The vehicle was then towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the power steering control module and the rack and pinion steering needed to be replaced. 2 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

My car is having trouble with the power streeting wheel. As I was driving my car the wheel tighten up and it was hard for me to turn. Power streering at fault is what flashes on the dashbored. 3 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2020

I was driving my 2012 Ford Fusion sel down a street on October 4th 2020 near where I live and this alarm started going off and it alerted me the power steering assist fault and I lost my steering and hit a curb. Luckily I didn't do anymore damage or hit someone. I drug it home and had a wrecker pick it up to take it to the nearest Ford dealership. They diagnosed it as a faulty steering box or rack and pinion, it all needs to be replaced to the tune of 1868. 00. The Ford dealership found a recall from 2015 that describes this same issue in 2011-2012 Ford Fusions but for some reason my VIN was not included, maybe by mistake seems how it's the same part that Ford knew was causing problems. It's just a good thing that I didn't hit someone and kill them with Ford knowing this was a issue with these cars and didn't do anything about it. I hope you will do your do diligence on these issues and fix every one of them before someone does get hurt. Trying to fork over 1800 in a time like this is very tough and I hope you can make it right with all involved. Thanks for your time. Marc sobeski.

4 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 09/03/2020

2012 Fusion sel, 3. 0l v6, 112,000 miles: on 9-3-2020 I was pulling out of the local shopping center. As I was proceeding it appeared that the engine had stalled. In actuality the engine did not stall and there was a fault message displayed "power steering assist fault". I proceeded home with great difficulty steering the car. On the way home I stopped at the local autozone car care center to review the owner's manual for a possible explanation and remedy. The manual stated that there was no service for the power steering system on this model Fusion (fully electric). I proceeded out of the parking lot and as soon as I went forward a second alarm displayed "service advancetrac". Now the display toggled between these two alarms. The day prior to my service appointment I noticed that when I started the car only the "service advancetrac" alarm displayed, but the vehicle still had no power steering. The following morning I took the vehicle to the Ford dealership for diagnostics. Later that day I was contacted by the service advisor who informed me that the power steering rack and pinion assembly needed to be replaced. The cost was going to be in excess of $2000. By now I had done some research into this and found that there was a recall for this very problem (NHTSA id# 15v340000, Ford id# 15s18). I relayed this information to the Ford service advisor and he informed me that "yes there was a recall but my VIN# was not included". I am at a loss as to how this vehicle could not be included. The vehicle is very well maintained and has only 112,000 miles of mostly highway driving. I can say with a great deal of certainty that had this occurred on the highway, especially at an exit or entrance ramp, there would have been a different outcome to this. At this time, even after the repair, I am going to be unsure and worried about the vehicle loosing steering control.

5 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

The electric rack and pinion has failed for the second time I contacted Ford the 1st occurrence. . While driving luckily other vehicles was not near !!! other 2012 models have had the problem fixed by Ford but for some reason this specific VIN isn't covered this is a very unsafe situation because as I have read with the other Fusion they recalled some where involved in accidents due to loss of electric assist steering.

Service power steering now there is no power steering at all and the vehicle only has 38,388 miles on it. The dealership wants $1,700 to replace it. I could have been injured severely it there was other vehicles in the area. It went out unexpectedly when I was turning at an intersection. That scenario definitely caught me off guard. I hit the curb slightly and messed up my front bumper because of it. Luckily I had enough strength to turn the wheel and not going over the curb off the road itself. When my power steering went out. It did a little jerk motion to the right right before it completely failed. I feel this is a major safety issue and I should get a complimentary power steering rack and pinion replacement because of this issue. There was a recall for a lot of models, but I am yet to receive one and I keep checking my VIN periodically. For a person with a lack of strength, senior citizen or younger teen, this could be a major safety issue. Please help me regarding this issue. While sitting still or driving the steering will make an audible "clunk" you can hear and feel when turning left or right from the centered position. No code present upon first trip to dealer who recommended rack and pinion replacement. They "updated" the software per the recall specs. Service advancetrac warning came on about a week later and dealer said code c1278 appeared and recommended rack and pinion replacement. Seems like this should fall under the recall of the rack and pinion, but the service dept said it doesn't.

23 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 07/05/2016

My throttle body is giving me issues. It will hesitate and react as if it will stall on occasion when I am on the highway, it will jerk badly. No engine lights appear on my dash, however I was notified by Ford there is a replacement extended warranty, yet that extension does not cover the initial charge from the dealer to check the throttle body out, which is dead wrong of Ford. I believe they should cover any and all charges regarding this the throttle body. In addition my vehicles rack and pinion or pwer steering sueels alot while in driving, ive check fluid levels and they are normal, yet it will make alot of noise.

