2 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2012 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 12/13/2018

My car had less than 90,000 miles on it when it began to have issues with the transmission. The engine stutters or idles when I accelerate, which has made getting on the interstate a nightmare. If I accelerate to even 35 mph, I have to completely remove my foot from the gas pedal, otherwise my rpms will shoot to over 4 (4,000 rpms). It causes my entire car to feel like it's shaking, and it almost seems like my car is having trouble shifting gears. Not only that, but when I've stopped at a stop sign and begin to drive, my engine makes the most terrible churning/clashing/grinding noise possible. Lately it has gotten to the point that my rpms will continue to increase but my car's speed will stay the same. All of these situations (trouble shifting gears, noises, and high rpms) will occur no matter what, every time I accelerate. It doesn't matter what sort of road I am on.

3 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2017 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 11/27/2018

When powertrain is warm and vehicle is accelerating from a stop, there is a loud grinding sound, vehicle shuddering and vibration, and resulting engine hesitation as the transmission shifts from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd gear. Occasionally at highway speeds (55-65 mph) there is a noticeable vibration and shuddering as the vehicle moves into and out of overdrive gears. I have taken the car to the dealership that sold it to me twice with concern about this problem and the service tech says they are waiting for Ford to recall the faulty components, and that this is a common complaint.

4 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2013 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 03/16/2018

Transmission has never worked correctly, brought into Ford to have recall of part of transmission repaired. Never shifted correctly into next gear, sometimes jerked and sputtered and makes grinding noise and was told that it was because engine was 4 cylinder. Early in 2018, electrical system shut down. Dash lights of defrost, door lock no longer worked. Trunk stopped opening, radio stopped working and all that was heard was loud static sporadically with or without radio being on, and dome lights no longer worked either. Brought into Ford dealer and was told car needed new clutch (due to transmission never working correctly) and was no longer covered under warranty. Was told the electrical system failures were due to battery, which was replaced outside of dealer with no fix to problems at all. Was told need to replace radio which was no longer any good, car less than 5 years old at this time and that the trunk latch needed to be replaced. Was told none of the issues on the car were covered under warranty. Also received information in 2016 for class action law suit regarding my vehicle due to transmission issues.

5 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2015 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 09/01/2017

There is now this grinding noise coming from my car engine. Was acting up a month after I bought it in 2017. Everyone said OH it's fine there's nothing wrong with it. Well it acts up as soon as I start to drive it slow. . . . Others say it's the transmission. And others say I'm stupid. It slips when you start to go. I want this fixed.

8 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2013 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 08/13/2015

Bought this vehicle used with 34,869 miles on July 8, 2015. After having for about a week, noticed shaking, grinding noises, seems to be "missing" in the transmission. Took to dealer on 7/21/2015 and the reprogrammed the tcm. Vehicle still made same issues so I took to a different Ford dealer 7/27/2015 and they did the same thing. On 8/13/15 the vehicle would not start. Roadside assistance came out and jumped the vehicle to start and "faulty transmission failure" appeared on the dash screen. I attempted to take the car to the dealer but the vehicle would not go into reverse or drive. Called tow truck to take to Ford dealer that same day. The next day they claimed it needed a new transmission control module. As of today, 8/19/2015 - the car is still not fixed and is still in their shop.

9 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2012 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 07/20/2015

The contact owns a 2012 Ford Focus. While driving at 25 mph, the engine vibrated and the contact could heard a metal to metal grinding noise. In addition, the vehicle would roll back and lose power when stopped. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who diagnosed that there was a transmission failure. The technician cleaned the engine and replaced the clutch and rings, but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The failure mileage was 80,000.

10 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2013 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 01/01/2015

For a number of months the vehicle transmission shudders, lags, and acts intermittently lurching. Very dangerous. When applying gas, one never knows if the vehicle will go forward smoothly, or instead lurch or shudder potentially causing to be rear-ended by someone or hit because the vehicle doesn't accelerate to queue. All accompanied by a loud grinding sound. A piece of junk!.

