The electronic steering assist system failed going approximately 45 mph. The system reverted to manual steering mode.
The steering gear failed for the second time at 113000 miles. Cost for replacement and four ball joints was $2000. 00. Some ball joints replaced at approx 70000 miles and steering gear replaced under recall at approx 93000 miles. It only lasted 20000 miles. Online it looks like Ford has had this problem for a number of years. The last time iit failed it was in motion. When is the NHTSA going to force the repair of this item?.
I stopped at turnpike rest stop. When I started the car, a "service power steering now" light was ulliminated (see attached image) and the steering was not working properly. I was unable to back the car out of the parking space due to the need to make a hard turn to the left or right. The car was towed to a local Ford dealership and the car will be evaluated on Monday. I checked my car's VIN online and no recalls are shown. However, my online research reveals that is a power steering recall (or similar warranty item) issued in 2015 (#15v340000). I see many, many reports of this same steering failure on 2012 Ford Fusion models with owners reporting a failure of Ford to cover the problem despite this being a known (and potentially dangerous) failure since at least 2015. What steps are being taken to require Ford to repair all affected vehicles? many complaints posted on this site allege the manufacture refused to repair the consumer's 2012 Fusion, despite the obvious known and widespread dangerous issue.
Steering assist error and advancetrac error; steering failed upon starting the car and unable to safely drive.
4 times in the past month, my vehicle has experienced a loss of power steering assist while in motion which causes the steering wheel to lock and I am unable to turn. While this is happening, the car beeps and a light comes on the dashboard that says something like steering wheel assist failure or power steering assist. This has occured 4 times and is very dangerous as I am unable to turn the wheel to turn the vechiel to the side of the road for safety. The car is in motion all while the steering wheel shuts down. This will end up causing an accident one day. I have reviewed my VIN and I do not see an active recall for this, however when inputing my car information, it shows that there was a recall for the same issue for cars: 2012 Ford Fusion and I believe my car should have been part of this recall. All 4 times that it has happened, the car was in motion, in a city street while turning the wheel to make a turn. Although I do not have a picture to show at the moment, next time it happens I will have one should you contact me and need an image of what is occuring.
While driving my children to school, and already getting close to the drop off location (inside the school and where children already walking throughout the parking lot) the steering wheel locked up making it impossible to steer while my car was in motion. Luckily I was just traveling at about 5mph, and there was nobody inform of my at the time and I did not run over any one. When this happened, a message came on the dashboard that read something about steering failure. I had to drive up to a safe location where I left my vehicle parked and had to call someone to pick me up. This is my wife's car but on this day I took my kids to school. Had it been her driving or if I or her were traveling at a higher speed I fear there would have been a very different outcome.

The electric steering failed as described in a recall for other 2012 Ford Fusions, but not my own.
The electric steering unit failed as described in a recall for other Ford Fusion vehicles, but mine specifically was not covered under recall.
The power steering assist fault message appeared in the odometer display. This could not be reset by turning off the ignition for 10 seconds and turning on the ignition again. This message has been intermittent for 6 months. It would appear often with first start up on rainy and rainy on cold days. Never occurred while driving. I drove the car to a local repair shop. The steering takes a great effort to turn the wheel. Had a near miss accident with wood trash on the highway. The repair shop said this could be covered by an extended recall. The Ford dealers we called said their system was down not able to check VIN for recall. It has about 83000 miles and 6 years old. The steering failure is a significant safety defect. I've driven cars before without power steering - easy compared to this fail. This failure is extremely unsettling feeling when trying to make a curve or turn. Check back later to see if Ford repaired this.

Was driving to drop my 7 month old daughter off at my mom's house on way to work and steering wheel suddenly got tight. Service activetrac light came on and I fought to get car to mom's house - very uncomfortable feeling with my infant in the car, especially with no warning signs. Went to leave house and when I started the car, the "service power steering now" light appeared on the dash and there was no power steering at all. Called the dealer and they suggested to have it towed. They ended up having to replace entire steering rack due to steering motor failure.
The contact owns a 2012 Ford Fusion. While driving at various speeds, the power steering would suddenly malfunction causing the steering wheel to become very difficult to turn. Warning light came on and within the next 3 miles, steering failed, resulting in loss of control and significant increased effort in steering in order to get to safety.
The power steering quit without warning, luckily the car was just getting under way. The car had previously indicated a fault with the system (the warning light on the dash would flash for a moment, then go out) the dealer said 'no code had been stored' so they could not diagnose any further. My concerns are 1) the steering could have failed on the highway and caused harm or death 2) with the available technology today, why doesn't the computer 'store a code' so the dealer can diagnose and repair before a deadly incident occurs?.
Driving at approx. 62 mph on highway when warning light for "service advancetrac sytem and peower steering assist failure. Very dangerous issue, lucky I did not hit another car as was changing lanes with concrete barier to my laft and fast moving vehicles to my right. I have researched tis car and foung numerous complaints similar to mine. Ford has car today and says steering gear bad , lucky I bought extended warranty. Ford should be required to replace these. This is a serious issue totally safety related. This vehicles has only 41,000 miles.
