36 Transmission Shudder problem

Failure Date: 03/03/2014

Car was purchased in November 2013 with 38000 miles on it. One previous owner prior to myself. The car began jerking backwards when parking on an incline. By the time I had 40000 miles on the car, I began noticing that the car would not change gears when driving, this was especially a concern when pulling onto a highway and the car would not go. Then by the time the car hit 42000 the transmission would make a grinding noise when going uphill from a stop. The car went into the garage and the transmission was reprogrammed and clutch replaced. I never had a car with these kind of problems so early. Ford should have a recall on the transmission with all the complaints/ concerns.

37 Transmission Shudder problem

Failure Date: 01/06/2014

This car is dangerous, living in a hilly state, this car rolls backwards down hill whilst still in a forward gear. In light of Fords recent quiet recall for other Focus transmission issues, they still have not addressed the fact that the car rolls quickly backwards when the brake is released and because of the shuddering transmission, it cannot grip and go forward. If I had wanted to drive with both feet I would have bought a manual. I am saddened by the fact that your organization is waiting for fatalities rather than order a large corporation to withdraw their dangerous product. I thought you worked for me and all americans to keep us safe on the road? protecting the public who have been sold an unsafe vehicle??? I would wager every Focus sold since 2012 is an accident waiting to happen. Please log my complaint with the thousands of others you have received about these Ford transmissions. Thank you.

38 Transmission Shudder problem

Failure Date: 12/12/2013

Severe transmission shuddering, lurching, lack of power and speed control especially at red lights. Although I have entered that it occurred 12/12/13, it actually has happened since the day I bought it. When my husband took the car in, the service department said "maybe your wife doesn't know how to drive an automatic".

39 Transmission Shudder problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2013

The vehicle has experienced numerous transmission issues from shuddering, stalling, jerking, rolling back, grinding, jumping forward and improper shifting. The vehicle has been at the dealership numerous times with various clutches replaced, software installs and other parts replaced. This has not fixed the issues and they keep reoccurring. This is unsafe and has even caused the vehicle to stall in the middle of an intersection. Luckily, traffic was not close enough or it could have been catastrophic. I really hope Ford does recall these vehicles or gives the unhappy owners a chance to turn the car back in through a vehicle buyback plan. There are so many of these complaints something needs to be done.

40 Transmission Shudder problem

Failure Date: 10/06/2013

On-going issues with the transmission shudder, jerk, choking at lower speeds especially at about 15 mpg to 40 mpg. There has not been an accident yet but many close calls. During stop and go traffic, or making a turn from a stoplight, or in a construction zone where speeds are slower - driving this vehicle becomes an issue. There are time when the car will not move even with the gas pedal pushed, it jerks and chugs until the transmission kicks in causing a delay in acceleration, or it chokes as if it will die on the spot. These are all opportunities to cause an accident or to be hit because you cannot get your car to move. In detroit traffic is brutal - they do not stop for anything. I purchased the vehicle in may of 2012 - I only have 21,000 miles on the vehicle ( currently 10/15/14). I cannot trade it in since the vehicle valued so low. I cannot sell it since no one will buy a vehicle that drives the way it does. Ford has provided a 7 yr. 100,000 mile warranty for the transmission but that is of no satisfaction to me. No one knows what the wear and tear will be as the car ages and someone dies because of it. These vehicles need to be seriously addressed. I don't drive the vehicle much because I do not feel safe - you cannot predict how much worse it is going to drive on any given day. Dealer repairs do not fix the problem, it never goes ways and the car behaves badly every day - throw in a major meltdown for the really bad days.

41 Transmission Shudder problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2013

Jerking and shuddering from the transmission, dual clutch assembly was replaced, and the issue started again 3 weeks out of service.

42 Transmission Shudder problem

Failure Date: 07/04/2013

I bought as a Ford pre-owned. I did not notice the transmission shuddering. After owning the car for about a week. I started noticing the transmission starting to get jerky. I contacted the dealership, and was told that they performed the update before I bought the car. They also stated that there was nothing that could be done because that is the way the new transmission are. It is not getting any better. If I could I would be trading in and getting another vehicle.

43 Transmission Shudder problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2013

Submission from constituent re problems with 2012 Ford Focus. The consumer noticed the automatic transmission seemed a bit jerky and it shifted more often. When the consumer visited the dealer to have the oil changed and the tries rotated, she mentioned her findings to the mechanic, and he indicated there was an update available they would perform. When she picked the vehicle up later that day, the problem was much worse. The transmission hesitated and shuddered even more than before the update and the noise was she was hearing, when the vehicle shifted was louder and sounded as if cans were in the transmission. The dealer advised the consumer, to give it a week, because the computer needed to reprogram itself. A week later, the dealer called the consumer, but the problem was still present. The vehicle was taken back to dealer. When the consumer returned to pick up the vehicle, there was still no change. Over time, the problem did not resolve itself. The consumer returned to the dealer, where they test drove the vehicle, and claimed the it was performing within Fords specifications and there was nothing else they could do. The mechanic did acknowledge there was a jerk in the transmission, it shuddered and hesitated, but stated, there was no fix for the noise as of yet.

44 Transmission Shudder problem

Failure Date: 06/27/2013

Transmission shudders on accelerations and has trouble shifting into gears. There is a scraping noise from the transmission after driving a long time.

