6 Differential Unit problem of the 2017 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 01/15/2021

Vehicle makes vibration style noise from the rear right side during speeds of 40-50 mph with minimal acceleration and/or during low rpms. Vehicle was taken to 2 different dealership service shops on 4 occasions during the warranty period who all claimed it was a normal sound. Researching online during that time was pointing to potential misalignment in the rear-differential during manufacturing. Condition can be replicated during driving conditions, between speeds of 40-50mph, light application of gas pedal and during low rpms. Condition existed from time of purchase through present day.

8 Differential Unit problem of the 2019 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 01/10/2020

Brand new truck experiencing rough downshifting while approaching normal stops. Also upon beginning acceleration, gears may seem to slip and rev, similar to clutch being applied and engine revving, then catches a gear and lurches forward. On numerous occasions at end of backing up and shifting to drive, felt and heard a loud clunk in rear differential area. Never had a vehicle do any of this. Called Ford service and he said, you've never had a 10 speed transmission, have you. Of course not, it is new technology.

9 Differential Unit problem of the 2016 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 09/17/2019

While driving straight ahead at a steady 35 mph on a 2% downgrade, small city, double lane, one-way, debris free street, the automatic transmission shifted abruptly from 4th gear to 1st gear. I did not make any gear shift lever changes nor did I change any options such as pushing the sport mode, tow mode, locking differential, hill descent or traction control buttons. I was seated confortably, both hands on the steering wheel, seat belt fully engaged with no in-vehicle distractions such as a phone or radio tuning. The engine immediately raced to 6400 rpm causing the rear wheels to start a skid even though the road surface was dry and free of any debris. After approximately 4 seconds I realized that the transmission had forceably, on its own, shifted into 1st gear, so I put the transmission into neutral. The dash mounted gear indicator showed 4th gear during this altercation which made it harder to know what was going on until I shifted to neutral. Although it took another 5 seconds for the transmission to respond fully to this input, it finally went into neutral. Shortly thereafter the rear wheels went into coast mode. I was able to narrowly avoid colliding with the vehicles in the left lane because of my quick corrective action of putting the transmission gear selector into neutral. I've not had this dangerous self-shifting transmission to 1st gear at highway speed occur but the one time on September 19, 2019, but it does still concern me. My truck had approximately odometer 32,000 miles at the time of this occurance. I bought the truck new with 16 miles and have not modified or poured any additives into the transmission. My truck has not been abused or towed. I sincerely hope this doesn't happen to any aother 2016 f150 truck owners, but perhaps, unfortunately it may have. I also hope this helps in maybe finding a fix should there need to be one.

10 Differential Unit problem of the 2017 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 09/06/2019

My new F-150 front differential leaks. When trying to slow down vehicle I can hear knock sound and around front axle and sudden decelerate.

11 Differential Unit problem of the 2012 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 07/13/2019

I was casually driving on the highway just outside of atlanta when all of a sudden I felt a jolt in the rear end and my advanced traction control turned on and stated that there was a problem. I pulled over and called a tow truck to take it to the Ford dealership for service. The dealership advised me that somehow my rear axle differential had snapped on the rear driver side. They stated that usually they see that in high lifted trucks or with towing something heavy. My truck is standard lift and I do not tow any trailers and I am thinking it could possibly have been a factory defect as my truck is still pretty young and has only 114000 miles.

13 Differential Unit problem of the 2017 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 01/24/2019

On 01-24-2019, I stopped at a red light and noticed an odor coming from my 2017 Ford F-150 truck and saw some smoke coming from under the hood. A motorist next to me pointed to the bottom of the truck; I rolled down the window and he said he thought there was a fire under the truck. I pulled over, shut off the truck, saw a small fire on the frame under the engine. The other motorist put it out with a fire extinguisher. A state police officer called the fire dept. Who further extinguished the smoldering. The vehicle was towed. My insurance company sent an adjuster who concluded that the fire was caused by a failed pinon seal in the differential, which is part of the power train. The legal department of Ford motor CO. (office of general counsel) stated that the fire occurred because the vehicle was driven on pavement in 4wd. I assert that this is not true and is a tactic of Ford motor CO. To avoid honoring their product warranty or taking responsibility for a potential safety hazard.

