Ford Fusion owners have reported 35 problems related to transmission not go into gear (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Ford Fusion based on all problems reported for the Fusion.
129k miles. Transmission slipping out of gear at 70 +/- mph. Pulled into gas station, allowed to cool for 1hr. Transmission would engage momentarily, then slip out of gear and not go into gear again without shutting down vehicle, restart, shift to d, repeat. Seems to hold at low speed so long as there is a constant load on the transmission. Unsafe to replicate at speed. Vehicle not listed in recall 18s32 for evap purge valve, but showed similar symptoms starting around 126k miles. Vehicle scheduled for service for purge valve prior to transmission issue. Maintenace not completed yet.

I was driving highway in sport mode when I could not move shifter out of sport mode so got to red light to try to move my shifter into another gear didn't work so shut car down but car couldn't recognize it was not in park and car wouldn't turn back on and would drift backwards so had to put emergency break on so my car won't drift down hill in middle of highway. I had to have flat bed tow car away to garage, I seen a recall on the 2. 5 Fusion and escape shifter cable but not on 2. 0 which is same exact problem has happened with my 2. 0 Fusion. I do not have recall numbers on hand. .

With no warning I started my car and went to put it in drive and the shifter would move but not go into gear. It felt like the shifter was not attached to anything. Luckily the car was stuck in park, if this would have happened while driving it could of resulted in an accident or worse injuries. I was told there was a recall for this, checked my VIN and it did not show it as an active recall. I contacted my local Ford dealership and they did exactly what I did and run the VIN number telling me my car was not part of the original recall. I don't understand why one car is part of a recall but another is not. I had to pay for my car to be towed and now repaired due to faulty parts by Ford!.
My 2016 Ford Fusion is having problems with the sifter cable where the car can stay in another gear but the car sifter is in park. I got home and put the car in park and my car started rolling backwards. There is a current recall for the sifter cable bushing. I looked at my car sifter cable and the bushing is gone and I can't get my car out of reverse. This is a big safety concern and Ford doesn't want to do any thing. I called Ford for help and they told me there is noting they can do to help me. If they know they have problems with the bushings why don't they include the 1. 5 engine because according to them only they 2. 5 engine has that problem. I am scared that my car is going to roll away and hit something or someone I have to have my cars e brake on just to help me feel safer around my car.
Gear dial stuck in park mode. Gear dial I will not move. When the problem first started then turning the car on and off and trying over and over I was able to get it into gear. This last time that didn't work. Attempted to get the car in neutral using the neutral override method but it failed. Car had to be wenched onto the toeing truck while stuck in gear. Problem began occurring at 40,000 miles. The battery in the car died from leaving the lights on and this seemed to reset the problem and no issues for 6 weeks. Orange wrench warning sign appeared again and now the car is stuck in park and have to tow it to a Ford dealer. I also noticed that when this problem occurred the blue anti theft light constantly flashes. After the battery drained and the problem reset then I accidentally hit the lock button twice and this is when the blue lighy started flashing again and I was unable to get the vehicle out of park mode. When I first purchased the vehicle at 40,000 miles I was driving the interstate and the blue anti theft light began flashing and the car alarm sounded while I was at a 75 mph speed. I had to stop the car, turn it off, hit the unlock button on my key fob to get the. Alarm to stop sounding. I believe the two issues may be related as they happen at the same time. The orange wrench only appears when the car will not go in gear. When the car has easily gone in dear the orange wrench is not present. Again, I am unable to engage the neutral override by using the key in the override slot. The lights will flash on the dial but the car will not go into neutral, it remains stuck. I have tried many times and had others try it as well so I know it's not user error. Car alarm goes off while driving on the interstate.

Transmission not shifting into gear properly making a whinding noise.
When backing from a parking space, the vehicle would not shift to any gear or neutral. No warning or indication of any problem, it just quit right in the middle of a parking lot. Vehicle shifter kept returning to park and would not move! very dangerous. Mechanic said the shift cable broke. I see on here that others have had the same issue and there was a recall up to the 2017 models. I think Ford needs to recall the 2017 models for the shift cable as well because it's obviously an issue. Car has 80k miles. Transmission was replaced at 66k miles. 2017 Ford Fusions are awful and dangerous! do your customers matter, Ford?.

A shifter cable that detaches from the transmission is not allowing the gear state to go into park. However the gearshift position shows it in park.

