engine failed at 98,000 miles due to valve timing issues, related to cam phasers. Thus cam shaft quit rotating allowing pistons to collide with vales causing engine failure. Dealer now wants 7624. 00 to replace engine. The Ford dealership states that they have not seen this type of engine failure. But after reviewing the complaints on this site along with many other web sites related to this issue it seems that fomoco knows that this is a serious issue and they are unwilling to address the issue. What can be done to have fomoco address and compensate for these issues.
First off I want to say that I work for Ford and I am very disappointed that the first of the two issue I have hasn't been recalled and I'm not 100% sure about the dates that these problems occurred on. My truck has sounded like it has a diesel engine in it since I bought it brad new in 2005 and after talking to some guys at work I find out that it is caused by cam phasers that are in the 2004-07 5. 4litre engines and if these fail you have to get a new motor which I was told just a couple of months ago would be $8900. 00 which is absolutely crazy. If you look them up online you will see that this is a huge and costly problem. My second issue is I have had my rearend rebuilt twice since I have owned this vehicle. The first time was before it was out of it 36,000 mile factory warranty, the second time was before it was out of the 100,000 extended warranty that I purchased so luckily those two times did not cost me anything but now it needs it again and the mechanic tell me it could cost $5000 so with the motor issue and the rearend issue I could possibly spend $14,000 in repairs which again is crazy when you spent close to $50,000. 00 on the vehicle to begin with.
At ~ 30,000 miles, the engine (a 5. 4 triton v8) began sounding like a diesel engine. Took the truck to the dealer. The dealer ". . Recalibrated the cam sensor. . . " and stated the sound(s) were normal for this engine. I called Ford motor company and they customer service rep told me same thing. The noise is getting louder indicating the problem is worsening. Is there anything that can be done to correct this issue before the engine suffers a catastrophic failure?.
Constant ticking noise from engine, sounds like a diesel engine, remains ticking the entire time. / when applying brakes either on a hard stop or rolling over traction in road, grinding feeling in pedal and noise and will not stop immediately. -----was told by dealership that the "ticking" was typical for Ford and the brakes was part of the antilock system, I do not think so.
Spark plug blew out of cylinder on my triton 5. 4l Ford f150 lightning truck. 900 miles after warranty expired. Ford dealer quoted $3,100 to replace cylinder head with a 50% goodwill discount. In my searches on the web this is a very common problem. Very common on their v10 diesel engines Ford does not acknowledge that a defect exists.

Rear window has a leak on the passenger side of the sliding window that has been sent back to the shop several time for repairs. Its on oing ! the window has been replaced w/ frame three times , but the truck has been in shop several times prior to and after the windows have been replaced. It would last a short time and would then start leaking all over again. ** presently still leaking **. # 2 . Engine has a knock during start up. Sounds more like a diesel ! both issues have been present since 14,000 miles or so. This truck has had several problems. To mention a few ; rear bumper rusting out, door & shift nobs breaking , body paint peeling, rattle in floor gear shift ( still present ), ** now the air conditioning is not working **. I like the truck, but would rather have one with out all the problems !.
