1 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 03/04/2020

I bought this car from private seller. On the drive home I turned on ac and noticed a surge so I turned the air off. After getting the car home I filled the tank as it was almost empty when I purchased the car. The car began to surge forwards and backwards at an idle, and then began to surge while driving. Check engine light came on and codes indicated it was a misfire, so did a tune up (changed spark plugs and coils) only to have the issue get worse. The car is now almost stalling and surging hard. Car is very slow to accelerate and feels to have no power while attempting to get up to even in town speeds(25-30mph) car is undrivable safely at this point and I have not even owned 2 months. Surging happens at idle, low speeds, freeway speeds, and surges violently when trying to accelerate.

2 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 11/01/2019

The accelerator pedal is unresponsive and the vehicle will move very slowly at first, then unpredictably lunge forward at higher speeds. Occasionally the pedal will immediately respond with rapid acceleration when lightly touched, causing the tires to spin out while taking off from a stop. Altering the way pressure is applied to the accelerator has no effect. This has been happening for over 3 months without any check engine indicators, and only recently when the vehicle had trouble idling did a check engine light come on. The vehicle has been well maintained and lightly driven.

3 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 08/23/2019

The car stops randomly at times and sometimes will not even startup. Check engine light is on and I recently hit someone in front of me due to jerking or lerching while at a stop light. Very dangerous.

7 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 04/27/2015

Kept having issues starting the vehicle along with while driving on the high way not being able to get up to the speed needed. Took it too beechmont Ford in ohio today and because check engine light would come on then go off . When I spoke to somebody I was told $100 for an hour to diagnose then I was told they needed two more hours. I finally get a call and they say I might need an entire new engine ! how is that possible with not even 69 thousand miles on I just purchased the car in August ! how can these cars be out there with such problems? a new engine! all because of code ps305 and ps 316. Not to mention everytime I asked about the recalls being taken care of on my car I never was give an answer clearly.

8 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 04/11/2015

Driving down the interstate in traffic the engine stalls wrench light came on, leaving me with no power to control my speed. As my car quickly reduces speed on a major interstate I attempt to get over to the shoulder out of harms way. This is happened 4 times, the latest time our check engine light came on and stays on. P2104, p2100, p2112, and p0325 codes are present. I have seen Ford has recalled 1. 6 million electronic throttle body in Ford escape, Mercury mariner, and Mercury milan vehicles with the same 3. 0l engine and same electronic throttle body. All Ford has to do is to list the Ford Freestyle as one of these recall vehicles for the etb to be repaired/replaced. This is a very scary situation to be in with children in the car and you have no power to you accelerator to get out of the way of speeding vehicles all around you!! I don't know what to do, very expensive to replace the etb.

Bought it 7/23/2013, day one fine. Day 2, spouse in car, with 3 children, check transmission light, track control light, check engine light, wrench light all came on. . On the highway. Car lost significant power, almost resulting in accident, car bucking and using significant rpms to accelerate . Restarted the car after 3-4 times, lights gone car running smoothly. Day 3, same thing. I've owned it for 6 days! terrified for my family and other drivers with this vehicle. Too many safety complaints on the vehicle/transmission for Ford not to recall. An american company putting americans at risk for harm.

12 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/02/2013

I took my car in to be serviced for maintenance (power steering service and transmission service) to the Ford dealership in thomasville, GA. After a few days my 2005 Ford Freestyle started to display transmission data error, check track control, and check engine lights. I called the company and was advised to bring it in and I did. The alerts were not on at the time but the service man jerry and josh told me they would check my vehicle and let me know what - if anything was wrong. They kept it all day and when I returned to pick it up I was informed that it was fine and they re-serviced my transmission. About two weeks later my car started the same thing all over again while in traffic it seemed not to want to pull off normally with all these alerts lighting up after church one Sunday. I called Ford of course they were closed but the next day was Monday I called and was asked to bring the car back in. This time once it started to do the same things jumping in gear and knocking hard this time the service man who answered my call says they are looking for a transmission and advised me that Ford would pay for half the work and parts. I asked if they didn't cause it why would you offer to pay half. The last time they got my Ford Freestyle they gave me a borrowed vehicle and told my husband 4 days later that the car has electrical problems that they will pay none of the repair. I was told twice my car was fine now my husband just got a new job and no way to get to it because I believe Ford damaged my vehicle and refuses to right their wrong. What can I do now?.