11 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2013 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 12/29/2014

Car jerks when accelerating. After being stopped and stepping on the gas, car feels like it is going to stall out to the point when it begins to move again it jerks you back in the seat. Makes a loud grinding noise under the hood. Also, when turning the key to start the vehicle, it is hesitant to start. Car shakes and does not drive at an even pace unless on the highway at or above 40 mph. Been to the dealer numerous times about these problems, all to which they have no answers for.

12 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2013 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 11/11/2014

Vehicle transmission has been making a grinding noise ever since we bought the car. The grinding noise occurs at low speeds as one accelerates from zero mph. I have taken the car to the dealer only to be told it is normal. The noise doesnt sound normal and this issue has been documented by many other Ford Focus owners. The noise appears to only get worse with time. This noise cant be "normal. " please advise what is being done about this anomaly.

13 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2012 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 09/04/2014

Feels as if the car is going to stall while slowing down. After taking off after a complete stop it shifts hard or shakes and sometimes makes a grinding noise.

14 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2014 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 08/15/2014

I purchased my 2014 Ford Focus se on February 14, 2014, and since then have taken it back to the dealership 3 times (today, being the third time) to have the transmission worked on. The first time they replaced the clutch; the second time, when I called to make an appointment, they told me there was a recall on the timing and that it needed to be re-calibrated; and when the problem persisted, I took it in yesterday and was told today that there's nothing they can do. The report reads, "road test diagnose customers concern. Perform TSB 150120 measure shudder after relearn. Test passed. A 143 out of a max allowable 250 was recorded & sent to Ford. The transmission is working within Ford's design specifications. " well, Ford's design specifications are terrible. The car jolts forward from a stop and dramatically shudders, no matter how lightly or heavily I accelerate, and during high speeds it has trouble shifting gears, often times emitting a grinding noise. This noise is more present at lower speeds, though. I do a lot of freeway driving and dealing with traffic, which means a lot of stop-and-go traffic, so the drive is unpleasant, at its best, and hazardous, at its worst. It needs to be taken care of but Ford says that there's nothing they can do; that that's just the design of the transmission. I am afraid for my safety. Please do what you can to have Ford issue a recall and fix this problem. I'm fed up with their carelessness. I did not sign a contract for a broncin' buck, but a simple car with great gas mileage and a smooth ride. When I test drove it I thought it was just a sensitive accelerator that I would just need to get used to. I should have gone with my gut and bought the kia optima.

15 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2014 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 07/29/2014

I have noticed while driving my vehicle that it stutter and makes a loud grinding sound when I am going up incliines and when I am braking. I noticed my car is will be jerking and feels like the transmission is bout to give away when I am in traffic. I took my car back to the dealship because it was still under warranty and explained to them the issues that are going on with my car. They proceeded to tell me that my issues was normal for my car. I asked how could this be normal that a brand new car stutter, grinds, shift gears on it own, jerks when applying brakes or acceleration, and feels like transmission is slipping. I spoke with the mechanic that looked at my car and he said that my model car is like it has a manual engine in and automatic car. He stated that this was normal as far as the manufactuers states but actually this is not normal. Cars should not be shifting gear automatically. This issues that my car is having are very hazardous, especially in stop in go traffic and on inclines, just driving period , in the end I feel something needs to be done about this with this making model car especially being that this is a newer model car (2014).

16 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2013 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 06/02/2014

The car is experiencing transmission problems. It shudders and bogs down as I am accelerating, and often lurches forward unexpectedly. The car makes a loud grinding noise when shifting through gears. The problems began in low gears, but I am now experiencing problems at all speeds, including lurching forward. I have taken the car back to the dealership twice, only for them to tell me this is a normal occurrence. I am afraid the transmission issues will cause an accident. I am also concerned that the grinding of the gears will cause damage to other components of my vehicle.

17 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2014 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 05/16/2014

Car began to make a grinding noise when turning corners and when I'm driving slowly. It sounds also like I am dragging something, like tin cans. It also shudders when I press on the accelerator, almost like it is going to die. This is not a safe situation. The clutch on my car has already been replaced and the car is a 2014!.

