While driving down the highway, the harmonic balancer failed. The pulley separated from the rest of the balancer and slid back to destroy the crankshaft position sensor. Once the sensor failed, the engine stalled. I was able to pull over to the side of the highway, but this sudden failure is dangerous and if I was not able to get to the side of the highway could cause an accident. After a little research on the internet there are several occurrences of the same issues on the Ford 4. 0 engine on Ranger / explorer. Looking at the NHTSA complaints sites there are also several occurrences of the same issue (more then 1 year, more then 1 model): odi id number : 10356858, odi id number : 10356913. There may be more, but I was tired of looking.

Complaint related to 2004 Ford Ranger 4. 0l v6 sohc engine with 81,000 miles. On September 15th 2010, I started experiencing a squeak from the engine compartment on my 2004 Ford Ranger. I changed the pulleys that had bearings that could contribute to the noise but the noise persisted. I then changed the belt and the squeak went away for a while. After another 1500 miles the squeak was back and more pronounced. I investigated this incidence and found that the pulley separated from the harmonic balance and slid towards the timing chain case. The belt was now riding on the rubber hub of the crankshaft part of the harmonic balance. The squeak was coming from the belt rubbing on the side of the pulley
replaced harmonic balance with after market model. Old part available for inspection.

Recently I encountered a problem with my 2004 Ford Ranger. The harmonic balance pulley came apart. The website carcomplaints. Com has at least 14 incidence of harmonic balance failure on other Ford models. Can you investigate this issue and verify my findings? in my opinion, the problem has serious safety ramifications because of the systems involved. The harmonic balance pulley driving the serpentine belt that power the steering and brake pumps. The loss of both pumps has the potential of causing an accident. The loss of the serpentine belt will also cause over heating. I believe Ford should inspect and make repairs to this component on its vehicles without charge to the customer.
The contact owns a 2005 Ford Ranger. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for a routine oil change. The mechanic informed the contact that while attempting to perform the oil change, the engine blew. The mechanic stated that the cam-shaft pulley separated and cause the timing to jump and lock the engine. The failure was so severe that the engine was unable to be rebuilt. The dealer advised the contact that they were not liable for the failure. The manufacturer would not provide any assistance and the vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 112,000. Updated 9/13/10 updated 09/15/10.

In November 2003 (or thereabouts) my Ford 2000 Ranger started making squealing sounds. The Ford dealer from whom we purchased the truck (east bay Ford in oakland) indicated that the serpentine belt needed to be replaced and did so. The belt failed again in December and we had it replaced. Just two days after replacing it the second time it failed. At that time the truck had been driven to washington state. The belt still squeals. I am told by east bay Ford that there is nothing they can do. That the part is defective. They promised to send me information on the part, but have failed to do so. Do you have any information on this problem? east bay Ford tells me there are no risks to having a defective serpentine belt, but I am very nervous driving around with a defective part in my vehicle -- plus is sounds awful!!.
Dealer had replaced three times the pulley of the serpentine belt. But noise problem still occurring.

At 30000, the first serpentine belt was replaced. The dealer said there was nothing they could do because the belt was not covered under the warranty. The belt has been replaced twice more since then, and the vehicle only has 52000 miles. Around 40000 miles, the front suspension started clunking every time you hit a bump. The mechanic who inspected the front end stated that the front suspension bushings are what is causing the clunk.
Problems with vehicle's ball joints and belt tensioners. The consumer expressed a concern about the air bag needing a deactivation switch, the consumer was told by the maryland state police the air bag was dangerous on the passenger side for small children and short people. The consumer talked about two vehicles in the complaint a 1992 Ford Ranger and a 1999 Ford Ranger, the 1999 Ranger was in need of a air bag deactivation switch and the 1992 Ranger had belt tensioner and idler arm problems. The consumer no longer owned the 1992 Ford Ranger because it was lost in a flood.
