While pulling into my driveway the rear bumper fell off. After getting under the vehicle I found the frame to be rusted from the furthest point back to the axle area. Looking into it more I found the cross member to be rusted to the point that it is ready to fall off. The gas tank holding straps are rusted from the frame, not sure what's holding the gas tank in place. The spare tire holder is rusted and ready to come off. I removed the spare a placed it in the bed for now. The bed and its mounts are shot, the bed can be picked up a good two inches off the frame. Basically the truck is nothing but rust from the cab back. I was lucky when the bumper fell off 1/2 hour earlier I was traveling on a state highway at speeds of 60-65 mph. I have looked at other Rangers the same year and found some worse and some with no rust what so ever. Whats up? and is Ford aware of the problem and are they going to do anything about it. Who would have gotten sued if my bumper had fallen and killed someone?.

My wife was driving into fairbanks when the fuel tank exploded. The damage was extensive enough to cause the frame to be replaced. Ford will not tell us what happened or if it will happen again. We are afraid to drive the vehicle.

Hanger for fuel tank rusted away same as the full size Ford truck just announced in the recall. Currently held up by a nylon strap while searching for parts.
Gas tank dropped but didn't come apart from vehicle due to gas tank strap rusting through. When investigated I found that the other strap was rusted through approximatly 75% of the way.

The contact owns a 2004 Ford Ranger edge. The contact stated that he began to smell fuel. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership where the contact was informed that one of the fuel lines near the fuel tank burst. The contact stated that he did not drive the vehicle off road. The vehicle lost half a tank of fuel so the vehicle was towed to the dealership because the contact was afraid it might catch fire. The VIN was unavailable at the time of the complaint. The current and failure mileages were approximately 115,000.

When trying to fill the gas tank, the overflow system(?) doesn't work properly. You cannot have hardly any pressure or, as you fill, the gas spews out of the tank before the safety feature on gas pumps can turn off. Gas spews down the side of the vehicle, out onto the ground, onto my hand, onto my feet. This creates a combustion possibility at the gas tank as well as the gas pump. This occurs about 99% of the time when I try to put gas into the tank. It doesn't matter how full the tank is. This is an ongoing problem. I've been told that the only way that it can be fixed is by dropping the gas tank. I've also been told it is occurring in other, newer Ford pickups. Due to the possibility of fire, this should be investigated. Thank you.
Crack in gasoline filler top causing fumes and gasoline odor in car, especially when turning right. * when filling tank with gasoline, the fuel would leak out of the filler neck onto the ground while filling at the gas station, as if you were slowly pouring a glass of water, much more than a drip. Could not fill tank full until repair was done. Mechanic replaced filler and filler neck. Had to remove gas tank and truck bed to investigate and repair. Big job, big hazard!!.

-the contact owns a 1996 Ford Ranger. The contact was dispensing fuel into the fuel tank, and there was a leakage of fuel due to a crack in the fuel tank hose. The dealer was notified and they stated that the cost of repair part was $400. 00. The part was ordered for future repair. The contact disagreed with the cost of the part and stated there should be a reduction in the cost. The failure and current mileages were 117,000.
When filling fuel tank on 1997 Ford Ranger 4x4 long bed, fuel leaks back out and puddles on pavement below vehicle due to a split that has recently developed in the fuel tank filler neck (hose). Even when I do not fill tank all the way (to prevent above leaking) gas fumes are still strong and have accumulated inside the canopy (topper) on pickup bed. Fuel appears to leak (based on odor) after executing a sharp turn, a quick stop, and when traveling over bumpy roads. Ford's price for a replacement filler neck is prohibitive (around $450) plus labor and thus, I have been unable to have the problem repaired.

