36 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 01/26/2007

I have a 2005 Mustang. It had fuel filling problems since I got it. The pump would click off continuously making it virtually impossible to fill. At times, it would even allow the gasoline to spew out of the vehicle. I took the vehicle to the service department and they already had a bulletin from Ford indicating the problem and that the tank should be replaced. Recently, I have been having the same problem again with the new fuel tank. I don't fill up that often, because I work from home and rarely drive the car. Again, difficult to fill and fuel spewing out of the car onto the side of the vehicle and the ground. I know from reading online that hundreds if not thousands of other Mustangs are having the same issues. I took it back to the service department and this time they decided that they were not going to fix it. According to the service ticket it is a normal characteristic of that vehicle to spew fuel out of the side of the car when you are attempting to fill it up. Yes, I have the ticket if you would like a copy of it. The date I provide on this form will be for the most recent incident. It spent a week in the shop following the incident, but, according to the shop foreman, was never looked at.

37 Tank Assembly problem of the 2007 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 12/31/2006

I am having difficulty filling the gas tank on the 2007 Mustang. I had it to the dealer 3 times in the past 12 weeks. I tried contacting Ford directly and they continually referred me back to the dealer, where there was no resolution. I am in oklahoma and not sure what the lemon laws were there. I also have a seat which was broken and has been fixed twice.

38 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 12/01/2006

2006 Ford Mustang with gas filling problems* the vehicle no longer allows the correct flow of gas into the tank. When the gas hose and nozzle are inserted into the tank for filling, the gas would stop at less than 10 gallons and the handle on the gas hose would no longer engage. The dealer was able to duplicate the problem, but they didn't offer a fix for it. The dealer suggested inserting the gas nozzle at a sideways or upside-down angle in order to fill the tank. The consumer stated he tried that in past, which resulted in gasoline spilling.

39 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 10/02/2006

: the contact stated while refueling at various gas stations, the pump shuts off or fuel spilled out onto the vehicle. The dealership determined there was a TSB that suggested a different gas station to be used to fill the tank.

40 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 06/26/2006

2006 Ford Mustang fuel tank spills gasoline out when tank is only quarter full. The consumer was told to try another brand of gasoline but that did not alleviate the problem. Neither the dealer/manufacturer offered any other solutions to the problem.

41 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 06/06/2006

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Mustang. Whenever the fuel tank was being filled, gasoline would spill out. The tank was not filled to capacity. The fuel nozzle stopped when the tank was half full, but gasoline still sprayed out of the tank. There were no prior warnings to this failure. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and they stated that this was a manufacturer design defect. The manufacturer is aware of the failure and engineers are conducting an evaluation. There is currently no remedy for the malfunction. The failure mileage was 1,000 and current mileage was 25,000. Updated 11/12/08 updated 11/13/08.

42 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 06/01/2006

I purchased a 2005 Ford Mustang v6. In 2006 I started having trouble with giving it gas and no going anywhere. When I took to mechanic he could not find anything wrong. The problem stopped on its own. In 6 months I started having same problem. Took to a different mechanic, he said it was a defected gas tank. I wish someone would check on this before it happens again and I get into a serious wreck due to malfunction.

43 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 05/26/2006

My 2006 Mustang was just taken in to the dealer for a problem with the gas tank. I have never been able to fill the tank without difficulty. The first few months I owned the vehicle I had to force gas into my tank because it would not fill completely. The nozzle would continually shut off and not fully fill the tank. At this point the problem has changed and now the nozzle will "not" shut off and it over flows *every* time I fill up. The dealer has recommends that I try different gas stations until I find one that I don't have a problem filling the tank at. This is not a fix and it is not convenient however I have tried all the Ford recommended gas stations bp, shell, amoco etc. This has not fixed the problem and the gas tank filling problem is an on going issue. Not only is this environmentally unsound but it is also dangerous and considering the cost of gas it is also expensive for me. I was told that there is no fix for my vehicle because my vehicle already has the revised design gas tank, however the problem I have still persists.

44 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 05/15/2006

My brand new 2006 Ford Mustang gas tank is difficult and impossible to fill full. I took car to dealer and they said they can not repair it.

45 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 04/11/2006

2006 Mustang gt built Jan 2006 has problems during fueling operations. Unable to get more than 1/2 to 3/4 full tank due to fuel pump cut-off. Most likely cause is defective design of "saddlebag" fuel tank and inadequate tank vent. This vehicle is equipped with the "revised" fuel system which has been subject to the same problems reported with the earlier design. This problem greatly diminishes enjoyment of vehicle and decreases the value as the car has a known problem.

46 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 01/30/2006

: the contact stated while attempting to fill the gas tank with gasoline, upon insertion of the gas nozzle in the filler neck, the fuel tank sensor provides a false reading as though the tank is full, but is low or empty. There is a clicking noise from the tank area. The vehicle was seen by a dealer. The service department suggested there was a pressure relief problem. The dealer replaced the entire fuel tank assembly, but the problem continued to exist. Updated 2/21/2006 -.

