1999 Ford Ranger. Windshield wipers activated for no reason and made shorting sound when turn signal lever was used. 2 days later while traveling home from PA. Rear of truck caught fire and in a matter of 3-4 seconds was a total loss traveling into the cab area. Interior was so burnt even the metal for the steering wheel was destroyed. I believe the was a short circuit in the wiring.

The 1998 Ford Ranger was part of an August 2007 recall because of a cruise control wiring harness issue. We have been told since then, that no parts were available, don't park vehicle near a structure, bring the vehicle in to have cruise control disconnected, and parts should be available in January. Well, it's nearly ground hog's day, and guess what? nothing has been done to supply parts. Ford no doubt is still building new vehicles and putting wiring harnesses in them, but they don't take the recall seriously. No wonder they're not a viable automobile entity any more. Bring on the europeans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

I was in stop and go traffic in my 2006 Ford Ranger with approximately 3500 miles on it when engine sputtered and stopped as I tried to accelerate. The gas tank was near full and the truck would not restart after I coasted across a lane of moving traffic onto the median. Having experienced a similar problem in my 1986 Ranger, I called the dealer service center to ask where the fuel safety shut off switch was located. After being assured that the switch could not be the problem unless I had been in a collision or hit a very large pot-hole, I reset the switch and the truck started. The switches in these trucks apparently has a defect that has not been corrected for 20 years. The service people seem to be unaware of the issue and I suspect that many people have been sold fuel pumps and other related items that were not the problem. I am just glad it didn't happen at 65 mph.

A fire started under the dashboard.
Truck was stopped & left running, driver and passenger got out to see if road too muddy to drive on. When opened door less than 1 minute later, truck filled with smoke. Fire smelled electrical, battery unhooked, vehicle towed to Ford dealership. Apparently wire on power window on passenger side touched metal and started the fire. This vehicle has never been wrecked and door or windows worked on. What would make it short out and start fire if not factory defect. Dt.
Instrument panel will intermittently not work, which results in not letting consumer know if any of the doors are opened.

Consumer was driving at approximately 65 mph when rpms jumped from 2800 to 5000 for about 3 seconds, it occurred 3 times in 30 minutes. Has happened several times, and was not limited to any given speed. Dealership has looked at vehicle, and processer (d99) has failed. Dealer informed comsumer that this part was no longer being made, and newer part was not available yet.
Truck was taken for east Ford (dealer) for transmission maintenance. The od light and reverse lights failed from that point on. Truck taken back 4/16/2001 for same, dealer says wiring in steering/shifter is rubbed and requires shifter replacment.

This truck has numerous problems with it including the ones that I have listed. I have owned the truck since June 9th, and it has been in the shop for over 55 consecutive days. Transmission failed twice/ instrument cluster failed, and speed control failed. The dealer and manufactor is laying blame on me for these problems. I do not feel safe driving this truck, the first time the transmission went I was in the middle of a very busy intersection and was almost hit. The second time which was a month after they had it in the shop I was going to important training for the u. S. Coast guard, and it failed. The first time they had the truck for 20 days and the second time they have had it for over 35 days now and I still don't have it. There are numerous problems, that they aren't even telling me about. The dealer isn't helping me with this at all. I want to get out of this vehicle since I have only had it since June and they will not help there blaming me for all the problems.

I had a1999 Ranger that was great, this truck has been a piece of truck since day 1. No safety defect mentioned in summary.
Part replaced with used parts. Total cost $379. 18, took 10 days to get repaired at bay Ford, port orchard, wa, 98366. This failure caused a small fire within the steering column and filled the cab with smoke. This incident endangered the life of my 17 year old daughter. Neither bay Ford (repair facility ) nor Ford customer service would handle this under warranty.

Widshield wipers start unexpectedly ,cycle between 1 and 3 times can find no patteren at this time I do beleive some are caused by turning on directional lights. Some time just going down smooth stright road they will start. When they do cycle it is not at fast rate. Concerned it could be short some place in steering column.
