While driving I heard a clunking noise in the rear of the vehicle I looked to see the frame had rusted through in at least two places, the shock absorber upper mount had rusted off. The gas tank straps mounts were about to fail. I had replaced the gas tank feeder tube that had corroded off the year before. The truck body is still in very good condition but the frame appears to be gone. The truck has seen very light duty and has never been used off road. Since that time I have found many of the same occurrences on the internet.

1999 Ford Ranger with 130,000 miles. Leaf springs rusted out (both sides) and mounting brackets also rusted. Went to 3 autobody shops and nobody would touch it. Bumper just rusted out on both sides and spare tire well is completely rusted. Bumper and spare currently being held together with 2, 1900 lb chains. Ranger runs fine just body falling apart. Very concerned tire, bumper may become dislodged and cause further damage to myself or others. Gas tank also rusted but not leaking so far.

First failure was where leaf springs attach to frame (rear shackles) failed due to rust and put hole in truck bed. Replaced parts. Second failure is when filling tank with fuel; gas has started to run out on the ground at the gas station. Just received filler neck today to replace current rusted one. While under vehicle noticed tank strap is hanging loose not attached due to connection point rusted off (similar failure to NHTSA recall campaign #11v385000 fuel tank strap failure). Also noticed severe rust like little or no rust inhibitor was applied to frame and components. Shield above muffler is almost non-existent, frame cross member is flaking away due to rust. I am not qualified to provide full details of problems or cause but rust is becoming a safety issue with this vehicle. Contacted Ford and they say vehicle is not part of recall.
The contact owns a 1999 Ford Ranger. While parked, the contact noticed that the fuel tank had partially detached from the vehicle and was hanging down below the frame. The vehicle was taken an independent mechanic, who stated that the cross member, which held the mounting system for the fuel tank, was rusted. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and suggested the vehicle be taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostics. In addition, the cross member was not available for purchase and the rear frame would have had to have been replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000.
The contact owns a 2002 Ford Ranger. The contact stated that the sub frame was corroded and caused the fuel tank strap to fracture. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 72,000 and the current mileage was 92,000, updated 02/11/lj the consumer stated the frame rotted where the fuel tank strap failed, causing the tank to hang lower than it should. It was holding by one strap. There was a crack in the frame. Updated 02/12/14.

Fuel filler hose cracks prematurely at the connection to the top of the fuel tank resulting in significant fuel spillage during refueling as well as probably splashing out during driving. Fuel vapors surely escape all the time as well. Both situations lead to a serious fire hazard. Seems to be a widespread safety issue based on the amount of Ford Rangers with safety complaints listed on this site as well as discussions on various Ford Ranger forums. The oem Ford part lists for ~$400.

Fuel filler hose. The hoses (both inner & outer crack and cause a significant amount of fuel to spill out from the top of the fuel tank if fuel tank is filled. The hose is an expensive part to replace. I was told by the local Ford dealership that this part is one of the most popular parts they sell. " (the part costs between $225. 00 and $500. 00) plus labor.
Plastic locking straps for fuel tank kept breaking. This occurred on two occasions, on 04-07-00 & 05-17-00, and caused fuel spillages. Dealer was notified and informed consumer that vehicle not covered under manfacturer's. Recalls, and it was out of warranty.