Was driving on state hwy. 20 @ 615pm, when I noticed no power when I pressed on the accelerator, rpm shot to 4000, then dropped down with no power, cars behind me were flashing there lights, arms waving out there windows when the car came to my side they were frantically yelling that I was on fire. I immediately pulled to the side of hwy. And flames were rolling into the cab of the truck, it was in 2 waves then I was able to open my door and exit the truck. Now flames were rolling out of the rear driver side wheel well, luckily I had a fire extingwisher in the bed of the truck which I extingwished in the wheel whell and as far back as I could reach, this put out the fire, but not without extensive damage to the underneath of truck including the gas tank where grass valley Ford determined the fire oringinated. As the hot spot is very distinguishing. Ford motor CO in dearborn mi. Sent me a letter saying they will not address this failer, and will not give me any information to contact anyone that can help resolve this matter. A 4 year old truck that has no modifications, and has been wwell taken care of should not burst into flames, endangering lives. They are at this point offering no assistance to correct this problem. I can provide estimates from the dealership with parts list included as well as them determing that it was a fire originating at the gas tank. . There were no events leading to this failer, never a gas smell just instantly into flames. . Thanks for your time in this matter. .

: the contact stated while stopped at an intersection, the vehicle stalled and an odor of smoke was detected. The contact looked in the rear view mirror and noticed flames. A passerby extinguished the fire. The vehicle was towed to the dealership who determined the chemicals being hauled caused corrosion to the fuel tank, causing the fire. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop who determined the fire was a result of the design of the fuel tank.

Stopped at a traffic signal when the engine shut off. Tried to restart engine when we smelled smoke and saw flames of fire behind us between the cab and bed of the truck. The gas tank caught on fire.
On Jan 5, 2006 while re-fueling my 1997 Ford range at macdill air force base a lady on the next fuel pump told me that I was leaking something from under my vehicle. I stopped pumping fuel to see what is was but the leek stop. I then continue to refuel my vehicle and the leek started once again in large quanities. After refueling I went to the service center at macdill air force and got the vehicle inspected. The service person told me that fuel filler line to the gas tank had multiple cracks and needed to be replaced.

When filling the gas tank, fuel spilled out onto ground. At the time, I was not aware of this site to post complaint.
Gas tank leaking.
Fuel leak from top of fuel tank. (high pressure fuel outlet nipple leaking on fuel tank module).
Faulty fuel tank vent hose. When filling up the gas tank and the pump kicks off when full, gas pours onto pavement below. I pulled the part off the vehicle and found the hose was cracked all the way around. This part is all one unit with the fill line and it costs a whopping $247 to buy the part. I asked autoway Ford in st, petersburg florida if they would pay for it but since it's not under recall they said they could not. We purchased one from gator Ford that same day. I noticed your site shows eight other complaints concerning this faulty hose. I would venture to guess there are plenty more potential fires lurking under other Ford Rangers. We have the old part on hand if any body wants to inspect it.
When the vehicle was refueled, fuel spilled out onto the ground. Rusted fuel neck assembly and fuel pump replaced.
When filling up gas tank consumer noticed gas leaking onto the ground. Cause unknown. Dealer has been contacted. Please provide any further information.
When filling gas tank gas will spill out.
No summary listed for above vehicle.
Fuel guage not reading properly, reading empty, it take 12 gals. To fill the 19. 5 gal tank, also moving off full after 20 - 30 miles after fill up, dealer says this is normal, please advise.
Fuel tank over flows when filled, causing gas to run onto the ground. This. In turn, creates a serious fire hazard.
Fuel tank level sensor does not accurately indicate level. Ford claims they know about this problem but cannot tell me when they will provide a replacement part and fix the vehicle.
Filler pipe has a crack and leaks gas onto ground when tank is filled. This problem has also occurred with other 1996/1997 Ford Rangers in this area as a personal friend had same problem last week with his 1997 Ranger.
Fuel tank filler assembly failed, large quantities of gas leaked when tank filled, $227 for repair, $194 for car rental waiting for parts.
Vehicle in garage. Fire dept had arrived to put out flames after smoke was noticed from garage. Fire department & insurance company inspector could not determine cause of fire. A neighbor heard an explosion. The fuel tank was suspected as cause of fire. Vehicle was totaled by insurance company. Pictures available.
3 times in shop [33+ days in shop, still in shop] gas tank assembly replaced once.
The truck could have caught fire and cost a life, this needs to be looked into and a recall done if it is a common problem with this make and yr of truck.
