2 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/29/2013

Over the last couple of years, I've noticed that the vehicle would jump a little when shifted into gear. Occasionally, the same little lurch would happen at a stoplight. Today, while stopped at idle the engine repeatedly revved over the course of about 10 seconds causing the vehicle to jump forward even with the brakes applied. Shortly after, a similar problem occurred, but not as pronounced as the previous event. After the incident, the performance of the engine seemed to have degraded and the vehicle was only able to accelerate very slowly.

3 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 01/09/2013

On February 11th I had the recall done that reflashed computer and cleaned throttle body. The 12th and 13 it was unseasonably warm and the vehicle ran great. On the 14th the vehicle would not move at all. The temp was below 15 degrees. I could not drive my car for a month. When the temps went up into the 20's the car ran fine. I called the dealer to report the problem and was informed that the recall could only be completed once. On March 7th I cleaned the throttle body myself and found a ring of carbon around the butterfly. After cleaning the car was running good again. This was less than 400 miles after the recall had been completed. The symptoms of the jerking have gone away with the cleaning. The continuous problem seems to be the engine and malfunction light will come on and the vehicle reduces power and speed. Seems to be at lower temperatures. Yesterday it was 20 out and it did this. I have inspected the air and vacuum hoses to the throttle body and cannot find any loose, or broken. I have sprayed around throttle body gaskets while vehicle is running and can find no vacuum leaks. I don't think this is completely a throttle body issue. I believe the cvt transmission is to blame. In November I had the transmission fluids and sump filter changed. I did this because of the complaints of early transmission failure. Usually the failure occurs when vehicle is under load, ie going up hills etc. And appears to be temperature related.

4 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/18/2012

When driving at low speeds (5-10 mph), whether in forward or reverse, the car will lunge forward (or backward if in reverse). This has happened at least 10 times over the last 4 days, resulting in several near-miss accidents with vehicles, as well as almost hitting a pedestrian multiple times. The engine lunging has only occurred at low speeds, mostly when the temperatures are above 85 degrees. The engine lunging occurs when I'm driving at low speeds, such as when I'm backing out of a parking spot, or driving in traffic in which I'm driving at a low speed. The time before last, it was in the school parking lot when I was picking up my son from summer school. Both these times, a pedestrian was almost hit when the car lunged forward. Today, I was in traffic in the walmart parking lot when the car lunged forward, almost causing me to hit the car in front of me. When this happens, the check engine symbol lights on the dashboard, as well as the engine failsafe mode coming on. I have to turn the car completely off and back on to get these lights off.

5 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/12/2012

While driving in 90 degree + temperatures, we have noticed that the car lurches while reversing from a parking spot, or at a stop. Braking does stop the unexpected acceleration, however it still feels unsafe. This has happened 3-6 times, and as recently as today (7/17/12). It is not driver error - again has happened enough that we are able to analyze that the foot is not on the gas. Check engine light comes on when this occurs.

6 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/06/2012

On a hot day (98 degrees) when driving with the air conditioning on in my 2005 Ford Freestyle it surged ahead in the mall parking lot and I almost hit someone walking in front of the car. This vehicle has acted like this on hot days when the a/c is on and running in the past. You have to be very careful and aware that this will happen, if someone was to borrow my car I would be afraid that they would run someone over. It happens in both forward and reverse and usually only at slow speeds/idle speed. Its dangerous in parking lots when you are both pulling into the parking spots you have to brake quickly or you'll speed up and hit a parked car in front of you, then backing out of the spot it does the same thing. This is a serious problem and needs to be taken care of. One time last year on a long drive through philadelphia this happened and the car stalled and locked up at a green light. We just want to know how to fix it.

