Failure Date: 06/29/2023

The contact's mother owns a 2012 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle experienced a loss of power steering assist. The check engine and power steering warning lights were illuminated. The contact used an odb reader and determined that the power steering module was defective and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, and it was determined that the electric power assisted steering (epas) needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The contact related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 15v340000 (steering) however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was approximately 30,000.

2 Electric Power Assist Steering System problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2022

The contact owns a 2012 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 10 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver and the power steering assist warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed that the power steering assist needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the local dealer initially told him that repairs would be covered under warranty for electric power assisted steering (epas), however, he was then informed by the local dealer that it would be at his own expense. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and also confirmed that the repair would not be covered by the warranty and advised to file a complaint with NHTSA. The approximate failure mileage was 134,000.

3 Electric Power Assist Steering System problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2022

The contact owns a 2012 Ford Fusion. The contact stated while driving approximately 30 mph, the electric power steering assist failure warning light illuminated and the vehicle lost power steering functionality. The vehicle was safely driven to the local dealer to be diagnosed. The contact stated that the power steering assist and the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 108,000.

4 Electric Power Assist Steering System problem

Failure Date: 02/25/2022

The contact owns a 2012 Ford Fusion. The contact stated while driving at 59 mph, the steering wheel locked inadvertently. The message "service power steering now" was illuminated. 5 Electric Power Assist Steering System problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2022

The contact owns a 2012 Ford Fusion. The contact stated while driving 55 mph, the power steering indicator light illuminated. The contact drove home without power steering functionality. 6 Electric Power Assist Steering System problem

Failure Date: 01/04/2022

The contact's son owns a 2012 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while driving at 15 mph, the steering wheel inadvertently lost power steering. The power steering warning light and the steering assist warning light illuminated. The contact's son was able to continue to drive the vehicle to his residence by manually steering the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the steering rack and pinion had failed. The dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle would be repaired at his own expense because the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 15v340000 (steering). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 95,000.

7 Electric Power Assist Steering System problem

Failure Date: 08/27/2021

The contact owns a 2012 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle and reversing, the steering wheel failed to turn. The service power steering message was displayed. The contact called the local dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified and referred the contact to the NHTSA. The contact stated that the failure was related to NHTSA campaign number: 15v340000 (steering). The failure mileage was approximately 74,000.

8 Electric Power Assist Steering System problem

Failure Date: 08/04/2021

The contact owns a 2012 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that the power steering would fail to operate while driving at various speeds. Excessive force was needed to steer the vehicle as the power steering assist warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact had taken the vehicle to a dealer where he was given an estimate for the diagnostic which the contact declined. The contact then called conroy motors (1457 NY-78, java center, NY 14082) where he was given the same information as the previous dealer. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA campaign number: 15v340000 (steering) which he linked to the failure. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 154,000.

9 Electric Power Assist Steering System problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2021

The contact owns a 2012 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while her husband was pulling into a parking space, the power steering message appeared on the instrument panel causing her husband to have to use excessive force to steer the vehicle. Her husband had taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic where a temporary fix was performed however, the failure returned soon after repair. The contact called the dealer and she was informed that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 15v340000 (steering). The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and referred her back to the dealer for assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 99,759.
