The contact owns a 2001 Ford F-250 sd. The contact stated that while driving 60 mph, he attempted to activate the cruise control but it would not engage. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer for inspection where they advised the contact that brake fluid was leaking from the cruise control switch and the switch would need to be replaced. While towing a 10,000 pound 5th wheel trailer I needed to speed up to merge into the left lane. The truck was on cruise control set at 50 mph. I stepped down and entered passing gear. After the merge I let off the throttle but the truck continued to accelerate in passing gear. I stepped on the brakes but the cruise control would not release and the truck continued to accelerate. I tried repeatedly to disengage the cruise using the brakes. I then pressed the cruise control "off" button repeatedly to no avail. At this point I pressed and held the brake pedal as hard as I could while the diesel engine continued to race at max power. I was able to slow to about 30 mph before the engine started to overcome the fading brakes. At this point I turned the key off and coasted to a stop. I tried to restart the engine twice and it immediately started at max throttle and I immediately turned the key off. I called Ford for a tow. After about 20 minutes I tried to restart the engine and it started normally so I cancelled the tow. The truck seems to be working normally and cruise also works normally. I haven't tried to enter passing gear while in cruise and won't as this incident almost cause me to have a catastrophic accident. I plan to take the truck to the dealer to be analyzed. This was a major safety problem and could easily have caused a fatal accident.

Vehicle was parked in my garage and at 2:30 am smoke alarms went off and smoke was coming out of garage and my house burned down. Fire investigator told me was from faulty cruise control switch on Ford f250.
The contact owns a 1996 Ford F-250 diesel. The contact stated that while driving, an odor of burning plastic burning was emitted into the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who diagnosed that the cruise control burned a hole in the brake fluid reservoir. As a result, the cruise control lines and the brake fluid needed to be replaced. In addition, the brakes were not responding properly. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the brake booster needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 183,628 and the current mileage was 186,000.

July 7, 2011, my 2001 Ford f250 diesel, cought on fire while my truck was in driveway. I was able to put fire out but my truck was rendered inoperable. Ford has claimed several things that caused the fire including a backfire (which diesels do not do) and the mechanics I have had to look at it, including the local Ford dealer's mechanic, came to the same conclusion, it was the cruise control. Ford refuses to fix my vehicle, and I have been without transportation since then. I do not have the almost $3,000. 00 that it will cost to fix my truck.
The cruise control failed to turn off. After several hours of highway driving with the cruise control turned on, I was not able to turn the cruise control off by using the cruise control on/off switch or by braking. The truck accelerated when the brakes were applied. After several attempts to turn the cruise control off it finally turned off by braking.
Ford f250 diesel parked in driveway next to house spontaneously caught fire during the night. Truck totally destroyed, (other property also damaged/destroyed). Had issues with cruise control not working, was fixed twice, after second time fixed and stopped working, did not have fixed again. Had no other issues with vehicle, no reason for it to catch fire.
The contact owns a 1996 Ford F-250. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked next to the garage the vehicle ignited into flames. The vehicle burned down the entire garage and did partial fire damage to the house. The contact has not called the manufacturer regarding the fire. The contact notice numerous complaints regarding fires for this year make and model. The contact had the vehicle repaired under a manufacturers recall years prior to the failure for the cruise control where the dealer replaced a wiring harness that could cause a fire. The contact stated someone could have lost their life due to the fire. The failure mileage was 158,000.
On Thursday evening February 18, 2010 at approximately 9:45 pm my wife noticed when she took our dog out in our front yard that our 1999 Ford f250 lariet 7. 3 liter diesel was on fire. I had connected the factory installed block heater to a 120v extension cord at around 9:00 pm that same evening, as usually done in the evenings when it will be driven the next day. Ambient temperature was approximately 25 degrees f. The truck has factory installed cruise control, and was brought in to a Ford dealer in around July 2009 as required by a Ford recall notice about cruise controls. The service department of the dealership said the cruise control was not defective. Based upon the fire, I believe Ford's test procedures to assess the safe operation of the cruise control switch as to corrosion/electrical resistance, and excessive heat generation, is in adequate because it probably does not measure conductivity, and switch assembly temperature. The bettendorf, iowa fire department responded, and extinguished the fire within five minutes once they had the hoses, pry bars, and hydraulic jaws in place. The scott county sheriff department also responded. Our insurance company said the truck is totaled, and awaiting my decision regarding salvage. I will contact an attorney (he was in court) Monday February 22, 2010 regarding what I believe that the cause of the fire was the cruise control switch, probably manufactured by texas instruments. The truck has not been moved awaiting directions from the attorney.
The failure was the cruise control started a fire in my 1997 Ford f250 while my wife ,our 16 month old and myself were sleeping. Luckily we got out but everything we had is a total lose.