18 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2010 Ford Focus

19 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2014 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 04/15/2014

Jerking upon gears changing. . Grinding sound upon acceleration and when turning left. Took it to the dealership, they determined at 900 miles the car needed a new clutch. This was replaced thinking it would fix the shifting issues and the grinding noise. The grinding noise came back yesterday as well as the car trying to cut off and idling very low at stop signs/stop lights. . The grinding continued through 3rd gear. The dealership is still trying to determine what is causing this sound. Replacing the clutch did fix the jerking and hard shifting issues however the grinding sound is still an issue.

26 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2013 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 09/04/2013

I have noticed that my car shifts awkwardly and makes a grinding noise when shifting into second and sometimes third gear. Sometimes the car will bog down and then get a surge of power and level off. Sometimes I will start going and between first and second gear it will bog and cause me to jerk forward. Some days it won't do it but most of the time it does.

27 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2014 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 09/02/2013

Trouble with the dual clutch automatic transmission from the first day of ownership. The car now has 6k miles and the problems persist. The following problems are even worse during cold weather: the transmission shifts poorly, roughly, misses shifts, chooses the wrong gear for the vehicle speed, disengages and sends the engine to redline then drops into gear with a bang and either slows the vehicle with engine braking because the gear is too low, or lugs the engine with no acceleration because the gear is too high. The transmission is always shifting, and seems 'confused' as to what gear that it should be in. In city driving, if I need to suddenly brake, when I re-apply the throttle again, the transmission hangs between gears and the engine revs to redline then drops into gear and chirps the tires. The transmission also makes grinding noises when changing from 1st to 2nd gear. Also very slow to drop to a lower gear when throttle is pressed for quick acceleration. Takes about 2 seconds for it to downshift and then accelerate. Also, the gear indicator on the console (prnds) doesn't line up with the shifter or illuminate to show which gear is selected, so it's difficult to tell whether I've selected reverse, neutral, or drive. In addition, the display on the instrument panel that shows the gear selection sometimes takes over 30 seconds to illuminate or 'boot up' to indicate what gear is selected. I often end up in neutral when I think I've chosen reverse or drive while I wait for the instrument panel indicator to 'boot up'. The dealerships say that I have the current software, and, "they all do that. " dangerous, and will probably add up to very expensive repairs as it can't possibly be reliable under these conditions.

28 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2013 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 08/25/2013

I went and traded in my mustang for something with better gas mileage which ended up being a 2013 Ford Focus (manual automatic transmission). The first one I got was in the shop 4 times for grinding noises when it tried to shift into gear. The first time they barely had it a day and told me there was nothing wrong with it. The second through the rest of the times I had it out there they just rebooted the computer and said it is fine and will be fine. Not even two days later I was on the side of the road and could get the car to move. I barely made 3 payments on that car. I kept telling them this was a lemon and they wouldn't take it back. When I took it back to the dealership the lady I talked to said "well my sons Focus hasn't been giving him any trouble. That made me really pissy. I told the lady I didn't care about her sons car you should fix mine. I went to another dealership to see if they had another Focus that didn't have the "manual automatic transmission" and they did so I got that one instead of the piece of crap I had. Now I have not even made a single payment on this new car and it is doing the same thing again. They keep telling me this is normal. I will never purchase another Focus or Ford again. I don't care what kind of Ford it is.

29 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2013 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 05/01/2013

Back in may my husband and I were traveling in stop and go traffic and noticed that my brand new 2013 Ford Focus se was grinding and making horrible noises while shifting. Especially shifting in lower gears. As I remind you. . . This is an automatic. As of today this is the 4th time that it has been back to the dearlership and still the problem is not fixed. The car continues to jerk and make mental on metal grinding noises. Today when speaking to the dealer I was told that a Ford engineer was looking at it and trying to fix it. Remind you that the cluches have already been replaced, the computer has been updated, and the computer has been reprogramed. When I called today they said that they had to keep it over night. This is totally ridiculous and this is a new vehicle!!! of the almost seven months that I have owned the Focus it has sit in the shop a total of 20 days. Come on Ford!!!!.

