2 Engine Failure problem of the 2016 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 01/12/2020

Earlier in January, I was driving down interstate 70 from kansas city to st. Louis at the rate of 77 mph. All of a sudden the car dings and sends a message on the dash "engine failure" and the car literally shuts down. I had no control over the car, no lights, no brakes, nothing! luckily I got to the shoulder of the road safely and finally came to a stop. I put the car in park and turned the key off. Still nothing. . . I waited about 5 minutes and then turned the car back on and thankfully it started. I drove it to the nearest place to have them run a diagnostic test and nothing came up. Finally got it home. It's not done this again, but now it runs rough. Like really rough. I've had the transmission clutch fixed once already. Luckily it was still under warranty. I will be contacting my local Ford dealer about this issue. Was unaware it was under recall.

3 Engine Failure problem of the 2014 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 12/02/2018

I purchased my Ford Focus 2014 with 40,000 miles for $17,000, mid year of 2017. The car drove perfectly before its first recall in December of 2018. Ever since then the car has broken down at least every 3 months. I have had four recall repairs since the purchase, I believe the recalls are the reason it needs so many additional other repairs. Besides the car itself I have spent over $35,000 on additional repairs. I have paid Ford, murray's auto / acima, all 4 u auto, firestone and best tires for repairs. I have researched the recalls and other people's experiences with the car, many of the customer experiencing way more troublesome activity with the cars with the recall than what is stated in the mail letter. I would like to request a settlement reimbursement of a new car due my unsatisfied experience with my car. I will attach all my paid and ongoing debt receipts for my car's maintenance. After one of my recalls in 2018 the car was returned to me in even worst condition, with engine failure at the wake forest nc location. I received a diagnosis at the cary crossroads, nc location that said the car would need a $10,000 new engine. I thought this was unfair because I had not had engine problems before the recall, and researching online many dissatisfied customer agreed that the specific recall was causing engine failure, and my advisor agreed that the recall fault part and engine could have negatively affected one another although refused to pay for the repair. I called Ford corporate and explain to them what happened they deducted over $6,000. 00 from the entire engine price. I was not satisfied with the cost I had to pay but paid the cost because I still had close to 10,000. 00 to pay my bank secu from the lease car loan. The alignment, rods, and brakes were also a major expense I had to pay.

8 Engine Failure problem of the 2014 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 05/31/2014

While under warranty I was driving and the engine shut off. I had to coast to the shoulder on the expressway. This happened four times during the warranty and 6 times since the warranty expired. While sitting at a red light, the light turns green and I begin to accelerate. The engine stalled fours times and three other times it almost stalled. I took the car to the dealer while it was under warranty and only once they said they found a problem with the transmission. They replaced some small part but it continues to happen. One of the times it stalled I took a picture of the message on the dash board. It said: engine failure service immediately. I showed that photo to the service manager and mechanic at Ford. Both of them said the same thing: "I've never seen that before". Makes you feel good about the car you bought from them. Also, the rear drivers side door won't open most of the time on the first attempt. I have to pull the handle two or three times before the door will open. For replaced some part on the doors because of a recall but that didn't fix the problem. It still does it. This posting asks you to specify the date of occurrence. It has happened so regularly now there are too many dates to list. I lsted may of 2014 when I bought the car. From then on it has had problem after problem after problem.

9 Engine Failure problem of the 2013 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 05/01/2014

Shifting into neutral (while decelerating/braking) will intermittently cause engine rpms to rapidly drop, resulting in engine failure/stall. Attempts to restart the engine are typically successful, although occasionally requiring multiple attempts, due to engine re-stalling. Key factors seem to be engine oil temperature, and braking/decelerating.

10 Engine Failure problem of the 2010 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 12/06/2013

My son was driving in the car pool lane when the car came to an abrupt stand still. It turns out the compressor failed and threw its parts all over the engine compartment damaging parts of the engine. When the engine failed, he lost braking and steering abilities. Compressors do not last forever. However, when a compressor quits working that should be the extent of the failure. This compressor failed and basically came apart. The car not working in the middle of a car pool lane put my son and his wife in danger as there was no where to get out and no way to move the car.

11 Engine Failure problem of the 2002 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 10/12/2012

I own a 2002 Ford Focus zx3 with a very low mileage of 45226. On October 12th Friday, I drove my car to the university, (~2 miles from my home) and parked for a few minutes. Then I started driving toward the commuter parking lot. However, 30 seconds later, a huge ?continuous knocking? sound came out from the engine followed by white smoke. Then I saw a very large amount of engine oil spill, down the road. Since I could no longer drive the car, I had to get it towed to the nearest garage. The mechanic concluded that one of the piston rods have been broken and spiked the engine oil sump. He was clueless about seeing such a mechanical failure from a low mileage, well-maintained car. Most surprisingly, there were three other Ford Focus cars with similar engine failures/defects. For a small university town, four cars with similar defects is not a normal issue. The main reason for this complaint because I had to go through a life threatening situation. The continuous knocking and wobbling that occurred for a speed of 18mph, I could only imagine what would have happened if I had been on the highway, 55+ mph. There has to be a defect or else this would have not happened to a well maintained car with regular oil changes, wheel alignments. . . Etc.

