Ford F-350 owners have reported 31 problems related to brake disc caliper (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Engine stopped once in the road pulling a 40 ft. R. V. . Intermintley severe loss of power and trying to overheat. Comeing down a 7200 ft. Mountain I lost the r. V. Brakes, engine brakes & the tow haul mode (to help slow down) all I had was the truck brakes going around 80 m. P. H. By the time I got stopped all 4 wheels were smokeing cooking the related parts, rotors, brake pads, calipers, wheel bearings in my opinion. Later in a town going slow and stopping the brakes pulled violently to the right, a few more traffic lights then violently to the left. Failing to clean the diesel exhaust filter as needed. Sometimes the wipers come on one time when starting the engine. 3 attemps to fix the engine problems and in my mind it is not fixed yet, most of these problems happened at higher altitudes. All this information should be in the trucks black box, since I could have gotten killed twice I have not let the dealer have the truck again as it is running o. K. Now and I have ordered a new truck because I am afraid of this truck. The dates are approximate, the dealers and I have a copy of the repair attemps . I was on the same roads two years ago with a 2011 f-250 same engine and a heaver load and did not have any problems.

Since I bought the truck in may of 2014 I have experienced uneven braking, meaning most of the time when I brake, the vehicle pulls to the right hard. Less so on the left. On August 6th, 2014 I took my 2014 Ford f350xl super duty to varney Ford in newport maine to have the vehicle looked at. They replaced both brake calipers and pads. I drove the my truck to tennessee on August 15th, 2014 with our 16,000lb 5th wheel camper on the back, during the trip I had to do 2 emergency brakings in 3 lane traffic. The truck lurched to the right both times and I had to fight the wheel to keep the truck straight! it kept doing it on our way back home to maine as well. It has done this for quite some time and on July 30th of 2015 I took my truck to hight Ford in skowhegan, maine for an unusual noise in the drive line. They put the vehicle on the lift and checked everything out. The mechanic brought me to the truck that was on the lift and showed me the excess brake dust on the rims. He asked me to try to turn the right side wheel, it was hard to turn. He told me that this is where the problem could be. The left wheel turned without effort but the right side was stuck. I told the mechanic of the problems that I have with braking and that it pulls hard to the right. They checked on bulletins and there is one bulletin on unusual braking on these vehicles. This is the 3rd set of calipers put on this truck and still the brakes are pulling to the right. I am heading out to tennessee on August 14th 2015 and I am quite certain that this problem will occur again. The day after having the brakes "fixed" for the 3rd time the rims are covered in excess brake dust. Not only is this slowing my vehicle down to give me lower mileage it is also a safety hazard if I have to brake hard again on a crowded highway and slam into a few cars as well. What happens then?.

Was driving my 2006 f350 sd lariat dually with only 7,858 miles, hauling a gooseneck trailer with a horse inside and steering started to shimmy once I got up to highway speed (55 mph) on I-85n enroute to a horse show. Placed my foot on the brake and got no response. I could not stop the 15,000# of truck, trailer and horse but was able to get off the road and cruise into a large empty parking lot and slow down enough where I could safely apply the emergency brake without going through the windshield or injuring my horse. Tires were fine but there was a distinctive smell of burning pad against red hot metal and tremendous smoke was billowing out from behind the passenger side right front wheel where the rotor is seated. Brake caliper seized onto the rotor, warping it and destroying the brake pad. Post police escort, had it towed to the dealership and $2,400 later (which included new batteries and 2 new front tires), all the offending items were replaced. I specifically asked that the rear calipers and brake mechanism be checked and they assured me they did and nothing was wrong. However, coming directly home from the dealership, my driver side rear wheel brake seized with the same exact problem. Again, had to be towed to the dealership and another $1,600 later (this amount includes 4 more tires), replacing everything having to do with the rear brakes. In my research on this matter, I have discovered that this is not an isolated but a common problem possibly due to faulty hcu (hydraulic control unit) equipment. Could have easily been a tragic accident on a very busy interstate. This is most definitely a safety issue. A fire also could have easily started as the brake fluid pumped back into the main engine area of the truck. Though I have replaced both front and rear brakes there is no assurance that this danger will not recur.