14 Differential Unit problem of the 2016 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 05/17/2018

At 15000 miles the front differential bearings began to fail and contaminated the entire front differential. The differential had to be completely replaced. This could have failed on the road leaving me stranded. This was while driving on normal city streets and the highway.

15 Differential Unit problem of the 2015 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 02/28/2018

The front differential needs to be rebuilt. Possible failure due to failed bearing seals. Causing noise that will lead to bearing, axle failure. When I described the problem everyone knew exactly what the problem was. I asked if it was a recall they said no. It really needed to be fixed and would be around $1000. 00. . I was very surprised they "everyone" knew except for me!! seems like if it is "most" or "all" then Ford to tell customers. Front differential fails at 55 mph that is going to be a big problem for someone!!.

16 Differential Unit problem of the 2011 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 12/27/2017

Driving on highway at 70-75 mph, transmission self-shifted from 6th gear to 3rd gear. Damaged the transmission and differential, both requiring repair. Vehicle was difficult to control whe downshift occurred. Could have caused collision.

17 Differential Unit problem of the 2004 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 05/04/2017

The whole vehicle vibrates and shudders at highway speed with now warning. It now feels as if the rear axle in moving, give an odd sensation when applying the gas pedal or taking your foot off the gas pedal. I am a technician by trade, so I put the truck up on the lift at my shop and have noticed the pinion in the rear differential has significant up and down movement. After researching a bit, it seems the pinion and ring gear gall themselves, I'm not sure if the pinion bearing failed causing this. Or if the ring and pinion failed causing the bearing to fail. At any rate there seems to be a lot of individuals with my experience, a quick search online may provide a scope of the issue.

18 Differential Unit problem of the 2017 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 05/01/2017

Tl the contact owns a 2017 Ford F-150. The contact stated that the vehicle drifted to the left and right while driving. The vehicle was taken to sheehy Ford Lincoln of richmond (10601 midlothian turnpike, richmond, va 23235, (804) 293-2212) to be diagnosed and the electronic power steering assist codes were located. The dealer replaced the steering gear and the entire steering column. Also, during another visit, all four tires were replaced and three alignments were performed between dealer visits. The contact took the vehicle back to the dealer due to a rear differential failure. The contact stated that the dealer was reluctantly checking the steering again. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 4,000.

19 Differential Unit problem of the 2004 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 01/24/2017

80, 000 miles on the truck, and it now needs its rear differential replaced for the 6th time. On top of that , now the cam phasers are going bad. Can't drive it now again as it may leave me stranded in an intersection again. I drive 7 miles each way to work, and occasionally use the truck for vacations.

20 Differential Unit problem of the 2004 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 03/05/2016

112,000 and sent the truck in for a humming noise . The whole rear end needed to be replaced. The truck has had only highway driving with no off roading. Differential oil replaced every year.

21 Differential Unit problem of the 2010 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 09/05/2015

At highway cruising speed, with the cruise control on, the truck spontaneously locked up the wheels and went into an uncontrollable skid off the interstate highway into the ditch and up the embankment. The Ford dealership which fixed it found a computer error code p0975, and therefore replaced Ford part number 9l3z7a100c:control assembly-transmission. No braking system problems, and no rear end differential problems were found. The truck was drivable after the accident. If the truck had rolled or struck an obstacle, fatalities could have resulted.

The rear differential acts up and prevents the truck from accelerating properly. Stutters all of the time and has a mild misfire and what sounds like knocking.

23 Differential Unit problem of the 2012 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 11/03/2014

Differential lock activates by it's self. Light comes on instrument panel showing rear axle locked. Rear axle locks up at speeds below 20 mph. If stopped at a light or sign your rear wheels will drag as if the brakes are being applied. It can happen at any time. If going over 20 mph some times the instrument panel message center lights up and says you have to slow down below 20 mph to apply rear differential lock. Happens mostly in 2wd. This has happened for over 6,000 miles. Can be on dry pavement or rough surface. Have noticed that the 4wd mode switch on dash will seem loose and the knob will pull out if you hit a rough road surface. I have replaced the mode switch at my expense (1) time at my expense p/n cl3z-14b166-ea. Dealer and Ford still trying to figure out problem. This causes vehicle to loose communications with obd circuit and several other modules. Not allowing system to download codes or to update parameters.