The mechanic that worked on my car told me he previously worked for Ford and that this was a common problem.

Turning the steering wheel makes a loud grating noise whether the car is sitting still or in motion. We took the car to the dealer for the problem. After checking the car, the mechanic said the rack and pinion is defective. When we contacted the Ford motor company in September 2015, I explained the problem and inquired about a recall. The man said some 2012 Fusions had been recalled for the steering, but this VIN was not. The warranty ended in August 2015, the problem appeared the first week of September 2015.

27 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

I was driving on a highway going about 45mph then the stability control system icon turned on on my dash. I started to slow down and noticed that it took a lot more effort to steer the car. I started to slow to pull over to the side of the road and turning the steering wheel became almost impossible. There were cars behind me that had to come to and unexpected slow as I tried to get off of the road. I was able to pull over onto the side of the road in someones yard and turned the car off. During this time the messages "power steering assist fault" and "service advancetrac" were displaying on my dash. I turned the car off and back on and the same messages would show. I turned the car back off and call aaa to have my car towed on a flatbed to my local Ford dealer, athens Ford. They told me that my rack and pinion needed to be replaced and the wheels realinned. While driving our 2012 Ford Fusion at approxiamtely 45 mph the dashboard warning message "service power steering soon". Within about 5 miles the steering became very difficult and it was obvious that the power steering had failed. The mileage was approximately 48,600 miles. Fortunately the incident did not lead to an accident.

31 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 06/26/2014

While driving the electronic power steering went out making it difficult to steer. A message indicated power steering assist fault. Stopped car and restarted and problem stopped. However it reappeared later on the drive home. I contacted dealer and was immediately scheduled in for warranty repair. The power steering was out even as I dropped it for service. Rack and pinion steering gear assembly was replaced under warranty. Had this not been a warranty repair, the bill would have been nearly $2000. The dealer was very closed lip about thie issue and didn't want to go into detail on what/why or how often this happened. It seemed clear to me when I called that they were familiar with the problem. Even now I have no assurances this was replaced with parts of better quality than the original.

33 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 06/24/2014

I purchased my 2012 Ford Fusion about 4 months ago from a family member who had no problems with the car since owning it new. Since that time I have had an alert come on when I am driving that reads "power steering failure" and the steering wheel becomes really hard to turn. It has happened to me twice and my wife once. When I stop the car and turn the ignition switch off and then start the car back up the system is reset and the warning is not displayed any longer and the power steering works once again. This is very dangerous as my wife had a very hard time turning the wheel to get the car off the interstate when it happened to her. I took the car into my regular mechanic who could not diagnose the problem (he drove it around a long time) and he recommended that I take it in to the Ford dealer. The Ford dealer told me that it was a problem with the rack and pinion and that it would cost $1700 to get it replaced. I refused the repair because I read on this board that this has been a problem with the 2012 Fusions and that others that have taken their car in to get this problem fixed, paid the money for the repair, but still had the same alert come on after the "repair. " it sounds like an electrical problem to me that is reset when the car is turned back on. I expect there to be a recall on this problem as this could be very dangerous. My car only has 81,000 miles on it.

34 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 05/20/2014

Driving down a busy highway one evening, an indicator recommending service on the power steering system lit up. There were no extreme speeds or accidents. Car became too difficult to steer. Ford dealerships have mentioned that this is a common issue, requiring a replacement rack and pinion system. Should be a recall- since steering is essential in order to avoid accidents, damage and injury.

35 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2014

After running errands came home and parked car. Restarted car to go somewhere else and power assist fault message appeared and could not turn steering wheel. Turned car off and read manual. Restarted car and continued on my way. 5-19-2014 drove to ball park. Turned on car to leave. Power steering assist fault message. Turned car off and sat there a few minutes, turned it on an continued on my way. Mileage 16, 760. 5-21-2014. Driving to work at approximately 40 miles an hour. Power steering fault and advantrac trac warning came on. (mileage 17,403) barely able to get the car turned into a parking lot. Sat there a while until car started and drove to dealership. They were unable to get the car in that day and made appointment for 5-22-2014. At dealership, I was first told they didn't know anything about this happening to this model car. I researched and found many incidences of this and took the information to the dealership. They replaced rack and pinion. Dealership did not have part in stock and had to keep car overnight. It seems this is a common problem and the dealerships should have these parts in their inventory at all times. Also, the dealerships do not hire enough mechanics to service all the vehicles in a timely manner. I am very disappointed with Ford motor CO. I purchased this car thinking I was buying a safe car to drive. It is only 2 years old with less than 18,000 miles on it and something as serious as this occurs. I am now wondering what will happen next or even if this will happen again.