When I originally bought the vehicle, shortly thereafter the right rear brakes had been dragging and when the vehicle stopped, heavy smoke was coming from the right side rear wheel. The dealership replaced the calipers and rotors. The vehicle now has 44000 miles on it now. Periodically the brakes have been dragging again as I can smell the brakes when I exit the truck.

Monday, January 3, 2011, we were driving on a rural road in route to sharps chapel, tennessee when the right side front passenger caliper/rotor assembly failed causing smoking and burning smell of the brake shoes forcing me to pull to the side of the road. After allowing the brakes to cool, I contacted and drove to morristown Ford in tennessee and they to attempted to repair the brakes by disassembling and cleaning the caliper/rotor since they did not have the parts available to appropriately rectify the situation. This repair was not effective and the problem has repeated itself 3 times since then, most recently on October 5, 2012. This appears to be a very dangerous vehicle design and/or part failure!! Ford needs to rectify this problem!!.
2008 Ford F-350 sd diesel 31000 miles brake caliper failure the vehicle had lag because the brakes were stuck on once vehicle was stopped the smell of the brake was very noticeable also very hot could not touch the wheel hub once the caliper was removed it was a piece that had broken inside causing the brakes to stick while I was buying the caliper there was another truck same problem only 18,000 miles also comments from parts that this happens all the time .

The contact owns a 2002 Ford f350 diesel engine vehicle. He stated that the rear brakes would not lock but would stick while braking at 40 mph. He also stated that the vehicle would feel as if it were pulling from side to side. The dealer replaced the rear and frontal disc brakes. The contact made repairs to the rear caliper. He also felt that the brake line may have been the cause of the failure. To date, the failure persists. The failure and current mileages were under 64,000. Updated 4/28/10

I have a 1999 Ford f350. I have the brakes worked on 4 separate times in the 5 years since the truck from my father in law. The front start to shake very hard and final slows down. I have had the rotors replace the calipers replaced and the rotors turned. I have only put 60,000 miles on this truck and my father in law had put 160,000. He was having the same problem with the brakes. I have taken it to the dealer each time and they say it is hard driving. I have not been pulling any trailers with it and the brakes usually start shaking within a couple thousand miles of the brake job.

I have a 2008 Ford f350 super duty 4x4 crew cab diesel dully. Several months ago while driving the truck the rear driver side brake locked. After investigating the problem the rear brake caliper had broken. Was able to carefully drive to Ford dealership in terrell TX. They accused me of running over something. After repairing the brake caliper they apologized for the accusation. The had to replace brake caliper tire and rim. This same thing occurred last Wednesday. Except this was the opposite side on the rear. This time the vehicle was traveling through an intersection and almost caused a horrible accident. One the brake locks up it pulls the vehicle to that side causing me to lose control of the vehicle. This vehicle has been in and out of the shop for numerous problems. Had the diesel engine replaced in oct just 4 months after purchasing it.
I was slowing down to a stop light when my driverside rear tire was smoking profusely. I stopped to check the problem out and the rear brake was locked up. I spoke to workers at the Ford dealership and they told me this is a normal occurrence with this particular model truck. I replaced the driverside rear caliper and went on my way. Two weeks later the same thing happened to the passenger side rear caliper. The dealers I have spoken to once again said this is a normal occurrence and that you only get about a year out of the calipers. At over $250 a caliper this is very expensive. I don't tow with my vehicle or abuse it in any way. I am strict with maintaining it.

