8 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2004 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 05/08/2011

2004 Ford Ranger - fuel cutoff inertia sensor engages sporadically and requires reset to restart the vehicle. This has occurred at highway speeds, and required the driver to pull to the shoulder. Power steering is lost when this occurs. Depending on conditions and surrounding traffic this could be very dangerous. This issue has occurred on numerous occasions, under a variety of conditions. Having a fuel system cutoff that can engage at-speed during normal driving is a terrible design flaw.

10 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2005 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 02/01/2011

Fuel inertia switch malfunction, switch shorted out and caught fire. The inertia switch would trigger and shut off the fuel supply to the truck, this happened about 25times since purchasing the vehicle new, the last time it happened I was sitting still in bumper to bumper traffic and it just shut off. I reached under the passenger side of the dash board to reset it and could feel the heat from the electrical fire. I quickly shut off the vehicle and the fire died out. The safety switch is totally fried.

13 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2003 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 08/27/2010

Difficulty in filling gasoline in 2003 Ford Ranger. It seems to be a systemic problem that many Ranger owners experience. Not only is it a safety hazard because of the constant splash-back of gasoline when filling, but it's also an environmental hazard with all the spilled gasoline on the ground.

14 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 07/31/2010

Approximately eight months ago my vehicle stalled and would not restart. It was towed to a dealer and approximately $300 later I was told that the inertia switch had failed and had been replaced. Two days ago the same symptoms appeared and the vehicle was towed to the dealer again. I did some internet searching and found info and a youtube video that explained where to find the switch and how to reset it. Went to the dealer and attempted the reset in their parking lot before they completed any costly repairs. Vehicle started and has worked fine since. Possibility of stalling in traffic is a concern but I'll take my chances!! noteworthy that a close friend who owns an older model Mazda pickup recently had the exact same problem with the inertia switch replaced.

15 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2003 Ford Ranger

18 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2005 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 04/05/2010

The inertia switch on my 2005 Ford Ranger cut the fuel supply at 55 mph on a busy highway. After pulling the switch out and pulling out the connector, I found evidence of temperatures high enough to melt the plastic. This problem first started in November of 2008 and has gotten steadily worse since then. This evidently a design flaw that needs to be fixed by Ford.

19 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2003 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 03/10/2010

The first time the car engine started racing uncontrollably I was at a stop sign. The second time, the same day 3/10/2010 I turned a corner and we took off at a very high speed. Both times I put the vehicle in neutral and "goosed" the gas pedal and the engine settled down to a normal speed. 2003 Ford Ranger.

21 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2001 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 03/02/2010

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6) I was driving my Ford Ranger, (2001 XLT automatic transmission) in an attempt to warm up the truck as the transmission had been acting up as it was not shifting as well as it should into higher gears. The truck was having trouble going past 10-15 mph before shifting gears and was going much slower than normal. As I drove around the parking lot where I work to warm up the truck, it was not going as fast as normal and it warmed up in about 20 minutes. I checked the transmission fluid and it was at a normal level. I turned off the truck and checked the oil which was in the normal range. I proceeded to go to qt and get some gas and on my way back to work, I went to stop at a red light and was almost stopped when the engine started revving up and took off at a very high rate of speed while my foot was pushing the brake pedal down as hard as I could. I then could not slow it down at the next light enough to make the right turn safely. I had to make a u turn with both feet on the brakes and after putting the truck in neutral and pushing the emergency brake, I had to put the truck into neutral and cut off the engine to turn into the parking lot where I work. I thought maybe I had hit the accelerator by accident and had a CO-worker watch as I cranked up the truck in neutral. The tires were spinning like crazy and the rpms were way up. I had to turn the car off quickly as with the parking brake on and both feet on the brakes, it felt like the truck was going to take off at any time. My truck is parked with the check engine light on and I am scared to get near the [xxx] thing. I have a call into my mechanic now.

22 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 02/14/2010

I was pulling into sherry's Mini mart in doe run, mo when I realized that my truck was not slowing down as expected, even though I had my foot on the brake. I had little time to react as I was bearing down on the building. I put my other foot on the brake but the truck continued to move forward, even spinning the tires trying to overcome the brakes. I jumped the curb and hit the building at a very low speed. At this time I managed to pop it out of gear. I did not go through the wall, but pushed it in about a foot. My airbags did not deploy. Most of the damage was to the wall and the interior of the building. There was little damage to my truck other than a few scratches on the bumper. Luckily no one was walking in front of me or near the inside of the building. This was the only time this has occurred in the 50,000 miles that I have owned this truck and it has not happened in the days following. I took my truck to my Ford dealer the next morning and they claim they could find nothing wrong. They could find no fault codes in the computer and confirmed that there was no damage other than the scratches on the bumper. They did imply that I was hitting the accelerator pedal with the side of my foot while braking. I strongly disagree with their implication and have witnesses who saw my efforts to stop the truck.

23 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2001 Ford Ranger

24 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2001 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 09/01/2008

My 2001 Ford Ranger's rpm's drop suddenly when slowing down. Once I come to a complete stop the rpm will surge or the vehicle will quit. I have to put one foot on the brake and the other on the gas to keep the car running and stop the surging.

25 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 07/15/2008

I own a 2006 Ranger 3. 0 auto. That has 35,300 mi. The fuel delivery inertia switch has kicked out under normal driving conditions twice. First time at 32,172 mi. And had to be towed to a dealer. The technician reset the switch and I had no problems until 35,100 mi. This time I was lucky enough to be in a parking lot, instead of out in moving traffic. When tis happens, the engine, of course, dies immediately. The switch cannot be reset while sitting in the driver's seat. The dealer will not replace as they cannot fail the switch during " their" road test.

26 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 1997 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 08/18/2007

The contact's sister owns a 1997 Ford Ranger. The contact stated that whenever fuel is placed into the vehicle, the fuel leaks out on two sides. 27 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 1997 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 12/17/2006

- the fuel leaks when the vehicle is completely refueled. The problem stems from the fuel filler assembly. The dealer said that the parts for the vehicle were not available. The contact was told he needed to bring the vehicle in to be looked at, and would be charged an $80 fee. The contact feels that this a safety issue and that the $80 fee is appropriate.

28 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2005 Ford Ranger

32 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2003 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 07/15/2004

The inertia switch located at the top of the passenger floor board engages at the slighted bump. I've had this car for 5 years and continue to get false information from the Ford dealership about avenues of recourse or rectification. Its a faulty design for the inertia switch to be located near possible contact with a passenger. Legal recourse will be pursued.

33 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2000 Ford Ranger
