39 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2002 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 06/06/2010

On a 2002 Ford F-150 harley davidson edition truck, the # 2 spark plug was ejected from the engine while driving 65 mph, causing my vehicle to slow down, and the gasoline and exhaust fumes were filing the drivers compartment. This is the second truck I have owned previous a (2003 same vehicle model) where the sparkplug has been ejected from the engine while driving. Why is there no recall or study on this problem from Ford?? engine still had original plugs from factory!! their torque specs!!.

40 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2001 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 06/05/2010

The contact owns a 2001 Ford F-150. The contact started the ignition and light grey smoke emitted from the exhaust. The failure was intermittent and became progressively worse. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer three times for the identical failure. The catalytic converter and engine heat control sensor were replaced at the owner's expense. The failure continued after the repair was performed on the vehicle. The failure mileage was 118,042.

41 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1998 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 05/26/2010

# 5 spark plug blew out of my 1998 Ford F-150 5. 4 ltr engine. Returning home from alabama. I had just gotten through charlotte, nc when I heard the sound of a very bad exhaust leak. When I stopped and lifted the hood I could see the coil pack bouncing up and down. I had to pay a tow truck operator $420. 00 to tow me home. Took my truck to the local Ford dealer for repairs just to find out that this problem is very common with the 5. 4. It will cost about $300. 00 or more to repair with a heli coil. (that's if it is repairable with a heli coil). Have not gotten the final bill yet. Also, forgot to mention that the plugs where replaced in November 2009 by the carlot garage which I purchased the truck from.

43 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2008 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 08/26/2009

My 2008 Ford f150 was sitting in my drive way until I had to leave to go run errands. I got in it, turned the key and there was fire coming out of the exhaust pipe. I think it stared in the engine because of how hot it was minutes after I turned the key. Please let people know about this. I do not want to see people being harmed by this. Im positive that if I hadn't turned it off as quickly as I did the engine would have caught fire and the truck would have been ruined, throwing away all the money that I bought it for. And wasting all the time that I cud have used the truck for hauling and road trips. Thank you.

45 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2006 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 07/20/2009

I reported my catalytic converters went bad to richmond Ford llc. I have a 2006 Ford F-150 XLT with 44,000 miles. The service manager informed me that the 3 year, 36,000 mile factory warranty was past. It was during a routine state inspection my mechanic found the issue. I again called my mechanic. He informed that there is an 8 year 80,000 mile federal emissions warranty. I again called richmond Ford llc. Spoke with the service manager, he told me that there was no such warranty. I had to take my truck to a local exhaust specialist. It took a week and over $2000 to repair my truck. I called Ford motor companies customer care line. They informed me there was a federal emissions warranty and it was for 8 years or 80,000 miles. Now I am out $2000 and I am fighting with Ford to recover my expenses, lost time from work with no success can you assist or provide me with any contact information to assist me in this matter. Your assistance would be greatly welcome. Thanks, brian m dougherty.

47 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1998 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 02/01/2009

The exhaust header bolts on my 1998 f150 pickup rusted and failed. To replace these $2 studs, a lengthy repair is required where the heads have to be removed from the vehicle and the studs that have broken flush with the aluminum heads have to be drilled out. An internet search on this problem indicated that thousands of Ford vehicles with the 5. 4 engine and aluminum heads are affected. The exhaust leak fumes come into the vehicle and are a potential source of fire. I have read reports of repair bills reaching $2000. I'm collecting information on how to repair this myself as I do not have $2000 to give to the dealer. This is a design failure that should have triggered a recall.

48 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2001 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 01/25/2009

I have a Ford F-150 2001 with triton 5. 4 v8 I started my truck and heard a loud pop and then what sounded like a very bad exhaust leak. Come to find out the back sparkplug on passenger side blew out. I had to have a new coil new plug and helicoil installed.

49 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1997 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 01/10/2009

My 1997 F-150 4. 2l v6 with 128,000 miles started experiencing an unaccountable for water loss that quickly turned into a rough idle on cold starts and then very noticeable steam from the exhaust at what time it was taken in for repair with a suspected blown head gasket. Dismantling the engine, there was water in the top end but there is no indication of head gasket failure and the heads have been pressure tested for leaks and turned out ok. It appears that the intake or intake gasket is the problem and upon online research it was discovered that Ford has had prior complaints of intake and gasket failures.