12 Engine Failure problem of the 2001 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 11/01/2009

The contact owns a 2001 Ford Focus. She received a recall notice for the rear door handles which were repaired at the manufacturer's expense (see NHTSA campaign id 05v030000). The front passenger door came open due to a defective door handle while the contact was driving. The manufacturer was contacted and advised her to take the vehicle to the dealer where they would further investigate the defect. Repairs to the passenger door were scheduled with the dealer at the owner's expense. She also stated that the engine failed and was replaced per the extended warranty. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 97,000 and the current mileage was 124,000.

13 Engine Failure problem of the 2000 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 03/01/2009

The early years Ford Focus, 2000 - 2002 are experiencing a catastrophic engine failure that can occur at any time. This problem involves the valve seat on the intake valve of the cylinder head. The valve seat cracks, breaks apart and falls into the cylinder destroying the piston, head and block cylinder wall on the single over head cam (sohc) 2. 0 liter engines - VIN 'p'. It is such a wide spread problem that Ford motor company is running out of parts. Auto part stores know of this problem. Piston ring manufacturers know of this problem. Both of which are selling parts at very high volumes related to the engine failure. Machine shops all know about this problem and state that it goes further back to the Ford escort model also. Salvage yards know about this problem and are getting 10 phone calls a day for used sohc engines. Salvage yards are selling any and all sohc engine as soon as they get them in in vehicles. Owners who choose to replace their engines with 'used' salvaged engines are encountering the dropped valve seat problem again as the replacement engines fail at approximately 100k miles also - just as the original had failed. Ford motor company knows of this problem and is providing the option of installing a salvaged engine. Cost for installing a salvaged engine with unverifiable miles has been quoted at $1250 for the engine, $2500 to $3000 total for installation. This problem is greater and larger than the 'fuel pump' safety issue and the 'brake' issue. The valve seat can and does break at any time - this problem is showing up in later years also, 2003.

16 Engine Failure problem of the 2002 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 06/11/2008

I was driving to work. I live 7 miles from work. At a stop light my car started shaking very bad and the engine shut down. It would not start again. . I had it towed to my brothers house and started researching the symptoms. . . Everything I could find leads to engine failure, caused by a thrown rod or broken piston. After checking the compression in the cylinders # 1-3 no problems about 75 psi and #4 was 0. I believe that the #4 piston or rod is broken or otherwise rendered useless causing the complete engine failure. The vehicle has 85500 miles and has been maintained per the owners manual.

17 Engine Failure problem of the 2000 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 12/23/2004

We have a 2000 Ford Focus. I have been having problems with this car ever since September to present date. No one can figure out what is wrong with this car. Ever sense September this car has been through 4 dealerships. (pomoco smithfield, pomoco Lincoln Mercury, pomoco Jeep, and freedom Ford) 2 recall notices were performed. (fuel delivery module and the pinch bolt battery cables or "steering linkages". ) the car has cut off on me a total of 16 times that I can definitely recall. I hit a curb due to engine failure. The underside of the passenger side of the car was damaged. I also almost got into 2 accidents as a result of engine failure. I also got a ticket for failure to stop at a red light because of the car puttering and almost completely stalling at red lights. My engine light came on yesterday. (March 1, 2005) for the second time.

18 Engine Failure problem of the 2003 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 08/15/2003

My 2000 Ford Focus with 70080 miles suffered engine failue while at highway speed. The engine will not remain running unless the accellerator pedal is held off of idle. The engine will not crank and stay at idle without operator intervention. The unit has been removed from service pending repair. There is a rumbling sound from the right front of the vehicle and the steering wheel shakes (+-0. 5" at 3 hertz) when at 55mph and above.

22 Engine Failure problem of the 2002 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 09/02/2002

Just completed 3 hour trip in heavy rain. Had driven through area of road with several inches of water. While vehicle approached from opposite direction the resulting splash caused the engine to fail. Towed car to a local Ford dealer and they said the cause of the engine failure was due to too much water in the engine. We also found out that the air intake valve is located near the bottom of the front bumper. This has caused us to need a new engine on a car that we haven't even had for three months. Ford refuses to pay for a new engine and insists it isn't a design flaw. The insurance adjuster stated that it is odd that the engine would fail due to water intake.
