The parking brake freezes in freezing weather. You can still lower (release) the parking brake handle, the warning light in the dash would go off, but the rear right brake stays engaged. This leaves the driver to believe that the brake has been released when in fact it hasn't. This happened to me this past winter. The car felt sluggish as if it was dragging something. About 10 minutes into driving we smelled a burnt smell and heard a metal popping noise from the rear right wheel. We stopped at a gas station to find out what was happening. The right rear brake was burning hot, the burnt smell was very strong, and it continued to make the metal popping noise as it was expanding due to the excessive heat. We had the car towed to the dealer and was told that this problem has to do with the design of the parking brake cable. We were also told to not use the parking brake in winter or it likely would happen again. This is a safety issue that Ford needs to address on because it can lead to the car catches fire.
