The vehicle failed to restart and was later towed to the local pep boys service center. The service mechanic diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the tcm was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and was later towed to the local dealer. The local dealer also stated that the tcm was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The contact was informed that the vehicle was not eligible for the extended warranty for the failure. Failure Date: 06/26/2025

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Focus. The contact stated while attempting to drive from a complete stop, the vehicle failed to respond upon depressing the accelerator pedal. Additionally, the vehicle failed to respond upon shifting to reverse(r). The contact stated that the vehicle failed to shift into gears. The check engine warning light was illuminated, and the message "transmission fault. Service now" was displayed. The contact was able to shift to neutral(n) after several attempts, and the vehicle was pushed into a gas station with assistance. The contact stated that upon scanning the vehicle with a vehicle scanner, the contact retrieved diagnostic trouble codes indicating a tcm failure. The contact accidentally reset the codes, and the vehicle became drivable; however, the vehicle failed to exceed 40 mph. The contact stated that the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed, but the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure because the contact had reset the codes. The vehicle was taken to a second dealer, nielsen Ford of morristown(170 ridgedale Ave, morristown, NJ 07960), where it was diagnosed with tcm failure and the contact was provided an estimate fee for the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 95,711.

4 Automatic Transmission Control Module (tcm/pcm/tecm) problem of the 2013 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 10/31/2023

The contact owns a 2013 Ford Focus. The contact stated that the check engine warning light remained illuminated. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 18v735000 (fuel system, gasoline); and the vehicle was taken to a local dealer where the recall repair was performed. The contact was concerned that the dealer had not properly completed the recall repair. The contact stated that the recall remedy was incomplete, and that the powertrain control module (pcm) should have been updated, and the evaporative emissions canister purge valves and the evaporative emission canister should have been replaced; however, the dealer had not performed the additional repairs. The manufacturer was contacted, and the contact was informed that no additional repairs were available because the recall repair had been deemed completed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 103,000.

5 Automatic Transmission Control Module (tcm/pcm/tecm) problem of the 2018 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 10/08/2023

The contact owns a 2018 Ford Focus. The contact stated while driving from a complete stop, the vehicle hesitated and experienced hard transmission shifts. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the transmission clutch and the clutch actuator were replaced. The contact stated that while her significant other was driving approximately 25 mph, the vehicle stalled. The driver was unable to pull to the side of the road. Upon inspecting the vehicle, the driver noticed that the engine had fallen onto the ground. The vehicle was towed to a second dealer, don vance Ford, inc. (mo-38, marshfield, mo 65706), where it was determined that the motor mounts needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle had failed to respond upon shifting to reverse(r). The contact stated that the vehicle was significantly sluggish while shifting into gear. The first dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the transmission control module had failed; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised the contact to file a complaint with the NHTSA hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 85,000.