24 Differential Unit problem of the 2011 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 10/15/2014

My 2011 f150 4x4 rear end limited slip differential appears to be locked up. At about 20,000 miles my gas milage dropped from 18. 4 to 17. 1 and a whining noise is now present from the rear differential. Also you can hear the rear tires skip during slow turns at corners or in parking lots.

25 Differential Unit problem of the 2006 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 09/04/2014

The contact owns a 2006 Ford F-150. While making a turn at an unknown speed, the vehicle began to shake violently. The dealer stated that the rear differential fluid needed to be refilled. The fluid was replenished, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The technician stated that the rear differential needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 110,678.

26 Differential Unit problem of the 2004 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 05/02/2014

My rear end differential - axle went out and it's making a noise and feels like my rear end is lose when I drive down the highway almost feels unsafe but it is too pricy to fix I feel I should be something Ford should fix or recall.

27 Differential Unit problem of the 2004 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 05/01/2014

Malfunctioning differential- when starting from a stopped position, (especially from a turn) vibrations occur and posses a risk of a potential failure when pulling into oncoming traffic.

28 Differential Unit problem of the 2004 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 01/15/2014

This is a recurrence, paid for it the 1st time. After driving a few miles and coming to a stop the rear differential chatters really bad until the vehicle has finished cornering.

29 Differential Unit problem of the 2004 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 04/10/2013

While starting from a dead stop noticed a rumbling sound coming from the rear end. I had the rear differential fluid replaced, u-joints checked, and brakes inspected. (have had this done 3 times in the last 18 months at a cost of several hundred dollars)I mentioned this problem during a casual conversation with a friend who happened to be a retired Ford mechanic. He told me that while he was with Ford as a mechanic he replaced or rebuilt numerous rear slip differentials, and that it was a major problem especially with the 2004 F-150, and that I should investigate it further. I went on-line and found many many complaints about the 2004 F-150 regarding rear slip differential \with very expensive repair problems. Obviously Ford has known about this problem for a very long time, and has done nothing about except to offer lame excuses and charge exorbitant prices for repairs. I am concerned about the rear end locking up at highway speed and causing a fatal accident. Why hasn't a recall been required?.

30 Differential Unit problem of the 2004 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 02/22/2012

The clutch pack in the driven train rear differentials lock up when turning corners and howls when going down the road. These failures are so common on Ford truck that Ford is now adding friction modifiers to the rear differentials to rear the problem and aftermarket suppliers are making replacements for the clutch pack like detroit locker to eliminate the problem. This lock up on winter surfaces cause the wheels to loose traction increasing the potential for accidents. The howling sound is also a drag on the drive train components, reducing mpg and capability of the vehicle to handle adverse conditions. Ford has known about this problem for several years and has done nothing to fix the problem or reimburse owners for the cost of repair. On my truck, total rear end repair costs have exceeded $3700.

31 Differential Unit problem of the 2004 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 01/02/2012

Transmission failed and was replaced. Rear differential needs to be replaced.

32 Differential Unit problem of the 2004 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 06/01/2011

The rear differential is making a chattering noise at low speeds. It has a posi-trac rear differential, and I can feel a 'stop and go' type action as I am driving in a straight line at low speeds. Even after I added a limited slip additive, the problem is still there. It tends to be worse after a cold start, and when I am going up hills of after I go over a speed bump.

33 Differential Unit problem of the 2004 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 05/02/2011

2004 Ford f150. Consumer states problem with rear differential the consumer stated in 2006 the transmission had to be replaced.

34 Differential Unit problem of the 2008 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 03/02/2011

On Wednesday, March 2, 2011 the front differential on my 2008 Ford f150 truck blew apart while backing up on a residential street in nashua, nh. There was a loud noise and the truck slammed to a stop. The truck was towed to best Ford on amherst st. , nashua, nh. Apparently a rod broke in half and ricocheted in the housing damaging the gear shaft and slicing a gash in the differential cap. I was on a quiet street with little traffic. Had this occurred on a busy street or highway, it would have most likely resulted in an accident. I have taken photographs of the damaged parts if they are needed.