47 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 12/23/2005

Since the purchase of a 2006 Mustang gt I have experienced trouble in filling the gas tank. After so much gas has entered the tank the gas starts to spew back out all over the side of the vehicle. To me this creates a potential fire hazard if the gas were to spew back onto the person fueling the car. I have read other complaints to I know that I am not the only one experiencing this problem. I believe there should be some kind of recall and Ford should buy back all of these vehicles that aren't safe to fuel. No vehicle is safe to drive due to other humans on the road and sometimes factory error but there is no reason to not feel safe to fuel your vehicle.

48 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 10/07/2005

There have been no crashes or injuries, but I am concerned about something. When I fill my gas tank, it seems as if there is some kind of "vapor lock" or something that keeps causing the gas pump to kick off. . . . . I have to reposition the hose and try varying amounts of pressure on the nozzle to get the gasoline to flow into the tank. On occasion, gas has spewed back out of the tank from the nozzle. It seems to be worse when the tank is near empty or I've been driving for a long period of time.

49 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 08/30/2005

2005 Mustang brand new has faulty gas tank. I was unable to put gas in tank. Dealer is ordering a new tank from manufacturer to be replaced. Also replaced front upper strut bearings and lower sleeves brackets that where defective. Everytime I made turns in vehicle I heard clicking noises. Also trunk latch is getting replaced due to trunk wont unlock with remote key. Part is on order as well as gas tank. There is to many of these gas tank problems that other consumers are having for Ford not to recall them or investigate. Same goes for the struts.

50 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 06/22/2005

Purchased the car on June 1, 2005 and on three occasions have been unable to fill the gas tank more than half way. I have even left the gas station and gone back later in the day to finish filling the tank, but was unable to do so, as the pump continued to shut off as if the tank was already full.

51 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 06/08/2005

Dt: contact states. The pinion gear (which the consumer says is part of the rear end) is bad on his 2005 convertible Ford Mustang diagnosed by the dealer. The manufacturer says there is no fix for this. The dealer says they cannot get the parts because Ford will not relinquish the parts. The dealer and the manufacturer tells him there is an indefinite backorder on the parts. The vehicle has 4500 miles on it. He also cannot put the convertible top up or down on the vehicle. The motor on the top is blown up and the dealer and the manufacturer do not have a new one and refuse to give him the old pump back. They have told him there is no fix for the convertible top. He can only put one half gallon of gas in the car at a time because the gas pump clicks on/off telling him the gas tank is full. The dealer has diagnosed that the gas tank is bad and has ordered a new gas tank that will be there on 7-29-05 which is covered by the warranty. Other was selected as the component for the pinion gear because the consumer was not sure where the pinion gear was located .

52 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 06/01/2005

When attempting to put gas in the vehicle you have to run it in real slow or the pump will shut off. It acts as if the tank is full even though it is almost empty. Apparently the gas is pooling where the end of the pump releases the gas, there is a sharp slightly uphill right angle for the gas to travel and there is not enough room to for it to move through like other cars. The gas float stopped working as well, the gas needle is buried on the far right side of the guage inside the car, it is worthless, I believe these are related because they happened right around the same time.

53 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 02/01/2005

Fuel tank is hard to fill. I was told that my dealer replaced the tank with a "newer" version to prevent the air lock, but I bought this car new in Jan '05, and the problem persists with no help from Ford.

54 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 02/01/2005

I cannot fill the gas tank due to a "bubble" inside when the tank is 1/4 or less full. Dealer reported to replace the tank, but I have had issues for 3 + years. Dealer will not stop this issue.

55 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 01/30/2005

Many of the complaints already filed are mine. The gas tank on my 2005 Mustang gt will not take fuel, spits back (ruining a good wax job), and is extremely inconvenient to fill in cold weather due to having to spoon feed gasoline into the tank. I started complaining 6 years ago when I purchased the vehicle new, but the dealer and Ford both say it's not a problem - that this is just characteristic of this car. The newer fuel tank was installed, but did not help the situation. I will never purchase another new Ford because of the give-a cr#&*p attitude of both dealer and company! this is a safety and epa issue because I normally leave raw gasoline on the parking lot of the service station. I have accidentally stepped in the spilled gas and dragged it onto my carpets. This car still has under 24,000 miles on it, and I am sick of it.

56 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 01/28/2005

Many 2005 and newer Ford Mustangs are having difficulty when filling the fuel tank. It is very slow to fill, often taking more than 20 minutes to completely fill. You have to manually dispense the fuel into the tank, as even the first detent on the handle from the pump causes the pump to auto shut off. Many times the tank will overflow, spilling fuel onto the ground, because there is no auto shut off when trickling fuel into the tank. I have had my gas tank replaced under warranty, and the problem still exists. Ford says that this is a normal characteristic of the car, and they are not going to fix my problem. Other Mustang owners have been told the same thing. This has been a problem since I purchased the car. With thousands of 2005 and newer Ford Mustangs on the road, this can be a potential epa issue with all the spilled fuel. Not only is this a huge inconvenience for all Mustang owners, it is a safety issue. It is not normal for any car to not take fuel. Many owners have resorted to turning the nozzle upside down to try and trick the fuel tank, so it will accept the fuel. I have to deal with this problem every week when I refuel. With temperatures below zero and strong wind gusts, it is dangerous to stand outside and monitor the gas pump.