31 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2012 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 05/23/2012

I bought the 2012 Focus around February of 2012. At first I was estatic and the car ran great. However, just a few months after I bought it the car started griding at low speeds had a lot of trouble going up a hill to the point it wants to stall. At one point I did get up the hill, but the car didn't seem to recover and about 2 minutes later the car did stall driving about 30 mph and we had to glide it through traffic and into a parking lot. The car would not drive for at least 15 minutes, and the check engine light came on. By the time I got it to the dealership the light had gone off, and they told me they couldn't "duplicate the issue", and that if the light had went off there wasn't anything they would be able to find. The grinding noises continued, and I complained everytime I brought it in for an oil change. It also started acting lethargic when making turns (specifically left turns). The car was brought into the dealership at least two more times over the same issue, had a reprogramming done, and it still continued to make noises, jerk, grind, shift widly, etc. Around may of this year (2014) I was stopped on a steep hill and the car started rolling backwards. At first it seemed normal because I applied the brake, but when I moved to the gas the car started rolling backwards in drive and would not stop until I applied the brake again. I almost hit the person in back of me. I insisted Ford fix the issue, and after having the car for almost a week they again said they couldn't duplicate the problem. The same issue happened two weeks later and I received the same answer. I have left messages for the manager over the whole dealer, and he won't return my calls. I am about to take the car back again since I only have around 300 miles of my warranty left, and the car has been having many issues lately. And then I'm going to call a lawyer and the news.

32 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2012 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 03/14/2012

I bought a 2012 Ford Focus sedan a couple weeks ago the next day I noticed slow jerky shuttering accerleration when at a complete stop then trying to acclerate. I did not think of anything was wrong until I researched it online finding similar complaints this is a problem and now the car is at the dealership and they currently have it. Next there is a grinding noise while driving and turning sounds an example would be metal to metal on the brakes is the sound and last loose mirror when lifting the tab down to look at my daughter in the back seat the whole mirror goes down istead of slightly moving.

34 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2001 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 08/22/2007

Bought new in '01 Ford Focus. Noticed right off brakes would make a grinding noise and squeak. Tires were worn real bad on inside on one front size since we bought it. Repeated alignments with no improvement. Still experience this problem. Started experiencing problems with it missing during acceleration. Check engine light came on in February 2005 and took it to the dealership. They replaced sensors that had recall, was recall code p0401. Engine light stayed on. They said that we were using gas that was dirty and waiting too late to put gas into the car and that was why it was stalling. We paid $272. 98 for them to replace this whole section that had to do with the fuel being filtered. Car loses power and stutters going around curves with even over a half a tank of gas. Stalling to the point we must pull over into the emergency lane afraid of accident! I own car I bought brand new and it jerks and sputters like some piece of crap from jd byrider! everytime we start the car you smell oil burning for15 minutes afterwards. Had it checked no leaks or anything could be found. April of 2005 noticed when the car idled at a traffic light the thermostat would show shoot up showing it was running hot! took it in to the dealership and they found anti-freeze leaking. Was told the thermostat housing and thermostat had to be replaced. Retested it and was told problem solved. Our bill was $375. 00. This was first brand new car and was taken well care of, it only has around 78,000 miles on the odometer. I was told there was a silent recall on these for the engine problems and they were being fixed for no cost to the owner. We were not notified of a recall and paid for all of this out of pocket . Car is paid off now and cannot enjoy having a paid off car with low mileage because we are scared to drive it and bought a new car that was safe to drive around with our kids! time goes on and it is getting worse. Sometimes not wanting to start at all! engine still stalls despite all these repairs.

The current mileage was 54,019 and failure mileage was 50,759. Updated 01/02/08 the consumer stated the vehicle squeaked and vibrated and when the brakes were applied there was a grinding noise. The engine mount was replaced, due to it being broken. The shifter squeaked. The rims were bent and the tires were out of balance. Updated.