7 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/01/2012

The vehicle 's engine just shut off. After pulling off the road I tried several times to start the vehicle, to no avail. I waited approximately 20 minutes before trying again. The engine started, but would not go in gear. After several attempts of trying to put it in gear, it suddenly worked! knowing I had a 250 mile trip back home, I was very leery about taking a chance with it. Fortunately, I made it. I contacted my mechanic and made an appointment to get the vehicle in the shop the next day. The diagnostic machine was used and it "threw" several different codes, rendering it undiagnosable? the mechanic called Ford motor corp. And they said they would get back with him. After 2 weeks of waiting, I called Ford myself and was treated extremely rude and also was told my mechanic was not qualified to diagnose this problem! two months later, I get a letter saying the 'throttle body" needed to be "cleaned out". . . At their expense. This procedure was done and I am continuously having problems with the transmission, especially when it gets cold (around 32 degrees). The vehicle will run after warming the engine (shutting it down/restarting repeatedly) before it decides to finally run "normal". I was told this resets the code??? I will never buy another Ford, they do not back their product or their name! Ford has been made aware of these problems with this cvt transmission and they need to correct the problem there are numerous complaints and we, the consumer, need help with this on going issue. Most can not afford to handle this repair and those who did, had not resolved this issue after spending thousands of dollars! I believe, when I purchased this vehicle (used) in 2007, Ford knew of this issue, but gave no knowledge to me. I did ask about this cvt transmission because I had never heard of it before. They informed me that it was the greatest transmission ever. . . Really!!!!.

8 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/29/2012

After filing a complaint on or about 6/28/12 (odi number 10463545) in regard to another 2006 Ford Freestyle I own and operate, I now have to report the identical defect with my other 2006 Freestyle. After parking my first Freestyle until repairs can be made, this Freestyle (now being reported) has become the major transportation vehicle of the household. Now this vehicle has begun surging in rpms and 'lunging' whenever the brake is released. This occurrence was in 95 degree weather with the air conditioner running. I don't know if the outside temperature plays a role in the defect occurring but both vehicles were at maximum operating temperatures, had been running for a length of time whereas a higher 'cold engine' idle would have no bearing on the occurrences. Since I haven't an extended warranty on the first vehicle I reported on 6/28/12 (a recent purchase), I have ordered an electronic throttle body w/tps (non-heated which is obviously a Ford supercession) and will attempt to replace it myself as a cost savings measure. Since filing my issue I've found via the internet that others with the same problem have paid upward of $1,200. 00 to have this work performed. After ordering my parts I have discovered that this particular throttle body was installed on 2005-2007 Ford Freestyles as well as their Ford five hundred (of which I also own a 2007 model year of with approx 20k miles). Is there any truth to the rumor that bad luck always comes in three's? I certainly hope not!! as of earlier this morning (7/01/12), with a cool temperature of 75 degrees f. , this defect did not re-occur, but my other vehicle also began to 'act up' as an intermittent problem that eventually wouldn't go away.

9 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/11/2012

While backing up the car lunges when foot is still on the brake. Car will occasionally lunge forward when pulling out of a parking spot or when stopped at traffic light or stop sign. Very unsafe!!!!!! must make sure my foot is on the brake hard when stopped or be ready to quickly brake when backing up. The ac is sometimes on when this happens and the temperature is in the upper 80's. We live in colorado springs, CO and 80 degree temp are pretty hot here. Lately it has been in the 90 degree + range and the issue has been happening more. My wife mostly drives this car and our teenage daughter, new drive with a permit, is learning to drive, this is not safe!!!. Please put pressure on Ford to fix this safety item. Seems like may others are having the same issue. Will it take for someone to be seriously hurt or killed before this gets looked at? how many accidents major or minor has this caused? how many insurance rates have increased because of these accidents? please do something about this!!!!!!!.

