1 Gasoline Engine problem of the 2000 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 09/15/2004

Driving on a semi rough road, stopped at a signal to make a left turn, light turned and I went. I pushed on the gas it would not go above idle speed. There was a strong smell of gas coming from the truck. I stopped and got out there was gas pouring out of the bottom of the truck. I decided to check the fuel filter out and the hose on the tank side had popped off. I reconnected it and it been fine since then. Nothing was repaired or replaced.

6 Gasoline Engine problem of the 2002 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 09/14/2002

Purchased a new 2002 Ford Ranger 4x4 4dr xcab with the 4. 0 engine. Vehicle identification # 1ftzr45e62pb03667, on September 14, 2002. After coming to stop, engine has surged. First time rpm went to 1500 and could keep the truck in place with brake pressure. Took to dealer for 3000 service in December and reported problem. Dealer performed normal 3000 service and found no problems, however they asked to be informed if it happens again. This time engine surged to over 3000 rpm and could not keep truck stopped pushing into another truck in front of me. We hit bumpers and the only way to stop my truck was to slam the transmission into park. Are there any other reported problems of engine surge like this. Using regular gasoline in the tank. Taking truck back to dealer for inspection.

7 Gasoline Engine problem of the 2002 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 08/23/2002

2002 Rangers are apparently equipped with a speed control chip that limits top end speed and rpm's. I was not informed that my vehicle was going to be crippled by this device or I would not have purchased it. When driving in the western us, this limiter has almost caused me to be in an accident 4 times. Ford should be compelled to tell buyers that this vehicle has a speed limiter before the sale is closed.

10 Gasoline Engine problem of the 2000 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 05/08/2002

Received this vehicle on -1/16/2000 every thing ran good for 6 mo. The engine started a to exhibit a engine spark knock (ping noise). I have had this vehicle in numus numerous times. Each time that I had it in the dealership there was a failure to resolve the problem. I had several different service representatives telling different things about this problem. They concluded that I would have to run the vehicle with a more expensive fuel. Without any compensation. This is in contradiction in of service manual which states these vehicles can be operated on a normal octane. This is an ongoing problem with this vehicle since I purchased new. The ping is more apparent in warm and dry climates. The dealership maintains that everything is in specs. Ping from an engine is not a normal operating condition. I have wrote letters to the main customer service bureau for Ford motor company. Also to the lead service representative for the dealership. Still after 2 1/2 years this problem still exists. In fact even with the higher octane fuels the 2. 5 engine is still ping at highway speed. Now they are stating to me, that this problem is beyond the scope of the warranty?.

11 Gasoline Engine problem of the 2002 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 02/03/2002

I get 14 miles to the gal on the freeway the sticker said 19. The engine shakes at idle. It has a lean idle miss. The shaking is very bad at times. Transmission does not shift right, causing bad gas mileage. I have taken it to three different dealers they all say there is no problem. But 14 miles to the gal is not acceptable.

15 Gasoline Engine problem of the 2001 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 06/20/2001

Engine control allows rpm to stick above 2200 rpm when depressing clutch to shift. After shifting rpm wont come down until clutch drags it down. This caused wheels to break loose on snow resulting in a bad skid in the mountains. Dealer has had vehicle in 5 times to fix but can replicate problem. Problem is intermittent with about one occurence per day. Occassionally it will repeat 9 or 10 times in a row. Factory engineer promised to get a recording diagnostic device that can be connected and started when problem is present, but has not followed through. Winter is coming and this is a serious safety problem on the icy mountain roads I commute on.

22 Gasoline Engine problem of the 1999 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 08/15/2000

I feel that my Ford Ranger is an unsafe vehicle. I have had many problems with it since I bought it brand new. Everything stemming from holes in the floor to a faulty transmission and engine among faulty power windows and electrical on more than one occasion. . I just wonder what is next. I am worried about the future of this vehicle especially with its past track record. Please send me any information that may be of help to get Ford to buy my vehicle back. My email is jennetic@aol. Com or sacroxx1@aol. Com.

23 Gasoline Engine problem of the 1996 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 07/21/2000

Abnormally high cold idle made worse by attempting to 'kick it down' with accelerator pedal; pedal sticks to kicked position causing engine to race even higher. Must shut off engine to avoid damage. With engine off, must repeatedly stomp pedal to attempt release. Partial release still leaves very high engine speed, undriveable. Dealer can't duplicate problem; found corrosion at end of throttle cable, cleaned and lubricated. Not sure if problem is fixed, since on both occasions the vehicle had sat for one week of nonuse before problem occurred.

24 Gasoline Engine problem of the 1998 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 12/11/1999

Bought this truck with 16,000 miles on it from earnheart Dodge. Dec . 11,1999. On Jan 24,2000 took it to berge Ford service dept. For noise coming from engine (like marbles runnning around in it) truck stayed there to have engine looked at for 5 days. In the meantime I had to pay for rental. Got tired waitng for truck to be looked at and called earnheart Ford service to come pick up and take to theirs. Service rep said could be just carbon in it. So they decarboned it. The noise still was there. After 20,000miles on the truck total ,they put in Ford factory rebuilt engine in it. Okay for about 1,000 miles , noise came back. Took back to Ford said it was probably carbon again. How come same problem with new rebuilt engine ? they decarboned it. When truck picked up there was still noise. Service said decarbon stuff still had to work more. Noise got louder. Got in touch to see what now they were going to do. Service manager said would be in touch. No calls. Tried calling and leave messages number of times no answer. Finally able to get ahold of service manger and he said they could not do anything more for me even though still under warrenty. Said his mechanic called the Ford hotline and they told him that they were aware of some of the Rangers having these problems with the engine ,but it would not hurt the engine . It had to do with the alignment of the valves in some of the engines. I said wait a minute not only I feel my truck is unsafe to drive making this racket as I drive the freewayu to work 4-5 times a week 40 miles 1 way,but why should I be stuck with a noisy ,unsafe vehicle after paying all the money I have for it and to be unhappy with it? question. . If this only a noise problem why was the consumers not warned about it when they bought it. And why did they change the first engine?I think these engines should all be recalled to find out the true problem before it becomes another "firestone" disaster. Please respond.

First the braking system started to vibrate when brake applied, rotors were machined, then brakes continued to lock up and calipers were replaced and now vibration has returned. Second the engine has had a running problem since almost day one and now has loud knocking and rattling comming from engine. Third, two of the steel wheels became weak and began to warp and truck could no longer be driven. As of now, vehicle has been in the shop for 22 consecutive days and I have only owned it five & a half weeks. So far, no repairs have been made to make the vehicle drivable.

33 Gasoline Engine problem of the 1998 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 08/15/1998

At maintenance oil and filter change, attempted to remove filter by conventional method out through bottom of engine compartment. Filter contacted starter and chassis frame which created a electrical short circuit resulting in fire involving plastic wheel well and parking brake cable housing. Also destroyed two ground straps and main battery ground wire before battery could be disconnected and fire extinguished with dry chemical extinguisher. Ford of hyannis told us that no other similar incident had been reported. No caution or information was included in the owner's manual or in the dealer orientation which would have alerted the owner to the necessity of removing the filter through the top of the engine compartment. Had it not been for the immediate availability of large dry chemical extinguisher, the vehicle would have been destroyed and garage attached to home severely damaged.