57 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 01/08/2005

The contact owns a 2005 Ford Mustang. The contact stated that the fuel tank would not receive fuel. It would eject from the fuel tank. The failure occurred intermittently. The dealer acknowledged the failure, but could not provide a remedy. Secondly, the dealer added that the split fuel tanks have smaller hoses, which may cause an inadequate intake of fuel in the fuel lines. The manufacturer did not assist. The failure mileage was 500 and current mileage was 70,988. Updated 10-29-08 updated 10/30/08.

58 Tank Assembly problem of the 2001 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 08/10/2003

I recently purchased a 2001 Ford Mustang. I recently noticed that the gas tank is located behind the rear axle and is actually attached to the rear bumper. After doing some research on the internet, I have found out that this is a very serious problem in the Ford Mustangs that can result in the vehicle catching on fire and exploding in the event of a rear-impact collision. I am very concerned now for my personal safety and the safety of my family. This is obviously a defective design in the Ford Mustangs that needs appropriate attention and a new design. I have almost stopped driving alltogether because of this very serious defect. I do not want to be killed in an accident when my Mustang catches on fire and explodes because of the location of the fuel tank. Please investigate this serious safety/design flaw in the Ford Mustangs and contact me with your information. I have never been so scared to drive a vehicle in my life.

59 Tank Assembly problem of the 2000 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 09/04/2001

On 8/27/2001 I took our car to our Ford dealer due to it feeling lit it was running out of gas even thought it had gas. They could not find anything wrong. On 09/02/2001 while driving to California we had the same problem. Due to it being a holiday weekend it could not be looked at until 09/04/2001. Future Ford of roseville calif. Had to replace the fuel tank sender, cluster asy. Sndr & pump asy. And filter asy. On our way home from a trip to CA. On 05/30/02 we had the same problem again, this time while on hwy 50 in utah. The car bucked and acted like it was out of gas. It stalled resulting in no power for steering or braking. While trying to steer the car to the side of the road on a curve, it went across the road in front of oncoming cars, almost resulting in a accident. ***dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis****762652.

60 Tank Assembly problem of the 1999 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 09/25/2000

We were traveling northbound on i95 near the vicinity of edgewater, FL to st augustine, FL, when an 18-wheeler trucks tire debris hit underneath my vehicle. After the impact, I immediately opened the driver and passenger side of our car and a heavy burning smell invaded the interior of my vehicle. I stopped the car and my daughter and I checked around our vehicle and my fully-filled gasoline tank was leaking. I called 911 and left the perimeter of the vehicle for safety until the police and the fire dept arrived. If I had not opened my windows this leak would have ignited with the hot exhaust pipe and my daughter and I could have burned and our car.

61 Tank Assembly problem of the 1996 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 09/22/2000

Fuel tank is defective. Area of wetness seeping from top of tank on drivers side adjacent to exhaust tail pipe confirmed by dealer . The point of defect on top of tank is obscured from road hazards by it's close location to the underside of the auto frame, leaving the conclusion that the tank has a manufacturing defect and needs to be replaced. I do not feel this should be at my expense as the seepage and it's proximity to the hot exhaust is a serious safety hazard.

62 Tank Assembly problem of the 2000 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 09/20/1999

Was at gas station & filled vehicle with fuel. Engine check light came on & stayed. Took vehicle to dealer & was informed by mechanic the cap not on tight & vehicle needed to be recomputerized. The problem with engine check light has reappeared. The vehicle also giving a code of loss of fuel.

63 Tank Assembly problem of the 1996 Ford Mustang

64 Tank Assembly problem of the 1997 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 06/01/1999

Suspension-sway bar - the bolt for the sway bar has sheared off. I have no idea when this occurred except that I was stopped, turned to make a u-turn and heard a loud bang. After that I began to hear this noise hitting my car I thought it was a tire or jack in the trunk. I have found it to be the sway bar. Gas leaking - when my car is ideling I start to get gas fumes filling my car, especially with the air conditioner on. I took it to Ford last summer, they charged me $300 to fix but that has not worked. My car fills up with gas fumes and now that I am using the air conditioner again, its back at my attention because the fumes are very strong and I get sick, headaches, dizzy and lightheaded.

65 Tank Assembly problem of the 1998 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 12/29/1998

Vehicle only had 4500 miles on on the odometer when I detected a fuel leak. The fuel was dripping out of the gas tank where the filler pipe connected to the tank. I was on vacation and had just driven the vehicle about 2000 miles from ohio to florida an explosion could have occured if the vehicle would have encountered any sparks or a cigarette was discarded. The vehicle was taken to a dealership in homestead, florida where it remained overnight. The dealership stated that this vehicle was the third vehicle they encountered leaking fuel that week. I contacted the manufacturer however no recall has been issued. This is a very dangerous situation that can cause fatalities or serious injury. I would like Ford to reimburse me for the rental car that I obtained and take this vehicle back because I do not feel that it is safe. I work at an auto manufacturer and I do not feel like Ford wants to stand behind the safety of their product.