10 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 04/09/2012

My complaint mirrors verbatim others related to the may 2011 investigation opened into the "lunging" at slow speeds for the 05-07 Ford Freestyle. The ac, hot temps, & lunging. One occurrence traveling 60mph & began to "stall out" & slow on major highway with three children in car. Any pressure on fuel pedal no result. Busy traffic, could only travel max 35-40mph. Put flashers on & struggled to make it to repair shop. Turned off ac in 100 degree heat to get any kind of response from engine. I was worried & feared for mine & my children's safety. Vehicle would barely accelerate thru intersection after stopping for red light. Finally made it to shop. Vehicle was placed on machine. Codes appeared: p061b alter fuel control module error, p2106 throttle actuator forced limited. Took vehicle to Ford house & explained issues as well as codes from previous shop. Was told would be $100 for Ford to hook up for a dx. If the codes I had were same, would cost est $800 to repair. As mom of 3 & who drives great distances for work, this repair ASAP. Have had many occasions if not had foot firmly on brake the vehicle would've caused a wreck at stop light, pulling into, out of parking lots, etc. Car literally drives itself in d/r at 10mph with no acceleration at all after placing in d/r. On 8-12-12 was in drive thru line & car lunged at high rate of speed forward after barely lifting foot off brake. Came mm from slamming into vehicle in front. Put car in p & the vehicle died. Wrench/engine light came on. Turned engine off, turned ac off & restarted the car. I can only imagine what would've happened if this had occurred at a stop light in a busy intersection? this issue is a fatality waiting to happen. This cannot be a fluke random issue if you have rec'd 238 prior complaints regarding the exact same issue. I urge NHTSA to place a recall, if for the only reason to save lives. Updated 08-03-12 updated 09/07/2012.

11 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 08/01/2011

For quite some time, my 2005 Ford Freestyle lunges and will stall when operating at low speeds (parking, and backing up) with the air conditioning on. It either lunges forward or backwards (if in reverse), then stalls and goes into failsafe mode. This is very annoying. The car should not do this. Now it's happening when idling at stop lights or in traffic with the air conditioning on. . . Which is great in rush hour traffic in florida when it's 95 degrees outside. . . Having to drive around with the windows down because I can't drive with air on or car will stall is highly annoying. With all the other complaints this should be a recall. The car has 147k miles on it (mostly highway) and I love my car. The lunging is scary though. I'm having to look for parking spaces with limited neighbors so we don't lunge into another car.

12 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/24/2011

Fore 4 years the car has surged when placing the care in reverse, but I always thought it was the transmission. Two days ago the car surged froward 3 times and I was inches from hitting the vehicle in front of me I turned the car off and back on and it was fine. Yesterday I placed the car in reverse and it surged back wards so forcefully I could almost not contain it with the breaks. Today the car surged back again but I was ready or it and the car stalled stating "failsafe engine mode" I again I turned the car off and on and it worked with out a problem. All 3 times the car was idle in 90+ degree weather for >5 min.

13 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/21/2011

My car lurches forward if my foot is not fully on the brake or when I begin to accelerate from a stopped position. This has happened several times. My check engine light is now on. I was running my ac in 100 degree weather this last time.

14 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/04/2011

Engine revs and vehicle lurches while placing the car in reverse, even with foot firmly on the brakes. Appears to be worse when air conditioner is on. Vehicle has lost virtually all power while driving. When this happens, you can floor the gas peddle but the vehicle won't go over 10-15mph. Pulling over to the side of the road, turning vehicle off, waiting 15 seconds or so, then restarting, seems to reset the vehicle to a more functionable level. The vehicle also has an extensive exhaust smell and it is currently at the shop for a $566 repair for the diagnostic exam and that diagnosis indicating that the egr valve needs to be replaced. I called Ford and they do not have a current recall for the egr valve, or throttle body-which seems to be a correlated problem within the two.

15 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/06/2011

Purchased used Ford Freestyle December 2010. Ran fine until warm weather and use of air conditioner. With a/c on, the electronic throttle control seems to often greatly overshoot the correct setting when shifting from neutral to drive or reverse, which causes a significant engine rpm increase and a momentary "lunge" if the brake is not applied very firmly. Many vehicles do this to a minor extent but the Freestyle is far and away the worst I've ever seen. This does cause unanticipated vehicle movement and could injure a child, passerby etc or cause a vehicle to enter an intersection. My wife is certainly unnnerved by it. Effect is in fact sometimes there in cool weather but to a much lesser extent. Reading forums and thinking about this (I'm an engineer and sae member) it may very well be something like a worn throttle position sensor interacting with an ecu software glitch, may very well be fixable in software. Annoyingly the tps on this vehicle is integrated into the throttle body or I'd just replace the tps.