50 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2006 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 07/10/2008

I was driving my 06 Ford truck 4. 6 engine on freeway motor failed, loud noise coming from motor and loose of power. I was nearly involved in major collision trying to get truck off the freeway. 51 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2001 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 05/18/2008

In January I had driven my f150 to the store, when I returned to it in the parking lot and started it I heard a loud pop from under the hood. This sound was followed by a loud backfiring sound upon adding a few rpm's to the engine. I shut it off to inspect and discovered the far rear spark plug had been shot clear out of the head and was lying loose inside the engine compartment. The spark plug and the head each had enough threads left for the plug to reset. The coil was damaged and needed to be replaced. Three days ago (5/18/08) I started the vehicle again heard the same pop and the same backfire sound. Upon inspection this time I found that although the plug had not come out of the head this time it was clearly loose. There are no longer usable threads on either the head or the plug and I have been quoted $2500 (discounted rate) to repair a vehicle that has only 78000 miles on it and that I owe $16000 and can't even trade in now. I have done extensive research and have found that this is a very common complaint with the Ford tritan v8 engine and that Ford has not chosen to remedy this defect.

52 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2002 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 05/12/2008

My 2002 Ford F-150 extended cab 5. 4litre pickup blew a spark plug out of the number 3 cylinder. I called the local dealer to inquire as to the price of replacing an exhaust gasket as this is what the noise sounded like. The service adviser after hearing the make model and size engine and year of the truck said, "no you did not blow the exhaust gasket, you blew a spark plug out of the head". I was astounded as to how he could make a diagnosis of this type as I had never even heard of such an occurrence. The cost would be a minimum of $850. 00. After going on the internet this seems to be a prevalent problem.

53 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2003 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 05/09/2008

While driving home from work my wife had a spark plug blow out of the engine, fortunately the 2003 Ford f150 supercrew pickup truck didn't catch on fire, I drove the vehicle another 15 miles to the mechanic not knowing what is wrong , I thought the it was just a bad exhaust leak but I found out the next morning the grim news that in fact the spark plug was the problem, I was told the repair would run between 700. 00 to 2,000. 00, shocked by the cost of repair and the problem of which I have never heard of I went online to check it out. To my surprise I found this is a major problem with the Ford triton engines, so I thought Ford would do the right thing I called Ford and explained my problem, only to be told that it was my problem and Ford wouldn't do anything for me. I know I'm not the only person that has had this problem, in fact if you do any research online you will see that hundreds and perhaps thousands of people have had this problem, I would hope that maybe you can help me and the other people that have had this problem, thanks in advance tim walsh.

54 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1998 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 04/26/2008

A spark plug popped out of the block in my 1998 triton 5. 4 F-150. This is the first time it's happened and hopefully the last. Looking it the problem online I've realized it's a common occurrence. My wife and two kids were in this vehicle and with a hole in the block shooting out unburned gas to the live spark plug it could have been a real problem. This problem needs to be addressed in the form of a recall, if nothing else to inspect and if the problem does exist, fix it. Would an inspection really find the defect though? from what I've read it pretty much happens all at one because there is only four threads holding these plugs into the block. Hopefully the problem does get addressed sooner than later, it's never to soon to correct a problem dealing with the safety of human life.

55 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2003 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 04/11/2008

2003 f150 4,2 engine, upper and lower intake manifold gaskets failure, started leaking at 75,200 miles.

56 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2005 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 01/07/2008

2005 Ford F-150 5. 4l triton had 2 blown spark plugs. First one happened at 80,000 miles, second at 130,000. The first time it destroyed the exhaust manifold and cost $3000 to repair. The second time this happened it blew the left side exhaust and the coil pack. This cost about $1500 to repair.

57 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2006 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 01/03/2008

Emissions light displays: 2006 f150 looses power, will not accelerate, stalls while driving in traffic (creating a traffic hazard), pops (backfires) while trying to accelerate. Have to totally stop truck, turn off ignition, wait a few minutes, restart and proceed. Sometimes have to repeat this several times while driving to destination. Had truck hooked to diagnostic computer, mechanic said there "was" a problem, but it cleared itself. . . . Charged me for computer use. He said to come back in when truck was "misbehaving" again. It does it sporadically, explained this to mechanic. Emissions light comes on and goes out sporadically as well.

58 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1998 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 10/20/2007

1998 Ford f150- 66,000mi. Developed a serious oil leak from the head. I have found out that this is common and Ford is well aware of it's recurrence. Besides costing $2000. 00 to repair, it is leaking heavily onto an exhaust pipe causing smoke and potential fire.

61 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2006 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 05/26/2007

I own a 2006 Ford F-150 supercrew 4x4. It has about 90,000 miles on it. My motor has knocked since purchasing the vehicle. I have taken it to the dealership several times to try and correct the problem. It has a 5. 4 l engine in it. I have had the plugs replaced which cost me 800 dollars due to the mechanics breaking two plugs and I had to pay them to fix the problem. My issue, is there a problem with the motor knocking/tapping when idling. If so how can it be fixed. The dealership is not help.