The contact owns a 2006 Ford F-350. The contact stated that while driving 30 mph, the front passenger wheel seized. The failure occurred because the caliper seized. The contact also stated that the wheel was extremely hot after the failure occurred. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and the caliper was repaired. The failure had since recurred on an intermittent basis. The vehicle was either taken back to the dealer for repair or the contact performed the repairs himself. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 7,000.
Design flaw front brake calipers have no pad retention device and the thickness of the backing plate is less than or equal to the distance from the caliper cage to the rotor. This, combined with the lack of wear indicator tabs means that the brakes function properly right up until the friction material is almost gone at which time there is the scraping noise. At this time the pad can and has on my truck, slid right out of the caliper and landed on the ground. This leaves one trying to stop a one ton truck with the brake cup directly on the rotor. When it happened I was going very slowly in a warehouse so no damage occurred. It could occur on any superduty of that approximate vintage .

Repeated brake caliper problems. Brake pads lock in on position while caliper releases. Result is that one brake pad in a set will quickly become worn while other pad is like new. Failure results when locked pad is undetected, then caliper, rotor and brake line damage result. This has occurred on 3 seperate instances and on seperate wheels. Ford has paid for one rear caliper, front rotors. This problem began on or before 16,000 miles. Vehicle has been serviced and repaired at Ford garages only. This vehicle is not a severe duty truck, has a tow haul package. Further: immediately, after one repair abs lite came on and brakes went to floor. Abs stayed on for 10 minutes and then when brakes were pumped they went out and brake returned. Immediate thought was that abs malfunction was due to brake repair and correct and that it was a temporary problem. Front brake pads did however malfuction within 400 miles of this incident. From the beginning this truck has had an occasional spongey brake problem. Incident date is the last date noted. First date occurred 02/30/07. Incident date of this report reflects last to date incident.
05 and 06 Ford f350 ambulance brake caliber pistons break or crack and hold piston out making brakes unable to fully release, both our 05 have have done it one on all four wheel and the other just the fronts so far and now our 06 has the fronts on both sides tolal of three of the four pistons broke.
The contact owns a 2006 Ford f350. The contact stated that the brakes will lock and cause the calipers to burn. A small fire occurred during one of the failures. The brakes and calipers have been replaced four times, most recently on April 22, 2007. The dealer stated that the cause of the frequent failures could be due to several reasons; however, they were unable to diagnose the exact cause of the failures. The manufacturer assisted with the first four failures, but would not assist with the current one. The vehicle is currently at the dealer being repaired. The current mileage was 66,672 and failure mileage was 800. Updated 10/14/08 the consumer also stated he has had a problem with the steering wheel. Updated 10/16/08.
Front brakes, fade and extended stopping distance; there are float pins which keep the calipers centered over the rotors . They have seized up. The vehicle breaking was becoming sluggish. Repeated inspection of the front brake pads indicated their condition to be good. Eventually I decided to order new calipers with pads. These units came with 'new float pins'. Much to my surprise my calipers were good but they were locked in position because of the seized float pins. When the brakes were applied the pressure was to the inside pad only greatly lengthening the stopping distance. As the problem came on gradually I didn't realize how poor the braking had become until I rebuilt the system. The pins which need to slide for proper braking have little rubber boots to keep out road debris and water. These boots were not seated on the grove on the original caliper body. As the symptoms come on gradually there are other vehicles out there with severely degrading brake performance. Curiously the replacement calipers had a bag of spare parts.

I am having a problem with my steering and brakes. At times while driving my steering wheel will lock up and be very jerky,at times the steering wheel will go back and forth very fast and you cannot hold wheel straight. I have had this vehicle to the dealer 2 times in a week for this problem they replaced ball joints, steering stabilizer and tierodends. The problem still exsist and I have called dealer and they said they contacted Ford and they are unsure of what else it could be. The brakes are also locking up while driving and when stopped there is alot of smoke from both rear brakes. Again this is not all the time so dealer says they cannot fix this as well. I am very concerned I have a family that is in this vehicle and both of these issures are saftey.
When truck originally purchased bubble on tire, and dealer said they all come that way, tire went flat while parked about a month later, no holes, we were told tire was no good, had to be replaced. Truck kept stalling, loss of brakes and steering while navigating downhill, solenoid assembly replaced. 2 days later kept stalling. Dealer had truck 21 days to rebuild transmission, again solenoid assembly replaced after that replaced wiring harness. Since then, caliper broke and brakes went, turbo has been replaced. Vehicle has repeatedly stalled, noises from rear end with no dx. Now engine smoking, loss of power, rpms jump while idling. Truck has also repeatedly changed gears automatically, ie while at red light truck would jump to 3rd and then truck would stall.