While in motion on major interstate the vehicle lost acceleration causing traffic to swerve around vehicle as it slowed to a stop. The vehicle was running but would not move in any gear selected. The vehicle had to be towed and left my family stranded on the shoulder. The dealer informed me the transmission failed before first recommended service of 150,000 miles of service. Unable to check fluid due to no dipstick on the model attached to the 1. 5l engine. Dealer claims trans pump went out causing failure.

Tl- the contact owns a 2014 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while driving approximately 73 mph a warning light illuminated advising them to stop driving the vehicle. The contact pulled the vehicle over and placed in park then turned off the vehicle. The vehicle's engine suddenly rev up on its own. The contact turned on the vehicle and slowly drove to the nearest parking lot. The contact stated that they turned the vehicle off for a moment then once they turned the vehicle back on oncfe in the parking lot. The contact stated that without the contact pressing the gas or shifting the gears, the engine revved back up and the vehicle began to go in reverse. The contact pressed the brakes and went to move the gear in park position, however, when they looked down they noticed the gear had not moved from the park position despite going in reverse. The contact towed the vehicle to the dealership (valley Ford located at 910 s 1st street, yakima, wa 98901 phone number 509-453-3125) who had not diagnosed the vehicle as of yet. The dealership informed the contact that the failure occurred while at the shop. The contact was made aware of NHTSA campaign numbers 19v362000 (power train) and 18v471000 (power train) which both have failures that relate to what they were experiencing. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to NHTSA. The approximate failure mileage was 90,000. Gl.
My car will not say in gear it will continue to go in park no matter what gear it's in. I was on the city street when that happen. It took me about 30 minutes for it to do anything. Once I got it parked it did it again. On the screen it said shift system fault. At one point it was stuck in reverse. They are telling me it's not a recall on that when it should be. I could've been driving on major highway when it had changed gear. My kids and I could've got seriously hurt.
Vehicle does not shift to next gear picking up speed or some times going down hills will not shift to higher gear car only has 45000 miles on it still. And on high way it has down shifted hard at 70 mph then up shifted back to the right gear.
Tl the contact owns a 2016 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that the vehicle would not shift into gear. There were no warning indicators illuminated. Transmission just went out, it will rev up but not ho into gear. It was in motion and when it was slowing down it didnt down shift and just stopped moving.
Tl the contact owns a 2016 Ford Fusion. After starting the vehicle and switching the shifter into reverse, the transmission would not remain in gear. The vehicle was unable to be driven due to the failure. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer (parks Ford, 3333 n. Ford sent out a pre recall letter a month ago but they don't have a fix for it. Yesterday after I started my car I went to take my car out of park, the gear shift moves but the car doesn't actually go to another gear. The trans shifter cable bushing needs replacing. Ford doesn't have a fix for it and they are not trying to resolve the issue. I literally have to go without a car until the get s part which I heard was the middle of next year.

