Purchased a 1997 Ford F-150 in early spring of 2006. Vehicle had less than or close to 100,000 miles. Drove the vehicle between 1,000 and 2,000 miles over the next year. In late March or early April of this year the vehicle's engine, a 4. 2 l 6 cylinder motor self destructs. On the morning in question, I went out and attempted to start the vehicle. The motor turned over very sluggishly as if the battery was low. When the motor started, it made a terrible racket and blew a chunk of the engine block out approximately the size of my thumb. After this happened, I researched the problem on the internet only to find that 1997 4. 2 l Ford motors have a defective gasket which allows water to flow into the cylinders. The gasket had failed and allowed water to leak into the cylinder(s) overnight causing the vehicle to hydrolock and "blow up". Ford has been aware of this problem for many years, and even sent out numerous technical service bulletins regarding the problem. I have even found evidence that they may sent out a few recall notices, but not to every owner. Hundreds of '97 F-150 owners have had this same problem, and they, like me, cannot afford to pay the approximately $5,000 to repair their mistake. I currently owe about $5,000 on this vehicle, which at this time is only an expensive lawn ornament. Fortunately, there was not fire or injuries when this occurred, but they could have. I'm certain that Ford never replaced the gasket on this vehicle, as the only recall "sticker" is one for the engine computer. As for being too old to be recalled, several months after I purchased the vehicle, I received a recall notice for a wiring problem on it. Certainly Ford should issue a recall, or at least pay to have the problem fixed. The incident date is only approximate, as I cannot recall the exact day that it happened.
"condensation" in the engine block. After finding water in the oil of my vehicle, a 2004 Ford f150 with the 5. 4 liter engine, I took it to the dealership for head/head gasket repair assuming the water was antifreeze coming from a failed head gasket. The mechanic at the dealership identified the water in the oil and told me that this comes from condensation in the engine block and that it is a normal condition in all f150s with the 5. 4 liter engine. I don't know if this means only those built after 2004, or all. Water in any engine is not a good thing as it causes corrosion, breaks down lubrication, etcetera. Potential failure would be that the engine could prematurely/unexpectedly fail, stranding the driver and having a huge cost implication for the owner who would likely have to have a remanufactured engine installed at their own cost since the failure is likely to occur after the 3 year/36000 mile warranty has expired. Nothing at all was done to correct this defect.

F150 Ford right side upper head gasket failure.
Engine hard to start, smoked after it did, gasket failure cylinder filled with coolant causing connecting rod to bend or break. Engine needs to be replaced.
My 1997 4. 2l v6 f150 would not start, replaced starter motor, pulled plugs found coolant in #1 cylinder. I'm currently digging into the engine to replace the head gasket.

Engine failure 4. 2 f150 1997. 110,000 miles front gasket replaced recall. No lost of coolant until now. Morning engine missed for 15-20 seconds for several days prior to failure. Day of failure engine turned a small amount and would not move by starter. Allowed to set and started later and when started it sounded like it was coming apart. All lubricants changed regular with synthetics. Apparently a rod broke when coolant ran into cylinder and starting cause the rod to bend and starting later caused the bend to break.
2000 Ford F-150 4. 2l v6 head gasket failure. My vehicle began overheating and smoking white smoke about 2 weeks ago. Also noticed that heater would only put out cool air, unless the engine started to overheat. Ended up needing a new head gasket, which come to find out are notorious on the 4. 2l v6 motors. I caught it before any motor damage was done so no added expenses were needed. However it still was not a cheap fix. I know of at least a hundred 4. 2l v6 F-150 owners who have had this problem and most would be willing to help further an investigation. I do still have the old gasket if needed.
I have a 97 Ford f150. They are known to have gasket failure. I am on my 3rd motor in it. They dont make it 100,000 mile. You just start them @ they will blow.
: the contact stated the engine was leaking oil. The vehicle was taken to the service dealer who determined the engine's head gasket had a small chip causing an oil leak. To remedy the problem, the service dealer recommended a new head gasket to replace the defective one.
Catatrophic engine failure at 52000 miles. Ford dealership admitted there was a problem similar to 3. 8l engine TSB notice. On disassembly by professional garage they indicated head gasket failure as causing the connecting rod bearing to fail, (similar to 3. 8l failures).
Gasket failure caused water to leak into the engine. This caused the cylinder rod to knock and the engine to fail. Must replace the engine as a result.
I started up my 1997 Ford F-150 xl with a 4. 2l v-6 after work one day to hear a loud knocking. I observed that my coolant level was low however there was no milky look to the engine oil. I ran a compression test on my engine to find that there was no compression on cylinder 1 indicating the connecting rod had broken. I am aware that Ford has issued a TSB for a gasket failure however it has expired.
While driving the vehicle shut down and would not restart. It was later determined that the head gasket failed which leaked anti freeze and caused the engine to seize.
The head gasket failed. Oil leaked again out of the right rear cylinder head. Scc.

Second time in to dealer for the same head gasket failure, 1'st at 24,500 mi 2'nd at 26700. Dealer is trying to resolve the problem, but how many more times must I take it back for a problem Ford is aware of.
Gasket failed caused piston rod to bend, engine rebuild cost over $1500. I contacted Ford, they said there were no recalls and they never had that problem before.
The front cover seals and intake gaskets failed causing anti freeze to leak into the oil.

The head gasket on my "97" Ford f150 failed while my wife was driving filling #4 cylinder with coolant and bending a rod. No warning, no overheating, water in the oil, etc. Only a flickering check engine light. My mechanic says it was simply a factory defective gasket and should not have blown considering mileage and up keep and maintenance done to this vehicle. After a little research on the internet I am finding this is not an isolated incident and that Ford has had more than a few gasket failures with this engine. **dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut over to artemis**770846.
Leaks oil, replaced oil pan gasket at approx. 15000 miles and again at 33210 miles.