The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

14 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 09/01/2012

For the past few months my car has been lunging forward or backward when going at a low speed. For example, going into or coming out of a parking space, in a drive thru line, or waiting at a traffic light. The problem seem worse when it is hot outside and/or the air is on. Yesterday the problem happen again, engine stalled and when I restarted the car the check engine light came on. I have had a few near misses with the problem, coming close to hitting a little girl in a parking lot and almost running into a car at a drive thru line just to name a couple. I remember hearing about the same problem last year and am very shocked to see that Ford is taking a chance with peoples lives like this, why has there not been a recall issued to fix the problem?.

15 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/18/2012

In June 2011 I had to bring my vehicle in for service, I noticed prior to my vehicle breaking down the vehicle would lurch even thou my foot was not on the accelerator pedal (in forward or reverse). The temp outside was in the low 90's. I had bought this vehicle in the fall of 2010. Now today (18 July 2012) I am once again taking my car in for the same repairs (parts replacement). The temp yesterday was near 90, I had the air on and was backing into a parking spot when my vehicle lurched back instantly without my foot on the accelerator (I had to slam on the brakes) so I did not crash into the other vehicle in the stall behind the one I was baking into. All the sudden the engine stalled; I re-started the vehicle (and the check engine light came on and is now on constantly as it was back in 2011). When I left the parking slot I was in I attempted to go home; the vehicle lurched the whole time I was in the parking lot, once I was on the main road the vehicle would not accelerate normally; also the cruise control would not work. Again; these are the same problems I had in 2011. I crept my car to the superior Ford dealership where I had the work done before. I asked the service dept worker if she knew of any tech-issues or concerns and she said no. . . . I was not buying it.

16 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/22/2012

I have a 2005 Ford Freestyle with 96,987 miles. The car has been having intermittent lunging issues for the past few months. It is only on hot days when I have the a/c on. The lunging happens when I am completely stopped, or backing out of a parking spot, it has happened in the drive through at a fast food restaurant, the bank, etc. But most recently it happened at my daughters school parking lot! I almost hit a child as she was crossing in front of me. The car lunged forward and I had to put my foot on the break and thankfully the car stopped. Needless to say it could have been a much worse outcome. I brought the car to my local Ford dealership. They replaced the throttle body; parts and labor $880. Picked up the car at 6:45pm, all the service tecs had left for the day; so I paid the cashier the $880, got in the car, turned on the ignition and immediately the engine light and wrench light were still on!! I could not believe it! I could not even leave the parking lot. . . The car "bucked" the entire way out. . . I immediately turned around and left my car at the service lot again and dropped of the keys with a note in the night key box. I am so disappointed in my local Ford dealership; I know they never test drove the car prior to them diagnosing the problem nor did they test drive the car after they "fixed" it. I do not know how they could consciously tell me the car was fixed and charge me $880. 00?!?! Ford really needs to step to the plate on this issue and place a recall on these cars. . . . I have loved my car prior to this lunging/surging situation but at this point I will never buy another Ford!!.

17 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/21/2012

While putting the vehicle both into drive and reverse it revs and/or rpms drop, and lunges until I hit the brakes or the motor cuts out and displays engine failure safety. It has done this twice, then a check engine light came on. I will schedule an appointment with the dealership, however it does cause a bit of nerves when it happens.

18 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 04/24/2012

I purchased a used Ford Freestyle 2007 model in April and after having the car that I love and felt safe with my children in, it began to act crazy!! it lunges when pulling in to park or backing out of a parking spot. It scares me now to put my kids in it!!! today after it lunged a couple different times the check engine light came on. While attempting to park at the store I almost hit a parked car and couldn't control the Freestyle!! it seems to be worse if the air is on. After one of the lunging fits today a wrench light came on and then there was no power at all. I pulled over turned it off and restarted it the light went out and power came back! something really needs to be done!!!.