I initially called on 724/2018, incident# 1256726. I had an issue where my car was placed in park, but car thought it was still in drive. Found out there was an open recall for this issue (manufacturer recall#18s20). I also reached out to Ford motors, who advised to wait until car diagnosed and see what really caused the issue. Per the autonation Ford dealership that worked on my car, it wasn't the exact same cause as the recall, but the effect was the same that the car not know what gear it was actually placed in. . . Gear shift stopped working, brake lights stopped working, then engine wouldn't start, as car already thought it was in drive. Ford advised if issue not caused by whats in recall that I would have to pay. My response was "if something else caused the exact same issue, sounds like the recall should be adjusted to cover more than just one cable. Seems like Ford agreed, because they fixed the issue for free. Paperwork says issue was "cable assembly- selector lever. Shifter cable was replaced. I then called Ford mototrs the next day to follow-up on my previous call. . . I was advised that part for the recall wouldn't be available until late September, which is a very long time for an unsafe car. My issue is this is my 2nd recall, and I've only owned the car for 3 months. I advised Ford motors I felt the car was unsafe. Rep asked me "what do you want". . . I advised I would like to seek possible trade-in for a safer car, and this car, nor any car with 2 recalls should still be on road. Rep then gives me the phone number and phone option to reach the "buyback/trade-in request program" phone number was 800-392-3673, option 1, option 4, then option 5. She advised I needed my VIN, then it would ask for my mileage. Option 1 was english, 4 was for recalls, and 5 was to repeat those options again. I called back 6 more times, and tried different options unsuccessfully.
Lunging, not going into gear, shuttering, not able to control speed on any type of highway. Can't drive it safely to get it to the Ford service dept. Car is in charlotte, nc. Contacted capital Ford on n tryon st and huntersville Ford on statesville rd. Both dealers look at it for 4 or 5 days and we have to bring it to them. It's not safe to drive.
Tl-the contact owns a 2014 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that the shifter console display the vehicle was in park, but the display on the dashboard reflected that the vehicle was in reverse and did not move out of gear. The vehicle was towed to the dealer baldwin Ford/Lincoln inc 801 s westwood boulevard poplar bluff mo 63901, they determined that the shifter cable needed replacement . The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 108,000. Bp.
While returning from vacation in georgia, I was gassing up in south carolina when I placed my car in park and it started to roll away. I immediately used the parking brake to stop the vehicle. Tried to shift in another gear and the shifter would not move. Had car towed to local Ford dealer in hardeeville, SC on July 7th, 2018. They could not diagnose the problem until Monday July 9th, 2018. Car was diagnosed and found out that the shifting cable had broke. They located part and repaired the car on July 10th, 2018. Not only did I have to pay for the car repair out of my own pocket, because extended warranty did not cover, I acquired and additional 3 nights of lodging while waiting for my car to be repaired.
2015 Ford Fusion- after sitting for short periods of time the vehicle will not turn on until multiple attempts. The battery is good. No jump is required. Vehicle will go from no power on the first attempted start to managing to power on within a couple of minutes. While in drive, the vehicle will not switch gears appropriately. The engine will rev, pull, and then switch gears very roughly. This has been looked at by a local mechanic. The mechanic could not find any problems even though it has been a consistent occurrence. Mechanic stated that this is common in newer Fords.
My 2015 Ford Fusion has difficulty changing gears while driving, specifically shifting from first to second, then second to third. Also, rough shifting from park to reverse with my foot on the brake. The latest incident was when I moved the gear shift from park to reverse and the car did not shift into gear. I put it back into park, then into reverse again and it shifted. I drive it home, very slowly, and had it towed to the dealership the next morning. Ford corporate is involved, after four months of me asking for a new transmission, and they have not informed me of a conclusive decision on what they are going to do. I am afraid for my life to drive this vehicle, and have told the dealership and Ford corporate so multiple times. The car isn't generating any codes, and they have, so far, refused to put a new transmission and associated parts in the vehicle. I do not qualify for the lemon laws in my state because I am the second owner of the vehicle. However, I purchased it as a certified pre-owned vehicle from what I thought was a reputable dealer. In dealing with this dealership, I have come to realize that the dealer is worthless and shady. I'm working with another dealer now, and they seem to be a bit better. Ford corporate is refusing to take responsibility for the issues with this deathtrap they sold me, and I'm struggling to get out of the car even though it's been in the shop five times now for the same issue. My car is still under warranty. They have replaced several items, but the car drives more roughly after every "repair" attempt. I want out of this deathtrap, and I want Ford to give me all of my money back that I paid for it. Word to the wise, don't ever buy a Ford.
Stopped in drive thru at fast food restaurant. Car was fine. Got ready to put car in drive, would not move and could not change gears, could not remove key from ignition. When tow truck driver arrived, he noticed that the shift linkage was disconnected from gear changer. No part in stock to reconnect it, even after contacting dealership. A car this new should not have this problem. Only normal driving activity and regular maintenance.
This instance vehicle going steady 35mph and started revving rpm's up like it was going to shift into another gear, it then slammed and jerked the car and started the revving again. Stopped at a stop light and and turned left, while turning and hitting accelerator the car did not want to move and started revving again and then slammed and jerked almost making the person behind me rear end me. Previous instance was a steady 75 mph on the flat highway and the same revving and slam/jerking had happened. 5th time it's done it this year alone. 13 times since 2011. This instance the orange wrench light came on the dash. Car is at dealership to get looked at. This is very unsafe especially since it is erratic and does it at any time it feels like. This car is not safe to have my family in.

1st time, I was stopped at a red light after driving 50 miles when the light turned green, I stepped on the gas, the car rev'd like the car was in neutral and would not go into gear. After several tries, it went into gear and drove ok. The 2nd time, I was traveling about 60 mph, and the car started reving at 4,000 rpms and lost all power. I pulled over, put it in neutral and back in gear several times till it started again. I pulled out again on the 4 lane and the car continued reving at around 4,000 rpms and had no power so I got off the road again. The "wrench" trouble light lit up. I turned the car off, sat about 5 minutes, started it back up and it worked fine. I took it straight to a Ford dealer who could not find out what was wrong with it.
When leaving from work, reversed out of parking space. The car took a bit more pressing on the gas to accelerate than normal. When pulling out of driveway, the rpm shot up to 4000 and the car did not shift into gear to accelerate. When shifting into second gear it was harsh and jerky. When approaching a stop sign, down shifting was jerky. When traffic moved forward and I pressed on the accelerator, the car shifted into reverse and I quickly had to brake. I could feel that shifting for every gear took more rpm's and it was very violent, driving is dangerous and I am now scared to drive my car. I am having it towed to dealership tomorrow to try and find out exactly what is going on and how to fix it.