Cruise control does not work.
The contact owns a 2002 Ford f250. The contact stated that the recall for the cruise control was recently repaired; however, the contact was responsible for paying the repair cost to have the cruise control switch replaced. The contact stated that fuse was replaced in 2007; yet, it continued to leak. He doesn't agree with having to pay the repair cost. The failure mileage was 110,000 and the current mileage was 118,000.
The contact owns a 1999 Ford f250 sd. The contact stated that the speed control deactivation switch was leaking brake fluid and as a result, the cruise control failed. The vehicle was to the dealer who refused to do any repairs since the vehicle was previously repaired under NHTSA campaign id number: 06v286000 (vehicle speed control). The manufacturer was contacted who stated it was up to the dealer whether they would repair it free of charge. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 219,838 and the current mileage was 241,000.
1. Failure of cruise control it would stop working then stop 2. Just when tried to use it would either work or not then it caught fire in the drive way 3. Nothing yet we think the truck is totaled out.
Wiring in the steering column has been coming apart and pieces falling out of the column. The cruise control, airbag and horn are all not working as a result of this failure. It is a flat (ribbon wire) wire that appears to run from the steering wheel through the center of the column.
The cruise control will not disengage at times when hitting the brake, causing the vehicle to continue to accelerate when a stop or slow down is required. I reported this to the dealer at approx 38,000 miles and was informed it was not are call defect. I know this has been an issue on earlier Ford trucks. This is a repetitive issue.

I just found out that my 2001 F-250's cruise control was never replaced just disconnected,I only found out after I took it to an independent repair to repair a brake problem. Because my brake system lost pressure. The original Ford solution of disconnecting the cruise control fixes one problem but that same faulty part is still poses danger. I took my truck to Ford a there report showed no recall notice showing and they told me it would be $103 to replace the part, of course I paid it, it would be to dangerous not too. The dealer told me I should call Ford customer complaint dept to try and get my money back. But the real issue is that many people that think they can live with Ford's first solution, without cruise control. Think again about suddenly losing brake pressure.
The contact owns a 2001 Ford f250 super duty. The contact stated that his cruise control switch was recalled. He took the vehicle to be repaired according to the recall. The dealer stated that the cruise control was disconnected and previously replaced; therefore, Ford would not pay for it again. The contact stated that the cruise control was never previously repaired. He took the vehicle to another dealer, but they also did not want to make the repairs. The failure mileage was 95,638.
The contact owns a 2005 Ford F-250 superduty. The contact
stated when he shifted into cruise control at 70 mph, he then
noticed that the speed was increasing. He attempted to
deactivate the cruise control but the vehicle would not slow
down. He also attempted to apply the brakes which had no effect on the speed. He then drove onto the emergency lane and pumped the
brakes until the vehicle slowed down. He also shifted into park, shut the vehicle off and called the dealership. The service manager
advised him to restart the vehicle which appeared to function normally; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle driven to an
authorized dealership but the dealer could not diagnose or duplicate the failure; there were also no failure codes produced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact called the manufacturer who recorded the failure in their database. The current mileage was approximately 61,000. The failure mileage was approximately 31,000.

Cruise control ceased working. Since this did not appear to be a serious issue, other than significant discomfort on long trips, and the truck continued to operate acceptably except for the cruise control, I continued driving. Approximately three weeks later smoke was detected when truck was started. Upon further inspection (still in my driveway, truck still running), flames were seen under the hood at the wiring beside the master cylinder. The fire soon stopped, and the wiring was cool. Truck was still seemed to operate properly, including brakes, so I proceeded with my plans and drove the truck. The next morning after the initial fire incident, a significant amount of smoke came out from under the hood of the truck when started, causing brief but well voiced discomfort from my daughter. The smoke came from the same wiring. The following morning, the second day after the initial fire incident, I took the truck to an auto repair shop (Monday morning). The owner told me there was a recall for the speed control switch and I should take it to Ford. Ford told me there was no recall for this switch for my truck because it is a diesel. The recall 06v286000 matches the conditions and description in that the cruise control switch could overheat, result in smoke, or burn in an underhood fire. After returning to the auto repair shop, the switch was replaced and a fused wiring harness was installed, purchased from Ford. The Ford dealership I had contacted, the one where the part was subsequently purchased from, had 1,200 of them in stock, according to the phone conversation I overheard.
The contact owns a 2002 Ford f250. The contact received a recall notice for NHTSA campaign id number 06v286000 (vehicle speed control). He took the vehicle to the dealer for repair and was informed that other repairs needed to be performed first. The cruise control failure damaged the fuse block and cable harness. He was informed that the repair costs would total approximately $1,500 - $2,000. The manufacturer stated that they sent the contact other notices and would provide assistance. The contact stated that he never received any notice prior to the one dated may of 2008. The vehicle's cruise control also stopped working around the time he received the recall notice. The current and failure mileages were approximately 90,000.
Ford's recall policy for cruise switches only allows for disconnect of switch. If the switch is leaking brake fluid Ford offers no fix for this potentially serious problem. Dealers, while not having all repair parts, have switches they can install to stop the leak but Ford will not pay for this repair.
The contact owns a 2001 Ford f250 super duty. While driving approximately 70 mph, the contact attempted to use the cruise control, but it did not work. The cruise control light illuminated, but the cruise control still failed. The manufacturer stated that the VIN was excluded from the recall. The vehicle has not been taken to the dealer. The recall number was unknown. The current mileage was 58,000 and failure mileage was 57,300.
The contact owns a 1997 Ford F-250 sd. The contact stated that the cruise control module caught fire in the beginning of 2008. The fire and police departments extinguished the fire and filed a report. The vehicle was destroyed. The contact stated that he never received a recall notice from Ford, although Ford stated that one was sent. The purchase date was unknown. The current and failure mileages were approximately 110,000.