16 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 08/18/2010

The vehicle on a very hot day 95 degrees out with the a/c on high was put into reverse with foot on the brake and the car surged backwards and went into saftey mode. Had to drive the car home in saftey mode. My wife says it happend a few times to her also. The upper motor mount on the engine has totally fell apart, the rubber bushing dried out and is gone. Called Ford and they told me the part is $230. 00.

17 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/18/2010

2005 Ford Freestyle limited awd. The vehicle, when a/c unit is on and outside temperature is between 80 and 90 degree f, surges forward violently, approx. 1 to 2 feet, while trying to slow down or stop. Then engine goes into safe mode and stalls. When researching this problem on the website myfordfreestyle. Com there was information about the possible cause of the surge. The Ford service dept. Recommends replacing the throttle body due to excess sludge build up inside the unit. $700. 00 plus fix. I took my car into the Ford service dept. In my area, gave the description of the problem, they said it was probably the throttle body and that I would have to get this replaced and that the car was unsafe to drive due to the surging. Ford says the throttle body is on back order.

18 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/07/2010

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Freestyle. The contact was driving approximately 5 mph in reverse into a residential garage. As the contact depressed the brake pedal, the vehicle began to abnormally accelerate. The contact was able to stop the vehicle with repeated pressure to the brakes. The failure occurred six times. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnosis and the throttle body was replaced. In addition, on a separate occasion there was a complete loss of engine power. The failure reoccurred with the illumination of the check engine warning light indicator. The dealer replaced the exhaust gas recirculation and switch assembly. The failure mileage was 79,000.

19 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/01/2010

The car surges, jumps, sometimes acclerates and I put on the brakes and it will sometimes die. Mainly happens when I am in reverse/forward or the air conditioning is running. Also, does this when I am idling in a parking lot or at a traffic light. I have taken it to auto repair shops and they think it is the computer. Couldn't afford to do a new computer so thought I would hold out, since it doesn't do it all the time. Now it is starting to get worse. I turn the air off when starting out. My wrench light comes on and I don't have much power and my rpms get up to 4 when driving 50mph. Turn the car off and it is like it never happened. The car is dangerous to drive with my kids not knowing when it will happen in busy traffic,,will it die and someone hit me? this isn't normal and I have found out my car isn't the only one doing this same thing. Will it really take someone getting very hurt for something to be done? what justice is that and knowing that this problems exist. First time buying a Ford and will probably be the last time. I don't trust them. You have a problem you fix it. That is integrity & trust. Love for someone from Ford to come with me for a day and ride in bumper to bumper traffic and see how our day goes.

20 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 12/08/2009

My 2006 Ford Freestyle lurches forward at 0 to 5 mph. The lurching occurs even if I do not press the pedal. It is dangerous at intersections and when trying to park. A mechanic replaced the egr valve and it is still lurching forward. . From what I have found on the internet it seems that many others are having the same problem with this vehicle.

21 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 05/12/2009

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Freestyle. While backing out of the driveway, the vehicle accelerated when the brake pedal was depressed. There were no warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection and they stated that the failure was contributed to the egr valves and throttle body. The repair part was unavailable due to a massive back order. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 52,000 and current mileage was 60,000. Updated 10/06/09. Power steering pump replaced for noise. Throttle body replaced for surging condition, also reprogramed pcm updated 10/08/09.

22 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 08/01/2007

Vehicle is a 2006 Ford Freestyle limited all wheel drive. . . Often, when idling with the transmission in drive and foot on brake, the engine rpms will increase without pressing the accelerator and the car will lunge forward until extreme pressure is applied to the brake pedal. Sometimes, especially when in reverse and the car lunges as described, the car will stall after lunging and the check engine light will come on. Upon restarting the engine, the car will run, but in a limited capacity with the check engine light on. Stopping the car, turning the car off, and then restarting the car, clears the check engine light and the car will operate normally. This seems to occur more often when ambient temperature is around or above 90 degrees fahrenheit. Since we purchased the car new in 2006, this has occurred at least 50 times.