Right front caliper won't release. Apparently common problem with 4x4 per mechanic. Gouged out rotor and almost caused accident.
The brakes started pulling left around July of 2003. Three different dealers worked on the vehicle. Instead of fixing the problem, they changed the toe-in to counteract the truck pulling left on braking. As a result, the truck pulled right from excessive alignment change, which caused an accident. The dealer initially changed the rotors, and calipers, but it did not solve the problem. The only reason I knew that the dealer changed the alignment is because I took the truck to a goodyear tire store for an alignment before taking it to the dealer for the brakes. After the first time the dealer changed the alignment, I took the truck back to the goodyear tire store. They made the laignment right, but the truck stilled pulled left and the steering wheel was way off centered. Goodyear tire told me to take it back to the delaer to fix the problem. Once I got the truck back, the steering wheel was straight, but the alignment was wrong and it did not handle properly. In fact, the truck was dangerous to drive. After that I took ti to a dealer in reno, nevada and in dixon California. All dealers insisted that the pulling was caused by a tire pull. Each dealership backed up the other dealership 's story, since I told them I had an accident that was caused by their work.
The right rear caliper was dragging causing it to overheat, dealer informed.
During brake application while driving at any speed vehicle will pull intermittently to right and / or left, more severe at higher speeds. Dealership has examined vehicle nine times, and replaced brake calipers/pads/ lines/ rear spring shackle adjustments, and positive caster. Dealership has been unable to effectively remedy problem ,and informed consumer no more service would be performed on this vehicle. Please provide any additional information / documentation.
Front brake caliper rattle. Disc brake assemblies rattle under liight gravel road condition and over light bumps. Is assembly coming apart? Ford says they are aware of the situation but recomends no fix at this time. Is there a problem with the brakes on f350 super duty vehivcles? Ford says they know there is a prolem from 2000 to 2001 f250/350 and excursion. Special service bulletin #14277 from Ford motor company.
Severe driver side rear brake rotor destruction from caliper mounted on front of rotor, preventing self cleaning of mud, from rotor face. Rotor is destroyed by abrasive action of grit held in place against rotor by forward motion of wheels. This problem has been encountered in our other two 1999 Fords (1-f550 and 1-f450). Our company operates a fleet of 50 vehicles in offroad oilfield service trucking. We have 33 years experience in this type of offroad vehicle use. This problem is the most severe engineering problem we have encountered in our experience. This must be addressed by Ford and an engineering change must be made. Certain injuries and deaths will probably occur during high speed brake applications if the disc pad locks into the forged cooling web of the rotor.
When driving & starting to brake, brakes would pulsate & vibrate. Took vehicle to dealer & mechanic indicated brake rotors & shoes were inadequate for vehicle. The rotors were warping, and were turned. Calipers & shoes were replaced. Problem still exists. Rotors/calipers & shoes were replaced again for the 4th time. Heat from size of truck would warp rotors. Dealer was ording heavy duty brake rotors/ calipers & shoes.
Vehicle sways while driving. Dealer has aligned vehicle, and consumer has purchased new tires and vehicle still sways. Front end pulls right when braking due to brake caliper failure.
Air intake hose to the manifold came loose when the turbo was needed. Intake hose has been replaced four times between February and may with less than 5,000 miles on vehicle. Axle/calipers and repairs to driveline had to been made because of the air intake manifold. Ford was replacing the truck. Please provide any further information.
Consumer states the vehicle pulls to the right when the brakes are applied. The vehicle was involved in an accident one month prior to this problem. The dealer has replaced 3 times the calipers and pads and the problem repeats itself. Please provide more information. Mr.