19 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 04/23/2012

After purchasing (as a used car) for my daughter, vehicle began rapid acceleration and 'lurching' unexpectedly when shifting into forward or reverse. After several days, this was compounded by occurring when starting and stopping in traffic during brake application. I had the filters replaced (air and gas) and the problem seemed to have gone away. I asked my dealership, during my first inspection after it's purchase, wether there was a TSB in regard to this issue and would they please check it out. They alleged that they had no record of any defect regarding this issue and no TSB had been issued. They did however refuse to complete the inspection until I allowed them to overhaul the rear brakes w/new rotors for quite a kingly sum! (so much for a promotional 'free inspection'. ) last night I had to venture out and retrieve the vehicle from my little girl after the car kept 'lurching' everytime she used the brake. While she was waiting in an intersection attempting to make a left turn, the car 'lurched' and stalled in front of oncoming traffic. After restarting the car an engine light and a 'wrench' was now visible on the dash, and the car had absolutely no accelerator! due to our flat terrain I was able to bring the car home on an idle at a speed no greater than 10 m. P. H. Once safely home I tried a trick that used to work on the fleet busses I once worked on. That was rapidly turning the ignition switch on-off, on-off repeatedly about 10 (ten) times, then leave switch on and start it. This seemed to have cleared the 'wrench' and the accelerator was restored. The engine light did not clear. I've put tires, struts, strut mounts etc. Into this car to make it safe for my daughter to drive, yet I can't allow her to use it. 4 of 5 cars I own are Fords, 2 being 2006 Freestyles, and this is the only one that I have had a problem with. What recourse do I have now?.

20 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 03/20/2012

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Freestyle. The contact stated that after accelerating from a stop light, the vehicle jerked forward and then stalled. After restarting the engine, the vehicle continued to jerk and decelerate. The vehicle would not accelerate beyond 10 mph. The check engine light constantly illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was notified and stated that there were no recalls or warranties covering the failure. They offered no other assistance. The failure mileage was 69,000.

21 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 10/04/2011

On Tuesday, our car lost engine power in traffic. The check engine light came on and "engine in failsafe mode" appeared on the dash. She turned the car off and on, and it worked fine. She checked online and found identical problems, and solutions in turning the car off and on. I checked online, found identical failures, a longstanding shortage of throttle parts, presumed a defect in the throttle control, found no fhtsa recalls, but discovered surging documented in pe11-018 (opened may 11, 2011). Our car has also had high rpm surges, occurring infrequently, but usually when the engine is cold. Our au pair experienced surging 2 weeks earlier when she backed out of a garage parking lot and bumped another car. Below are representative websites that document 21 instances of sudden power loss and engine warning "failsafe mode" in the Ford Freestyle described as sudden stalling, car going to idle, engine dying, running limp, and going into "neutral. " my wife's experience is consistent with these descriptions. . Read more...

22 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 09/01/2011

The car would lurch forward when at slow speed or idling. Would be very difficult to control at slow speed such as entering a parking lot, garage or turning. Happened continuously for months until we were too concerned about safety or damage to the car or others. Had to keep foot pressed very hard to brake to avoid having the car shoot forward. We knew many other Freestyle owners had been having this very dangerous problem and hoped for a recall but when the engine light went on we could avoid it no longer and had the throttle body replaced. It cost us just over $900 plus tax to replace it.

23 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 08/16/2011

Last September, at about 75,000 miles, my 2007 Ford Freestyle began an engine surge intermittently. The surge happened even when my foot was on the brake and in both drive and reverse. When it happened, the wrench light would come on and, occasionally, the car would shut off. When I restarted the car, it would move very slowly and the speed did not match what the accelerator was telling it to do. I took the car to my mechanic who could not identify the issue, nor could he recreate it in his shop. Over the winter, the car stopped having the issue; however, during the spring, when I began using the air conditioner, the issue started again. I tried changing the oil and had fluids checked, thinking this would help but to no avail. This continued all summer and was especially problematic if I was stopped in traffic or trying to park. Additionally, it was very stressful for me as a driver and frightening for my children. Last Tuesday evening, after it sat during my children's open house, the Freestyle began surging immediately upon driving it. The wrench and check engine lights turned on and the car turned off. When we turned it back on, the check engine light remained on and the car moved very slowly. When I started the car the next morning, the check engine light was on and the air conditioner would not work. I took my Freestyle to another, highly recommended mechanic, who has diagnosed (based on the codes and his experience) that the car needs a new throttle body.

24 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 08/01/2011

Vehicle will lunge and jerk while backing or under braking. Engine will rev and then stall as well. Check engine light with come on or it will go into "fail-safe" mode. Took it to a local Ford dealership and they advised it needed a new throttle body. After researching the issue we discovered this is a common problem with this model and year.