62 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2001 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 04/13/2007

A spark plug blew out of my Ford F-150. Did not know until recently that this problem occurs a lot in Ford truck motors. Engine does not really run now because it would probably catch on fire from exhaust flames. I do not know what I have to do to get the problem fixed, but after reading multiple complaints, I am led to believe I will be paying roughly $5,000 to get the problem fixed.

63 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2006 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 11/18/2006

A few days later the engine light came on again and this time it was the catalytic converter, which had to be replaced. When they said the other catalytic converter needed to be replaced. Had this truck in the shop 6 times for engine light.

64 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2002 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 10/10/2006

Vehicle was always maintained correctly, while driving at approximately 25-30 miles per hour, there was a sudden popping noise, vehicle lost power which startled the driver and caused the vehicle to crash off the road. Vehicle was returned to the road and brought to a parking lot. Next day the vehicle was towed to mechanic and it was discovered that the spark plug was blown from the aluminum head. Mechanic tapped the head and owner was forced to spend $600 dollars, or replace entire head for $3500. Minor vehicle damage due to accident, if this occurred at higher speed unknown what could have happened. Pregnant woman in the vehicle who was extremely scared due to noises and exhaust blowing into cabin of 02 f150 v8.

65 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2002 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 08/02/2006

I own a 2002 Ford f 150 lightning with 45, 234 miles on it. My vehicle experienced some engine failure due to a spark plug shooting out of engine head. I believe it was the 3rd cylinder that failed. I was climbing onto a off ramp and just starting to accelerate when I heard this popping sound coming from the engine. I was accelerating normally when just like that the spark plug shot out. I bought the truck pre owned with 27,000 miles so I never thought to buy additional engine coverage. The truck was in good enough condition for the dealer to grant me a 5 year loan though. Anyway I checked underneath the hood and saw the broken spark plug coil and the spark plug with ripped threads. I had the lightning towed to my how where it still sits. At this point in time I am making $466. 46 monthly payments on a vehicle that I am unable to drive. I called Ford about my problem and got nowhere b/c they said I was beyond the 30,000 mile warranty or the 3 year warranty. Ford gave me an estimate to fix the damaged head for 3,600 hundred and 5,400 to do both. Now from what I understand the 2003 Ford lightnings do not experience spark plug issues b/c the engine were built with updated heads. That right there says that Ford realizes that these trucks are defective to some degree. I am very frustrated in this matter b/c I spent 29,000 out of pocket for this truck and I can't even drive it. Now I have to spend almost 6,000 to get it to driving condition. Like 29,000 isn't enough money already? I work very hard in life to buy this truck I cant just pull that kind of money out just like that. If I have to join a class action law suit so be it. But all I am asking for is my Ford F-150 lightning back I missed my truck.

66 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1998 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 07/29/2006

1) rough idle, white smoke from exhaust pipe, failure of both catalytic converters, unexplained loss of engine coolant. 2) hydro-locked engine, un-repairable engine damage. 3) quoted $3500 for rebuilt engine, no action yet taken.

67 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1997 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 07/24/2006

Manifold studs rusted away causing exhaust pipe to separate from manifolds. As a result of this failure, emissions portion of nys inspection was failed. Repair is required to pass inspection, and is estimated by new country Ford to be approximately $2200. 00. I believe this to be an excessive expense as a result of the manufacturers poor design and quality of parts.

68 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1999 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 07/17/2006

The contact owns a 1999 Ford f150. In between oil changes, the head gasket leaks oil onto the motor and causes it to smoke. As a result, oil gets beneath the motor and into the exhaust, which could cause a fire. The vehicle is also smoking. The Ford dealer recommended that the contact keep the vehicle parked. Nhtsa campaign id number 98v194000 (fuel system, gasoline:fuel injection system) was referenced. The current mileage was 135,000 and failure mileage was less than 100,000. Update 09/10/08 updated 09/16/08.

69 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2006 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 07/08/2006

Truck ran rough with have smoke from exhaust. Took truck in at 41,000 to fix a bad coil assembly, then at 99,000 to fix a bad coil assembly, injector and O2 sensor. At 111,000 miles two more injectors went bad causing two rods to be bent along with another bad O2 sensor. Same problem as the 2005 Ford that had a recall, but not the 2006. Total estimate to fix truck $7500 plus tax! Ford knows about problem but wont recall.

70 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1997 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 05/17/2006

I have a Ford f150 v6 4. 2 with a blown engine. I started it one morning to a loud knocking and smoke from the exhaust. I understand this has been a frequent problem that Ford refuses to take responsibility for. My truck has 81,000 miles on it.