Today I was at a red light when my car decided to act up. The light had just turned green and I had started to drive when all of the sudden my car lost power. It struggled then just stalled right in the middle of traffic. I looked at the dash and I noticed the wrench light came on. While I was trying not to die in traffic I put my car into neutral where I turned the key to the off position then back to the on position. Luckily my car came back on but it was still struggling. I managed to get the car to a nearby parking lot where turned it off again. I gave it a few minutes to recover then turned it back on again. Everything now appeared to working normal. I opened the hood to make sure everything seamed okay (nothing burning, smoking, or anything else out of the ordinary), everything checked out okay. Also I would like to mention that my transmission sometimes fails to go into gear then all the sudden it goes into gear and jerks really hard. Additionally my lower gears will shift very hard. When it shifts it acts as if someone had pushed in the clutch for to long then it goes into gear.
I have a Ford Fusion with about 35,500 miles. I bought the car used with about 18,000 miles and noticed inconsistent shifting right away. Then progressed into not shifting back into gear right away after shifting out of reverse. I took it in and they reprogrammed the transmission and the service supervisor said that this transmission adapts to the owners driving habits. Took it in again about a month later and they said the fluid was low; they weren't sure why just filled it and sent me on my way. Third time I took it to a different dealership. They had to pull the transmission and replace parts, which took almost a week. It seemed okay at first but now is displaying the same issues as before of not shifting into gears when accelerating. The problem was not fixed and I am left with a vehicle that also had a heater motor replaced that were making a whistling noise, floor heat that barely comes out, car alarm that goes off even when all the doors are unlocked and bright lights that just randomly come on. I don't know if its a lemon, but I smell disaster in the next couple of years! wish Ford would do the right thing and stand by its product.
Car shifts extremely hard into reverse--feels like transmission is going to drop out of the car. Does not accelerate properly; feels like accelerating in a higher gear when starting off. Does not seem to shift gears when driving. Shifts hard when changing from reverse to drive. Also feels like transmission drops randomly when driving at high and low speeds. Car has been into the dealer on 4 separate occasions over 9 months and problem still isn't fixed.
There was a recall on the 2010 Ford Fusion transmissions. I took the car in on 12/31/10 to automax Ford, killeen, TX. They told me that nothing was wrong with it and it is fine. On 3 August 2011 my car felt like it did a downshift while going down the highway. At this point my accelerator fails to work. The car is not in any gear and even when I give the car gas the engine will not rev. I then have to come to a complete stop and put the car in park. While in park the car idles really heavy like and stuttters to keep going so I have to turn the car off. When I turn the car back on it will turn over about 6 or 7 times before it starts. I have to do this process every time the car does this which has been about 6 times in the past two days. The incident happens on the highway and in regular city driving. I believe automax Ford has failed to do the inspection right and now the recall letter is expired as of April 2011. I was also deployed overseas during that time period of expiration.
Transmission on 2010 Ford Fusion skips out of gear and clunks into gear at times. Failed to go into gear when I was pulling out onto a busy highway. I had to pull off the road to avoid being hit by the car from behind. Near accident. Ford earlier issued a recall on the transmission and re- calibrated the powertrain module. This obviously did not work because of the ensuing accident. I took it back to the dealer and they could find nothing wrong with it. This was in June of 2010. By July, it was worse and I took it back again. This time they kept the car. They said they would take the transmission apart and get instructions from Ford headquarters. When I checked the internet, I found page after page of complaints by Fusion 2010 owners with the similar transmission problems. Some, l occur after 7-10 months(12,000 miles) and some much sooner. I am concerned that it will be fixed properly because some owners received re-built transmissions and some received new transmissions, and these fixes did not always work according to owner testimony. My car has been in the shop for well over a week already. All I want is my car back without any transmission problems. Let's hope nobody gets in a serious accident because of this condition. My complaint is with Ford headquarters, not the dealer. The dealer is not in control.
I own a 2006 Ford Fusion, when driving on the highway while trying to pass another vehicle, the car will drop out of gear. The car will not reengage until the tachometer returns to an idle. Even then the car may not engage the gear again. With oncoming traffic or other cars behind this causes an unsafe condition.