25 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/31/2011

The 2007 Ford Freestyle will sometimes lurch forward or backwards from a stop. In all cases the car was initially at a stop with my foot on the brake and when I took my foot off the brake, but before placing my foot on the accelerator, the car lurched forward if in drive or backwards if in reverse. The car usually lurched about five feet before I was able to stop it. Sometimes the lurching was followed by the vehicle stalling and in the worst case the vehicle stalled, the check engine light and the service required light both turned on and I was unable to re-start the vehicle for several minutes. The lurching seems to be more of a problem on hot days.

26 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/28/2011

Vehicle has a sudden jump in acceleration even when driver is pressing on the brake pedal. It feels as if both the brake and accelerator are being pressed and the car is in conflict. Then the idle seems to drop either to a point of the vehicle dying or almost stalling. When restarted (sometimes this takes 2-3 tries to keep it running) or idle evens out the rpms and acceleration are delayed for some time. While pressing on the accelerator (even pushing almost to the floor) the vehicle will not increase in speed (in a normal response time-within 3-4 miles) and rpms top out at 2000. This happens at both low speeds and when attempting to acheive highway speeds. The trigger for this is typically a sharp turn. This also results in the check engine light coming on and giving diagnostic codes of p061b and p2106 which I have been unable to find a description of these codes. This has happened once every 4-6 weeks to begin with, but has increased in frequency to 3-4 times a month. I have not replaced the throttle body but that appears to be the common fix as reported by others experiencing this problem. After leaving the car sit for several hours and restarting the next day or 4-5 hours later the problem is not apparent until the next time.

27 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/23/2011

Car accelerated unexpectedly, to the point of having to hold the brake while the tires were still spinning in the gravel. After this the dashboard wrench and check engine light came on. Car also stopped while in traffic several times. After taking car to Ford dealership for service, we were told the throttle body was malfunctioning and caused this problem. While the car is still under warranty we were advised this part was not covered under the warranty at a cost of $700. 00 to us. We have no problem with the dealership, our problem is with Ford motor company. Why is there no recall!! this is a dangerous situation.

28 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/16/2011

I drive a 2006 Ford Freestyle. I would like to report that when the car has been running and it is a hot day when placed in reverse it will accelerate on it's own and then the motor will die causing the check engine light to come one. Typically if I turn it off and wait a few minutes it will come back on light free, but there has been two occasions when it has not. The first I took it for a diagnostics where I was told to take it to Ford that it seemed to be a transmission issue, Ford told me that they were not sure but they cleared out the sensor to give it a good wash if it happened again. It has happened again only this time the engine dying to acceleration ration has increased and a good car wash has not helped the issue. I am becoming very concerned before the acceleration was only in reverse now it is occurring in drive as well and happening more frequently. I have plans to take it to my local Ford dealership however I do not have high hopes for answers as they were not all that helpful the first time.

29 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/12/2011

Car suddenly accelerates on its own. Happens in very hot weather, a/c on, in idle, no contact is being made with accelerator pedal, car stalls, when restarted engine light and wrench lights are on and car does not run properly. Feels like it is in first gear and doesn't go above 60mph.

33 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/02/2011

I purchased my 2007 ff Dec of 2010. Three months after purchase, I noticed mild acceleration sometimes without applying my foot to the pedal. It became progressively worse by mid June. So much so that I contacted drivetime where I purchased the car & they gave me some transmission shop to take it to, only be told that it was normal for that particular transmission. Well, by 2012, the uninitiated acceleration has become so bad that a few months ago my car accelerated on its own & ran slam into the back of a lady's car causing more than $2000 worth of damage. I tried to explain to police that my car accelerated abruptly without me doing anything but slightly lifting my foot from the brake (never touching the gas). He didn't give me a ticket but said it was still my fault. My kids call the car a transformer but it is the worse trying to keep it from plunging forward or backward & hitting something or someone! I have to make absolute sure no one is around when I am in shopping lots because I am afraid when the car takes off backwards from parking spaces. I usually have to slam on brakes but then the car shuts off &on comes the engine light. Something has to be done about this dangerous problem with the Ford Freestyle!!!.

34 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 05/02/2011

When stopping or taking off car surges whether your backing up or at a stop light. They said it was the throttle body, check engine light on when stopped at red light can only inch forward.

35 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 05/01/2011

My 2005 Ford Freestyle surges violently after warming up when the transmission is in drive and you come to a stop. The car lurches forward quickly and without warning several feet and when you try to brake to stop the forward progress, it usually dies and gives the "wrench" check engine light. It will not restart until you turn the ignition off and back on. It does this mostly during warm to hot weather. Rarely through the cool or cold weather.
