6 Headlights problem of the 1998 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 11/06/2008

The plastic headlight lens are severely cloudy, a lot worse as time time goes on. . . . Years ago, when I bought the truck they were clear, now they are very - very opac, cloudy, so bad that you can't even see the headlight bulb ! there are many vehicles that have the same problem! so many, in fact that the part store aftermarket industries have come out with a restoration kit . I am sure that the cloudy, opac lens do severely lessen the amount of light emitted through the lens. My opinion on this is that the type of plastic selected by Ford seemed fine back in 1998 but over a period of years the plastic deteriorates. My recommendations is to have the manufactures replace them. By, I did buy the kit from a parts store and it is called headlight restorer / defogger kit. Myheadlight. Com . My brother and I hand buffed his 2001 Jeep headlights and it took us almost 2 hours ! it did help the amount of lighting! p. S. Sorry, haven't got spell-check. . . .

Dome light stays on after started and door closed and does not go off. Problem seeing at night. . . No way to turn off without removing the bulbs. Windshield wipers do not start when turned on the do not go off when switched off. Have to turn the wipers on then off again. Shift knob comes off when pulling shift lever from 1st to 2nd and 3rd to 4th. Makes shifting difficult while starting up a hill and merging on the freeway because the knob slips off completely and the shifter ends up in the neutral position.

Defective right front headlight assembly. Causes beam to flucuate erratically when driving , specifically over rough areas of road. Have returned the vehicle to the dealer twice with no satisfaction. Dealer proposed repair that I will not agree to because a) it is has not been approved by Ford motor CO b) it will negate the ability to adjust the headlight assembly should the need arise.

Oiginally taken to dealer for repair on 5/16/97. Could not find problem. Ford customer service has no info related in their data base. Very serious problem. I haved tried to identify problem on my own (electrical engineer) but wiring diagrams do not explain the problem. I beleive there is a circuit breaker inline that does not show in the Ford wiring details for this truck. I cannot verify this thru Ford. Would have to tear truck appart to find.