45 Transmission Shudder problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2013

The transmission vibrates in 1st and 2nd gear and sometimes doesn't get into proper gear. When shutting vehicle off sometimes lurches . When stopped on a hill, in gear, if you take foot off the brake the vehicle will roll back like it's in neutral have returned 3 times to dealership still not fixed needs to be recalled.

46 Transmission Shudder problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2013

Transmission vibration, shuttering, jumping in and out of gear , clunking into gear , can't find gear ,rolling back, slipping, flaring .

47 Transmission Shudder problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2013

The transmission has shuddered and slipped from new. Ford has replaced the clutch twice, made program module adjustments numerous times. Nothing they have done has resolved the problem. I purchased this car for my daughter and constantly am concerned that she drives a car that does nothing but hesitate and shudder.

48 Transmission Shudder problem

Failure Date: 10/17/2012

The vehicle transmission shudders, hesitates, and lurches when starting out or accelerating. It can temporarily strand the driver in front of oncoming traffic or unexpectedly lunge the vehicle ahead from a stop and I am concerned over the potential for causing an accident. It is obvious to all passengers and all drivers every time the car is driven. It has been present since initial brand-new delivery of the vehicle and seems to be getting worse (I am now over 20,000 miles). Online research reveals this is a widespread known issue with this vehicle. I called the dealer, described the symptoms, and asked for a service appointment. He stated this is a known issue, is expected in this unique type of transmission, and I need to accept it. He did not feel I needed to bring the car in for a service evaluation but I persisted and brought it in. When I arrived I was given a printed handout regarding this vehicle transmission that again suggested this behavior was expected and "normal" and implied that I needed to accept it. Instead of the usual service evaluation, he had me drive the car with a dealer representative who acknowledged the symptoms, that this is a known, widespread issue and that it is expected behavior with this unique transmission. I was sent home without further evaluation and it was implied that I should not bring back the car for this issue. I feel this is a safety issue. I have driven many hundreds of thousands of miles over many decades and have never, ever experienced such unusual performance in a transmission and I am genuinely worried that my teenage daughter will be put in a dangerous position due to the "expected" behavior of this transmission. I am asking for a formal review and replacement with a unit that performs on par with industry standards. I feel Ford will not entertain further discussion and appeal to NHTSA.

49 Transmission Shudder problem

Failure Date: 08/06/2012

Transmission shudders had it fixed twice front end want stay lined up have purchase three set of tires eating my tiers up had it lined up three times sick of this car it a lemon.

50 Transmission Shudder problem

Failure Date: 07/10/2012

Transmission shudder. Car acts like it is going to stall. Ford , the dealer are all aware of the problem with the transmission. Since it is a intermitent problem on this car nobody wants to fix it. Am being told nothing wrong. The part exists to fix just will not do . Without recall.

51 Transmission Shudder problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2012

This car has had transmission problems with the dual clutch automatic transmission it will shudder when changing gears, rollback, come close to stalling. I took the car in to be "reprogrammed" back in June of 2012 it drove okay with only minor hiccups with transmission until October 20, 2013. The car has less than 22,000 miles on it and the car is now not shifting properly. I put the car in drive and it was like I was still in neutral, once it did get going then it did not shift into 2nd gear properly. The car is not safe to drive. I will be taking back to dealership once again to reprogram hopefully at no charge. This car is a lemon and needs to be on a mandatory recall.

52 Transmission Shudder problem

Failure Date: 06/06/2012

From the day purchased, transmission shudders while driving, going up a hill or taking off. Took to dealer and they said that's normal.

53 Transmission Shudder problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2012

The transmission shudders when shifting at low speeds. Also shudders when starting from a dead stop. Reported to the dealer several times but the problem persists. Dealer said that the transmission learns your driving habits. They disconnected the battery for a period of time and that seemed to correct the problem temporarily then it returns to the shuddering.

54 Transmission Shudder problem

Failure Date: 05/10/2012

I bought my car brand new and have had problems with the transmission within a month of driving it. The first time I took it in they reprogrammed the powertrain to fix shuddering and rollback as well as fixed the nameplate that fell off my car. The transmission seemed to shudder way more than before after this. The second time I took it in they repaired a leaky seal and reprogramed the powertrain control module. Since then it still rolls back on slight inclines but not as much. Also, my car still makes loud grinding sounds as well as shudders and hesitates at low speeds. I'm going to bring it in for a third time, because of the excessive shuddering, hesitation and is leaking transmission oil. Besides the transmission problems the quality of my car seems to be an issue as well, as water seems to collect inside the doors after it rains. This is very frustrating as this is my first brand new car and my first time buying a Ford.

55 Transmission Shudder problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2012

Transmission shudder. Rebuilt 3 times. Software reset 5 times. Transmission computer replaced 1x. Still shudders, drifts back when on a hill, jerks into gear suddenly. Service station advised me when they replaced the computer (not under warranty) that the shudder and other characteristics were normal for the transmission and did not do anything about it. This began when I purchase the car in spring of 2012 and is still an issue now at about 82,0000 miles. Most of the work was done while under the normal warranty. The last service, when they replaced the computer was done in September 2014. The transmission is not operating normally and seems dangerous at times when it jerks into gear or rolls back when at a stop.
