Vehicle will not start when parked on a decline of approximately 8% and fuel level below 1/4 of tank or less than 100 miles on fuel warning indicator. Low fuel warning light comes on and vehicle will not start until on level ground. I am not comfortable traveling off-road or in mountains if fuel level is below 1/4 tank as this issue may cause vehicle to stall resulting in an accident or being stranded.

My 2003 f150 had the straps holding the gas tank snapped while traveling down the interstate at 65 mph, I could see flames on the road from the fuel leaking when the tank hit the highway. Once I stopped the truck, I found the gas tank had fallen off and was dragging the ground leaking fuel everywhere, I had 20 gallons of fuel leak out so I had to call the bristol, va fire dept. To come clean up the fuel spill, there was no damage to the truck other than the fuel tank and the straps that I know of needing to be replaced. The local Ford dealer tells me that Ford has a recall on this in areas of the country, but not in virginia. The Ford recall says it is only in areas that use road sale (high corrosion) areas such as kentucky and west virginia, I live in virginia near the kentucky boarder ( within 20 miles) I feel the recall needs to be expanded to virginia the Ford dealer told me they have seen other issues like this in their shop. This recall needs to be expanded quickly I was blessed that the sparks from the tank dragging the ground did not result in an explosion and fire that could have led to serious injury or possibly my death or even someone else being injured this is a huge issue that needs to be addressed.

the consumer stated the gas tank detached from the vehicle due to the straps securing the tank to the body broke due to rust. When the gas tank detached, it fell on top of the vehicle's skid plate which saved it from hitting the ground. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where they replaced the straps. However, they did not remove and inspect the tank. They removed the skid plate while holding the tank in place and then replaced the straps. The repair was completed. However, when the consumer put the fuel in the vehicle, fuel started leaking immediately. The consumer was informed by Ford, the recall did not cover holes in tanks caused by defective straps unless the tank fell completely out of the truck and hit the ground. The consumer replaced the gas tank at his expense. Updated 05/30/12.

After replacement of the fuel tank straps per campaign number 11v385000, I found that when I was refueling the gasoline was pouring out from under the car at about 1. 5 gallons. Went back to the dealer because I the problem wasn't present till the straps were replaced. I was told I needed a new fuel filler neck which was not covered by the original recall, so I went to private shop for a less expensive repair. Upon inspection in replacing the fuel filler neck, my mechanic notified me that I also needed a new gas tank because of corrosion of both the filler neck and the tank. This tank strap recall cost me more in parts and labor than the straps alone cost Ford. Would I have been better off letting the tank drop and catch on fire in my fully covered 1997 vehicle? the insurance money alone would've gotten me a better vehicle, but I love my truck! hoping enough complaints will initiate and investigation and recall so I can get my reimbursement. For now, I will hold onto the old tank and all the parts in case I need proof of problem.
